  • Journey to Chankillo in Peru
Travel to the astounding ancient observatory of Chankillo and its thirteen towers, which once allowed its inhabitants to determine the date to within an accuracy of two or three days. A UNESCO World Heritage site, built over 2,300 years ago in the coastal desert of Peru, Chankillo is truly a wonder. Under the guidance of WMF Peru Vice President Martha Zegarra and Chankillo Program Director Dr. Iván Ghezzi, learn what Chankillo can tell us about life in ancient South America and learn about the challenges the site faces today.

Thank you. The truth is that nobody in the world today has the slightest idea of what Chankillo really is. People just cant bear to admit that. Well, maybe some very rare peolple do know, but they dont talk because they are wise . Chankillo is one of the most mysterious and amazing places in the world and it is NOT an astronomic or solar obseratory, or a temple or a castle. It belongs to a culture and knoledge based in a reality and life that is completly lost to us today.

Just curious - I notice that observatory humps form a different curve than that of the outcrop ..... There must be a reason for this as it would take more work to build all those higher humps?

Just curious 1 - does anyone know why the observatory markers had stairs and flat tops

Maybe because without stairs we can not see the sun ?This can be everything except an astronomic observatory, That is just the label the 21 century man gives to any building or stucture that somehow are aligned with some celestial event. Everything that is said about Chankillo is absolutly false. Nobody really knows what it is but all the scolars are always full of certainties, isnt it ? To understand these things our minds should transform into a mind of a man of 3000 bC. A particular man, in a particular place and culture .
