Saw your videos and followed your directions. Noting the shifter position when reinstalling was challenging when putting the lower unit back on. But got it. Your videos were great and spot on. Thanks so much. Made this so much easier for my 50 hp 2003 Mercury 2 stroke water pump impeller change.
I have a 96 50hp mercury 2 stroke. I am about to embark on this repair I appreciate the work you do and even though it's not the same motor in sure a lot of the same principles apply. Thank you.
wisco appreciate it. I have another question. My tach boat gets up on plane for a few minutes then bogs down. You think it's fuel starvation? I'm checking the ignition this weekend to see if it's got a bad coil pack that is faulting out. The tach works intermittently.
could ck coil with ohm meter, , to me sounds like the 2cycle oil gummed up jet, maybe ! , coils work or they dont, there is a site i go to called marineEngine.com they have a forum you can look for same problem before asking aabout your problem i had two people answer me in less than 8 hours, watching these hack videos they always leave something out of the videos, this guy was the best video after watching ten videos. good luck dude
Was going to take the lower unit off and send it in for repair (remote island) but while watching your video around the 47 second mark, figured out that the shift rod does not move up and down on this one. It stays stationary no matter what position the shiftier is in unlike yours. That should tell me something, but I don't know what. Any ideas?.... Thanks.
Question? There is a small hole to the right of the vent plug on my 2001 2 stroke 50 hp. Is that hole supposed to have some sort of plug in it? I don’t remember water shooting out of there last Summer when I would run it on the muffs. This Summer I’ve developed an overheat alarm at low idle whether on muffs or in the water. Good tell tale and new t-stat also this year. Alarm stops at just above idle. I’ve also back flushed everything with a garden hose through the t-stat opening. Same problem.
i love your video ,i have a 2005 mercury outboard similar to that one , thanks for all your help , can you tell me if the water out the pee hole gets hot fast is that normal i put a new thermostat on it ,water still gets hot fast .
I just replaced my water pump kit ordered from this description. Seemed to match perfectly. . I have a 40hp tracker Mercury 2002/2003. Put everything back how it came off and re connected shift linkage but now my motor doesn’t find the neutral although throttle is in neutral. Previously anywhere in neutral I could start. Now I have to move the throttle super slow in the neutral gear back and forth in its play room while holding key turned and sometimes it starts and sometimes it’s just dead and never attempts to turn. It doesn’t attempt to crank at all till it finds a spot in the neutral while holding key turned to start. so it never cranks till finds a spot moving throttle back and forth in neutral, then it does sometimes and cranks and starts. Any ideas?
Hello - Quick question on the impeller housing bolts You use anti-seize...with galvanic corrosion concern’s, what type of anti-seize did you use? Why not thread locker?
I have the same motor and I took it to a shop and had it put in and it's has lil water coming out when sitting still but when I give it gas it pees more is that normal
Thanks for the video brother. Save my dad and me a lot of headache. Of course with my luck we pulled her all apart and foind out the guy at the marina gave us the wrong part. Seems to just be our luck. But thanks for the video anyways. It was done really well.
I have the same damn motor but that shift rod coupler is not there. I’ve looked and looked, but that sob isn’t there. I’ve done many many many impellers and I know where it’s supposed to be for the life of me it’s not there. I’ve even taken the whole mid cowling apart trying to find it but no dice.
@@heinrichcares7718what you have to do is undo the coupler under the engine at the engine. It’s a pain in the ass! It’s a little clip I think you push forward so that you can undo the shift rod. Once you see it then it will make sense. I had to take the lower part of the engine cowling off, access was from the starboard side. Good luck.
Awesome Job. You made this repair so easy for me. Thanks for the help. Step by step install instructions were a breeze Did the removal / replacement with my iPad sitting on the gunnel and I couldn't be happier Definitely will subscribe and follow
Finally a video without bs. Very easy to follow. Thank you
Thanks D Ray, the video helped me a lot in replacing my impeller and pump kit. Great job!

Really well done video, thank you. Your step by step process was easy to follow and the video was clear.
D-Ray, any tips for undoing a stuck bolt on the shift rod (at about 1:35). Mines stuck as all hell and I don't want to break it ....
I'm working on this job currently. Got the lower unit off but the shaft doesn't seem to want to rotate in either direction. Any advice?
