I own ALL THE GUITARS. Walking around the house with my turquoise glitter Danelectro. It’s been in tune for 5 years. Sounds like magic just acoustically. Feels exciting, looks so unique, the detailing on every little feature. Jimmy page had the wall of Les Paul’s but recorded so many classics on the little lipsticks😹 I can hang my danelectro on the wall FOR A YEAR! in New Orleans humidity. It’s gonna be in tune when. Pick it up (?!?…. Why is everyone else a century (almost) behind this simple/ flawless design?
Judging by the position of the switches on the Gretsch, you might have the "mud" switch engaged - which is pretty unrepresentative of how a Gretsch pickup sounds like.
I love P-90's, and had them in a 78 Les Paul Pro Deluxe. The only drawback is the hum - some clubs I've played that have old/bad circuitry had them humming so bad, the sound guy was asking me to use a different guitar. So, I switched to Lollar mini-hums. But I do think they sound great, and have a nice growl to them.
it's also me... wouldn't say "slay", but yeah, to me it sounded like they was the only ones that sounded good in every way it was put (instead of others i liked a lot with certain sounds but i found dissatisfying with others). but then again, i love p90 too :)
For some stuff the Tele's and Strats were strong contenders, the PAF was good too, but yeah, the P90 was probably the most versatile and sounded genuinely good in all tests. I absolutely love them because of that, plus they're kind of an underdog pickup. I've played pretty much anything with them, from jazz and twangy country to extreme styles like heavy sludge and stoner or old school metal. You could say metal was invented on a P90 powered guitar, hence the SG Special Tony Iommi played on early Sabbath days.
P-90's are the original Les Paul pickup. Les Paul himself was not a fan initially of the PAF's, since he didn't feel they had the same tone profile as the P-90. The PAF's were added to be due to there "humbucking" properties, not because of their tone. The pickup that didn't hum was viewed as a more "modern" design at the time.
No talking, no bias. Just listen and take away what you will. Awesome. Not a bad sound in the bunch. What I got out of this video? I need more guitars.
I agree with everyone else - this is the very best pickup comparison ever. No talking and quick changes from one example to the other. Of course, the guitars will have an influence on the sound, but these are the very guitars that these pickups are frequently seen in. Beautifully done. Thanks to the folks at Reverb!!
Definitely the video to bookmark for the next time we're asked: "But how many more guitar do you need?" It will be easier to say: "look honey, just watch this video…"
Thank you for the video! Mini-humbuckers got the tone I crave, far and away. But I was surprised to hear that dirty bridge on the Jaguar! So much power for such an unassuming pickup!
MatthewMyersHere Agreed. I had recently thought about buying a jag, but didn't want to shell out big bucks for an American , so I bought a used ( but extremely mint) squire modified jag. Turns out I freakin love it! The pickups are very sensitive and crispy. And the two tone circuits provide a nice versatility. Wanna see some wicked jaguar with great tone? Watch the live at kexp performance of Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dogs.
The Strat, Tele, Gold Foil, P90, and all the humbuckers all sound consistently impressive to my ears, but the rest no doubt have sounds that work for specific styles.
Josef Sperber love p90s, but those gold foils have something in them... The other ones I guess just got utilized so much in specific genres that they get kind of overlooked, the jazzmaster sounded great with dirt to my ears, and that's a "surf rock" guitar, usually played clean, maybe more people should start using this guitars outside of the genre they are associated
In the all of the power'tron segments the tone switch is in the midrange position rather than wide open. However, in the dirty bridge segment it gives a decent cocked wah tone. But in the clean segments it may not be the best representation of how 'tron type pickups sound.
This is the Platinum Standard for shootout videos... I've watched this more times than any other video on UA-cam. I really wish I could click like every time.
Interesting assertion because in this demo the P90s are among the top three muddiest sounding pickups. And in most other demos and shootouts I’ve checked out, mini humbuckers, Fender wide range humbuckers, and Full fidelity Fitertron humbuckers, and even some true vintage spec PAFs all have kicked P90s ass for clarity.
I'd really like to hear those clean tones with a heavier touch as well. That lick was feather soft. Really nice, but didn't push the pickups at all. You don't really get to hear the character until you test their output.
Surprising winners (completely subjective, of course): - Mini humbuckers had an impressive clarity while still being warm - Wide range humbuckers did everything the PAF did but livelier and more articulate Unsurprising winners: - Strat neck pickup, a tough act to follow - Tele bridge; always crisp, but this time warmer than the Strat too, to my ear - P90s Surprising losers: - Jazzmaster was noticeably buzzier than everything else, and the bridge crossed over from - Filtertron in the bridge sounded like both the highs and lows were cut, like playing through an old radio Unsurprising losers: - Tele neck - Lipstick
Got my headphones on while my girl is watching me listen to this. She says #1 on the stankface meter is the P90 riding dirty on that neck. That’s a metric I can support. P90’s it is then.
Thankyou for this. I was given a one off prototype electro acoustic by a luthier friend which needs the bridge pup swapping out and this has helped me decide to go for a lipstick 😊
Thanks for the really great tool! Out of curiosity, why is the 'mud switch' is engaged on the Power Jet? Cutting the high frequencies is making those pickups lose their wonderful sparkle.
Just for the fun of it, my favourite pickup sounds in this video. Neck Clean - Gold Foil ............ Bridge Clean - Gold Foil (again.) Neck Dirty - PAF Humbucker ............ Bridge Dirty - P90 I didn't care much at all for the Toasters, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Lipsticks, or Modern Humbuckers in any position with this amp & settings. It was the first time that I've ever had a good listen to Gold Foils and overall I thought they were the best and could have picked them for all 4 settings. I'd quite like to get a set of these if they're still available to buy....does anyone know if they are, and who makes them?
One of the best pick up designs of all time. If I lose or get rid of my Firebird I'm immediately getting another mini-humbucker equipped guitar. Very underrated pickup.
I'm not sure of that particular gretsch model's wiring, but it appears that the mud switch is engaged. The middle position keeps it out of the circuit.
Impressive demo! The minis are pure joy! Is here anyone who knows how they differ from Gibson Firebird's mini hb? Since I play a 2005 firebird V (stock pickups), I was wondering if there's any difference or not with those LP's minis...
This was so incredibly cool. I hope you guys do more shootouts like this. It's SO well done and informative. You had the best possible examples for each pickup style. The licks were short and tasteful and any variables were eliminated. Man, this was so great. Bravo Reverb!!!
There are so many variables in play. for example height of each pick up determining the output. Louder always sounds better, so it's difficult to judge apples to apples on a level playing field. Reminds me of the Coke and Pepsi taste tests in the 80s. No one knew what they were drinking
Surprised at those lipstick pickups, they sound great for everything but a dirty bridge sound. A lipstick in the neck and P90 bridge would be an interesting combo.
on clean it's the P90's for me & on dirty that sweet all-time classic Tele. Decent sound on every mode also that Gretsch. Jaguar may be the worst overall even tho i love their design.
Great playing! I liked all of the example riffs. All of the pickups sounded pretty good to me. Am I correct that the P90's had more punch, but got a little fuzzy when driven? Awesome video.
Hi 1st of all thank you so much for this excellent video Very very precious Is it me or the differences are not that great from one model to the other ? and a EQ could reduce them even further ? Thanks again and kind regards, gino
Thank you Reverb!!! You have provided the perfect excuse and justification for guitar acquisition syndrome (GAS). Now if anyone asks why you need another guitar, you can reference this handy and visual aid no less!
I love the mini humbuckers overall. A underwound p90 would be fun. Also the Gold foil here is the highest output one I've seen. I had a old Kingston/Teisco gold foil that was 4.56k and clear sounding. The Tron style pickup here should have been the classic on a standard her or a vintage Jet in general.
For me: 1. Tele 2. P90's 3. Jaguar 4. Strat 5. Mini HB 6. Didn't care for most of the others but I'm sure they have their place. 7. Dead last: wide range HB's. Can't stand them. Way too harsh.
Personally I liked them all but the filtertrons and lipsticks were my least favorite. Maybe they need a little more dialing in and that could just be bc they are more niche sounds. I like the single coil comparisons bc it basically shows fender’s single coil range from thickest to thinnest. And i was really really impressed by the versatility of the fender thinline HBs
Since the buttons don't work any more...

Last time I checked they still worked. Only on desk tops though.
This is THE best pickup comparison I've ever seen. I can't believe this hasn't been done before.
Agreed 😊
For such a basic and “cheaply” designed pickup, the lipsticks sound amazing. I’m gonna have to get a Danelectro to add to my collection.
I own ALL THE GUITARS. Walking around the house with my turquoise glitter Danelectro. It’s been in tune for 5 years. Sounds like magic just acoustically. Totally agree
I agree. I was surprised how much I liked the lipstick pickups. The PRS pickups were also my favorite.

Except Lipstick
I am so enamored by Jazzmasters. So proud I own one. The neck pickup sounds just heavenly!
Me too!
creo que quisiste decir so in love
Is it just me or did the P-90's slay the rest?
They're just louder. :) (I love P-90s, BTW.)
I love P-90's, and had them in a 78 Les Paul Pro Deluxe. The only drawback is the hum - some clubs I've played that have old/bad circuitry had them humming so bad, the sound guy was asking me to use a different guitar. So, I switched to Lollar mini-hums. now I'm going to have to buy P90's
I didn't know that about PAFs. never been a fan until now.
P-90's in a Les Paul is like Ice Cream
Same
Yep.
Yeah they have a pretty nice tone I ag
Toasters are my favorite for that chime. I mostly play chords so that’s what I’m listening for mostly
No talking, no bias. Just listen and take away what you will. Awesome. Not a bad sound in the bunch. What I got out of this video? I need more guitars.
pretty much all the humbucker guitars sounded bad to me except the gibson mini humbucker, and im a metal guy...

Of course, the guitars will have an influence on the sound, but these are the very guitars that these pickups are frequently seen in. Beautifully done. Thanks to the folks at Reverb!!
Mini hums have it all for me. Great cleans, enough midrange, articulation without being shrill, and plenty of output
How many guitars and pickups does one need? This video answers the question... ALL OF THEM!
Cassidy Bisher 😅
Hassan Berjawi : )
Definitely the video to bookmark for the next time we're asked: "But how many more guitar do you need?" It will be easier to say: "look honey, just watch this video…"
one single coil guitar and one humbucker guitar, compressor and eq and you've got all of them
Thank you for the video! Mini-humbuckers got the tone I crave, far and away. But I was surprised to hear that dirty bridge on the Jaguar! So much power for such an unassuming pickup!

@@kevinjamiesonbelou Ribot FTW!
The modern claw bridges are way hot for single coils, - like 13k , - makes for some unique sounds with the phase switches.
The Strat, Tele, Gold Foil, P90, and all the humbuckers all sound consistently impressive to my ears, but the rest no doubt have sounds that work for specific styles.

@@ducas8937 Those Gold Foils are consistently great, but I heard they don't react well to the volume knob especially with distortion.
Reverb, this is a FANTASTIC video. Please, please do more comparison videos like this with the interactive controls.
Easy for me. Neck pickup = Strat... Bridge pickup = Tele. Done.
Alex McHiggins no need to complicate things, those two guitars is all you need, nothing else comes close to those sounds
Funk63 I would just have one of each guitar can't go wrong that way :) both useful for different things
By far the greatest pickup comparison video out there. Well complimented by Joe's savvy playing.
In the all of the power'tron segments the tone switch is in the midrange position rather than wide open. However, in the dirty bridge segment it gives a decent cocked wah tone. But in the clean segments it may not be the best representation of how 'tron type pickups sound.
Aha - I normally like Filtertrons, and these samples didn't sound right to me! Thanks for explaining it!
This is the Platinum Standard for shootout videos... I've watched this more times than any other video on UA-cam. I really wish I could click like every time.
- Do you know what's a "mud switch"?
- Absolutely not.
- Very well. Here's a Gretsch with only ONE switch.
...But great comparison, by the way!
this is the video all guitarist needed for so long
The P-90's sounded great. I love the tone of them.
p90's; Beef of a Humbucker. Clarity of a Single Coil
Levi Jesse
And belive it or not when you turn down the volume way low it does a acoustic sound (im serious main)
Single coil in the bridge p-90 in the middle and humbucker in the neck.
They are magic like that. They can even be like a giant-sounding Strat pickup.
Levi Jesse I thought the cleans of the P90 sounded bad compared to the strat lol, strat sounded the best in my opinion, very full sound
Interesting assertion because in this demo the P90s are among the top three muddiest sounding pickups. The Strat, P90 and PAF sound incredible on neck clean. Wasn't expecting the Strat to sound so incredibly rich and warm.
Honestly. How do I get this beautiful sound to come out of my strat?

Who the fuck cares?! Does that make you feel special?
5150squash. No, but it's funny that your life is so depressing that you have to be that vulgar for no reason.
A little bit off.
P-90 is the obvious standout, that being said they all sound great
Dang it!! I cant help but love the stratocaster, gets me every time.
This is reference level material for people interested in swapping out pickups or wondering what style of guitar would suit them. Well done!
That Rick sound perfect...
are you serious ? the most amazing and detailed pickup comparison video on youtube and you roll off the tone of gretsch ? you must be joking
tolga şişko he had to roll it off otherwise all the others would of sounded bad in comparison;-)
I was wondering why the Gretch sounded so bad! Like somebody stuffed a dirty rag into your amp speaker cone.

Surprising winners (completely subjective, of course):
- Mini humbuckers had an impressive clarity while still being warm
- Wide range humbuckers did everything the PAF did but livelier and more articulate
Unsurprising winners:
- Strat neck pickup, a tough act to follow
- Tele bridge; always crisp, but this time warmer than the Strat too, to my ear
- P90s
Surprising losers:
- Jazzmaster was noticeably buzzier than everything else, and the bridge crossed over from
- Filtertron in the bridge sounded like both the highs and lows were cut, like playing through an old radio
Unsurprising losers:
- Tele neck

They sure sound more alike than different. You could be in a cover band and play a full set with any of these.
Those P-90s win for me though.
Got my headphones on while my girl is watching me listen to this. She says #1 on the stankface meter is the P90 riding dirty on that neck. That’s a metric I can support. P90’s it is then.
This video made me realize I like how Jazzmasters sound.
Looks wise it’s o.k. I like the Rick 335 in terms of looks and sound together
OMG! Thanks so much for doing this, Reverb! You guys are awesome!

Just for the fun of it, my favourite pickup sounds in this video.

I didn't care much at all for the Toasters, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Lipsticks, or Modern Humbuckers in any position with this amp & settings.
It was the first time that I've ever had a good listen to Gold Foils and overall I thought they were the best and could have picked them for all 4 settings. I'd quite like to get a set of these if they're still available to buy....does anyone know if they are, and who makes them?
wow great demo that Jazzmaster , toaster and Jaguar really need a mid boost pedal
Thus the Klon(e)! Exactly what I use it for.
It's all a matter of taste. I very much prefer the mids in a jazzmaster pickup to most everything else out there. Those gold foils though, yes please.
i thinking jazzmaster with filtertrons in it would be midtastic
The Mini Humbuckers sounded so good.
I own 5 guitars with mini's now I know why
One of the best pick up designs of all time. If I lose or get rid of my Firebird I'm immediately getting another mini-humbucker equipped guitar. Very underrated pickup.
Yes Les Paul Deluxes sound great IMO
I'm not sure of that particular gretsch model's wiring, but it appears that the mud switch is engaged. The middle position keeps it out of the circuit.
First song?
Impressive demo! The minis are pure joy! Is here anyone who knows how they differ from Gibson Firebird's mini hb? Since I play a 2005 firebird V (stock pickups), I was wondering if there's any difference or not with those LP's minis...
6:38 "Dirty Neck Lipstick" is the sound of the White Stripes and should be the title of their next album.
I mean Jack did use SIlvertone amps
I’d love to see one of these for bass too, it’s so well made sounds great
I love p90's and wide ranges. The big surprise for me were the min hb's.
This one of the most useful videos I've ever seen posted to UA-cam.
Did the jazzmaster have some kind of phase issue? Sounding a bit weak for me.
This was so incredibly cool. I hope you guys do more shootouts like this. It's SO well done and informative. You had the best possible examples for each pickup style. The licks were short and tasteful and any variables were eliminated. Man, this was so great. Bravo Reverb!!!

This, but with Charlie Christian pickups as well would be cool (even if it's the Lollar ones :P)
The Strat, Tele, Les Paul (PAFs) and Deluxe (minis ) sound the best along with the Thinline Tele ( Wide Range) IMO.
We’re in sync my fren
Modern HB sounds the worst of the lot in every test.
Too hot, yet underwhelming and dare I say _boring_
I never liked the tone of the PRS guitars.. it all felt.. lifeless to me, I Think their newer pickups are a bit more vintage sounding though.
They sound sterile, but the funny thing is that's actually what a lot of people in the pop industry want.
I'd say that these amp settings are definitely not for the modern HB, they can sound very cool, just not with Bassman and not on these settings.
Indeed.
Personally I thought the modern humbucker sounded great, I love that sound
jazzmaster pickups sound amazing
Surprised at those lipstick pickups, they sound great for everything but a dirty bridge sound. A lipstick in the neck and P90 bridge would be an interesting combo.
I liked the sound of the 6.7k Jaguar, Supro 8.5k ohm Gold-foil, and 8.1k P-90 (Gibson Custom shop model). Not sure why, though! :)
Phenomenal use of the UA-cam platform, not just for guitar pickups, but in general. Fortunately I also happen to love guitars 😁
on clean it's the P90's for me & on dirty that sweet all-time classic Tele. Decent sound on every mode also that Gretsch. Jaguar may be the worst overall even tho i love their design.
Tele, goldfoil, tron, toasters and mini hums are
Neck clean- Tele, strat, gold foil
Neck dirty- Tele, strat, p90, gold foil
Bridge clean- gold foil, p90, mini hb
Bridge dirty- Tele, gold foil, p90, paf
All around- p90, Tele, gold foil
Great playing! I liked all of the example riffs. All of the pickups sounded pretty good to me. Am I correct that the P90's had more punch, but got a little fuzzy when driven? Awesome video.
Thanks for this..saved and shared. Very well done
now i see why so many indie guitarists play offsets.
No doubt, one of the best shootings videos ever
The real star of the show is that Silvertone. That thing sounds amazing.
shadowseal22 Sorry I thought it was the weakest.
The lipstick sounded like shit
damn that p90 sounds gooooood
Hi 1st of all thank you so much for this excellent video Very very precious
Is it me or the differences are not that great from one model to the other ? and a EQ could reduce them even further ?
Thanks again and kind regards, gino
more of these please!
(timestamp for my research)
P90: 1:29 - 4:16 - 7:24 - 10:06
Filtertron: 2:04 - 4:54 - 8:13 - 10:33
that spur sound fantastic
Nothing will ever beat a strat neck pickup, sounds woody, fat and twangy, perfect. Sounds even better overdriven
Give me those P90s any day!
For me:
1. Tele
2. P90's
3. Jaguar
4. Strat
5. Mini HB
6. Didn't care for most of the others but I'm sure they have their place.
7. Dead last: wide range HB's. Can't stand them. Way too harsh.
great vid, p90's rule
Start, Troy was cool, PAF maybe 2nd to Strat.
Love the lipstick and toaster picups, esp. in the bridge. So mellow!
Toasters sound really good especially bridge dirt
Simply brilliant! Thank you. Interested in changing out some pickups and this was so helpful!
Most valuable video on UA-cam?
Great video! Can you please do Lace Sensors, Charlie Christian pickup and active EMGs next time?
I was surprised by the brightness of the Jazzmaster. I figured it'd be warmer, but it has a lot of highs and lows.
I would love to know the chords played for the clean neck pickup demo, beautiful.
Paf in the bridge, mini humbucker in the neck. at least for a Les paul type guitar
Based on the clean comparisons, I would rate them (1) Gold Foil, (2) Mini Humbucker, (3) Modern Humbucker.
Best pickup comparison I've ever seen. Anywhere. Thanks
Hmmmm... can't decide. Please send one of each and I'll get back to you in a year or ten.
You can really here the difference in noise as well
Personally I liked them all but the filtertrons and lipsticks were my least favorite. Maybe they need a little more dialing in and that could just be bc they are more niche sounds. I like the single coil comparisons bc it basically shows fender’s single coil range from thickest to thinnest. And i was really really impressed by the versatility of the fender thinline HBs
Give that special with p90s oh yeah!
