Looks like I'm going to my storage unit and drag out my lift table and find a project bike for this winter. When my Honey asks if I'm building another bike in the garage I'll just say, "Its' Mike's fault"...lol
I own 2 or 3 of those oil tank trays, and every last one of them has that bashed in dent on the bottom. Never knew it was a Factory thing! I learned some thing!! Thanks Mike!

We found them! (Only kidding) A large (as you can get it) washer on the top of the tank’s front “tabs” will reduce the chance of the tab cracking where it meets the tank. Besides the order, you’re also giving us a pretty good idea what the rear of the motorcycle will look like at final assembly.

To think there was an oversight in engineering and instead of redesigning the part, someone had the task of beating everyone to fit, too cool. Mike, I was day dreaming of having another Flathead, I had a 1940 80" or a Pan. So I was mentally putting it together and I was going to use a stock bobbed fender like you just did.... Great minds think alike.........

Hey Mike, I hit "like'! This project is getting exciting! Once you get that VL springer mocked up and in the frame, things will really start to take shape. That sturdy springer suits the big flathead '80! Back in the 70's, I had an unmolested 1930 VL springer. Unfortunately, I had to let it and a lot of other great parts go in order to raise a down payment for a house. Still have the front fender though.Take care.
I sold an RL front end and an Indian Enfield front fender for grocery money. I get it. Later on, I got this stuff. I'm officially happy. You take care too.
i love learning that many years ago some guy designed this battery tray , HD made it , and another guy working on the assembly line figured out how to make it fit and work with the other parts . and then he never told anyone in management (or maybe they didn't listen !) , and nobody ever redesigned that part . so not only did HD continue making that part that needed to be modified on the line , reproduction companies made it the same way !

I'm running the aftermarket tubed vent. I plugged the stock one and mounted the other in the shifter top screw through hole that's right behind the original. I don't recall where I got it. Also (and I can't recall why) I have refrigeration compressor vibration isolators between the battery tray and frame mounts. The lower stud screws in and the rubber fits right up inside the rolled over portion of the tray.
Finally remembering, those tubes with that right angle vent came from Custom Chrome. The isolators on your batery tray sound interesting and ought to work well, but don't they take up too much space?
@@pacificmike9501 No. It IS tight between the top of the oil bag and frame rail, but they don't touch. There's a 1/4" maybe. Again, I don't really recall why I did it. I keep thinking I wanted to shim it up, but that doesn't make a lot of sense. It's been years ago I put it together (shrug).
Coming on well there Mike and great little history snippets. You should let Mike the camera man be in shot and assist you and even ask a question or two if he spots something from time to time, I think it would be nice to see and add to your vlogs. Keep up the great work there 👍🏽

Always a pleasure watching your progress here. Now, I'm a firm believer in the philosophy that motorcycles and cars have personalities all their own. My father had a '59 Pontiac we called "The Beast" because it sounded like one and made us think it was certainly possessed at times. I've nicknamed my bikes on similar fashion. Likewise, I've heard you talk about "Baby Doll" a few times. I'm just curious as to whether you have a nickname chosen for the flatty and your ultimate vision for it, or do you wait for completion of the project and wait for it to "speak" to you as it's coming to life. I hope this wasn't too lengthy. Great video. Catch you next time!
Good question. My vehicles tend to name themselves. "Babydoll" is one of the sweetest machines I've ever owned. I have names for machines that I can't even tell you. But then, they've been places we can't talk about.

I like fender washers too. Use them at work #8x3/4. Could never figure out why they call em fender washers. OH cause you use em to hold up fenders! LOL Hope you get front end.
Good morning Mike, mildly off topic but I can't think of better words of wisdom for this ? I'm building a early hot rod pan, 103", and I want to keep with tradition yet beef up all aspects of the build. Any experience with the Dual Cam Backing Plate for the front end, 36-48 forks. It's sold by JP Cycles, part #241-697. No juice brakes on this build, and I want to do something special for the customer. Thank you Mike, your advice on this will be truly appreciated and respected. SARGE.
BIG Panhead. I've thought about those brakes so much and never tried one. They've been around for quite a while and have been carried by several suppliers. It's got to be a good idea. The most important thing with drum brakes (you probably already know this, but they're good thoughts anyway) is the contact area of the shoes on the drum surface is correct as possible, maximizing stopping power. The other one is the routing and stabilization of the cable. Look at a stock Harley springer and notice the attachment points of the cable sleave from the brake all the way up to the lever. It attaches onto the lower fork tree and then, on to the handlebar. Those stabilization points make a big difference. Let us know how you like it.
Thank you Mike ! Yes, I finally found a home for the 5" flywheels I had in the shop for 15 years. You're absolutely correct regarding the contact of the shoes and drum I.D. I learned about with my first Model A build, it meant the difference between stopping and slowing down and tossing out the anchor. Mike, working on bike and have to take rear mag tire/rim off the bike. Little nervous first time doing this. Nervous but I have the manual which is key. I remember you said always have manual. I guess just nervous. Lol
I get it. The biggest thing is making sure the bike is secure and cannot fall. The next thing is to be careful that the weight is off of the wheel when removing it. Nervous is okay, just take it slow and think over each step.
On your transmission, your using a bolt for the kicker side support. Any particular reason why? Could you use a 5th stud? Seems like it might be easier. Love the videos. You are a wonderful teacher.
Thank You. I do it just like the factory intended. The 5th bolt screws into a cast-in insert in the case. When installing a transmission, as I stated, it is designed to be installed with the mounting plate. Once the trans and plate are installed, it is quite easy to install the bolt from the bottom.
Hi Mike, I'm really enjoying your Flathead 80 project. Can't wait to see you install the old VL springer.....when it gets back from the shop. I notice you've left the rear stand catch on the bobbed fender. I apologize if you've already been asked this question, but are you planning to have a rear stand on this bike?

Thank You. Some of the hardware is just misc. chrome nuts, bolts, and washers I buy at the local hardware store. Living in Southern California, the hardware stores carry this stuff because of all the car and bike freaks. The special stuff is all Colony brand kits, which are carried by all of the major aftermarket Harley Davidson parts suppliers. You can also buy chrome hardware from the aftermarket guys, usually in bags of 10 each of whatever you need.
hi mike, one point the last video, it is called an inclinometer question what are you going to run on this bike 6 volt or 12 volt system. Keep up the good work cheers
Thank You. I didn't want to redo the video. I had to laugh at myself. How many people are lucky enough to have "kind" critics?' The bike will have a magneto for ignition and a 12volt system for lighting and a voltage drop for the horn. Too much stuff.
I'm trying to figure out why you want to put fender washers you mentioned for the fender brackets. It looked to me like there was already a plate welded o the inside for those bracket bolt. It also seems to me that fender washer will fall on the side curves and my bend the fender there if you tighten it up tight.

Mike, I tried mocking up the rear fender on my 52 PAN build and not sure about the fit on the U clamps. I have two sets supposedly same part number but have differing heights. The shorter height ones would need washers in between the clamps and fender or they would cause a deep crease in the fender. The taller ones would leave a small gap in between the fender and and cross bar so really don't make a tight fit. which ones would be correct?
The only really "correct" ones are originals. We all generally use reproductions and have to modify them a little. Each situation is a little different. These are the things facing all of us. Sometimes you just have to get real "creative."

It"s just a breather hose from the transmission. The original breather was open to the atmosphere. With this one,the hose is pointed down so that water does not get into the transmission.

Mike! Regarding your battery try, Could you weld a flat peace of steel plate to the bottom of the oil tank, thus doing away with the original battery try? I don't like the way Harley used a hammer, to adjust a badly fitted try. Bottom line is, the frame top tubes should have been 1/2 inch higher in the first place! If they had spent time doing a mock build, like you are doing, --- the problem would not have accrued in the first place. Anyway; I always did mock builds, on all my Triumphs in the 1970/80's. Like yourself, I had to find ways to improve the whole ride. Still love proper USA/British Iron, because of the good metal used. Looking forward to your next video and nice to hear some common sense bike building.

For if one stacketh within the wrong order, & thy fasteners now fall a tad short, don't force them to reach, nor swing like a monkey, re-fit in the manner you ought. Odd stresses are bad news for brackets, & they don't like to carry 'squint' load, but if your clampage doth crack them don't worry, as you'll soon find them out on the road.' - Mike, there is now a teabag in England with your name on it. (Sorry, we drank 'A.M.' this morning.) Good coffee? Very little here since the Romans left - (Italian roast, good stuff, helped them build their roads straight : )
Maybe you've probably already covered this but how much horsepower and torque are you looking to get from your motor on this bike Mike? Are you changing any of the gearing to get more speed or torque? Less sprocket teeth on the wheel?
That's way better than Meccano or Lego. You had me fooled for a few minutes, why were you putting an oil tank on a battery tray? Shows how much I know about Harleys. Lack of joined-up thinking in the design dept isn't exclusive to HD though. In the Zeppelin factory museum in Friedrichshaven in Germany you can see the development of the Mercedes engines they used to power the blimps. Quite clearly the inlet and exhaust manifold designers didn't talk with the cylinder head designers. The cylinder heads had four valves per cylinder yet the intake and exhaust gases had to travel along narrow tubes through many 90 degree angles. No one thought of the air mass squeezing around corners through narrow tubes, but the cylinder head designers knew what should be done. Clearly they didn't tell the manifold department.

Yes, it's a battered original. The holes were made oversize at the factory to adjust alignment.

I love the look of a rigid frame. Last time I rode one was in the early 70s when I rode my roommates rigid Triumph. It hurt my back back then, I can’t imagine what it would feel like now.😕

I like fender washers too. Use them at work #8x3/4. Could never figure out why they call em fender washers. OH cause you use em to hold up fenders! LOL Hope you get front end.

Good morning Mike, mildly off topic but I can't think of better words of wisdom for this ? I'm building a early hot rod pan, 103", and I want to keep with tradition yet beef up all aspects of the build. Any experience with the Dual Cam Backing Plate for the front end, 36-48 forks. It's sold by JP Cycles, part #241-697.
No juice brakes on this build, and I want to do something special for the customer. Thank you Mike, your advice on this will be truly appreciated and respected. SARGE.
BIG Panhead. I've thought about those brakes so much and never tried one. They've been around for quite a while and have been carried by several suppliers. It's got to be a good idea. The most important thing with drum brakes (you probably already know this, but they're good thoughts anyway) is the contact area of the shoes on the drum surface is correct as possible, maximizing stopping power. The other one is the routing and stabilization of the cable. Look at a stock Harley springer and notice the attachment points of the cable sleave from the brake all the way up to the lever. It attaches onto the lower fork tree and then, on to the handlebar. Those stabilization points make a big difference. Let us know how you like it.

Yes, I finally found a home for the 5" flywheels I had in the shop for 15 years. You're absolutely correct regarding the contact of the shoes and drum I.D. I learned about with my first Model A build, it meant the difference between stopping and slowing down and tossing out the anchor. Mike, working on bike and have to take rear mag tire/rim off the bike. Little nervous first time doing this. Nervous but I have the manual which is key. I remember you said always have manual. I guess just nervous. Lol
I get it. The biggest thing is making sure the bike is secure and cannot fall. The next thing is to be careful that the weight is off of the wheel when removing it. Nervous is okay, just take it slow and think over each step.

On your transmission, your using a bolt for the kicker side support. Any particular reason why? Could you use a 5th stud? Seems like it might be easier.

Thank You. I do it just like the factory intended. The 5th bolt screws into a cast-in insert in the case. When installing a transmission, as I stated, it is designed to be installed with the mounting plate. Once the trans and plate are installed, it is quite easy to install the bolt from the bottom.
Hi Mike, I'm really enjoying your Flathead 80 project. Can't wait to see you install the old VL springer.....when it gets back from the shop. I notice you've left the rear stand catch on the bobbed fender. I apologize if you've already been asked this question, but are you planning to have a rear stand on this bike?
It's so easy to do that I'll look at it both ways. They are a great convenience.

Thank You. Some of the hardware is just misc. chrome nuts, bolts, and washers I buy at the local hardware store. Living in Southern California, the hardware stores carry this stuff because of all the car and bike freaks. The special stuff is all Colony brand kits, which are carried by all of the major aftermarket Harley Davidson parts suppliers. You can also buy chrome hardware from the aftermarket guys, usually in bags of 10 each of whatever you need.

Thank You. I didn't want to redo the video. I had to laugh at myself. How many people are lucky enough to have "kind" critics?' The bike will have a magneto for ignition and a 12volt system for lighting and a voltage drop for the horn. Too much stuff.
I'm trying to figure out why you want to put fender washers you mentioned for the fender brackets. It looked to me like there was already a plate welded o the inside for those bracket bolt. It also seems to me that fender washer will fall on the side curves and my bend the fender there if you tighten it up tight.

Mike, I tried mocking up the rear fender on my 52 PAN build and not sure about the fit on the U clamps. I have two sets supposedly same part number but have differing heights. The shorter height ones would need washers in between the clamps and fender or they would cause a deep crease in the fender. The taller ones would leave a small gap in between the fender and and cross bar so really don't make a tight fit. which ones would be correct?
The only really "correct" ones are originals. We all generally use reproductions and have to modify them a little. Each situation is a little different. These are the things facing all of us. Sometimes you just have to get real "creative."
Mike, What Counter Sprocket ( tooth count ) are you running for today's roads with you 4 speed .
This one will be huge, 26. But Flatheads are all torque.

I did not completely understand,
is the overflow of the box the pipe that fits into the frame?
It"s just a breather hose from the transmission. The original breather was open to the atmosphere. With this one,the hose is pointed down so that water does not get into the transmission.

Mike! Regarding your battery try, Could you weld a flat peace of steel plate to the bottom of the oil tank, thus doing away with the original battery try?
I don't like the way Harley used a hammer, to adjust a badly fitted try. Bottom line is, the frame top tubes should have been 1/2 inch higher in the first place!
If they had spent time doing a mock build, like you are doing, --- the problem would not have accrued in the first place.
Anyway; I always did mock builds, on all my Triumphs in the 1970/80's.
Like yourself, I had to find ways to improve the whole ride. Still love proper USA/British Iron, because of the good metal used.

Maybe you've probably already covered this but how much horsepower and torque are you looking to get from your motor on this bike Mike? Are you changing any of the gearing to get more speed or torque? Less sprocket teeth on the wheel?
Massive torque and tall gearing will make it a great roadbike. The only numbers I care about are mph.

That's way better than Meccano or Lego. You had me fooled for a few minutes, why were you putting an oil tank on a battery tray? Shows how much I know about Harleys. Lack of joined-up thinking in the design dept isn't exclusive to HD though. In the Zeppelin factory museum in Friedrichshaven in Germany you can see the development of the Mercedes engines they used to power the blimps. Quite clearly the inlet and exhaust manifold designers didn't talk with the cylinder head designers. The cylinder heads had four valves per cylinder yet the intake and exhaust gases had to travel along narrow tubes through many 90 degree angles. No one thought of the air mass squeezing around corners through narrow tubes, but the cylinder head designers knew what should be done. Clearly they didn't tell the manifold department.
