- Do we drive the Rv back to Florida or do we fly back and someone else drive it back? Stay in hotel? Stay in Portland, Oregon? Go 3,000 miles back to Florida for UF Health Shands hospital?

My wife and I are in Gainesville, Fl as we speak. Our grandson was born early at 29 weeks. We are in Santa Fe RV Resort, about 9 miles from Shands. We will be here for next 6-8 weeks or so. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know. We have a 2023 F350 Diesel so can move your RV or drive your rig for you, help with rides or whatever. Just let us know.

Another reason why there should always be a second person who is able to drive the rig, set up, break camp, etc. , especially with us older folks. Yes, heading home is what you need to do. Wish someone in your family could fly out to you guys and help with the drive home. Prayers!
Karin, I explained this in a video the first medical emergency he had - even if I knew how, I’m so stressed, I wouldn’t feel safe doing it. Larry would be asleep while I drove and of no help.
This way, I’m constantly assisting. Larry only concentrates on driving.
Every one is different and won’t know how they will respond until it happens.
Others? Yes. Share driving.
Yes. Another driver would be great. But Larry prefers taking care of it himself

But the issue is part of the thought process for buying our next RV as we have health issues as well and I want to be able to feel comfortable with driving the rig. So please do not take it personally! Praying you guys make it home safe and as fast as Larrys health allows!!
I think this is the best decision for you, nothing like being home and with your own health care team and family. It will reduce the additional unnecessary stress. Get better soon Larry.

Getting back to your home hospital where you have confidence in your care is a smart decision. You'll have family support to help get through whatever is ahead of you. I'm praying you get there with no issues,that you settle answers and care you need so that healing comes quickly and your back on the road. I do agree that sharing your story is a good thing!

Home hospital is best. ASAP! You are blessed to have offers of help. Good folks will step up and be there for you when needed. You could even get part way home & find a good place to park your rig temporarily, then fly home. Health is paramount & sometimes time sensitive. Go with care & blessings.

Offer still stands! We're in Farmersville, Texas off of US HWY 380 so if you need an overnight stop, we have a long flat concrete driveway and a 50amp rv plug if that helps.

I'm sure right now is not the time due to all the stress but maybe Alice could take the wheel between rest areas in the rural parts of the interstate. She would only need to get on and off the interstate without dealing with a lot of traffic. Once we get another rig, I will be relearning to drive again. It's kind of scary to think to do it but if Alice can be married to Larry, she can tackle anything! Larry... you are wonderful too.

But all my strength is used for helping Larry - none left for driving.
I was so stressed just driving the dually.
Maybe once we have a homebase, we will get a small drivable since we won’t be full time

Prayers for your travels. I understand Alice’s anxiety about Portland driving. My husband was DX with pancreatic cancer 12/2023. Our home state at that time was Oregon. He received treatment at OHSU and I would have to drive our stick shift car back and forth from an RV park in Wilsonville. Don’t get me started on driving to appointments on the hill or their parking garages and trying not to roll into people when leaving. 😂 We got great care at OHSU but it has always been our dream to live in Florida. We did get my brother to move our Class A because my husband is too sick to drive. We live in Bushnell, FL at Blueberry Hill RV Park. It is a nice park. It’s right off of 75. I looked and it’s only 1.5 hrs from Gainesville. We drive to Moffitt in Tampa for his care. The rates here are reasonable. I will keep praying for both of you.

as we age this is the very thing we worried about when we decided to downsize our rig. it was vital to us that both of us could completely handle the rv in the case one of us gets ill or out of commission. i am glad everything worked out but, in our opinion, its essential that both of you need to have confidence and the ability to handle the rig.

I think you are making the right decision. Having two drivers is not necessary or logical for everyone owning an RV. You will know when to hold them or when to fold them. Stay safe.

It’s still stressful but being somewhere that your more familiar, have family & a hospital & doctors that know you & your health conditions is just a little more of a comfort for both of you. My wife and I are currently campground host at Gold Head Branch State Park. We have plenty of open sites here at the moment. The park is in Keystone Heights about 45 minutes from Shands.

Scary stuff. I knew Larry had issues but didn't realize it was MS - this new diagnosis just adds to his problem. I sure hope things go well on your trip "home" and that Larry gets the care he needs and is on the road to recovery a.s.a.p. Nothing like being in your own bed to help with the healing process.

His MOGAD is a rare form of MS. It’s “controlled” but not curable.
At least this sounds like it’s fixed with surgery.

good you've got it figured out. as far as Larry's tummy goes. sorry about the whole waiting game. it took 6 months from start to finish to get my gallbladder out. boy was that fun. i.e. I feel your pain. I think your doing the right thing. if you can get the docs "back home" on board that's the best way to go. hopefully they will be ready to get to work on him when you get there. safe travels, hug Scruffy and take care.

@@DownsizingMakesCents yes it was not fun. the delay was due to back up from covid. and just all the b.s. there from. I had so many covid tests at that time it was crazy. I hope they get Larry in as soon as you are all set up in a park and ready to go. waiting for this stuff is the worst.

Well, I really hope you guys are successful and don’t run into any more problems. My hopes and prayers go with you. As a nurse, it is my recommendation that Larry starts drinking high protein shakes or anything that has protein liquid in it and as many of them as he can handle a day, I know this is difficult, but it’ll help with the trip

Good luck guys! Whatever you decide is the the best decision. I don't blame you for wanting to get back to familiar health care and family. I would probably do the same. If you are forced to sit around for weeks waiting for the next step in the process, why not spend that time getting to a better situation?

I was thinking could you fly one of your sons out to you to help with the driving. After watching your issues, I have Marie starting to drive the truck with the camper to get familiar with the process. We are learning from your situation. Hang in there.
I’ve told my husband the same thing!
Me too…unfortunately I don’t think it would be safe for me to drive the truck & fiver with my carpal tunnel flare up. I’m getting a cortisone shot in a couple of weeks so if that works I will be able to drive. I can drive just the truck but with a 30’ fifth wheel attached my response is unsure. I’m not afraid & if I had to I’d learn as I’m driving!

Can you tolerate protein drinks . My husband likes Fairlife protein drinks. Ensure also is good for adding calories. Pray all goes well on your trip back to Florida.

Don’t know which way you are heading but if you need a hospital in the middle of the country, UNMC in Omaha Nebraska is a good choice. If you are going on I 80 you will go through Omaha.
