Dyna Jets 1 of 3: Seymour Duncan Dynasonic vs TV Jones T-Armond Shootout

  • Tim "Proteus" Harman and Scott Rust in Part 1 of their impromptu play-test of Seymour Duncan DynaSonic™ and TV Jones T-Armond pickups. The guitars are matching Cadillac Green Duo Jets with brass Tru-Arc™ bridges and identical new strings (to make the test fair).
NOTE: both guitars are played through both amps, many times, back-to-back, by both players. Tim plays through the 40-watt 3x10 Gretsch Variety; Scott runs the 3/4-watt miracle amp he designed and built through a 1x12 cabinet.
This was recorded at the 2010 gretschpages.com Nashville Roundup, and was originally streamed live to ustream. A small group of GDP members listens, analyzes and discusses the pickups.

To all the people who didn't really watch the vid, but decided to bash it on the description:
If you were actually watching you would notice both guys have their own cable, being used on both guitars. So one guy is comparing guitars on one amp, the other guy is comparing both on the other amp.

Did you not note that BOTH guitars were played through BOTH amps, many times, by both players, on material as similar as possible?

In isolation they re still very close. Within a band or studio mix environment I doubt that these pickups could be distinguished. It's another gear rabbit hole better not gone down.
It's still BS. Scott's ears may be golden, but mine are (old) flesh and blood, Type A-1 ears, no less and no more.
Bottom line: You want to sound better? Play better.

Good review. Both pickups have very fine adjustments to shape the tone. I went with the TV Jones on my custom Cabronita.

Great demo - in other videos as confirmed by you guys, the Dynasonics seem more compressed and aggressive while the T-Armonds sound cleaner and more airy with greater headroom

The difference is quite remarkable, actually. Both are great, but they are really different from one another. More than I expected, even. In general, I liked the TVJ pups on Tim and the SD pups on Scott. Could be their amps, could be their individual approaches to the instrument.
To me, the TVJ has a quite different transient attack. It has more 3D "chime," whereas the SD sounds a bit more rounded off in the attack. The SD doesn't "pop" quite as hard. But the SD has that slightly more compressed sound that works so, so well in a blues context, for example. They're both really excellent.
In terms of comparison to other iconic sounds, based upon what I hear in this vid, the TVJ leans toward Rickenbacker, and the SD leans toward Gibson. Both very, very nice.

I loved how you described the differences and fully agree. I guess because the SDs have less 'pop' in the attack, we could also say that they are less 'twangy'. I play blues guitar and can appreciate this quality as it adds to smoother note changes as compared to what a rockabilly or country player might require.

I just got a 2006 Silver Jet with the stock dynasonics. I wonder how the TV Jones compare to these?

TV Jones seem to have a bit more output without sacrificing sweetness or brightness. that just makes it the better deal to me.

I own a Silver Jet 57 reissue that I put T-Armonds in, and I used to own a vintage 57 Duo Jet. To me the SD sound closer to the vintage than the T-Armonds. Both are pretty great, though.

Hello I been trying for the last 15 years looking for my buddy Scott Rustt. Please if anyone can get a hold him please give him my number 915-204-4993 Jesse. Thanks.

Hey Daniel Scroggins, I know he use too. We used to be in a band together and he was starting his amp and guitar business but I lost in touch with him in the 90's. I'm still trying to find him with no luck.

For me at least, TV Jones make the best sounding pickups to my ears.
Seymour Duncan just aren't in the same league. I have a La Cabronita I made myself which is routed for the TV Jones Classics I bought for it. I didn't know til the other day that TV Jones T90's (and I'm hoping their T-Armonds are too) are made to fit the same sized routing as the Classics, so I'm very tempted to try mixing them in various combinations and positions and see what happens 👍

T-Armond sounds nice on bridge, in my opinion.

  • @aaronbrown0417

Tv Jones is more clear and well balanced all the way across in the highs lows and mids....whereas the seymour Duncan was muddy in the lows and mids but had the highs.... and since the guitar is a midrange instrument it would not be heard as well in a life situation

  • @636117
    @636117 10 років тому +2

Sounds like the SDs are brighter & clearer, if only by a small margin. Perhaps actually micing the amps would have helped, rather than having so much ambient room sound

TVJ for me. They sound more full and present. The SD sound almost quacky and distant. Not that either is anything less than great, but my preference is the TVJ.

  • @Sirstarfish

TV Jones = Fuller and Sweeter High End. SDs = Less Overtones and more 'Hi-Fi' High End.

  • @MuleResonatorGuitars

If I might suggest, great care was taken to match strings and even bridges, but one guitar was played through a 40 watt Gretsch amp and the other was through a custom 3/4 watt amp. That's a pretty glaring difference. Part two leave the bridges alone and use the same amp.

They both played each guitar so you hear them through both amps

Well the TV Jones win hands down. Although I have to say neither sounds like a Gretsch to me.
