What's a "Sweat Magazine"? Do you mean things like 70s 'Playboy', etc? I haven't heard the term before, and I was around in the 70s. Although I was too young to buy them, men's mags were often found crumpled in the bushes. There's possibly a whole generation that thought for a time that men's magazines actually grew on trees. 😳

The term describes the covers that often showed men (sometimes women) in horrible danger. Although some collectors hate the term as it’s sometimes used as a put down I personally like the term. I used to have most of the Creepy/Eerie's. A friend and I so wanted to be comic artists. While we did get pretty good, I could never figure out how these guys were able to apply such detail in a short time. Guys like Crandall, Torres, Wood, etc. Especially Wrightson. How did they do that kind of work and meet deadlines? You had to do a lot of drawings to make any kind of livable wage. I could draw pretty good but I was simply too slow.
A lot of them (the ones with the more hyper realistic styles) made extensive use of photo reference. Just part of the job. People who don't understand Illustration might see that as cheating, but you do have to actually know how to draw to do it. You cant just mindlessly trace photos, you have to understand form, anatomy, light/shade, etc. It's kind of hard to explain to the average person with no art experience, so I guess that's why it's not talked about more.

I still have a few stories I tore out of the original magazines, including one by Johnny Craig that featured some beautiful pencil work before, for some odd reason, transitioning to pen and ink. It always irked me that later reprints were never as good as the original print runs. One particular attempt was a disaster, printed on glossy stock and appeared to have been poorly scanned directly off the earlier comics resulting in a high contrast, washed out appearance, that utterly destroyed all nuance of pencil and wash work and even some of the finer pen work of the various stories. I think there have been better attempts. This edition seems to have managed to obtain quality scans from both printed and original art examples. It begs the question: how much of the original art for these Warren periodicals still exists? Did the artists get their work back, or was it all buried in a warehouse somewhere gathering mould and dust on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, like the bulk of Marvel's Sixties works? One name among several, missing from this volume's contents list is writer/editor Archie Goodwin, who typed more than his share of the early stories. I wonder if he's mentioned in the text? Regardless of their dubious claim to any literary merit, these magazines featured some of the best works from a generation of artists at the apex of their careers, while passing the baton to a younger generation.
@@natew5544 it just shipped to me directly from the publisher last week. You could order direct from the Book Palace website , or wait for Bud Plants website to get their copies. I have the feeling it will probably sell out quick, even at the high price.
@@natew5544 although, they do often reprint their limited edition hardcovers in a paperback edition I don’t know if they will or won’t. Plus, a four hundred page book really needs a hardback binding.
@@ravesensation5533 I also love the earlier mags, but there was some good stuff in some of the later mags also. I generally prefer CREEPY to EERIE, but both were great. I enjoyed VAMPIRELLA when Jose Gonzales was doing the artwork. Wally Wood's VAMPIRELLA #9 story, THE CURSE, is still a standout. Wood is one of my biggest artistic influences.
@@lostonwallace1396 I agree, but I’ve never had enough time (or money) to get a hold of everything. That’s my favorite part of doing the channel, people see what I’m into and point me in the right direction for more good stuff! Thanks again.
@@tooner58 yeah these kind of overviews also leave at least a couple important people out. I try not to get too worked up about it, but you always worry about people who don’t look any farther than a big book like this to tell the whole story.
@@gilraybaker826 I wish darkhorse would do artist oriented reissues of the Warren stuff the way Fantagraphics does them for DC. I think they have only done Corben at this point.
Craig was scheduled to appear in this book, along with Joe Orlando, Rocco Mastroserio-they will be featured in a follow up volume, including Roger Brand, Vaughn Bode, and other leading lights. There was simply not enough space to cram in everything-so more to follow.

One pet peeve I have about UA-camrs is that you don't do your research. So many things are mispronounced in your pieces, it really amazes me. In this one it's Vampirella. It's not pronounced.vamp-ire-rella, it's vamp-er-ella. Do your homework!

I remember reading Jenifer,yes very disturbing story also the way the end scene goes right back to the first scene. Awesome illustrations too.

Esperanto was created by L. L. Zamenhof in 1887. That Shatner movie is hilarious, sort of.
