  • In this clip from Wonders of the Universe Brian Cox visits The Thirteen Towers solar observatory of Chankillo in Peru. The 2,500-year-old solar calendar was built by a civilization of which very little is known. Click here for more news.bbc.co.uk/...
Having explored the wonders of the solar system, Professor Brian Cox steps boldly on to an even bigger stage - the universe. Who are we? Where do we come from? For thousands of years humanity has turned to religion and myth for answers to these enduring questions. But in this series, Brian presents a different set of answers - answers provided by science.

Wow Peru always surprise me with his history 🙌🏻 a few days ago Chankillo was declared by the Unesco as human patrimony, is 2,300 years old and is the oldest astronomic observatory in the world 🤗 Peru here I go 🇵🇪 🤘🏻

I'm so proud to be a Peruvian, what was built in the past to teach it continues to teach today's.

That is just simply outstanding. Ancient History will never fail to amaze me. Full of genius, not only the “higher class” people, but even the ‘peasants’ were genius. Such an incredible time

It's just amazing that all those years ago with out our technology or intellect that we have now, how they and other ancient civilizations were able to make these wonderful structures.

Well it is a form of ancient puruvian calender technology that is totally alien to Europeans but still beautiful nevertheless.

Not really, I am Latvian and before old Baltic tribes were baptized, we used to have solar calendar. Lunar calendar was for vegetables and animals/ agriculture (when grow corps, etc) but sun calendar for people, as we are not animals or vegs : D

The old Baltic calendars were more advanced and more beautiful in my opinion. Calendars as we know today are European, it us unclear if the civilization in Peru had the same interpretation.

***** I am using both calendars- Georgian and old 9 day's week Sun calendar and I can see more and more people in Latvia are looking to have both of them. I am self employed and I found that my lifestyle fits perfectly into 9 days cycle- its means 3 days hard job, then one day easy break day, then 3 days hard job again and then two days off. Rest of 5/6 days are split on winter/ summer solstices as extra celebration days outside 9 day's week.

Darren Hatfield I think we have been deceived into believing that we have the most advanced generation, where in fact, there is increasing evidence all over the world that
      there were more advanced civilizations.

A person becomes more aware of this sort of thing if they have the time to notice. Since I've become disabled I greet the dawn at home I've noticed how where the sun hits the wall in my living room marches across the wall as the seasons change. It's pretty cool really. It lands directly on my altar around the 15th of November and the first of February. It makes it very easy for me to understand how all these different ancient people would notice and make solar calendars. If I lived somewhere with a more unobstructed view to the east, I would make one myself.

SUPER find! Imagining whomever first recognized it, standing there. Since im a kid I've tracked the sun on both horizons and oriented my position by the non wanderer, Polaris. 10 days ago here, i shared pics of a 4:30 crack of dawn and 6:00 sunrise
Thats June 22 in north east United States + I'll keep tracking it til ???

Brilliant concept 1000s of years old.
This blows the flat earth theory out the water. A rotating sun above us would not give us this observation of the sub.
Very clever as they worked out the rise of the sun from summer solstice and observed the sun rise moving back to the winter solstice then back again must have divided the distance to give the tower position.

Just impressive and beautiful. Also in Cuzco there is another structure from the Incas times which helps determine what to plant, according to what part of the structure the sun comes through, on a specific date. I think the structure represented a condor.

They may have also used some kind of hight sticks and marks on the ground to make a sun dial as well for telling the time of day :-)

Is this another example of the ancient calendar system with 13 months.. 28 days each month? Always so fascinating to see how the ancient people of earth kept count of time and placements of our solar system :) according to the stars.

In the book of Enoch, the Angel Urial decribes to Enoch the 12 gates of heaven and the way the sun rises in the different gates according to the seasons.

Thank you. That point of observation must be an important structure isnt it? Where is it? So if I want to observe the movements of the sun I must build 13 big towers with tow stairscases, one on each side of each tower, otherwise how can I track the sun, isnt it?

Yes, that's right, coal etc. are compressed biomass and the fire is decompressed. The same thing happens in our Earth's core only with the cosmos. So there is no gravity or gravitation. So you have a compremirundg in decompression.

If the was the case, it would be on the same tower. He was able to predict the exact area where the sun was going to rise, between 5th and 6th tower. There are other documentals on these if you are interested.
