    "You're Looking At A Higher Rank, Corporal." - Glory (1989) #shorts #glory #movie #moviescene #scene
Glory is a 1989 American historical war drama film directed by Edward Zwick about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army's earliest African-American regiments in the American Civil War. It stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the regiment's commanding officer, and Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman as fictional members of the 54th. The screenplay by Kevin Jarre was based on the books Lay This Laurel (1973) by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush (1965) by Peter Burchard and the personal letters of Shaw. The film depicts the soldiers of the 54th from the formation of their regiment to their heroic actions at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.

And for those who don’t know about Jarre, he is the son of Maurice Jarre who has done the music for “Casablanca”, “Lawrence of Arabia” and many other classics. Kevin was the lead director/screenplay for this movie and “Tombstone”, another classic and one of my personal favorites. RIP to all of the listed who left us too soon.

My great grandfather wore the grey. Was a Confederate cavalryman. 1st VA Cavalry. We were tobacco planters before the war. After the war we were poor, Yanks torched the house, killed and scattered my family. My great grandfather rode to New Bedford Massachusetts all by himself to find work as a whaler. Only thing he saved from the flames, was a painting of the house. Still have that painting til this day, dated 1843. I have his VA belt buckle, stack of CSA coins and a wad of CSA war bonds and his journals too, so much hate in those words. Not for blacks, but for Yankees. For the killing and the raping, and later for having to live amongst them to survive. I think about him now and then. Don't seem all that long ago. My grandfather used to say that "We'll bear this burden and this scar for generations to come, but we'll bear it with pride". Just thought I'd share.

It is an American tradition that the sergeant major of a regiment can _discuss_ an order of higher ranking officer.
If the officer chooses to continue the discussion and ask for the man's _reasoning,_ then no disrespect occurs - up _or_ down.
This is one of the strengths of Western Civilization, and the corporal did well to marvel that a white man reposed so much trust in a black man.

@@bluey_fan968There were colored units in combat going back to November 1861, when the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Infantry Regiment (Colored) engaged Confederates in Georgia. The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment was the first colored regiment raised in a northern state that engaged in battle in October 1862.
What set apart the 54th Massachusetts was its tenacity and effectiveness. While the battle was lost, they surprised everyone in marching into battle and briefly taking some of the fortifications. They laid to rest most doubts about whether black soldiers could fight effectively.
