  • There are several reasons for all of the rumors circulating around the most historic roller coaster at Six Flags Great America. Could it be closing for construction as soon as this year?

American Eagle was the 1st coaster I ever rode, and I cried going down the first hill while my grandmother was having the time of her life next to me. We still have the photo of it on a mug in my parent's kitchen.
Knowing the history and nostalgia invoked when this coaster is mentioned, I think a refurbishment or conversion would be a lot more popular than a complete replacement, although the racing steel coasters would be a good homage to the ride. Whatever happens to the ride in the future, I hope the park respects and commemorates one of it's most iconic rides.

I went to Press Day in 1981 (I was 11) before AE opened to the public. No headrests, no wings, no breaks, the Eagle was indescribable. I'm heartbroken every time I drive under the Eagle and see its current condition. I'd love to see a full dress RMC conversion however, an RMC re-tracking keeping the layout as-is and properly banking the helixes would bring back the glory days and capitalize on 40 years of memories. I don't see it going anywhere. Why would the park invest in restoring the station and a partial paint job? We can only hope. I love your channel, by the way, so re-watchable. I love the Great America history videos. Keep up the exceptional work!

I felt like people might make the argument that the raptors are more different than the ibox and topper tracks, but your point stands that Schilke is capable enough to design two coasters with different enough layouts to coexist in one park.

I also believe WWGLC and iron rattler demonstrate the difference between fast-paced multiple force driven RMC and airtime machine RMC (not that raptors don't give insane airtime, because they do), but I haven't been on enough RMC coasters for my opinion to be valid.

I operated eagle last year a few times and when I asked why we don’t race I was told by a lead we don’t race anymore because the structure shakes too much when they’re both on it. Assuming they ment in the barrel mostly because that’s where most of the roughness is.

I've heard a few things from people who have worked at the park, all rumors though. One thing I've heard is that they can't do a complete replacement on the land because of Gurnee's zoning laws. Apparently, American Eagle is too close to the major roads and if they did a complete teardown, they would lose the land. Another thing I heard is that before Goliath was planned, they initially went to RMC to do a conversion of American Eagle, but then RMC offered to do a new roller coaster instead. I've also heard that American Eagle doesn't race due to the age and that they don't want to put that much pressure it anymore. If all of this is true then I would assume that they would a refurbishment.

I've heard those rumors too, but I don't like how they come from such anonymous sources. I'm not sure how I feel about them. Except the last one seems very likely. And the last helix on the red side does get a bit close to Washington St.

This coaster had the most ass lift off seat in that first drop.

I am super late finding this video. I grew up in Antioch; Great America was my happy place growing up. Worked there for 2 years during high school. The American Eagle was the first ride I ever rode at that park, and it was easily my favorite (with the Demon being a close runner up.) The last time I rode either of those coasters was 2017, and oh boy lol. The ride on the Eagle was rough, but still enjoyable. The Demon on the other hand was a ROUGH ride, I got a migraine almost immediately after my ride on the Demon, and that was the first coaster I rode while at the park. The Eagle was a bumpy ride, very shaky and kind of rough. I haven't seen the red side run in YEARS. During the two years I worked there, the blue side was the only one running. When I was a kid, both sides were running and still racing, but that was a solid 20 something years ago now. I would hate to see the Eagle go; if they do choose to replace it, a racing coaster would be a good replacement.

I really hope there is a way to keep it a wooden coaster and make it race again. My stomach is starting to hurt as these rumors could be likely.
It would be cool as an RMC but I’m worried the park would do what they did with Twisted Cyclone and shorten the layout due to Six Flags being cheap and it only will have track. I want to see it like Twisted Colossus

The vibration from the cars causes severe vibration you can feel. That puts stress on the entire structure. I'm glad to have been on it from the first season it. opened. Okay, you probably won't see this because this video is old but newcomers will. Anyways, for the past 4 years I operated American Eagle. The reason for it not racing often is for a few different reasons.
    1. Dueling trains add too much stress on the helix.
As you stated the helix does get shaky towards the end. Two trains going at the same time apply stress on the helix and can cause the track to break, bend, and simply make the ride uncomfortable for others.
    2. The issue with people throwing things at each other has gotten worse.
People are throwing things at each other whether it's something small like a hair tie or something larger. We can't risk that.
    3. Not enough people want to ride the other train.
When we have low ridership, there is no reason to run the other train or if we do, when there aren't many people on the other train, it still isn't very fun to race.
So, There you have it! These are some of the main reasons on why we don't let American Eagle race anymore!

    • @ZeroCreditsRemaining

Those are the answers I saw other ride ops giving except number two which makes me sad because they race Racer at Kings Island. I think that the Cincinnati locals are a little less rude overall, so they might have less problems with that. :(
Thanks for stopping by and confirming all that. :)

    • @renee_xoxo5240
      @renee_xoxo5240 2 роки тому

@@ZeroCreditsRemaining Oh of course! I think the main reason for people throwing things is because American Eagle is a win or a lose. We have absolute lovers, and absolute haters. We had a case where somebody tried to throw a stick at someone and it landed on the track and had to be removed or it could've caused issues. I don't know how they got on the ride without somebody taking it away, I don't even know where they got the stick. We don't leave sticks lying around. American Eagle most likely won't shut down but I think it'll end up like how Vortex at Kings Island did. Where there are just a few people wanting to ride it and it has a poor reputation for how rough it is. We don't want it to be like that so that is why the racing stopped. I don't know every detail. That is all the people in the maintenance facility told us. There is probably more to it. But I'm glad you saw this!

You have an excellent announcement voice. The video is really entertaining and informative. Keep up the excellent work with future projects. I remember riding American Eagle when it first opened. Just the thrill of being up so high and speeding around the track was exhilarating but the first drop was terrifying. The triple ferris wheel was really cool too but scary at the same time but the park removed it years ago. Marriotts Great America was something special back in the day. Six Flags just doesn't have that charm that the original park had. When the season pass first came out it was a really great excuse to ditch school and you just had to pay local tax with your season pass at the gate. I'm not sure but I think the amount at that time was .31 cents. Instead of spending your lunch money in the cafeteria you had the entire selection of the restaurants at the park. I'm not sure if they still have the picnic grove areas these were designed for special events and company outings when booked which in fact closed off the park to regular guests for the day. When your company or special event was booked for the park it was lunch in the picnic grove hotdogs and hamburgers with or without cheese and chips with other basic picnic foods and soft drinks. The real fun was the park wasn't crowded and no lines to wait for rides because you had the whole park to yourself that day. I don't even know if they still have the tiny rootbeer shop or the hot chocolate shop. Oh the real gem back then was the Pictorium a HUGE screen movie theater located near the Sky Trek Tower. Before it's removal they tried to make it a 3D/thrill ride experience. I think that theater had potential but back then they didn't have many choices for movies. Oh yeah when the park first opened it was equipped with 2 separate aerial tram ways those were SO COOL because it cut on time walking to the opposite sides of the park. Your video brought back so many memories and good times. Thank You

This is some top notch editing right here. This channel is very underrated imo. But the arguments about the parks having the same type of ride, we are talking about the same exact chain that put two boomerang coasters right next to each other. That RMC conversion argument is not really valid in this. Also, the Eagle doesn't race anymore because the structure was deemed unable to handle both trains on at the same time. And they were looking to RMC the ride before. But I think what stopped them was that it would have been a huge amount of money. Especially because a lot of the structure would have to be replaced.

I rode Eagle in fall of 2018 during fright fest about 10 times in a row right before closing, and the operators were racing the trains. We just kept going over and over, it was a blast. I think they still do race them if the trains are light. They really need to retrack it, repaint it, and give it the TLC it deserves. It can't be replaced, either. The city will not allow SFGA to build another coaster so close to the road. So if Eagle comes down, no more rollercoasters will be going up there.

From what I’ve been told, American Eagle doesn’t duel for a lot of the reasons stated such as the shaking in the helix and strain on the brakes.
The only reason I’ve heard why we haven’t had anything happen to Eagle as of yet is because the town won’t allow any construction on the helix due to its proximity to the highway.
Basically, it doesn’t duel so it can last a bit longer.

Also not just the toll of the forces of the cars on the ride, but also Gurnee winters cannot be kind on the coaster, either.
Waiting for an RMC conversion because American Eagle is the most iconic and historical coaster at Great America. I love it so much but it’s just too rough for me to enjoy right now.

i don't see SF deciding to RMC american eagle. i heard from someone that if SF were to tear it down they would lose that land therefore there'd be no benefit to getting rid of it. honestly i think the ride itself is great but the shakiness is what drives me away from it.
note: for the best ride experience on american eagle, ride in the front row of whatever car you're in and if possible, ride on the red train.

Most recently, I heard that the reasons behind six flags great America not racing the American eagle anymore is due to the support structure of the roller coaster not being able to withstand the stress of both trains running at once. Whether they demolish the ride to build a new one, or do an RMC conversion, there are still issues with zoning and construction of a structure so close to a road that is now much busier than it was back in 1980 when the coaster was built. I certainly hope that they can work out a deal with the village of Gurnee for special dispensation or permits to do the work that is needed to convert the ride.

Kentucky Kingdom was able to construct Storm Chaser much closer to a road. Most of the coaster aside from the red side helix isn't all that close to it... I think? I'll be foolishly optimistic that something can be worked out.
I try to avoid including rumors in my videos.

I think complete removal of wooden roller coaster at that park would be a bad idea as people in that part of the country are very attached to some of the “Marriott” era rides such as the Whizzer which is the only remaining unedited original from the 1976 opening season. There was a huge backlash some years ago when the idea of removing the Whizzer was being considered….it’s viewed as a historical ride by many roller coaster communities.
That Little Dipper is from a now-defunct but historic amusement park called Kiddieland which was preserved and restored with new life offering to many kids, their first ride ever on a roller coaster.
What will likely happens is the same thing that happened to both the Cedar Point’s Mean Streak and Magic Mountain’s Colossus which is updating it with the new rail technology, which will require changing some of
It’s design aspects by reinventing the American Eagle. The one advantage it has is that it occupies a LOT of space unlike some of the other coasters in the park that were restricted by space and are very good but not long enough such as Batman: The Ride, Goliath, X-Flite and Maxx Force. All of them good rides but short in length.
Removing the American Eagle altogether and replacing it with a steel coaster would go against what Six Flags Great America has historically done which is preserving various parts of its past like The Demon, the Whizzer and saving old coasters like the Little Dipper.
Certainly the pandemic has impacted everything these days, so I suspect that we may see something regarding the American Eagle in the next 4-8 years. But that’s just me.

  • @squidparty2000

I don’t think they will remove it. If Whizzer stayed over shockwave and the demon is somehow still here, that says something about how much the park goers care about sedimental value

They won't replace the eagle. At the beginning of this year I was taking to maintenance, it's too close to the road. The ride was built first and then the road was added years later. The reason they don't race both sides, is because it sways too much. They could do it when it was first built, but it is not capable of do it anymore due to age.

I honestly don't understand why Eagle gets all the hate it gets. Sure, it's the roughest ride in the park but it's also got the most airtime out of any other coaster in the park. I hope they're able to keep it for many more seasons.

I love the Eagle and would hate to see it go, but it is showing it's age. If they built a new Eagle maybe in a hybrid coaster style I would be ok with that, Sad but Ok. Same thing goes for the Demon though the Demon being pretty much used by people today as a Starter coaster keeps it in demand but she's gotten a lot rougher like the Eagle over the years. It's normal to fall in Love with rides like these but at the same time we have to allow for growth and new experiences which I'm not always good with I'll admit too. The Eagle is at a point where they must consider the cost to either rebuild the exact same ride (Boring) or spend the money on something brand new (A very scary gamble for them). All I ask is that IF they decide to replace the Eagle they do it with respect and keep the spirit of the Eagle with them into the new design, maybe a Hybrid called The Screaming Eagle or some such sillyness ;)
P.S I think a GCI refurbishment would be a better option over RMC'ing as GCI remains true to the Wooden "Wild" feel and look. RMC style is Smoother and faster but Fugly and you lose a lot of the Wooden coaster feel as it's more of a Hybrid style. Either would keep Her running but I hope they seriously have a talk with GCI and see what can be done.

The only reason the trains don’t race is because of support issues at the helix, because they have only done emergency matnence and no preventive. My friend was matneince in the park, he said the best chance is to it being retracted by gci and then being called a new ride.

American Eagle will simply be refurbished and hopefully be given new trains. The ride is too historic and nostalgic for the people, like myself, who call Six Flags Great America their home park. Anything drastic like what Magic Mountain did turning Colossus into Steel Colossus would be met with extreme backlash.
