What band should I do next ? Tell me in the comments section below. This is a compilation of several guitar harmonies by Metallica arranged in chronological order. It shows the evolution of the guitar harmonies themselves and how Metallica gradually drifted away from them in the 90s.
Enjoy !
this video does not include every single harmony that metallica ever wrote. the purpose of the video is to show the evolution of metallica's harmonies from album to album. everyone commenting about the exclusion of death magnetic, i hear you. i had completely forgotten that the album had awesome harmonies! i take complete responsibility for it!
Day that never comes too
Drop a 1.2 version on Nov 27, 2021
@Wojciech Szeler a part 2 for suicide and redemption?
HOW COULD YOU FORGET ABOUT DEATH MAGNETIC WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol and that fixxxer was played live now
next time my music teacher asks me to give an example of a harmony imma say 'a lars'
I was the 117th like 👍
@@angelogrotti good for you :)
@@chomp178 lol it’s cause of Halo 😂
@@angelogrotti ooh ye halo 4 reference, definitely didnt googe it
@@chomp178 it’s all the halos
They have been using minor 3rds forever. Minor 3rd up and minor 3rd down from the base voicing is so iconic Metallica.
I think you mean just 3rds, Metallica use both minor and major 3rds as long as it fits the scale they're using. But I agree, super iconic.
They don't use only minor thirds, they use thirds in a minor scale. That's a death metal trope and I can't think of any examples of Metallica doing that.
it's iconic Iron Maiden, not Metallica
@@benparsons4979 Correct
I don't think he just meant 3rds, he was probably talking about higher 3rds and lower 3rds (based on the main melody)
0:51 one of favourite harmonies of all time honestly. Super underrated.
underrated?
probably everyones favourite metallica harmony
@@berhanzeydan5747 seriously? I’ve never heard anyone talk about it
it is not underrated, fight fire with fire is.
Fade to black underrated? Don't make me laugh
One side of my earphones is broken, so I'm hearing just normal solos ;-;
using mono audio will help you
lmao same
That’s stereo, not harmony.
@@ChopRockMusic 🤦♂No shit, Sherlock.
Songs that were missed:
Phantom lord
Orion (bass intro and solo)
Damage Inc. (Intro)
...And Justice for all (middle harmony)
One
Harvester of Sorrow
Nothing else matters
The Struggle within
My friend of Misery
That was just your life
The day that never comes
Suicide and redemption
Atlas Rise!
Dream no more
Moth into flame
Spit out the bone
Let me know if I missed any?
the purpose of the video was to show the evolution of metallica guitar harmonies through the years without including every single harmony. i forgot to include a harmony from death magnetic which i take full responsibility for, but the exclusion of many of the harmonies on your list was intentional. sorry i didn't make that clear. i appreciate you commenting !
@@metalhummus it’s ok, I figured this was an intentional thing you did. I just thought I might list some of the other songs with harmonies that are worth listening to. No worries dude, no worries! 🤘🏻
Atlas rise not being there is the biggest omission.....I was SO STOKED the first time I heard that
NOOOOOO THE SPIT OUT THE BONE HARMONIES ARE AWESOME
shotest straw ajfa
i hate the fact that people just ignore that song all the time
8:15 - *just let me listen to that sick riff, why would you torture me like this*
it's like cuting down the pokemon theme just before the lyrics starts, but worse
Because you have a big chungus pfp
9:22 they played it live this month!!
0:38 actually, cliff did the harmony, lars just did the highest one
Where is THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES & SUICIDE AND REDEMPTION from Death Magnetic???
i had forgotten the day that never comes but i'm pretty sure suicide & redemption does not have a harmony
edit: it definitely does, thanks for pointing that out !
And dream no more
That Was Just Your Life also has two or three harmonized sections
Make part2
8ths or unison, calling that a harmony is for plebs
Personal opinion: early Metallica with cliff burton had some of the greatest harmonies known to man.
I remember Kirk telling a story about Cliff showing him a harmony he’d written, Kirk commented that it sounded like Thin Lizzy, and Cliff said “That’s where I get all my shit, man.”
Imagine if they’d covered “Whiskey in the Jar” back then. Cliff might have played the intro from Lizzy’s version on bass.
@@clinteldorado James said that he taught him
Facts
Brah that transition at 7:10 is the most insanely badass thing I’ve probably ever heard in my life
Nothing beats that harmony from Orion
1:18 I love Creeping Death's harmony so much. ❤
1:39 Call of Ktulu‘s as well.
Great work. The Battery section was superb. Glad you included the wonderful To Live Is To Die section. Thanks for the hard work.
Fun fact Kirk had three weeks to do the AJFA album solos and he wasn't happy with half of them. Said he wanted to do better.
6:39 best Metallica harmony
0:51 best metallica harmony*
Best harmony ever not just metallica
This is an amazing idea, cool to check out especially for me because I've always wondered how harmonies in Metallica worked. Or even how they do in general.
You played them in kinda of the same area of the neck, but you can play them wherever you like as long as you keep the interval range and the octave unaltered. There's so much room for imagination with them, maybe that's why a video about how to do harmonies is a rare sight.
*The day that never comes?*
i was hoping no one would notice 🤫😂
It’s funny how DM just doesn’t exist I guess
Blackened is just so beautiful and amazing to me
This needs to be updated, with 72 seasons included
The amount of effort put in this video!! Awesome job!
Crazy good!
2:14 the greatest intro in heavy metal history
7:11 is a sick transition
Great video as usual!💪🏿
You deserve a lot of subscribers my friend!
Keep going🤘
I've read the pinned comment, nonetheless...
DM: That Was Just Your Life, The End Of The Line, The Day That Never Comes, Judas Kiss, Suicide & Redemption.
HWTSD: Moth Into Flame, Atlas Rise!, Dream No More, Halo On Fire, Spit Out The Bone.
Awesome job man .....thankx for posting :)))))
These are how I learned to play and write guitar harmonies as a kid. I'd record myself playing one line on a shitty old boombox, play back the tape and play the other line on guitar over it. And it was all Metallica, they did so much more for me to understand how harmony works than bands like Maiden or Priest (not that they're not good or anything, but I was more into Metallica then). Cool to see this video! And the part 2 for all the ones you missed here
Anybody else have a quick imagination of going to your favorite bands concert today and holding a huge sign that just reads one of their older deeper “unpopular” tracks to see if they’ll be like “oh snap it’s been a minute hell yea let’s play that shit” ? 🤷♂️😂
Be pretty cool if a band did that
Probably wont work on metallica because uhh their older works are their more popular
Great job man.
Justice harmonies are the best imo
yess
Really nice vid. Metallica have always done the dual guitar thing so well. Songs like Orion and to Live is to Die really prove that.
Great job. I’ll subscribe.
AJFA has just about as many harmonies as time signature changes. They knew what they were doing on that album. AJFA will always be Lars’ best composition. He structured every song perfectly
This is amazing content!
great video
Nice compilation. Metallica is great and you played them great as well.
This video is awesome
Que grande trabalho! Parabéns!!!
Wow am I glad I stumbled upon this video 💃
That transition from battery to MOP was smooth as fuck
For "Ride The Lightning", CLIFF wrote the harmony
Now we gotta add Room of Mirrors!
Too far gone shadows follow and inamorata as well!
...and Justice for all with bass?? hahaha this video is amazing, I love it
Nice video! And they finally played Fixxxer at the 40th anniversary concert! 😀
Side note, you play guitar so well!
why is youtube recommending this all of a sudden?
ohh hey it's you
@@JeyNoct hi
i didnt expect to see you here
Eyyyy I like your vids
It's Umbreon doing Metallica a capella folksssss.....
really really love the loud bass
AJFA:One has Harmony
In Black Album: The Struggle Within, My friend of Misery have harmonies.
Death Magnetic: That was just your life, The Day That Never Comes, Suicide and Redemption have harmonies.
Hardwired to Self Destruct: Atlas Rise, Spit Out The Bone have small harmony section.
Please make a part 2 video and include all these.
all songs from 1984-1997/2008-2016 has harmonies. also Four Horsemen and Phantom Lord
Unforgiven to
Cliff's harmonies were soo good.
I guess they just says "this sounds great, put in the song"
Honestly, sometimes that’s the best thing to do. Lmao
that's how songwriting works...
The day that never comes first solo is a harmony
* from the middle section, the opening solo is James' (according to Wikipedia)
There are a few harmonies on MoP you missed. There's a harmony after the solo in the title track, during the chorus of sanitarium, and there's a harmony during Cliff's bass solo on Orion. I'm certain there's a few I'm forgetting.
the riff after "think why i should even try" in fade to black is also harmonized.
I wish this was just in trending
The length of this song is basically a length of Metallica's Long songs
my friend of misery esta lleno de armonizacion
7:47 sound like iron maiden
Disposable hero’s has one at the end or live they add it and also in the solo there is a harmony
oh yeahh the last chorus with "back to the front!" has the harmony. thanks for the comment!
metal hummus that’s ok awesome video bro
🖤
09:23 yeah!! We need Fixxer live!
It's killing me that you didn't get the 3 harmonies for the tails on Orion's guitar riffs correct. Still sounds great. 🤘
which app did u used?
Awesome video. How does the harmony work exactly tho? Like you play the same guitar line a minor 3rd up or something? Newbie here thanks
For the most part, yes. But it doesn't have to be a minor 3rd
Blackened hits different
lars harmony is my fav
That ride the Lightning intro harmony is actually from Thin Lizzy
is there an accurate lesson for the fight fire with fire harmony anywhere on youtube?
i learnt it from tabs online, try songsterr if u haven't already
7:09 with that transition, it could be alternative version of the song
oh yeah first album for ever about songs
but the master of puppet is amazing
3:02 out of tune
igual, muy buen video
name of this song plisss
What type of harmonies was used for Battery intro?
The only time you're allowed to use the word Epic is when describing the intro to fade to black.
Harmonies always sound better when guitars are in tune....
Man blackened hits different
I was like this video is almost over and we’re still on AJFA? and then the Load crickets came on LOL
Outro of The God that failed Is missing
That part from fade to black sounds like a rush song.
The Roam - zabest
There is harmony sections in st ange
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
For load you couldve included the little thing at the end of Until it sleeps
For real now, what type of harmonies fade to black has?
Holier then thou
Didn't For Whom the Bell Tolls have a harmony as well?
There's bass on Justice? Who knew?!?
Ahhh just a reminder why albums 2-4 kick so much butt. Lords of Summer sounds so Maiden'esque here
All this Harmaony parts are created by Cliff. Mayby not the melody itself, but Cliff had to write them down for Kirk and James.
Cliff😭
Justice has some of the best harmonies in metal.
Damage inc. intro is missing!
**skips 'One'** Me: ERAGED
I think you should've also added whether that's diatonic harmonisation or not. Nevertheless, great video!
Trapped under ice
Master of Puppets and Orion are just out of this world.
Did you forgot the harmonies of The Day That Never Comes solo?
Harmony type: L A R S
