      Hello there from 4 years later. The second side of Hounds of Love was reminisque of her last album, The Dreaming which was way more experimental than her other works. You arent going to find Wuthering Heights, Hammer Horror, or even Army Dreamers on that one. The Dreaming delves into a lot of territories, such as bank robberies,(There Goes A Tenner) enemies of war comparing/contrasting each other, (Pull Out The Pin) along such gems.

    Kate is untouchable. The problem is, she is held in high regard in the UK, and was not so heard of commercially in America until Hounds of Love. The Dreaming was played on college stations, but as you said was not a critical success. She still redifined "progressive" in music, starting with The Kick Inside". If we were in the UK, more viewers would understand how big Kate really is. She knocked Madonna off the charts when she released an album. Even while The Dreaming was a critic failure, it is still a fan favorite, and still charted in the UK at #14. In an interview asking hiw did she feel about releasing a critical failure, her response was " I don't see charting at #14 a failure." That album has aged like wine. She is also the first woman to have a #1 hit with a self penned song (Wuthering Heights 1978). She may not be everyone's cup of tea these days, because she disappears so often, and America's idea of commercial music has changed, but every album she releases are different, and each one is brilliant in its own way. I do not understand why her catalog is not remastered and available for this generation, as her songs are as deep as life itself. You can tell which artists of today had an influence on her. (as someone in a comment mentioned you should review Bjork, she was obviously influenced by Kate)

      Leon Tarkshina Yes, a hit in Australia as well, I was just trying to explain how she is well known in other countries, but had no idea I went on and on about it to try to get the point across. I had meant to say Kate had influenced artists that had gotten big in America, not that said artists influenced her.

    The B-sides for this album are better than the best album songs of most artists -- worth seeking out. Hounds of Love is pure magic. I have probably listened to it a thousand times (maybe more) since 1985 and it is still absolutely rewarding. A small number of albums grow richer as you age, gain experience, and your perspective changes. This is one of them. Kate has not stopped growing as an artist: all who saw her show in London last fall (where she brought The Ninth Wave to life) report that her stage presence and voice have more authority, power and confidence than ever. No autotune, either -- with Kate Bush you get the real thing.

    • @lofibri

    • @d1jezek
      @d1jezek 4 роки тому +2

      an odd thing is that i'm sure at the time the story was that Kate bush had read something in a newspaper about a woman who had overturned her sailboat and drifted til she was rescued but i can't find anything now where she mentions that. it was just her own imagination that gave her the image and all those songs came out of just thinking about what it would be like to be floating in the ocean overnight. but there wasn't internet back then and i'm in texas so the part about the newspaper was probably just the way secondhand information gets distorted.

    There are a hand full of albums that I consider perfection and this one tops the charts as far as pure genius is displayed on both sides for story telling and experimentation as well as every song is perfection and fits perfectly into the next. I have owned the on cassette when it was released and worn it out and got the CD. Like many of her albums and is one of the few female artists I have ever followed. A truly perfect album. I would include ELO's Time as another perfect album but that is another story.

    Nice review! Definitely a fantastic album, and wait until her live DVD from her 2014 shows is out, it really highlights this album.
    One thing people who listen to the album should know about Side 2... "The Ninth Wave" is about a woman who has gone overboard from a ship and is alone in the water for the night: her fear, the exhaustion, the struggle between trying to survive and just giving up. Give it a listen knowing that, and realize she's drifting in and out of consciousness and letter her fear take hold, and the song cycle becomes a serious journey.

    My favorite Kate album. It's sorta the obvious one to go with, therefore, less and less people go with it. But as wonderful as The Dreaming and Never For Ever and The Sensual World are there's no other record of hers that has such a perfect blending of pathos, catchy hooks and sonic ambition.

  • @jaymason3339
    @jaymason3339 7 років тому +12

    Even an her most approachable, Bush will deliver an odd beast of a record. Here, with what was likely her biggest commercial success, she offers one of the last albums that was conceived as an album in the days when a record or cassette had two sides. Hounds' sides A and B are two distinct song suites, linked mainly by their expansive production and Bush's potent voice. Her lyrics are elusive and elemental, at times almost to the point of self-parody, but they match the high stakes of the instrumentation. Sometimes Bush's ambition gets the better of her (interrupting "Hello Earth" for a Gregorian chant is bold, yet not in the best interests of the song), yet this is such a generous, expansive work that it's difficult to complain about the few times that the artist overreaches.
    Top Tracks:
    Not to be clichéd, but "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" and "Cloudbusting" are tops. "The Morning Fog" acts as deliverance for what's come before.

    Hey man. First, I want to say that I think that what you're doing with album reviews is great. I believe you really have a perceptive and talented grasp of the core of each album you review. Recently, I FINALLY got into this record. I have to say that I was smitten after listening to it. I couldn't believe how haunted I was by this album. Don't know if you've already watched, but there is a series of British made videos on youtube called "Hounds Of Love on Review" 6 part series. Anyway, it has interviews with the people who made the album. Some of the folks were the musicians sitting in front of their instruments whilst being interviewed. In which case, the pianist explained the chords that were the common theme of the record and the drummer who explained how he wasn't allowed to use cymbals and was directed by Kate to play very specific parts based on the fact that she had written the songs with drum samples on the Fairlight synthesizer. really interesting. Great review!!

    If you want to feel what it's like to have a dream while being awake, listen to Hounds of Love. Love listening to this while working.
    I also love how avant garde her sound is. In songs like Moving and Wuthering Heights, she's very bold about singing in super high pitches that obviously wouldn't have pop appeal. But she isn't trying to appeal to commercial interests, she's hungry to realize her own artistic vision. Most commercial artists are not that brave.

    And the goodies don't end with the album. There are the alternatives versions, with major creative touches not in the album tracks, and a bunch of really great non-album tracks from around that time (a few of which appear as bonus tracks on the remastered version). (They seemed like such obscure treasures back in the day, but of course now they're only a click or two away.)

      kyle stone Dude, it's not.
      MacMahan warbles for six pointless minutes on Breadcrumb Trail, Nosferatu Man has an annoying as fuck riff that ruins the track, Don, Aman is pointless and forgettable, Washer once again emphasizes the fact that MacMahan cannot sing so they just bury his voice with shitty late 80s early 90s dynamics, For Dinner... is a halfway decent track, and Good Morning, Captain is alright with that groove at the beginning but I can never sit through the rest of the track because the rest is annoying wankery.
      Conclusion? 4 1/2 shit tracks, 1 1/2 decent tracks. It's not a fucking classic, it just shows that first wave post rock and 90s hardcore emo elitists are retarded.

    Hounds of Love is my favourite album of all time. And I’m primarily a hard rock/metal fan from a young age. When I heard this album in 86, it changed my life. It opened up my eyes to all types of music that I in my closed minded impressionable teen years previously ignored or dismissed. Not a wasted moment on the album. My only complaint is the absence of the b-side Under The Ivy, which is as good or even better than other cuts that made the album. At least it’s on the deluxe remaster. What a masterpiece. You should review the other album that came out that year that also changed my life. Sting hasn’t made a good album in decades, but 85’s Dream of the Blue Turtles was a gutsy jazzy adventurous solo album and a complete 180 degree turn from the safeness of the Police. He left the biggest band in the world at the time to explore new musically territory, to moderate success compared to the Police’s Synchronicity massive commercial success. His risk deserves a review dammit! I bet you’ve never really listened to that album from start to finish. It is amazing, strange, complex, expertly played and recorded, and a beautiful piece of work. You should really listen to it. Also a very timely record in terms of subject matter with its Cold War themes. Check it out!!
