    The English voice acting is actually not too bad. Some of them did bother me though, but for the most part it's pretty great for a dub. I'd still like to play in Japanese, but perhaps I'll play it in English on another playthrough.

      PerfectImouto This can't really be considered a dub. They recorded both languages in house, they even matched the lip syncing with the English version.

    • @Prophecyx01
      @Prophecyx01 9 років тому +7

      Abraxis86 I think the only game "dub" that isn't considered a real dub is NieR Gestalt (the English version) and NieR RepliCant (the Japanese version). The script for the English version was written alongside the script for the Japanese version by the same writers, and the English version was just translated.

      Yeah, that lightning-snow "sis" moment in Japanese made me laugh too. the English one is more serious. Oh, i'm surprise that Hope's Japanese voice is eren jaeger's. now that's fit him.

    • @Cherryx24
      @Cherryx24 10 років тому

      the same thing happen in lighting returns . he called her sis and she yells "I'M NOT YOUR SISTER!" it was an emotional scene and light seemed blunt and cold.. i bet the jp ver is different.

    • @Zaknafiein
      @Zaknafiein 10 років тому +2

      there is actually a lot of differences, especially in crucial scenes like when Lightning tells hope about focusing on your target. The Japanese scene conveyed her thoughts and reasons for saying that much better. Also the scene with Vanille and Serah, it was more personal for Vanille in Japanese, and it compared Vanille's relationship with Fang to Serah's relationship with Snow much more. With a story that doesn't explain everything to your face, conveyance is important, and that was lost in the translation.

    • @KizuRai
      @KizuRai 10 років тому +3

      I'm playing Lightning Returns right now and I got the Japanese voice DLC, since I can understand Japanese I could hear/see the difference between the English and Japanese and it's amazing how just a few words difference can make Lightning seem so uncaring. I love how Hope calls Lightning "Light-san" it feels like he really respects and looks up to her.
      Although I will say that the Japanese voice for Vanille (or Vanilla) sounds pretty generic and I might like the English more.
      Also the Japanese tends to make more sense.. I have trouble following the story when it's in English but the Japanese seems to flow a little better, I don't think Square Enix found a good translator... or the translator didn't have a clear idea of what the story was about

  • @VIXsternaGAMES

    The English voice acting in this game is actually pretty good. English dubbing tends to lean towards the bad end of the spectrum, but this game has some really good voice acting, which is pretty unique. That said, I still think the Japanese voices ends up just superior to English what with Lightning, Hope, and Vanille.

  • @KazeVongola
    @KazeVongola 10 років тому +134

    Call me delirious, but I think the Japanese voices deliver more emotion so you can actually tell what the characters feel based on their voice alone. That said the English dub is surprisingly good as far as dubs go.

    • @spades10
      @spades10 10 років тому +17

      I can't tell what the characters are feeling when talking Japanese, because Japanese people have different intonations on different emotions then English speakers.

      But the translation, most of the time, misses a lot of the nuance that was in the Japanese script. Having a basic understanding of Japanese while playing the Japanese VO makes it much easier to understand how these characters were originally intended to act and feel.

      @@RaeBordz27 there supposed to sound whiny lol, I never whined at his age, and I thought he was 12. I don't know what that other person is trying to say in there comment, but it's not true. there's a stereotype people tend to associate with teenagers, what the game was doing was trying to portray them as kids. Hope was also raised as a single child with mainly the mother looking after him. so part of how he acted around others had to do with being isolated from others, that's why when lightning was trying to toughen him up, he took it the wrong way and could've killed Snow. when your not used to being around others, your gonna act a little whiny on occasion. but that has nothing to do with his age, it's just that for 14 years he was only ever around his mom. Vanilla is closer to his age and she's more mature, most people look at her kid, but that's because she has a childlike personality, but she was only a few years younger than Serah in the first game, Serah was 18 or something like that.

      And you only say that because you played it in English. I have only played it in English but at least I can recognize a better song. Same goes with that one scene with Snow and Serah, Japanese song> Serah's theme
      It likes instead of Kingdom Hearts having Hikaru /(Simple and Clean) in the English Version, we get an Evanescene song (I love Evanescene but it wouldn't belong in a Kingdom Hearts game)
      I had no idea FFIX had an actual song with lyrics during the ending scenes, of course it was Japanese only, and replaced with an instrumental song in its localization. Keeping both options is better than only offering one. Example: Yugioh

      @MrDestroyedSoulx 10 років тому +14

      What are you even talking about? She's like the only character in the english version who sounds a lot like the japanese version. They wanted her to play her that way. Plus what you find annoying is completely subjective. I personally adore Vanille. She's got such a beautiful voice, she's definitely a good voice actress if you ask me. She plays it pretty much just like a japanese bubbly girl. I mean look at Vanille, everything about her is japanese. She walks so silly and she's always so happy. However it's just a facade to mask her fear and guilt. The line where she says to Hope in the beginning of the game "It's too much isn't it? Face it later." Then she adds a "Ciao!" turns out to be something Serah says to her on day 9, and when she's trying to beg her for her forgiveness, although Serah had no clue she was apologizing to her. Vanille is essential to the plot of the game. Not only is she the narrator, but she's also the instigator of the entire chain of events that lead to the beginning of the game. So if you dislike her then you probably don't like Japanese anime tropes I suppose. Cause even simple noises she makes sound like japanese. Like her laughs, giggles, the way she walks and how she is kinda sexualised in a strange way, aka often sounds like she's having an orgasm when being hurt (much like hentai) no idea why Japanese people are so into sex that comes across as rape lol. She's somewhat flirty but in a quite subtle way. I found the scene where she's climbing and Sazh can see up her skirt and his chocobo gets in the way to be pretty funny lol xD

    • @Zaknafiein
      @Zaknafiein 10 років тому +8

      Jonny Gannett the 1st part of your comment is fine but the 2nd part doesn't help. Rape and upskirts aren't funny. And Vanille's bear pelt was long enough to cover her, making that scene ridiculous and forced.

    • @MrDestroyedSoulx
      @MrDestroyedSoulx 9 років тому +1

      Zaknafiein Well for one I didn't say anything about rape being funny if you read it carefully. I simply said that japanese girls sound like they're having an orgasm when they get hurt. And it makes me think of hentai where so often girls sound like they're in pain rather than moaning, as well as begging the guy to stop even though she actually wants it and is just embarrassed. For some reason in Japan girls are so embarrassed about sex and their vaginas. Possibly due to the way their culture considers pubic hair obscene as well as genitals a lot of the time despite the law saying it's pubic hair that can't be shown.

    • @marktam4983
      @marktam4983 9 років тому +3

      Tbh, I don't think Vanille's english voice was bad. It conveys a different feel for her. Her japanese version makes her sound cute and innocent, while the english one makes her seem like a total dumbass. But neither of which give hint to the burden she hides, so arguably, they're both effective and understandable. I happened to buy the dumbass more than I bought the cute girl image, but meh that's just me.

    After watching this video I found another reason why people hate FF13. Don't get me wrong I like it while most people don't. However, the point is emotion of each character was expressed better in Japanese while English voice seems to be just flat the whole time they speak. I can say that the main reason why the western found it hards to relate with FFXIII characters. The english voice is not too bad but it misinterpret the character. Personally, I feel more related to character in Japanese voice while in english I just could understand what they saying lol

      amen. Despite of being one of the worst FF ever made, the emetic english dub didn't help it and made it even worse. Japanese dubs should never be supressed in favor of english ones, they should co-exist together. There will never be any reason not to do so, because leaving original dub costs no money, making english dub does indeed cost, but including the original one altogether does not cost either.

    I swear my only complaint is that they switched to the Leona Lewis song. The part where Snow is talking to the soldiers and Kimi ga iru kara is playing in the background is the part of the trailer that convinced me to pre order the game.

      I disagree, this takes place in a fantasy setting. There is no America or Japan. In our minds this probably sounds better because its what we're used to hearing, but honestly if the character is white looking, or black or a viera or whatever lol....depending on the creators can make it look or sound like anything. So, no Sazh is not black american, he's a black guy from the final fantasy world.

    I thibk both versions are really good and both have a lot of emotion in the voice acting. I love how much effort was put in with the lip syncing so the English words fit perfectly with the lip movement:)

    (Oops, I forgot about a few voice actors)
    Serah: Definitely English. Her Japanese voice actor sounds like an 8 year old girl.
    Jihl Nabaat: English.
    Yaag Rosch: English
    Cid Raines: English.

    Every final fantasy after X included English voice acting. And soon, Final Fantasy XV (Versus XIII) will include English voices.
    Maybe IMO that they didn't have time to include English voices at E3 so they had to stick with Subs. Like they did with Final Fantasy XIII when it was barely getting localized.
    I wonder what the English voices of Noctis and the others is going to be?

    I actually like the english for most characters over the japanese, I'm surprised since I usually go with original over dub.
    I think it depends on the person doing the voice acting, like, who puts more feeling into it, or whose voice sounds like they fit better.
    So like, there are times when japanese over english, or english over japanese, or both sound really good.
    Either way, its an opinion, the people directing both versions did a great job picking who does which part for who.

    @yojimbox1991 It doesn't look like they re-did all the mouth movements. Some spots still look a little off which says to me that they probably only did some of the mouth movements over and others the writers of the English adaptation wrote dialog that synced up with the lip movements well. Not easy and only those with very high skill can pull it off.

    Looking at all the opinions is interesting lol...I think both Japan and English did a great job on the voices. Japan's more dramatic and English is more easier on the ears. I personally like english a bit better, I enjoy hearing the accents and different varieties in the characters voices. I think Japan gets kind of clumped together and english you can really hear the pauses and emphasis on words. Maybe its because i'm an English speaker and can hear all the nuances and emotions in their voices easier. And uhmm...I guess for anyone's native tongue its more relatable.
