- Test your Class A CDL Road Skills Ride Along - Austin, Texas
This video is an example of what you would experience when taking a Class A CDL Road Test. In this video, and with many Class A CDL Road Tests, you will experience the following: turning out of parking lots crossing lanes of traffic - crossing railroad tracks near intersections where you need to turn tightly to the right - merging into turn lanes - entering highways - driving highway speeds - exiting highways - turning left at multiple turn lane intersections - driving down curvy roads at low speeds - taking tight left turns - driving on roads where lanes merge - stopping and starting on inclines - driving on roads where there are no stripes - driving on roads where one lane opens to two lanes - making a u turn in tight areas - (backing and parallel parking* not shown in this video, but at minute 13:15 - 13:25 you can see where you might be able to practice that maneuver) merging into turn lanes dealing with traffic and overhanging obstructions. If there is anything you see that I missed or have any questions then please leave a comment and I will do my best to get a good answer for you.

My CDL Skills Test (Class A) is tomorrow, wish me luck!
Edit: I passed :)
No
+@@Fusion991 Wow. Thanks.
Good luck!!
Thanks!
I am very happy that you passed. Have a safe wonderful life👍
Just passed my class A with no restrictions. Remember when I used to watch this video begging God to help me pass. Brothers and sisters, if I can do it, believe me when I say you can too!
Amen
Congrats bro
I I just passed my knowledge air brakes and combo weight studying for the road test now
Amen
Thank you
Was it easy?
I like how he's actually instructing you and no yelling at you for mistakes....thats a good trainer
I went and got my CDL 8 years ago and my trainer was constantly yelling and belittling me. By the end of my week on the road with him, I was a mess and quit. Went back to working in an office. Now I'm about to get a job driving school bus. At least my CDL isn't going to waste.
@@cellospot give it another try man don’t let one bad trainer ruin your whole experience with truck driving there’s more good than bad out there
@@cellospot you should had asked the school for a different instructor
@@cellospot😂😂😂😂 I had one of those once he was a maniac
I’m an owner-op and have been driving trucks for 26 years. You reminded me a lot of my instructor that I had back in 1994. Laid back and relaxed but yet very attentive to every situation. This really helped me to overcome the nervousness that many new students have to driving a rig. This guy will be a very good driver because he obviously has had the proper training. I wish that a lot of these yahoos that I see out here had instructors like you, the roads would be a lot safer. 👍
That's awesome, Thank you for your insight! We appreciate you.
You ever had anxiety attacks while beeing a truck driver??
@@donkiko6708 no, I have not, but I can see why you might ask that question. Remaining calm is one of the key factors in truck driving. If you lose your cool, you are doomed to make costly mistakes.
@@SoCal780 I'm a brazilian guy 38 yo hard working. Do you know any trucker company that may be interested to hire oversees immigrants as a truckers in America Sr? Can you help me?
@@EMERSONBUCHENER there are LOTS of them. I see (well, we all do) immigrants from all over the world driving for many different companies, including my own. If you can get to America legally and are qualified to drive a truck, you will have no problem. If you do need training, you can get that too. There is a driver shortage here in the U.S. and we are in demand. I would look into Schneider if I were in your shoes. Stay away from Swift, they have a horrible reputation and are the butt of everyone’s jokes. I hear their training is lackluster at best, which is why they have so many accidents. There are MANY companies out there, so do some research. I wish you well.
I'm getting nervous just watching. Big respect to all the truck drivers.
Thank you!
When he stalled out, man, brings back memories. 😂 The nervousness one can feel those first few months of training. 😂
Thank god for automatic trucks lol
Before driving truck I had a motorcycle I’ve stalled so many times when leaving stop light. I stalled out in the School’s truck making a left on a light. Everyone was honking at me. I was like “oh well” lol
Im class of 2024, and this is the career path im taking. Ill be hella nervous driving one of those trucks but that dont stop me from getting my CDL 😅
I just took my road test today in Alaska and it was absolutely nerve racking but I passed. Did great at Alley Docks, parallels and backing. Ok at up and down shifting but during the examination the pressure nearly did me in. Thank you KP Driving, Kenai
Good stuff!
So all of you have to give test on manual trucks in US? Here in Canada test is on auto but I heard they are changing rules from next year that if someone gives test on auto he can only drive auto truck
@@Punkbars you can do Manual or Auto but if you do auto you will have a manual restriction on your CDL
I need help with alley docking, any tips?
This is cool, I live in Austin Texas and I’m getting ready to go take my test so I’m watching these videos and I recognize literally everywhere he is going 😂😂😂 and they even passed by my apartment 🤣
That’s wassup I’m in Austin too on the northside
This instructor was great. My first road lesson the instructor was watching conspiracy videos on his phone, trying to show me them while I was driving a tractor trailer for the first time. My second road lesson, he did the same but he also fell asleep during the lesson. Good times, I learned a lot...
You remind me of the guy ( ex trucker driver ) who taught me how to drive a car when i was 16- i still do everything he taught me 30 years ago. excellent job sir !
I just passed my 1A drive test, air break, coupling and uncoupling, general knowledge and pre trip.
Taking a month off work to go see my dad since covid has made it hard to see him in a few years. I can't wait to get behind a truck and drive again. Watching cause I miss my instructors and their constant constructive criticism. 😂
You can take the girl out of the truck, but you can't take the truck out of the girl. 😂🚚
Can't wait to start driving. ❤️ Thanks for these videos.
When i got my license back in the late 90s all i had to do was go to a parkinglot and a guy had cones set up. All i had to do is go through the cones and back the truck. He gave me an envelope and i took that to dmv and they gave me my cdl. No schooling, none of this stuff. My first trip out in a tractor trailer by myself was actually only like the second time i was out on the road. And i had a manual truck with 10 gears. I drove for 2 years. I never forget that feeling getting those license. My boss immediately boosted my pay up $4 more an hour. That was alot back then.
This why I laugh when super truckers say CDLs get handed out nowadays. No they don’t. the modern cdl test is way harder.
@lefthanded5473 you have to earn those cdls now. 20+ years ago, they did hand them out.
Also very important make sure you call out all your Possible hazards, street signs, weather condition, road conditions, bridge check state regulated, bridge conditions ect.. it’s very important that you talk about what’s going on around you!
Yes, I agree!
I just pass on 12/23/20 no pull-ups pass on my first try! Boy was I Nervous
Thank you for posting this! I am going to get my CDL after high school and am trying to gain as much knowledge about the trucking industry as possible beforehand! The student is very good at driving the truck and the instructor seems like a cool dude!
Smart Trucking on UA-cam is a wealth of knowledge for you.
I’ll check it out right now! Thanks!
Best way is to start working for a non-cdl commercial company and learn the way the air brakes work and get familiar with trucks. You already will know most of it from youtube but its good to understand how to drive a vehicle with a certain height and weight. Other than the first year, its a great career and since you're starting off young you'll have a nice advantage over the people who start in their 20's and 30's like me lol
EightSnaps no just get your cdl and work on it
@@AlecDaStar Already did. Just explaining some ways to get into it.
Whenever I do get my CDL license I would want this instructor. Who doesn't freak out over something so small he would just tell you things and tells his experience.
“Anytime you’re crossing over traffic, you don’t have the right of way. We have the right of way.” 🦉🦉
Don't forget to signal until you are straight into the innermost lane (turn completed). Stay in the rightmost lane you can to go where you need. Anticipate 15 seconds and stay back to see the wheels ahead when you stop. Go slow and don't speed up too fast... or be in a situation to slow down too fast. Stop behind the stopsign but creeping up after that to see is okay. Stay in your lane. Don't touch the lines or curbs even a little. Watch your speed. Turn wide and late. Stay high and tight to the outside so your offset wheels don't shortcut too much. Wait for traffic opportunities. Don't block traffic unnecessrily. Take it slow. Anticipate stops and hidden stopsigns. Read signs as you go by. Check mirrors every 5 seconds or so at least. Watch for stale green lights. Anticipate and communicate. Signal.
Are you an instructor or are you a driver?
His instructor is really good
🇺🇸
Did my training at Road Masters in Florida back in 1997. Great school but my on road trainer was a grouchy woman but she was fun. This guy is great! Relaxed but attentive and detail oriented with turns, shifting, approaching intersections, traffic.......etc. Great trainer!
Good stuff
I am from slovenia, got my truck test in 2 days. Hope that one day i will drive in your beautiful country..
here in GA during training we have to stop before the white line on a stop sign and or red traffic light. it has to be visible to the driver and the examiner
Good to kno. I'm in GA and currently studying for my CDLs. Thanks for the tip! 😊
Just casually eating a pomegranate while testing.
Leg crossed too..Lol..Tells me he has some type of belief in the Driver!
Thanks for watching the video!
I was trying to figure out what he was eating the whole ride
@@michaelboyle9512 are you stupid. You have never seen a pomegranate? Did you think it was a watermelon
@@tmo.48 you are so lame you haven't figured out how to upload an image in your icon or create any content to your stupid channel
This video is spot on I just took my CDL skills test from a third party CDL examiner and passed it. But as far as the gentlemen he did pretty good
Just passed my class B with no restrictions. I was so nervous! Many ask why I went for my class B and not just go for my A. Well.. I’m new to driving commercially and I wanted to get some experience behind the wheel with class B vehicles/trucks and gain more skill with that before I drive with a trailer. Class A makes me super nervous. I’m watching these videos to see how others do and maybe I’ll gain some more knowledge and confidence, but one things for sure no matter how many videos a person watches it will never fully prepare them for the real deal. I still love watching these videos though to gain some knowledge off others mistakes and their techniques. Everyone take care and safe driving!
What I’ve learned from my pops as a non truck driver is ALWAYS give truck drivers two R’s room and respect.
I turn 31 this month, single with no children ! I’m really thinking about this 🙏🏾
Don’t think about it too long bro just jump in to it !
Do it. Pretty good money too.
I did my Class 1 (Canadian Semi license.) and this instructor reminds me of my instructor. This is a good instructor.
It's weird that he's getting trained on a 10 speed, it doesn't even teach you how to split gears. In British Columbia, you're legally required to take your license test with a minimum 13 speed manual. Anything less and you get an Automatic restriction.
This is so helpful
I'm in my trucking school and can't wait to get on the road.
Thank you!
Is that Jason Keene?? He’s definitely one of the best. ACC is where I got my CDL instruction as well. Worth it!!
Yes, its Jason!
Curb is an automatic fail where I am but this is helpful. Thanks!!
Start CDL schoo in 2 days.. got my permit, on to the driving part. Hella nervous. Pray for me lol man ive been watching videos on driving and the 120 inspection. Super nervous
Best video I've seen thus far and an actual visual alot of these videos do more harm than good
Thanks!
Damn!!! I need a teacher like that.... chilly and calm
Its nice when the teacher is relaxed
You can tell this trainer is passionate and patient with his teaching ! I would love to have you as my trainer 😢..
Had you gotten your cdl already? So how did it went?
Man I really appreciate you guys posting video it gives me somewhat confidence I really wanted to quit school cause my instructor was telling at me real Loud n I was doing better than this thank you guys so much N I'm not shaming you at all I understand the amount of pressure the beginning stages can bring
Always check you speed and keep distance 💯 safety first
Very true!
My favorite instructor would shout “Left Mirror, Straight Ahead, Right Mirror, Straight Ahead, Left…” with a dotted “How high was that bridge?” Or a,” What did that sign say?” Immediately back into “Left Mirror, Right…”
This is seared in my brain 25 years later. And i went into ITS and only drove one year. Lol
If it's a toss between two automobiles taking a turn before me - although I have the right of way - and my truck bending some metal, I'd rather not challenge them and let them satisfy their ego instead of having to pull to the side of the road to fill out unnecessary paper work and f**king up my day - or worse. Drivers instinctively will almost always try to beat a commercial vehicle to a turn due to lack of patience and empathy.
Yep, you are right about that!
Still can't get over that the dude's just fucking casually eating a pomegranate Lmao
Instructor just a boss widdit, eating a pomegranate chillin calling out the shots ! Lol good job on the drive tho
Thanks USOROB!
@ 12:48 ----> I know this is training, but isn't STALLING an instant FAIL on the road test ?
@ 22:54 ----> Don't you have to be COMPLETELY in 1 lane while traveling thru an intersection ?
I want a cdl but I’m scared I’m gonna wreck the 18 wheeler gives me anxiety just watching this
You would do good bro 👌🏾
Sign up for CDL school through one of the big trucking companies or pay the 5 grand for regular school, Trucking company will pay for the training but you have to sign on with that company for usually 2 years.
Xando -Topic 🇺🇸Big rig ARE intimidating, aren’t they? Here’s something...find a friend that’s a trucker, see if you could ride with them for at least 1 week, then check out some of the local colleges to see if they offer Truck Driver Training. Yes, I did say a college. Some are offering those courses, believe me! The purpose is to get a feel for it before you pay big $$$ for the training, then check the academies around you or maybe check a local trucking company to see if they might offer something for you. Trucking can be fun and exciting. There’s a great deal to trucking though.
Thanks for watching the video!
Good response, thank you for your input!!
Man these very so much from state to state, as someone who literally just graduated and passed his road test in New York, our instructors would have lost their minds from some of the stuff done in this video!
how was it? how was the road test and the parking test?
@@PrincessofthePrincesses the backing/parking would be very difficult without any practice but with a good amount of practice and effort it was simple. The road test is different for everyone. You must pay attention and call out every obstacle and hazard you see!
Mad respect to all the truck drivers it looks fucking scary driving them big ass trailers lol
Thanks for the comment!
Palm the wheel which is a fail, not using two hands at all time, Rangefinder but, he recover started it up quick enough. But he still did good! Just always remember to keep two hands 🙌 on the wheel unless you are right about to shift. New York
Thanks for the info
I couldn't be an instructor. The student was driving good, but I'd be a nervous wreck!
You and me Both!!

Surprised that the trainer didn't catch this or even comment on it but at 20:27 he cross the solid white line too soon. in many states that would procure a citation...
Good catch
Some of rules for this are ridiculous

A lot of foreign drivers don't follow many driving rules in their home country so when they come to the USA they don't understand we are big on rules here. In latin countries, stop signs and traffic lights are more like guidelines.
