Actually you can prevent a bullet from breaking the sound barrier. It is called “sub-sonic” ammunition. Bullets made to intentionally go below Mach-1. Traveling fast enough to do damage, but slow enough to not cause a sonic boom.

You can reduce the SPL (sound pressure level) by adding a "wipe" into the suppressor. There are many ways to prevent a bullet from breaking the sound barrier. Use subsonic loads. They are widely available for many calibers out there and for heavy slower moving rounds like the .45acp and .22lr it is easy to suppress the sound close to Hollywood levels. Besides the stealth that suppressors offer another reason that the military is looking into adopting them is because of the hearing damage that they can help prevent when soldiers are fighting indoors. As any person that has been to an indoor shooting range or stood next to someone shooting a rifle with a muzzle break those sounds can be deafening even with hearing protection. If you are interested in a rifle that is actually quieter than what they show in the movies I advise you to look up the Russian Vss Vintorez. It was supposedly developed for the Spetsnaz as an assassination weapon. It shoots 9X39 which was developed from the SKS and AK47 round the 7.62X39. Also check out the Welrod. It was a pistol developed by the British for covert operations and assassinations during WWII.

As of September 2021, movie level suppressors are now a thing. After about 10 to 15 shots you have to take them apart and replace these soft wax-like plastic baffles, and you have to use subsonic rounds, of course. A large caliber round just below supersonic still has an astonishing amount of energy. This technology has developed rapidly and recently. A lot of stuff that was impossible 5 years ago, is actually possible now.
Loved the video but the whole “silence” thing is way off. A suppressor doesn’t make the volume of a gunshot that much less, it just sounds a lot different.

@@May-gr8bp At least most of the information is right, it would be unwise to say it is wrong. It is however, incomplete yes. Subsonic would mostly be utilized in a CQB environment almost exclusively, and if you look over the military specifications for infantry munitions, youll find there is no documentation on subsonic ammunition. SOCOM has indeed used subsonic for covert ops for years, use in military service probably dating back decades but has never been normalized as there is no large scale demand nor requirement. In the infantry role, it almost exclusively applies to 9x19 and 5.56, with lesser representation in 300 AAC and .308

the person that came up with the tank silencer is good at designing
Fyi there's a difference between silencers and suppressors, with a suppressor it literally is possible to slow the bullet down to below the speed it was at when exiting the barrel, this is why you get less range and damage and accuracy output when using a suppressor despite having a longer barrel which usually would have the opposite results... this is because the bullet is literally being slowed down by being spun in the opposite direction of the rifling on the barrel, this is all according to a military manual about the subject that I've read from a college library, they only make them for a select few firearms... mostly pistols. Also gunpowder by itself makes sounds when lit so that contributes to the sound heard...due to the powder exploding inside the casing... so basically even if the bullet somehow didn't fire and the gas was never able to escape, you'd still hear it go off because what you hear in a gunshot is not the gas escaping as you said but actually the powder exploding... I noticed that you didn't mention that. Other wise blanks would not have any sound when fired (because they have powder but no projectile) and misfires wouldn't either because since the bullet didn't leave, no escape gas, no sound etc. But I know this is false because I myself have fired guns. Misfires still produce sound even though the gas didn't escape...

First of all the quietest weapons created specifically to be as quiet as possible including Wellrod, Delsitle carabine, MP5-SD, and 300 Blackout, are either shooting subsonic ammunition or are designed to reduce velocity so subsonic (the best example I can think of is MP5-SD with a perforated barrel to leak out the gas). These weapons typically have massive suppressors, like Delisle carabine. Another sound is the dry cycling of the weapon. Even if you pull a trigger of a gun that's not loaded, you will still hear sounds, that weapon produces without even shooting. That's why the quietest weapons in the world are typically bolt-action. I believe, Wellrod makes ~70 dB sound and that's the best that has been done.

So, first off, subsonic rounds exist.
Second, you can make a subsonic load for a cartridge.
Third, subsonic rounds aren't commonly used due to a lack of power.
Fourth, depending on your recoil spring, you may need to swap out for a weaker recoil spring.
Fifth, have a nice day.
sixth: to avoid reduction in kinetic energy the bullet is made heavier instead of making the powderload weaker.
Exactly!! And that probably would reduce cyclic rate with subsonic ammo even if you put a weaker spring in it

@rwsthedemonking no, because a smaller bullet traveling faster can impart more force. A 200gr 300 BLK round has a velocity of approximately 1017 fps at the muzzle out of a 16" barrel for 459 ft.lbs. A 55gr 5.56 round is approximately 3085 fps for 1311 ft.lbs. Tell me again how bigger bullets are always harder hitting..... You nitwit
You don't have to break the laws of physics to make the gun silent, all you have to do is use a vacuum.
Silencers reduce the sound from about 120db down to 100db. 100db is still LOUD, just not as loud as 120db. There are several videos on UA-cam where people have tested this. Also, it doesn't matter how quiet the gun is, if the round is traveling more than 1125fps, then it is going to BREAK THE SOUND BARRIER and that is going to cause noise. Nothing you can do about that.
_Why Cant they Just Use a Smooth_ *Pillow'* _in Front of a Gun or Tank... as a Silencer?_
_Sometimes I Tie_ *Small Pillow to My Foot..* _and.. I Kick My Cousin in The_ *Groin Area...*
_He Die With Pain.. but.. Without any Sound_
He maked sound when he screamed like:AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAGGAGAGAGGAHHAHHWHAGAGSHAHAHSHJFFHGSUEI
Subsonic Rounds + Silencer = Quiet Rounds, disabling the gun’s flash ability and sound. Resulting in a massive 345 PSI Drop.
Thank you too many people don’t know that subsonic ammo exists
Hello fellow no videos challenge
Foam should be included in the attachment for it to absorb the sound and gas.
If you never shot a gun before don’t expect for a suppressor to silence your bullet
I can’t describe how much hearing “silencer” annoys me knowing that it’s a suppressor

The original patent is designated as silencer. But I get why it would bother you! Low key bothers me too.
I can't describe how hearing "suppressor" corrections really bother me. . . it's called a "silencer" on the government tax stamp. . . . I didn't hear the word "suppressor" until about 1980 . . .after David Truby's book was published.
Yeah, bothers me too, but he acts as if it was possible, it really isn't at all.
"there were no casualties"
The opposing side: 'Am I a joke to you?'
ok
Plot twist: There’s someone inside the gun teaching the bullets to be quiet
Oil Filter supressor: *Am I a joke to you?*
While I'm sittin here thinkin "No way they make suppressors for artillery or tanks." But they say you learn something new every day... Thank you!
