This is one of my top 5 stories from Mtg; I'd rank it 2nd fav. I remember when I read this for the first time. Oh my gosh. Blades of metal grass, quicksilver oceans... who could come up with something like this? In all my wildest dreams as a young teenager I could not imagine. I was blown away and to this day I'm still amazed. The entire block for me was special; amazing book and overall story.

Mirrodin was special to me because it was the first and only time I went to a FNM (or any MtG official event for that matter): I entered innocently without even knowing what new cards were printed, and 5 minutes later an artifact affinity steamrolled me to the ground by turn 4 while I was still building up my strategy.

Even though Mirrodin seems to be regarded as an awful era of MTG competitively (and if you play against Affinity, you'll see why), it's still one of my favorite sets.

Does affinity make playing cards generate colourless mana if their cost would go negative? If it doesnt, it should. The wording implies it.

No, mechanically the lowest you can go is 0 mana

It was the first expansion with a focus on artifacts but also made artifacts so ugly. Never got warm with that

Technically Antiquities was the first expansion to focus on artifacts but Mirrodin definitely gave them a power boost.

Why ban cards if everyone can profit from them.

Actually I quit MTG right before Mirrodin. And only returned during war of the spark.

Mirrodin was easily the worst block i got to play through. The block was just miserable to play through. Too many cards were just way too powerful, and so many decks started to feel similar with no great ways to hate on all the artifacts. Kamigawa may have been blamed for the loss of players to the game but it was because of this block honestly. People were just getting fed up with the block. I heard so many complaints back then that people didnt want to play standard (type 2) at our store anymore. The story of the set was good though lol.
