  • The Plane of Mirrodin is like no other in the multiverse. Once the creations of Karn it became the experimental grounds for Memnarch and then the home of the Phyrexians. We can learn a lot about a Plane and the color pie by studying it with the color pie as our lens. Every Plane of mtg is different and yet the color pie is the one constant which we can use to frame our discussions around. We may never see a Plane like Mirrodin again in magic the gathering but perhaps we can learn lessons from it, for perhaps we will one day return. Color philosophy is truly a wonder so join my in using mtg colors to learn about this beloved plane.

Mirrodin is easily my favorite of the MTG planes and its story being corrupted into New Phyrexia. I hope one day we get something that brings Mirrodin back, especially with the Phyrexians reeling after March of the Machine

I really liked this exploration of Mirrodin.
Blue being almost native feels very appropriate. But red was the most unexpecting use of it's color philosophy in this plane, despite it being very true to red.
There's only one thing I feel missing from this video and that is the look at the trolls in green. The trolls are the only ones , that remember the old worlds they came from. They hang on to the old ways they came from to this world and see the twisted nature of Mirrodin. While others have excepted the plane as it is, the Trolls don't. They praise the land, but know it's twisted and unatural, but they have to make due, while at the same time try to prevent it from further going down the path. They tried to prevent Glissa from going to look for the the fifth sun since they knew nothing good can come of this.

Mirrodin (along with Ravnica and Alara) was one of the last truely unique worlds made for Magic, before Wizards just started making all the planes based off of real world mythologies or aspects already made by other series. Everything made around the plane is just so original and fresh.

Ikoria I’d say is pretty unique, it had an obvious kaiju inspiration but it used that inspiration as a jumping-off point for a world full of interesting environments and the monsters that inhabit them. I only wish they went into more detail about the human civilizations, it was 90% Drannith, the balloon city and a few independent bonders

    • @MRDLT00
      @MRDLT00 2 роки тому

      Is that the case?
Honestly I hadn't heard much about the place considering it only got one set and the promotion hyper focused on the kaiju. Gave off the impression that there wasn't much else to it sadly. :/

    • @lucidlullaby894

@@MRDLT00 yeah, the modern “1-2 sets per plane” thing has made introducing new planes more difficult.
Kaijus are a huge inspiration, but other than Kogla there’s no one-to-one references (that I can remember), the plane just has giant monsters periodically attacking cities. The plane’s specialty is its biodiversity, each of the five triomes are wildly different environments with its own collection of unique creatures of all sizes.
The story focuses on the broken balance of man and nature, and how Drannith’s fear of monsters and the Ozolith driving monsters mad is preventing peace.

      Why disappointed?
I see it as a full circle now. The Phyrexian heart core of Karn seeded this design long ago and now it's just blossoming into fruition.

At the time of the OG block, I don't think it was known that Phyrexian oil was tainting the world. If it was mentioned, it was in a minor way that was easily glossed over. Finding out it was there in the newer block came off as retconny.
Also was pissed Wizards killed Slobad off screen right after their happy ending and turned Glissa into evil edge lord. Felt like utter disrespect of these characters. 😒

Reminds me, in Mirrodin's fall to become New Phyrexia, whatever happened to that old artifact, the Mirari? Last thing the wiki says happened to it was Karn reclaiming it from Memnarch and then giving it to Glissa, Slobad, and Geth, and we all know by now what happened to them, but not the artifact.

Personally, I have a theory that the Black Sun of Mirrodin is so hostile because Karn, the creator of Mirrodin, sees Black Mana as something inherently evil due to his interactions with Yawgmoth's Legacy. Karn could never see Black as a force of personal liberation because he never developed in that manner. His concerns were always intrigue, studiousness, and peace. This doesn't mesh well with Black, save for the desire to know (as knowledge is personal power). If you really look at some of this old art too, the Black Sun appears to be a 'controlled' essence of what Karn witnessed during the Phyrexian Invasion; a haunted nightmare that represents how he sees Black Mana as a whole.

The first mirrodin hobestly was unique and had great designs, but too bad from a gameplay perspective the set was really bad. Not bad as the cards were bad. It was the opposite. Standard was miserable to play the entire time it was in rotation and the reason the game was falling out of favor during kamigawa. People were just getting tired of the BS this block brought. Myself included.
