This video was recorded by Musuweu Theron Kolokwe in Windhoek, Namibia, where Winnie lives and works. Lozi is spoken by as many as 750,000 people throughout southern Africa, in particular Zambia, where it is recognized as a minority language, as well as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. It emerged from the convergence of two languages - Luyana and Kololo - during the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Kingdom of Barotseland was conquered by the Makololo people of present-day Lesotho. As such, Lozi is more closely related to Sesotho than it is to its geographical neighbors. It is written with a unique variety of the Latin alphabet.

The minute she said "lebetso laka ke..." I felt so emotional, she sounds like she's speaking either seSotho or seTswana. I never knew that people from Namibia do also share a language with us
now u know😂😂
Read about the Makololo(Sotho-Tswana) king Sebitwane. In 1830, they conquered our kingdom around Western Zambia for 30 years. Unfortunately, it ended very badly for them. After an epidemic, nearly all the Kololo adult men were then massacred during a rebellion around 1864. A few thousand survivors fled to Botswana, where they were annihilated by the Bamangweto(Tswana). That Sotho-Tswana tribe is now extinct, but their women were shared amongst local chiefs and warriors.
The Lozi language is the Sekololo language, mixed with Siluyana our original language. It is a Lingua franca of over 20 distinct ethnic groups that make up the Barotseland Kingdom. So we are not a Basotho/Tswana tribe but have a history with them a carry a bit of their blood.
@@user-vw6bk4pb4l Wow, we learn everyday 🙏🏽
Yes silozi is in Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. The language is actually Sesotho but malozi failed to pronounce the words properly. They were overpowered by makororo and were forced to speak sekororo. Their language was siluyana. Now because of their failure to pronounce the words, this is how it is. While Sesotho say lebetso laka Silozi say libizo laka. Where Sesotho say Modimo, Silozi say Mulimu. Where it says Dumela they say lumela. Where they say bojara. They say bucwala etc etc.
@@user-vw6bk4pb4lYou are right but silozi is Sesotho. Only the luyana failed to pronounce the words properly. But otherwise all the lozi words are Sesotho but pronounced differently e.g Modimo- Mulimu in lozi. Dumela- Lumela in lozi. Bojara- Bucwala in lozi. Lebetso laka ke-- libizo laka ki in lozi etc etc
I live in South Africa and speak Setswana. I heard her every word. Its time we really study the simmillarities in our african dialects
Difference from our Lozi n yr Sesotho is dat wer you guys put an R we use an L.... eg...urobale hantle fr you thina we say ulobale hande in lozi
@@deereeds355 May I ask, How did you guys lose and avoid the R's? Because I know us Sesotho speaking people in Free State South africa and Lesotho got the accent for saying our R's from French missionaries. And we use them alot, and do you guys also gain the 3 Sotho clicks like Q, Qh, ngq?
Rona re nale mantswe a ka reng Bo senqanqane, maqalong, seqhenqha, qobella etc you catch my drift...
@@kgothatsomoiloa1784 I don't know how they dd it lol but lemme show you some words dat r similar to your language
Ntate- we say bondate
Keorata(don't know if its the correct spelling)- we say nakulata
Keile- we say niyile
I heared everything too... I can go to Zambia with My Setswana and feel right at home
@@deereeds355 I think it's because Silozi is is also made up of Luyana.
Watching this from South Africa, Bolobedu/Bolodzwi 😭😭 we are one people ❤🙏🏾🤞🏾
Wow, it sounds really nice, and her voice is lovely. Keep them coming, MTK!
this language sound like sepedi, sesotho and setswana
Coming to Katima next week from South Africa! I can't wait!
what a beautiful language!
Wow, this language sounds so beautiful! It has a smooth and melodic flow, and suave phonemes. Very interesting.
I heard about Silozi first a while ago.... I speak Sepedi. It sounds like Sepedi (60%) mixed with Sesotho spoken with Venda accent.
Spot on
definitely.. Sesotho speaker here
This is my friend Winnie, I always speak Xitsonga (South African) and she speaks Silozi and we completely understand each other❤️❤️❤️❤️
Had an opportunity to visit where she comes from and i could communicate with the locals.
@@ruralbwoy you should visit Barotseland as well, the home of the Lozi people. We are friendly and you will feel at home
We once had a visitor from Mozambique here in Botswana, we were very worried about how we would communicate since he spoke Portuguese and very little English and we spoke English and zero Portuguese. When I introduced myself he was like "wait, does that mean..." and he proceeded to translate my name perfectly in English. I was stunned. I asked him a few words in his language and we realized communication wouldn't be a problem at all, speaking setswana and tsonga
Please do tell your friend there is someone who wants to learn the language
really !? Guys, i am mind blown
he banna khaitsedi o bua sesotho mos! lenna nkathabela hotlobona naha yalona, ketlobona lediphoofolo lehona ho thaba le batho ba haeno.
Lozi sounds just like Sotho in SA! Wow...
Tswana also
Okay I love this. My name is Oarabile and I can write and speak Setswana but because I was raised in Pretoria I speak Pretorian, which is a mixture of South African languages but Setswana and Sepedi are dominant. Ketlo bolela ka spitori nou go bona gore puo tse pedi tse di tshwana go fitlha kae. Did you guys understand the vernacular part?
😅😅yes, we did... The languages are too similar
I'm a Tswana from South Africa and I had no problem at all understanding much of what you said because Tswana and Sotho are closely related and Lozi has its roots deeply rooted in Sotho. Now I really believe that it is true that a significant portion of Lozi people are Sotho people who migrated from South Africa under the Sotho Chief Sebetwane in the 1820s.
See below, a Sotho or Tswana person from South Africa will have no problem understanding much of the Lozi language that is written below
SiLozi English

Our history here in Botswana refers to the people of Sebetwane as Bakololo, some of them are in Botswana around Boteti and Chobe areas. In Botswana we also have Barotse but they acclimatized and speak the setswana that we speak here.
Utozi cwañi?*
Ni inzi hande*
Mutole hande* mutola hande is asking the person if they are having a good day.
Ni kakubona kamuso* although we mostly say, "u lobale hande" or "mulobale hande" in plural or talking to an adult.
See you tomorrow is "ni kakubona kamuso". "Ni kakubona hape*" means, I will see you again/later.
Bokuku ba siina*
Bokuku ba sisali*
Bome* with one "m"
Likaizeli*
Muhulwani*
Munyani*
Malumaho translates to "your uncle" it doesn't matter if he's from your mom or dad's side.
Malume means uncle
I don't really know what an aunt in Silozi is but i think it's " bondate basisali" directly translate to "female father" in English.
A cousin in Silozi is mwana wabomalume or wa bobondate basisali or you can just say that, "ki muhulwanaa ka/muhulwani waka( older sibling) or munyanaa ka/munyani waka( younger sibling). We dom't really have a word for "cousin".
Not only Motswana and Mosotho will understand Silozi, Mopedi will as well. These languages, Sepedi, Setswana and Sesotho are mutually intelligible with each other. Among the trio Sesotho is the only one with clicks, Sepedi is the only one spoken in South Africa only while Setswana extends to Botswana as well. Sesotho is in South Africa and Lesotho. Now here we have a new member in our family Silozi.
Hi Winnie, nice to see you
Very similar to my language Sepedi. I understood most of what she said.
Kholofelo Matlala yeah I could understand as well. Im Tswana ..,
Wow sounds nice. I don't speak Silozi but I understood what you said. Silozi is similar to Sesotho. Sesotho spoken in South Africa, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. You should have made it longer.
Yep. Sister languages. There is a back story.
Thato They were running away from Shaka lol..they ended up settling in Namibia, Zambia etc.. the rest is history
@@MH-yj5ed That's incorrect information. I'd like to refer you to John Iliffe's Africans: A History of a Continent, therein you will get the appropriate, in-depth and widely accepted information on African history, not Wikipedia-based information. Shaka's main enemies were other Nguni people as well as the British, not necessarily the Sotho tribe, as today millions and millions of Sotho people still live on their ancestral lands, right next to the lands of the Zulu. I hope you make more educated comments next time! :)
It came from South Africa. The Zulu attacked the Sotho, some of the Sotho, under Sebitwane, ran from Free State, into Botswana, and then into Zambia in 1838. Why do you think the so-called Victoria Falls is called "Musi O Tunya"? You a Sotho, I am not going to translate that to you.
I'm South Africa and Zulu, I understood everything you said, but, mainly because your language is like Sotho, Tswana or Pedi, that we have in South Africa.
Guys we are one, I heard everything she said and I speak Sepedi
Woow..i so wanna visit Namibia..this sounds so much like Venda, Sotho,Tswana and Peli! I think i need to learn more about history!!
Where do you thiink the Name "Musi O Tunya, comes from?
Peli? E banna!!
I speak Setswana and I got so touched when I heard her say “my name is” in SiLozi as it sounds very similar to Setswana ❤ I got so excited hearing that.❤❤ The hairdresser told me the other day that SiLozi sounds like Setswana and I thought lemme find the sound in UA-cam and voila! Thanks for this video this is incredible.
Yes silozi is similar to Sesotho and tsawa because they are related. I am lozi by tribe, I was born in South Africa in 1961. I was told by my father that the lozi originates from Lesotho and DRCongo. Viva Barotseland Viva
Simon Namukolo You would get shot in Zambia if you said something like that lol
A.H.M S why????
Simon Namukolo wow thanks for the info. Very happy that you are my Brother.
Never mind, thats is accurate, Lozi people are made up of two main groups, one came from the South, heading Northward from the great wars and migrations, and the other group came from the Luba-Lunda country in Zaire (DRC). The spoken language is mostly of Southern influence, but in traditional ceremonies, the poems and verses are done in siLuyana, from Luba-Lunda, and has more similarities to the rest of the languages in Zambia, who share that regional history! @@kagiso2762
@@kagiso2762 well because we(Lozis) are trying to get our independence from Zambia and restore our self-governing state of Barotseland but the central government of Zambia don't want that so anyone who brings up talk of Barotseland independence is seen to be committing treason and are arrested. Many of our people have been shot and killed and many others jailed.
It sounds like Sotho mixed with Tsonga
Correct, it also have loads of Tsonga words. I have been to Katima Mililo in the Caprivi stripe and could easily communicate and hear the language.
@@ruralbwoy yes in the Caprivi katima mulilo SiLozi is the language spoken. Myself am Lozi from Barotseland a Kingdom in western Zambia the home of the Lozi people.

Amazing
beautiful!
I’m sotho from South Africa..... I now have reason to visit my family in Namibia 🇳🇦
Am Zambian and lozi I heard everything she said. Interesting 👍🏽
Kimunati
Ha ha ha, we are one. People of the South. I love the way you introduce yourself and tell us exactly where you are. You are one of us sister, welcome.
It was my first time hearing Silozi, but I can understand what you are saying about 85%, I am from South Africa, and my first language is Sesotho ❤
It's way more that 750,000. In South Africa alone Sotho-Tswana (Lozi) is spoken by over 15 million people.
What a nice language
This is so beautiful I heard every word ❤❤❤❤
I wish African languages were more known about globally, a lot of them sound really nice
Wow I really don’t know how to respond or react to the realization that most SADC people are one. Above all I feel so liberated for watching these you tube channels
This is the Sotho language I want to learn. Then go to South Africa and compare it to Tswana, Sesotho, Sepedi and even Khilobedu.
This is 100% SESOTHO with a different accent.
I like it
pretty language!!!
wow this is so similar to the lozi in senanag western province
I want to see Namibia!! 🇳🇦
Chef Rafi's Awesome World You're welcome to visit.
Chef Rafi's Awesome World Ek ook
This is a good language.
I feel a lump in my throat. I thought Sotho and Tswana speakers outside of SA were in Botswana and Lesotho, only. I speak Sepedi and could hear what she was saying.
Thanks to Shaka we cover the entire southern africa. Tswana tribe is also in Namibia.
I’m so shocked this is Sesotho with Venda accent, my goodness!
It's so *pretty* 0-0
Yep this is seSotho
Sounds like fanakaloku, the language which was spoken by migrant workers in South African mines.
Yes we gave u birth here in Lesotho on 1930
wow!!
This is so cool for me to hear as a South African 😀😊😍 your language is so so similar to our ones 🤩
so crazy how i can hear her but shes speaking an entirely
different language 😭😭😭africa is beautiful isnt it
Read history of the Barotseland then you will understand and know where this people are coming from
I am lobedu(molozwi) from south Africa and I swear we are one!! Re mulogo mungwe straight🤞😅😢
Is there a dictionary this is interesting?
One Africa please 🙏 😢 💙 ❤️ 👏

Beautiful. We brothers and sisters.
Wow I understand that, it sound like one of the 🇿🇦 sotho languages. You're welcome my brother.

People of southern africa are pretty much the same. We did not draw these borders. We are all brothers and sisters here
Lwataha kea namibia am zambia kwatabisa
sounds like sotho or tswana
Reminds me of Swahili
Charlie Castillo theyre related
Winnie love you alot sweetheart mwaah💋💋♥️👌👌
Amazing. This was like a mix of sesotho and Tsonga. They apparently were driven out of South Africa by Shaka, during the uMfecane War. Most Zulus are conquered people from other SA tribes.
It's a hybrid of Sotho and chiluba from the katanga region of DR KONGO. 80% Sotho though brought to the Zambezi plains by the Kololo tribe of Lesotho escaping the Mfecane wars. They took over/invaded the settled tribe of The Luyana people and imposed their Sotho language and customs to establish the hybrid Lozi language and a Kingdom called Barotse land.
South Africa! Go to Zambia and connect with your people. These comments speak loud of unity between East and South Africa.
this language is a Sotho dialect
It is a direct Sotho derivative, brought by Sebitwane and the Kololo in 1838, from Free State in South Africa
A mixture of venda and Sesotho 😂❤️
Ausi, haosa batle ho bua Sesotho o Cho 😂😅
History says we come originally from central Africa, our languages were influence by other tribes around us. Maybe we were the same people with Lozi's
This accent is a kill...
Nna naha yaka ke South Africa.
Ke kopa hotla ketlo e thabisa le batho ba Zambia😢❤
Oh and im Zulu by the way. 😁
Giving Zimbabwe version of setswana😂
I herad every, but I'm a pedi😍
Re tla tla re tlo thaba le lona ka moo lol
To: Africans
I think all African governments should introduce a common African language such as siLozi, sepedi, setshwana, sesotho isizulu, etc, to be taught in schools. This will unite Africans and will prevent hatred between one another as we will be having a common African language to communicate with.
Imagine all Africans speaking the same language.
that will be great isn't?
ENGLISH HAS FAILED US!!!
From: South Africa.
Impossible, Zulu people won't learn other African languages 😆 😂 rather have everyone learn IsiZulu for peace sake.
The moment blacks african realize that we did not draw these borders the better.
It sounds like SeLobedu.
Bontate baLozi anti baboa SeSotho.? 😮😮
Batili lu bulela Silozi.😂
I am mopedi and I can hear all what she is saying.she sound like mapulana and balobedi.balobedi use K a lot in their language where Lozi put L the balodedi put K.
That's true, quite similar to Khelobedu. And weird considering the fact that their ancestors were pure Southern Sotho (Basotho from the Free State because you're also Sotho from the North).
But all in all it kinda shows how the different Sotho dialects formed in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
I speak Silozi and to be honest, I understand SeTswana more than SeSotho.
@@firstname6118 Must be because Barotseland is more closer to Botswana than SA. Also must be because Sesotho is also undergoing certain changes like any other language in the world.
Im a tswana from PTA RSA, and i say remove all the borders!
Is she a Rhodesian?
She's Namibian.
This sounds like kikuyu
In Zimbabwe we don't have such tribe pliz don't liar to the world
This is similar to setswana and in Namibia we have batswana ,,we dont have sesotho and sepedi.
Am from Bolobedu in South Africa. Your tone sound exactly as mine. We call our self Balozwi, we speak khelozwi. i was listening channel Africa today, i think Silozi and Khilozwi is one thing
The fact that as a Mosotho I can understand her Language Lozi means that there are Basotho in Namibia ke phetho ke tuu.
@@thandintulli278 ,you don't know nothing about Namibia there are batswana in Namibia there are no sothos there .my own she is from Namibia so I know everything in Namibia. So kwala molomo o re tuuuu
U also idiot if u think batswana came before Basotho, because u all our child we gave u a birth
A can talk Sesotho more than setswana because in setswana lebitso is leina but in Sesotho still lebitso, so shut up £ ask those who know
