I'm here as a Ugandan/Kenyan who was born in Zimbabwe in the 80s. My first language was shona, but spoke English and a bit of Swahili at home that I was taught by my Kenyan mum. I discovered those similarities growing up.

I am a Zimbabwean whose first language was Bemba of Zambia. I challenge you to compare the similarities between Shona, Bemba and Luhya. You will be amazed at the similarities. We are more similar than we differ
In Botswana we have Shona but we also have the Kalanga tribe...In Zimbabwe the same group is called the Karanga tribe.. It's language is similar to the Shona
Why dont you post a video comparing Shona and Bemba language
To be sick-kurwara
I was thinking the same same about Chichewa of Malawi. So much similarities.
@@kefilwemasimo5549My mother is Kalanga (& Zimbabwean) our family is from the Zimbabwe side just across the river/Botswana border. All the way from Plumtree all the way to The Matopos. We have family on both sides of the border as they lived on either side of the river pre-colonisation. According to oral tradition it was the land or kingdom under one Kalanga king
Africa is one big village ❤
I agree. It's a big village :)
Very true.
Nyika yedu ye Zimbabwe & Nyika yefu ya Kenya 👏

I think we need to cherish our uniqueness and how similar we are as African neighbors! Thank you my sister for the research! How on earth should we find ourselves learning languages from outside africa than learning our neighbors’ and sister languages ❤❤
Love this ,well done Sis.
This is very educative . Your pronouncation of Shona words is sport on. You have gained a subsciber 🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼
Fantastic comparison! As a Luhya - Marachi now I understand why I was able to easily understand and speak some Shona during my short stay in Mashonaland (Harare). It was fun 😊.

Hi I am umZulu... ❤ My 7 year old loooves your videos.... I love them too .. but he finds them really funny... he corrects you whenever you say a Luhya word... cos it sounds like a zulu word. I love your content❤
Aaaw! That's so sweet of your child. I am picturing him correcting me, and I'm laughing. I love his innocence 😊. This has warmed my heart. Thank you. Please pass my warm regards to him. He will teach me how to speak Shona :)
Ikhala it sounds like hlala nguni (zulu ,ndebelele etc)
If only as Africans, we could embrace the mind of this clever 7 year old kid in focusing more on our shared similarities than differences.
Lol ngempela? U would sax that. Sanee do this neh, go search for silozi language from Zambia and tell me if would not correct someone speaking ssulozi ucabange ukuthi mhlawumbe ubheda isisotho. Very similar. Futhi nathi nje singamashangane asemozambique, many of our words are like zulu. For ex I'm going home today in xangane it would be " namunthla niya kaya.
Compare Shona and Swahili, it's almost a 40% match you will love it
As a shona speaking person I can say your pronunciations of these words are correct, very interesting video thank you
Very interesting, it shows that we're one people as Africans- I am a Zimbabwean 👍
Wakaroorwa here iwe? Uuye ndikudzidzise Shona

The way bantu languages are mutually intelligible is striking. I realized I can understand half of what Zulus, Ndebeles, Sothos say
You must be very lucky 😊

A Zimbabwean in Australian too. How is Australia treating you and which city?
Oh thank you for joining the family. I'm so happy you came 😊
Very interesting video
The similarities in our African/Bantu Languages is astonishing.
I'm Zimbabwean by birth, to speak Shona as my first language, I speak Kiswahili as a unifying language with the great EAC (Asanteni Wenzangu kwa usaidizi was kujifunza Lugha hii), I understand Isindebele a bit (second most common language in Zim which bares alot of Resemblance to Languages spoken in the Republic Of South Africa) and I speak just a little bit of nyanja/chichewa.
There are so many words that exactly the same in Shona and Kiswahili, that sound the same and mean exactly the same thing. Same goes for Chishona and chichewa. Today I've just learnt that 5000km from where I live, there people who speak a language similar to my mother tongue 🤗
I've also read that somewhere in Rwanda, at or near a place called Njerere, a language which is exactly identical to Shona is spoken. Coincidentally in Zimbabwe there is a shrine called Njelele.
Proud to be African 🇿🇼
My Shona tribe of Great Zimbabwe descended from Guruswa in Tanganyika so it’s not surprising.
Well done Girl . 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Am 🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼 based in UK 🇬🇧. I love languages too.
Our Bantu languages originated from the same source and changed due to migration
Love it. Am Shona speaking Zimbabwean living inthe UK. I Interact with a number of Africans & the similarities in the words is striking, especially Shona & Swahili
Good content you unite Africa in your own way.
Great work Doreen. We are paying attention and learning. Teaching is your calling no doubt
Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 Zimbabweans lsts gather here
U just gained a follower.great content!
In ChiKaranga which is a Shona dialect “mhinya “= swallow.. thank you for the very interesting video ❤
I am Shona and one time I went to Kigali and stayed in a hotel called Ubumwe and surprisingly the name means unity and Shona word is humwe. Was amazed how these Bantu langauges are so connected.
@6:06 fugura is the word for to reveal or unveil. Which is interchangeable with vhura depending on context. Especially when related to opening garments or bedding.
Ehe Fugura
Another excellently done video!
Very good content. I'm loving ❤️ it. I'm shona from Zimbabwe. All bantu languages are from the parent language of KiSwahili. How I wish KiSwahili be made an official language of all central and southern African states.
We also have many Shonas in Kenya actually they Great Grandparents Migrated to Kenya In 1930s and sometimes back they were all granted Kenya Citizenship by the former president Uhuru ..they are Mostly found in Kiambu County in Particular a place called zambezi 10 km to Nairobi and they are very humble and very hardworking and integrated very well with other communities so even the intermarriage is a bit high.
Another thing they work very well with Kikuyu Tribe actually there are some kikuyu there who are very fluent in Shona language 🎉🎉more love ❤from UK

Well done for the research. As someone that is fascinated by languages am enjoying the content.
Hi Makana, I'm glad you're enjoying the content just like me. That makes the two of us 😊.
We are the Bandu people spread around southern, all southern Africa and East and west Africa. I was amazed to hear a brother from Cameron and Uganda speaking shona words and Zulu related words. Thank you for the video!
You are correct. To be sick in Shona is Kurwara. Very similar. I had fun watching this. From Zim. Good job Sis. ❤
Even in kikuyu is kurwara😂😂😂
@@kingjoshuamhuamk2559 wow exactly the same ❤️
Same as kikuyu in kenya kurwara
Wakaroorwa here uuye ndikudzidzise shona 🎉❤
Shona has many words related to Japanese but they mean different things. Taipei, Sendai, Tanaka etc
I've always found it interesting that Japanese words sound like Bantu words. Even people's names like Nakamura. In Kikuyu we have the name Kamura
Watching from zimbabwe ...my first time here. Very interestibg and informative.
Brilliant stuff. Good to learn of the similarities.
Thank you, sister, in Kenya. I enjoyed every bit of what you have done. I am so proud of the great work you are doing. It's one important thing as Africans we should be prioritising, teaching our children and ourselves our own African languages. Our languages are our identity as African people. We should be proud. It's saddening to see African schools in Africa teaching our children languages like French, Italian and other European languages for countries that were formerly British colonies. English and all those European languages should be optional not mandatory for schools to teach languages.
Our Bantu Languages are superior to European languages. I was in Uganda early this year. Luganda is very similar to Shona. I could understand what they were saying. It was amazing to hear the similarities.
Listening to your videos I could not help it but smile and wished I was nearby to share more about the pronouncements which are basically very similar, not really far from how we pronounced them in Shona.
Great initiative and I will do my best to spread the word.
Greetings and congratulations from Down Under, Australia.
Tatenda, Siyabonga, Thank you.
Africa we are one, we are simply one people, the similarities tells you everything. Let's love each other Africans . Mega love from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼
I loved it. Keep it up my Sister,I love Kenyans. 🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼
I am impressed by your effort to pronounce the shona words. Well done. You got them
I went to Rwanda and discovered that a lot of words that the spoke were “shona” words and used to mean the same in the sentence.
Very interesting sis. I’m a Zimbabwean in Australia! The word for swallow in Shona is “minya” which sounds very similar to “mira “.
Educative. The first word Nzara is similar with my oshiwambo language of northern Namibia and southern Angola. We say Ondjala. Journey is also similar, we say olweendo. Root is also similar to us, omudi.
Oshiwambo word OLUDHI and Shona RUDZI meaning Kind, Type or Species and Dhedhela (Oshiwambo), Dedera (Shona ) mean shiver.
I'm Zimbabwean, yah this is educative. You find out that most of these languages like Shona, Isindebele, Zulu, Luhya, kiganda, Chewa, etc were once one language, I think they're all breakaway languages from Swahili or some old bantu languages which possibly were there before Swahili. The reason why we ended up having major differences in these Swahili dialects is dilution caused by tribal and racial interactions. You find out that such dilutions created new languages when different tribes and races were trying to communicate with each other, a good example is Afrikaans in South Africa and Chiraparapa (the middle language between Shona and English) here in Zimbabwe though it got instinct. The other reason for the major differences was interpretations of verbal and written languages.
You also include sotho languages and tswana, venda and Tsonga as well.
Good research keep it up
As a Zimbabwean you leave me with no choice but to be proud of you sister

Wonderful video ... I always knew there was a close relationship between my mother's Shona people and Luhyas even though my father is a Kenyan Luo .... Keep it up as unite Africans and remind Africans and actually Humans we are one family
@@mezinanyaafrica3228 so Luhya and Luo are two different tribes and languages and tribes? i was wondering about that and you have answered that question i had.
Yours is such a blended family. So you speak both Shona and Luo? I guess knowing Shona has made you relate to Luhya vocabulary especially the intonation.
Well done for this research my sister
I have made so many Kenyan friends in the past year and it’s fascinating how much similar our languages are. We are one #OneAfrica
Spot on. You nailed it sis. Africa is but one. Lots of similarities there.

Hi Mutasa, That was a long comprehensive list you wrote us. And even gave words with more than one meaning. Thank you for your input.😊
This is lovely, it only shows we are one people, we have noticed even in South Africa so many words are similar to those in Zimbabwe, we read so many books from Kenya like I will marry when I want or The trial of Dedan Kimathi and from South Africa Mpho's search, Zimbabwe it's a country which embrace other African countries so it so lovely to see you from Kenya having the same motive we also wish to be as Africans
Hi Nekesa. Good job you are doing. These two languages are amazingly similar to the Luganda language spoken in central Uganda. For Luhya(Marachi) it is understandable because of proximity of Baluhya (KE) to Baganda(UG) regions. But Shona is more surprising., being so far away. Obviously the Shona must have come from around Lake Victoria long ago. To be sick in Luganda is “kulwala”. Shona ,it is “kurwara”.Since Shona has no letter L, we understand why they say “kurwara” The word for hunger is “nzala” in Luhya an d Shona. In Luganda it is “njala”.Kiswahili calls it “njaa”.Interestingly enough, both” nzala” and “njala “have two meanings in both Shana and Luganda, that is hunger or finger nails, toe-nails. How about the words for name, ,Luhya(linya), Luganda(linya), even Setswana(leina). Sister-in-law: Luhya(mulamwa),Shona(muramu),Luganda(mulamu).all amazing similarities.
Ofcourse some tones on some syllables are a bit missing, but overally good shona words pronunciation. That was awesome 💪. Thanks for letting us see the similarities between these languages, because for me I really got to see that it is easier for a shona speaker to learn another language, a language like Luhya
I have subscribed. Thank you so much. We have many similar words.
Thank -You Sister-Tatenda
I am Zimbabwean. You nailed it
I love that you are comparing these languages which shows that we are actually not different as we claim❤️ the Mira word interested me. I am from South Africa but I do not speak a straight forward language since I live with different people who speak different languages as you know that South Africa is a rainbow nation😁 So the language I speak is a mixture of Zulu, Swati, Ndebele and Xhosa from South Africa but mainly Zulu. So wait is (ima or yima) which is similar to Mira of Shona and swallow is (gwinya😅) which is also similar to mira of Luhya❤
Shona man who lived in jozi for 7 years. Shona and xhosa have a lot of similarities. You will find that when Zulu and xhosa have different words for the same thing, those words are the same between shona and xhosa. It's almost as if whatever xhosa has that's not nguni is from shona,
Ngazviende mberi 😊you’re doing great job you need a bit of coaching on pronunciation but you’re very close to the extent that I can hear you clearly when you speak Shona thumbs up 👍
Well done. I enjoyed your Shona pronunciation, close and well researched. The Shona is a heavy accent.
Well done sis. Quite interesting 😊. (From a Shona speaker)
Love your content, trust me we are one people❤
Very interesting, in my native language umbundu from Angola, hunger is "onjala". I am sick is "ndi vela", to be sick is "okuvela". To forgive is "echela". I find the words somehow similar to ours. Good job!
Finally someone who speak Umbundu is here. I've been thinking alot about Umbundu and how fascinating it it😊. Thank you for you input
The beauty of the wider Bantu group of languages! We all used to be one nation before the great Bantu Migration
You pronounced all shona words correctly. I'm really interested your videos and I've subscribed for more videos 😊
