There’s a chance you might be farming the WRONG Hammerhead God Roll in Destiny 2. Hammerhead is a new machine gun added in the BRAVE weapon arsenal, farmable in Onslaught. I see a lot of people going for Target Lock & Fourth Times The Charm… but there may be better options out there for that. Another super important thing of note is that 4th times target lock retrofit's main strength isn't even in DPS, it's in its wildly high total damage (4th times on a rapid fire machine gun is a LOT of free bullets). It outclasses 4th times target lock Hammerhead in this regard too but I believe by an even wider margin than the DPS stuff
It's a weird case. If you're able to fire the whole Retrofit reserves continuously at a single target with Actium, it blows everything else out of the water in terms of total damage, but it takes 80-90 seconds to get there, and there isn't a single target in the game you can do that to--DPS phases end, smaller enemies die in a couple seconds, or you just start taking damage and have to leave (Well of Radiance lasts only thirty seconds). And of course the moment you stop firing the gun, Target Lock resets.
For the actual thing machine guns are meant for, add clear, I think 4TTC/KT or Recon/KT is ideal for Commemoration. I also happen to have a Rampage/Desperate Measures Hammerhead which is pretty fun, but overkill for most activities. I'd avoid Onslaught for total damage reasons.

Only 11.38% of Destiny 2 players have EVER completed any raid, according to Destiny Raid Report. That means only one in ten players have ever even stepped foot inside a Raid. Fewer still raid regularly because, honestly, who's got the time for that?
Raids take at most an hour once everyone's got it down. Maybe two if you're on a teaching run. That's not bad at all; social anxiety is a bigger culprit IMO
@@life-destiny1196 If you look over at Warmind Analytics there is no raid that - on average - takes under an hour. Maybe if you've got a full team of God roll elites, but they're the minority. For the rest of us that work 40 to 50 hours a week learning a raid with our casually-acquired weapons - and finding a full team that's willing to put up with us/them - is a time-consuming process, and the reason raids are the least-played content in D2.
For folks like me that means that Strikes and Crucible matches are the most common content with a (very) rare Dungeon thrown in. I've been into Last Wish and Deep Stone but never finished, personally.
To be fair, I'm okay with it. Raids are hardcore content for hardcore players, and making it more accessible removes that "special" feeling (and drops) those hardcore players get from the experience. Making raids more accessible hurt WoW and I think Bungie is right to avoid it.
Yeah social anxiety is the biggest issue with raiding.

I've been using a rampage/KT hammerhead in onslaught and it feels pretty amazing tbh. Not a tradtional spray and pray MG due to the lack of reload cheating, but you can stack the double damage perks super quick and then tap fire it for what feels like a pulse rifle with a 60 round mag and the damage per shot of a hand cannon.
That's the roll I wanna get (ideally on a shiny version)

One of my first few Hammerhead drops was a gold with rewind rounds/envious + desperate measures/killing tally. I’m good with farming until next week

Hammerhead with rewind rounds + killing tally goes hard. Commemoration with reconstruction is very good, but caps out at about 150 bullets or so and you have to wait for your ammo to refil or manually reload. With rewind rounds (especially enhanced) you can reach around 200+ total bullets and take less time reloading when your mag is empty.
Onslaught plus envious is by far the most fun machine gun in the whole game. I'm casual. Come at me bro

I think hammerhead is better for all around general use, retrofit in higher lvls feels like your throwing peas at the enemies but hammerheads lower fire rate and higher impact makes it more ammo efficient
Bruh, it's still poor man's commemoration. I'm not even going to focus farm hammerhead because it just doesn't offer the same level of convenience commemoration does, and I absolutely loved hammerhead way back during forges.

G-falcon + hammer head w/ destabilizing & onslaught is funny. Equipped Stylish executioner and you are firing faster and faster and strobing in and out of invis constantly re-procing volatile. It's almost like using a void thunderlord, but instead of lightning you get void booms. Also another fun fact... did you know destabilizing works on Empty void swords? Because I didn't know.
there is no reason to run destabilizing with gyrfalcon though. You already have free volatile, it's a wasted perk at that point
I think FTTC + Killing Tally should be amazing for DPS, realistically. Killing 3 adds grants a 30% buff for the whole magazine. Target Lock loses the buff if you miss or stop shooting, which isn't very effective in realistic situations where the boss is moving around and no one is using Div.
Isn't FTTC+Killing Tally the one you get from the Curated Quest roll? I mean, not bad for a guaranteed Shiny drop.

@@th9986 I won't argue about burst dps. I'm talking good overall damage with FFTC, great for boss with huge hp and not limited to dps window timing like high wave legend onslaught boss. Only lmgs can kill these bosses while other option just ran out of ammo while the boss still alive.
@@unholyarthur1 That high total is completely irrelevant as literally no boss in the entire game other than Onslaught gives you a window big enough, a good crit spot, and doesn’t move. They are trash, you’re never gonna achieve that total in any activity in the game. It’s not just burst DPS, it’s DPS in general. In every single encounter ever made in d2 you’ll never do more damage with an lmg. Even in onslaught, you’re better off this something else because they can only do that on wave 50. They are trash. They have never done good dps and they never will. You’re wasting your time.
Destabilizing rounds has been a god send because exactly this season wants to push solar and strand so hard it can be annoying to get volatile rounds to really cook. Personally I got a shiny destabilizing target lock role and it’s been doing great. Obviously not the most optimal but in onslaught and pantheon it’s been shredding ads where I need it then if say a tormentor or something rolls around target lock is kicking in right when I need it.

Don't even have to stow Commemoration for Reconstruction to proc. Just don't shoot for a few seconds and it reloads like 7 rounds every couple seconds. Killing Tally stays activated through all of this, if you don't shoot for a little while (i.e. between Onslaught rounds) you get to keep KTx3 and reconstruct your mag up to 130ish rounds.
I just got a shiny hammerhead with envious and rampage, and then killing tally and target lock. Pretty happy about it.
That rampage, onslaught is good for ad clear in onslaught the anything else imo
Desperate Measures also exists. Lacks the relative staying power of Killing Tally, but gets the same damage buff after 1 grenade or melee kill and 1 kill with the gun itself, or instantly if your grenade (or possibly Titan melee) gets more than one kill in a single usage; AND, assuming youre playing a void subclass, can net you Volatile Rounds in the process
Under-over is a good perk. Got a hammerhead with that and killing tally and did legend lightfall campaign. With killing tally x3 I did around 6000dmg per headshot. When under-over kicked in on overshields it did 27000dmg on headshot. Basic shields take more damage as well.
My main desire for rewind target lock on it is to have a retrofit that doesn’t require headshots basically. Sure I’m getting less damage, but it’s so much easier to use and you can still use target lock to its full potential on targets with small or nonexistent crits (like brigs or enemies with a breakable immune shield in onslaught)
If you get FTTC/envious and tally/TL, you can overfill with envious then swap to FTTC (you don’t lose the reserves) then blow your boss load or just use it for a bazillion add kills with tally (my pref).
Using Hammerhead afyer 4 years. Honestly I get if you like your commemoration, but imo hammerhead is the better option. Double damage perks and either get reload mw + reload mag like alloy or flared, and use reload options like dodge and you are golden. With 30%-71% boost in damage at all times, you wont need 150 shots in the mag. I am hopin to get a 8/5 roll with fluted barrel, alloy mag + extended mag, rampage + envious or rewind, and killing tally + target lock with a reload MW.
I'm still chasing a high-range Over-Under/Tap-The-Trigger for a PVP roll. No other 3rd-column perk really works in Crucible so why not save a bullet or two when you blast an overshield. And the base Stability on Hammerhead is 60, which means TTT puts you right at 100 while it's up.
destabilizing + KT and use the suppression grenade fragments to reload it and give your gun volatile rounds . Use nezarecs to get your nade back and you have the ultimate void adclear build that doesn't rely on seasonal artefacts.
Commemoration is by far my most used heavy too, & I'm having a hard time figuring out what a complementary Hammerhead would look like. Every roll I can think of does what Big C does already. I have some solid rolls that I guess I'll use if I ever get bored, but I think at this point I'll focus on getting an as close to perfect mountain top.
8:07 you've earned 100 GBP (good boy points) for correctly noting that the damage buffs are multiplicative instead of additive!
The best roll is rampage/killing tally because the significantly higher damage per shot means you are actually saving ammo, making it more ammo efficient than like rewind rounds or envious.
Envious Assassin + Killing Tally is absolutely nuts.

IMO rampage + killing tally is far and away the best roll. It's more ammo efficient than rampage + onslaught, unless you want surrounded instead. The double damage perk is what gives Hammerhead an edge. Otherwise, Commemoration is simply better for ad clearing (or even Corrective Measure) and Retrofit is better at target lock.
Is this damage test with normal FTTC and TL on Retrofit, or with enhanced? Because we'll be able to upgrade them later on the Brave weapons
correction: there's a difference between visual target lock stacks and ACTUAL damage stacks. visual stacks are achieved at the thresholds you mentioned, however the damage ramps up for every shot after the first 12.5% of the mag.
FTTC/Killing tally is what I use, it's easy to upkeep too

another great video, always love to see discussion about what rolls people like or prefer and why. I havent used hammerhead yet very much myself but I do actually really like retrofit escapade alot. For me personally, I would never be able to run retrofit without zen moment, i play on console and the recoil for that thing is just out of control otherwise, which makes fourth times the charm on that gun totally unfeasible for me, i suspect hammerhead accuracy wise will be a lot easier to land shots with enough to make a fourth times roll more feasible, especially with the high aim assist. One thing I think that might get overlooked a lot with high aim assist on console especially, is reticle friction. Iirc, reticle friction is exclusive to console, either way, reticle friction cancels out some of the reticle bounce of the weapon, preventing it from moving off target, which I predict will make it a lot easier to land shots with in general. As dumb as it may sound thank you for pointing out that fourth times the charm literally generates ammo, at first i was thinking, wait why wouild I ever use fourth times when I have rewind rounds which refills more ammo? And then you said that and I was like, "oh shit right free ammo lmao Im dumb". So fourth times is really good or potentially best first column if you really need ammo economy in certain encounters, like oryx dps.
For rolls in general, for hammerhead I'm surprised you didnt mention the target lock rewind rounds math and the target lock envious math. Target lock reachs max damage potential on 110% of the mag right? With rewind rounds it will refill 60% of your hits from reserves into the mag, so you get, in order, 60% of a mag, 36% of a mag, then 21.4% of a mag, assuming you land every shot, for a total of 216.4% magazine size, assuming you land every shot. Whereas envious can get you up to 300% magazine size without needing to even land a shot.
So if you use envious with a maxed out mag of 300%, the first mag is going to be somewhere between 15 and 40% damage boost, but everything after that, i.e. the next 190%, is all at 40%. Not sure if its total damage is higher but would be interested to see the math.
That said, for long periods of continuous high volume add clear (like in onslaught) I prefer the consistency of something like rewind rounds killing tally, because if Im constantly using my machine gun, envious wont really have time to fill up the magazine enough to make it superior to rewind rounds, and rewind rounds will always give me the same return on investment when im landing all my shots. For pure boss DPS envious assassin target lock would be better I think, and for general use with a bit of boss dps I might go for rewind rounds target lock. For add clear with groups of clustered adds I definitely think destabilizing rounds killing tally is gonna get overlooked, those volatile explosions deal a lot* of additional damage when you have adds clustered together
Love me so rewind/onslaught, it MOWS enemies. I know that there are no damage perks but dang, the ability to spray and just keep it going is great. I definitely would prefer rampage onslaught but haven't received one yet.
I have one with Envious Assassin and Killing Tally. It is quite nice and fun to see a mag with over 200 rounds in it.
Personally killing tally is a Personal favorite simply for the upkeep time due to war rig reloading for me. Keep it up until reload or switch.
Hammerhead is to LMGs the way that OG Spare Rations was to handcannons: even with absolutely shit rolls, they’re still good. That said, good rolls on them take them from A-(because again, they were good enough to be no worse than an A- with any roll) to top of the class S Tier.
Commemoration will always be my baby. Envious assassin is a must on hammerhead. The base mag just isn’t enough.

I mean, get Fourth Time Charm with Target Lock if you want, but Retro is just better reasons first its a 900 rpm unlike hammerhead were only 450 rpm i know damage different were tends to be lower damage the higher the rpm and more damage the lower the rpm also retro has enhanced traits so the perks will prock much easier and just better overall were hammerhead is using default traits not enhanced and also target lock kinda got nerfed bad so its not really in meta right now.
I’ve enjoyed Envious / Desperate Measures, with the Brave Orgin perk it’s actually pretty nuts.
An interesting you could technically get on a shiny variant is extended mag, 4th times and envious with some kind of damage perk probably either surrounded, target lock or killing tally. This vould give you freakishly big mag. Get envious to activate, pull out hammerhead, switch in your menu to 4 th times and bam big mag energy
considering they are fixing or "fixing" (however you want) that interaction on Edge transit its probable that they fix such interactions on a global level, like if you get one keep it till after the fix, but i probably wouldnt go out of my way to farm weapons for quickswap interactions

Corrective measure is void, you can get it in the easiest raid encounter in the game. Subsistence / one for all is cracked. 35% buff for free! Just cause you hit enemies. In onslaught I would empty my entire reserves and NEVER reload, not even once. At +35% dmg you kill so fast that you get more ammo than you can spend. No one talks about it, yet it is a monster. The scope is much better than on either commemoration or hammerhead as well. I have them all, but CM is simply the best to use in content with tons of enemies.

My question for this comparison is did you compare ENHANCED Target Lock and ENHANCED Fourth Times against the normal ones on the Hammerhead? Wouldn't that by definition skew the numbers?
I managed to get a Rampage/Killing Tally roll with Extended Mag to drop really early for me. Used it with my support Hunter build which gives out Radiant every 10 seconds, and sweet mercy, seeing such massive damage numbers from an LMG feels illegal.
Just for reference, stacking Radiant on top of Killing Tally and Rampage is roughly a 2.2x modifier for your damage. Chews through red bars, elites, and champs like they’re made of paper.

Honestly Rampage + Killing Tally Ad Clear machine might be better than Commemoration since you can melt higher health ads.
One thing about Bungie is that u should always keep every possible role so maybe 1 day it gets a huge buff or artifact mod that gives u lots of advantage so just keep what u can (if you can) consider 600 vault space after a million seasons of content is not enough

And I decided to just stick to Marcato, so op with strand artifact mods + demo/onslaught.
I am a gyrfalcon hunter main and I’ve been using chain of command as my void lmg and it’s not even void hammer head being easy to get makes feel something for the first time in years

This is what Bungie has been working towards all these years
Why is everyone talking about DPS on machine guns? It's bad, full stop. Bungie have said they want it to be worse DPS than other stuff because machine guns have high add clear potential, so it won't change in the future either. The total damage of machine guns is decent, but that doesn't matter in most contexts, and there are other options that do better total damage at higher DPS. A machine gun is an add clear weapon, going for single target DPS rolls on it is insane (even for retrofit).
Machine guns should be used for majors and minibosses too occasionally, so it's good to get damage perks on them that make it quicker to kill those, but you also shouldn't just be using the machine gun for majors and minibosses. I think any combination of rampage/4ttc/rewind and killing tally/onslaught are the rolls on this gun that lean into what you should actually be using a machine gun for. Target lock can help on those minibosses, but it probably won't become fully active, so Killing tally or onslaught are just straight up better choices.
This gun is absolutely incredible for the divinity runner on every team with the perk combinations I mentioned. And for everyone else, it's useful in certain scenarios where boss damage isn't a big concern, which happens more than most people think. Commemoration might be the better choice in certain situations, but I see this being a top tier choice of machine gun. I just also admit that I'm not going to be killing the witness with it.

Yeah I'm just sticking to my Envious + Onslaught. IIRC this is the 2nd ever MG with Envious (other being Circular Logic). I have one with Appended + Backup mag for a base 75 that I can get up to 225 in the mag.
Free ammo from things like FTTC or RR is nice and all but I'd rather just front load all or most of my ammo and never let go of the trigger. With Onslaught? It's a ton of fun. Is it the top meta pick? Probably not. But it's fun, it does its job, that's enough for me.

As a warlock main my hammerhead will be rampage/killing tally but I want to have a rampage onslaught for my titan actium war rig for funny reasons.

Lets face it. If you want a stupid good ad clear lmg (im only talking about void lmgs), commemoration is the way to go. (Reconstruct, killing tally)
If you re looking for dps lmgs, retrofit (4th times, target lock)
I farmed for a Hammerhead with rewind, targetlock. Simply for dps against tanky enemies like champions in gms. Why rewind ? It's more forgiving. But 4 times is also hella good.
Was farming tonight and got 2 destabilizing/killing tally’s. Plus I got an envious/surrounded & FTTC/killing tally. Guess I’m done with farming the hammer head.
Godroll for me is Feeding Frenzy/Onslaught.
Maximum bullet output, maximum reload speed, maximum more bullets.
Double damage perks are NEVER the move on guns, gotta have a utility/performance perk in there.
Black armoury guns are my favourite guns in that have every been in the game, I have a crafted retrofit but it’s been sat in the vault ever since I got my hammerhead, the sound to the look and feel of hammerhead, yeah it’s my favourite gun that’s ever been in the game, sorry retrofit
its funny that we are actually discussing this when both of these are genuinely god awful dps options when compared to so many other options
I got a FTTC and Target Lock roll. Definitely just gonna sit in my vault until we get volatile rounds again on the artifact. Until then I am after a Rewind+Killing Tally roll. But it probably wont replace Commemoration for me. I have 18k kills on Commemoration so I kinda like it. I also dont have that nostalgic side for hammerhead so... People need to try out Marcato-45. I have been in love with my demo+hatchling roll. This LMG has been slept on all season. Its not the best LMG by any means but on strand titan using grapple melees its S tier for the onslaught activity.

got a shiny god roll imo... it has envy / killing tally also it has onslaught and rewind rounds too as a 2nd perk option...
when comparing a base hammerhead to a base retrofit retrofit only wins in dps total damage goes to hammerhead also comparing a rapid fire frame to an adaptive is apples to oranges i think a better comparison would be avalanche from the dawning since its the same frame and shares rewind target lock perks

D2 player performing the most advance calculations just to find that their gun just does 1 percent more damage than other gun instead of touching grass. Bro I swear, y'all would do rocket science if it helps one phase a boss
Late to the party but i only got 1 hammerhead its envious assassin and target lock. Havintb over 100 rounds of 3X target lock is neat
i got a killing tally destabilizing round on my hammerhead its so good for add clear like REALLY good especially if your using void hunter
Personally, I dislike target lock because if my reticle leaves the enemy at all for one picosecond, target lock deactivates, and my damage boost is entirely gone, and I don't have an aiming ability good enough to keep my gun aimed at an enemy no matter where they move or wherever I move. I wish we at LEAST had the option to get FTTC in column three and triple tap in column 4, so we could at least have a machine gun that lets us fire for a stupidly, comedically long time.
Isn’t envious bad for MG’s? Most of the time you’re using the MG as a primary so you’ll never really get to proc envious

IMO, Hammerhead’s curated roll is already really strong
