      You're very welcome Tony. Good to hear from you, the rough stuff's not for everyone but it is memorable. See you at MCCB before too long.. Dave

    Splendid trip Dave! You defo blessed by a quartering sea on the way there and a broad reach most of the way back! Outstanding!

      I think you'd have enjoyed the Royal Pavilion. It was quite overwhelming when I first went inside.

    Hi Dave, thanks for posting. Reminds me of a trip we made to Brighton on a Westerly Merlin, similar conditions but we were advised by the Marina not to attempt to come in and carry on to Newhaven. Unbelievably the weather the next day was flat calm and sunny, we had to motor all the way. 😁

      Thanks for watching Lucy. It does sound similar. It is surprising how the sea heaps up along that bit of coast and gets very confused as you approach the entrance to the Marina. I reckon we were going up and down 8 feet as we went past the outer entrance. Fortunately it was high water so plenty of depth. The marina entrance is a bit shallow so you do have to think about bumping the bottom. It was a bit wild even in the marina, I was surprised by the strength of the wind actually in the harbour. Berthing wasn't very neat, but we got there OK. As you commented, the following day was a completely different world of peace and tranquillity. BTW, I've never seen a magic mirror before, looks like fun :-) .. Dave

      I guess it's character forming :-) More enjoyable afterwards than at the time. I never felt unsafe though.

    Nice deck! Looked like you were getting some water dripping down in the first clip. Your boat flies along, we rarely if ever see 8k boat speed. Mind you it was a heck of a blow that day. One of our rules is to stay home if the kite surfers think it’s a good one. Sorry you felt queasy, that rolling quartering sea is the one that gets me as well. Did the plotter recover? Mine sometimes sulks if it gets damp and then cheers up as it dries out. Great video as usual.

      Hi Stuart, I hadn't tightened the hatch down, hence the drips :-(
      I would normally say that Zephyr IV was a bit slow but she just loves a blow, especially on the beam. The forecast was 22 - 25 Knots but it got way way over that as we approached Brighton. Once I'd puked in the bucket, I was fine, certainly not incapacitated, which is my major fear. Chart plotter was dead before we left. I've bought another now, they are quite cheap S/H on Ebay :-) See you soon... Dave

    Zephyr is a fast boat, I have also noted that in your previous videos. Unfortunately its a make of yacht not seen here in Australia, I think I would have one if they were. Best

    • @davesailing
      @davesailing  Рік тому +1

      To be fair she's a bit under canvassed, which has it's benefits. She goes well in strong winds and you don't have to reef early but she's not so fast in light airs.
      She's going well at the moment with her freshly anti fouled bottom . I'm surprised you've not seen any Westerly's in Australia, they have been sailed all over the world. Lovely to hear from you again .. Dave

      Ive searched the online boat sales site down under but alas no Westerly’s. The other UK boats I like are the Rivals and Contessa yachts, also very rare here. Possibly these UK boats were in major production at a time the AU boating building market was expanding significantly with a wide range of similar craft and cheaper than imports, only a hypothetical of course. Best

    Hi first of your videos I have seen very interesting as last I sailed my Westerly Corsair around the UK anti-clockwise and I sailed from Cows to Brighten in very similar conditions. Which Westerly is yours it is not immediately obvious to me, very unlike my centre cockpit Corsair. Great video thank

      Hi Mike, Zephyr IV is an Ocean Quest, built in 1993. The first of the aft cockpit version. I don't think there were many made. Thanks for watching, there's quite a few more videos for you on the channel, I hope you enjoy those too. Best wishes... Dave

    Great video. What was the forecast to Brighton? SW i presume :-)

    • @davesailing
      @davesailing  4 місяці тому

      From memory the forecast it was 20 - 22knots sw ish. By the time we got to Brighton it was consistently over 30 knots and speed through the water touching 7 knots. A bit rolly but we never got any water on deck. I don't think I'd have been very happy going back against it. I'm sure the boat would do it but .... Cheers Dave

    • @davesailing
      @davesailing  4 місяці тому

      @@churchofthegreenflipflop2436 I hope it goes well. The sea heaps up around there very quickly with an onshore wind but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. It was my first time. Just watch out for the shallow entrance, though I noticed they had a dredger in operation when we were there, so maybe not such a problem. Where do you sail from ? Best Wishes Dave

      I think the top was in the cloud :-). I don't know what the wind speed limit is, it was very stable when we went up.
