Fran's JP VA is good, but her EN voice has that 'Bjork' feeling that puts it over the top. And it's on the other Viera, too. It really sets them apart as this mysterious, mystical, furtive woodland race, and not just a race of hot treebunnies.
Yes, that's why I like the English version better. Specially they all have different accents. The Japanese version sounds like a generic anime voice.
I loved this game, I did 550 hours on it. I usually prefer original (i.e. Japanese) voices, but this game is worth playing for Fran's EN voice alone!
@@Coouge thing is though, we can't hear different japanese accents if they're there so we wouldn't know the difference. not in this game necessarily but in general
What is Bjork?
@@KeyleeTamirian singer, check her out, her music is trippy
Balthier is voiced by Sanji's voice actor from One Piece lol.
Same with Laguna
And Basch is voiced by Takamuras Voice
Yeah..
Diable jambe (leg devil)
Aside from the boxy sounding compression, this is easily one of the best English dubs I’ve ever heard in localized media.
But the lip sync is good for the English
it's to the point that it sounds like the original and the japanese is a dub instead-
Square has 3 approaches to English Lip-Sync
1. Nothing
2. Superb
3. Horrendous
There is no in-between
Wow. Fran's voice actor is gorgeous. 😍
Sailor Venus (in Japanese)
English seemed to put more emphasis on creating accents for each part of ivalice and race, and thats a +.
Except maybe Ashe and Penelo, English are much better imo. Balthier's english tone fits his character just perfectly. Basch, even when the english one is good, has this more hard life voice in EN that suits him so much. EN Larsa is miles above the japanese one. Same as Vaan. But what makes the biggest difference for me is the Fran English dub. Man, at first sounds a bit weird, but after some time the actress gives Fran such a mystical, mysterious and pwoerful aura with her voice acting. Plus, how well they gave Vieras personalities with the accent. The japanese Viera sound like BDSM matrons.
When I played this as a kid, it was the first time I never cringed while playing an English adaptation of an originally Japanese game (or any adapted media honestly). English doesn't usually translate well but they did a terrific job. The only problem is how grainy the voice quality is; I had the same complaint when I was a kid and I hope that improved with the HD release. Otherwise, bravo to the scriptwriters and voice actors for trying to sound similar to the original while maintaining their own flare.
Same. FFXII remains near the top of my list of best voice acting in games. Balthier and Fran in particular are just fantastic.
FFXIV is just as good in parts, but the simple fact it has so many voiced characters means it's not quite as consistently good.
They always sounded like they had a cold in the PS2 version. Oddly enough, I’ve grown somewhat nostalgic towards it ha ha
What I adore about the English localization is their use of the archaic English, and their localized accents. The Memoirs of Mqs. Halim Ondore IV are iconic
I like Balthiers EN Voice more than the JP, because the english Accent perfectly fits his Personality...
Basch sounds like he was dubbed by the same guy in both japanese and english
While I will play with Japanese voices I will say that this is probably the best English dub I've heard. The use of British VA instead of American makes a huge difference in the gravitas of the delivery. Vaan might be the first young protagonist in a dubbed game whose delivery doesn't make cringe.
I'M CAPTAIN BASCH!
Abigdummy4life
We don't talk about that part of the game.
@@PaintyMainy Yes. We do, and we shall till the end of time. :3
@@Abigdummy4life Oh no
Agree
English dub nails it perfectly. Especially Balthier, Fran and Gabranth.
I'm one of those people that usually refuse to watch dubbed anime because Japanese voice overs are more to my taste. That being said, however, I DEFINITELY preferred the English dubbing for this game over the Japanese dubbing. The English felt so much more emotional and suitable. It's funny considering I preferred the Japanese dubbing in FFXV.
This Final Fantasy installment definitely has one of the BEST English voice overs I've ever heard in a Japanese game/series/ANYTHING.
I've played through FFXV in Japanese as well, and I agree.
I'm looking for opinions here on which dub for XII is better for when I finally pick it up.
Thanks for yours, btw lol
I'm a player who always plays JRPG's in Japanese when it is available but this is one of the very few that should be played in English, the dubbing is outstanding, the game was made for the western market so they wanted it to have a perfect english dubbing. It's funny because I'd love to be able to play FF X in Japanese but you simply can't on consoles, here you can but it is useless because the english dubbing is way better.
I prefer English VA on this one because somehow their "stuffy-ish" and bass-like(?) voice fit really well with the game's atmosphere
I played the game in English so many years ago. Hearing it in japanese is a big hit for me.
Oh my god, here i am just realising that LARSA all along is a BOY! I've been playing the game for years and i've taken quite a like to her(him) and damn boi
I like Fran English voice much better, quite exotic in a way. Not saying JP voice is bad but just too normal.. But I like Ashe JP voice better than her EN voice. I thought her EN voice is a bit too deep
Maybe im just weird, but I like that bad quality sound record in the English voices, IT seems like an old movie
FFXII is so westernesque, it's original Japanese voices didn't suit it at all.
Who gives a shit
I never understood why the english voices had this boxed sound, since FFX had no problem like this, but seriously, why would you play the game in japanese, i mean damn did you listen to Balthier in english ? that pretty much seals the deal
Compression problems
Balthier's voice makes me think dirty things ♥_♥
When you're French you don't give a fuck about English or Japanese you don't understand any of them but I don't really like English voices I find them too dramatics
@@cendrecovfefe2496 Then learn both.. its not that hard. And its not that dramatic but yeah french ears and voices👌🤣
I did listen to his English voice. Wasn’t impressed.
Out of all the FF games, this is the only one that always seems to get better every time I return to it. I did another new game, and it's better than I remembered. I say that as a fan of the retro ones (IV, VI, VII). Sadly the Zodiac Ages version made the game too easy.
Vaan VA is actor in Heisei Kamen Rider as Kurenai Otoya in Kamen Rider Kiva & Decade as well as Sawatari Kazumi aka Kazumin in Kamen Rider Build.
i dont say this alot for most games but the english actors for ff12 are way better
Fran's English VA is beautiful oh my god.
It's not that the English VA's are better, just that English fits this game better. It's not anime-esque or set in Japan so yeah.
It's not set in any american or english places either, I don't get your reasoning
@@BunPrince They're clearly European racially & environmentally inspired sweetie
Oh my gosh I love the english voice of Fran so much
One thing that i found very interesting is that Basch japanese voice actor (Rikiya Koyama) also dubs "Coyotte Stark" from the anime Bleach, and Barch's twin brother Gabranth is voiced by Akio Otsuka, who dubbed "Shunsui Kyōraku" also from Bleach, and on their fight on the Anime they were talking about how their personality was so similar, and in this game they are twin brothers lol.
Nicole Fantl as Fran was just awesome. I didn't really get into the character of Fran, but the voice was just sexy as hell.
The English VA's for FFXII is just perfect. I always choose to play the game in English which is funny because I usually play every game in Japanese when given the option but FFXII, the English VAs matched the characters better. But FFX and FFXII I will always choose English
Since first time i heard Fran voice (english). I fall in love with her 😍
Gabranth is literally the logo of the game and the video doesn't feature him. Shame.
Vaan and Basch before they were Kamen Rider Grease and Ohma Zi-O.
wow they made Vaan sounds so serious in english version and sounds like a joke and childish in japanese version.
Its my first time hearing the japanese voice version, i always thought Vaan was a serious and lonely orphan, but he sounds so lively and bad in Japanese version
I'm not an english native speaker, but this is possibly the best english dub of a japanese media that I know of
I understand a comment like this if the comment is from 6 years ago they said something like this it's ok because at that time rare English dub is good
But you from last year 😅 where tf are you until now? Huh? Under a rock? or just waking up from a coma or something 🤣
EN Balthier VA is also voiced Biggs in FFVII Remake
The English VA is quite good, but the sound quality is horrible.
The shit sound quality is what drew me to the game, I just really like the way their voices sound that way
i like Fran english version better than japanese one, english voice makes her more "Viera race"
***** she is too mature in japanese voice
@@dramatherapyhans9042 That's how Viera are in the lore. They are basically Final Fantasy's version of the Amazons from Greek Mythology. It's honestly both puzzling and funny how for some people like you, making them sound like 14 years olds/Teens somehow "fits" them more than having them sound like what both their lore and appearance portraits: Mature women.
Final Fantasy XII is like Black Lagoon. The English dub is miles better.
Johnny McKeown did Empyrean job on Larsa. He's got that young princely voice that sounds dignified while Larsa in Japanese sounds like you can be easily mistaken for watching Boku no Pico. Generic shota voice with no trace of royalty at all unless you keep into account his archaic pronouns.
After playing through a bit of the game again with The Zodiac Age, here's my rankings for the main cast:
Balthier - EN. Gideon Emery pretty much defines Balthier with his performance.
Vaan - Possibly prefer JP more. Neither voice actor really stands out here but the JP voice sounds less 'squashed'.
Ashe - Probably the only one where I decisively prefer the JP VA more. She does a great job, but the EN does a pretty good job mimicking her expressions.
Basch - No preference. Both pull off the 'grizzled war vet' voice well enough without going over the top.
Penelo - Pleasantly surprised that the JP voice actor makes her sound young without making her sound like a squealer. Both are good but I like the JP one more, it sounds pretty soft and refreshing.
Fran - NA voice, no contest.
Vayne - I like the JP voice more, although he sounds more obviously villainous (which I don't think is true for his character). EN is good but kinda just sounds like a generic RP british accent.
@@Babychris66 Even if I know who this person is, how can it change my honest impression?
Vayne's JP VA is known for voicing villains as well.
Worth playing in both languages; outstanding in both Japanese original and English. I do like Fran's deep Japanese voice a bit better; so regal. But the tone of her English voice is so soothing.
Both amazing
The Japanese voices honestly sound wrong compared to the English, it's rare to see an English dub so vastly superior to the original but I feel like the English dub really is that good.
English voices sound much natural for Final Fantasy 12
There is Sanji (one piece) and Yamato (Naruto) i heard here for the japanese VO
balthier sounds so gud in english
I realize that only english voice is added, their mouth movements are still the same from japanese version.
That's why i dont wanna play this game on English. Lip movement adaptation is so bad in English version.
Ff13 was first one to have lip syncing
@@cole9693 No, the lips don't quite match up in FFXIII. FFXV is the one where they finally match.
@@pwnedd11 in the cgi cutscenes they match but not the other ones
@@cole9693 Oh, ok! And ya know what, it dawned on me after I replied that I was way too hasty... acting like I knew something that I didn't double check... so thanks for being cool in your response!!! :)
Ive never played this game but i always imagined fran to have a deep voice and was shocked when i heard her on a video here in eng 😂 i never grew up with bjork so maybe this is why too
Kohei Takeda Is Also Played In Kamen Rider Build As Kazumi (Grease)
00:41 Henshin (fist on), Henshin (robot jelly in grease)
02:46 i'm ohma zi-o demon king from future 2068, bujin gaim the one who will conquer the world , Kasumi no Jōe nice to meet you, i'm paradox roidmude / kamen rider dark drive from future 2035, sun wukong the monkey of heaven, kogoro mouri father of mouri ran & other anime
01:36 : Ore wa sanji rival zoro "Marimo"
Ashe's Japanese voice is also Umbra Witch Jeanne in Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2
i was always in love with Fran's english voice, is so hypnotic and sexy in some ways...maybe Ashe's voice is better in japanese
I love the voice acting in this game so much its hard to have a favorite but here are my impressions as I watch haha ... OMG I love Balthier's voice in general but in Japanese it is pretty sick...also Ashe :D...In English Fran's voice is my favorite Ashe 2nd favorite haha...overreall due to the setting of the plot I prefer the english voices due to the accents.
0:46
Vaan: "Frano sa!"
Balthier: "Hmm?"
The voice actors of both versions did an amazing job. To a lot of people the English version stands out because English dubs of Japanese games usually don't have much effort put into them, and FFXXII's English dub is miles ahead of that. Also, the fact that the original Japanese dub lacks the usual "kawaii" and dramatic overacting that's present in most JRPGs and anime probably also made this job easier for the English cast as they were not forced to reproduce gimmicky "anime" acting and instead were able to express the characters in a more natural and enjoyable manner.
I don't really get the "these characters don't have huge eyes and colorful hair therefore are only allowed to speak English" arguement though. Contrary to popular belief, not only anime characters speak Japanese.
It's true. Penelo is the "young girl" character but she's very toned down compared to Yuffie, Rikku, or Vanille.
Square fucks up remasters and ports on a regular basis but at least they know how to pick their English VA´s
0:43 Geez, Vaan's JP VA is a Kamen Rider
Vaan be like: MIIIITTAAAAAN-DAAAA
Wow, after finish this game in japanese dub, i just found that english dub is so good. I usually play the game with the origin of the developer team, because square enix from japan thats why i don't think about using the english dub
Beautiful voices
Vayne's JP voice is literally the same man who voices Camille Bidan.
Mie Sonozaki is so pretty.
Japanese Vaan is so awkward...
Welp, then even changed his Japanese voice in Dissidia due to issues trying to contact the original VA...so...
Vaan's VA is an actor. So he wasn't about to reprise his role due to prior commitments.
@@y2shuproblem He also actor in Heisei Kamen Rider in Kiva, Decade, & Build as Otoya & Kazumin.
@@hendradarmawan9698oh yeah I know
For me it's prefer both of them is good for all voice actors or actresses from FF12 even EN or JAP version, Because they're have a long - time experienceses for that job
I often wonder how many of the people saying the Japanese voice is better actually speak Japanese
I say it's better sounding on my ears. Between the accents and compression I'd go insane if I did a full playthrough.
Balthier and Vaan would be my only reasons to choose ENG dubbing.
Someone said in a different comment that this was a poor scene to show off Fran's ENG dub because of the emotions in that scene, but if its that hard to portray emotions while staying in character, I'll take the Japanese voice acting over that mess.
Fran's JP voice acting fits the mature and wise character she's meant to be more anyway.
@@Jaxter0987 There's not only that, if you know a bit of Japanese, you will notice that many lines of dialogue were changed from the original, Ashe, Fran and Balthier are all more of an assholes when compared to the japanese version, especially Ashe. Too bad you'll need to understand japanese to notice the difference
I like both versions, only thing that Vaan’s voices are seemingly awkward
I speak Japanese. Here's a summary. Bad Japanese VO: Vaan. English is actually better. Balthier, ok in both. Bosch, ok in both, English slightly better. Fran -- man I can't decide on this one because the voices portray what they're trying to express, and it's culturally appropriate for each market. I can only say it was good localization. Ashe, both good. Penelo, japanese hands down. dat english acting, ugh. Larsa, ok in both. Vayne, definitely Japanese. So good.
If you were to pick one for a playthrough, which one do you think would be better overall?
You can change the VO at anytime, but it would be cool to see the different language
Well Vayne is a man's name.
KOHEI FKING TAKEDA, THE MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND, THE KAMEN RIDER GREASE HIMSELF HOLYHIT
This is probably the best english dub out there, like no kidding it actually beats the Japanese dub for me
For Japanese Version I think Kensho Ono it's more Suitable taking Vaan's Role
Kensho Ono voiced Vaan in Dissidia. Kouhei Takeda, whom you would probably associate him as Kurenai Otoya/1986 Kamen Rider Ixa in Kamen Rider Kiva and Kazumi Sawatari/Kamen Rider Grease in Kamen Rider Build, voiced Vaan in FFXII
What about doctor cid?? His English voice actor was amazing!!
Why did I feel like in English version it has “game” feeling while in Japanese version it feels like they really speak in “real life”.
Feels more natural in Japanese.
Japanese Basch is voiced by Akio Otsuka.
You know, looking back I really didn't appreciate the voice work of this game
Feel like a replay is in order because god, I forgot how good this stuff sounded especially dubbed
I don't speak Japanese, (though I'm used to listening to it), just English, (though not my fist language; still I'm used to it), but my impressions are:
Vaan - EN: good voice. JP: so, so. Obs: None fits the character so well, though. I find him a boring character, anyway, and it might have influenced my impressions. I only got to start liking him in other games, where he developed his personality more.
Balthier - EN: most amazing, defines the character and adds another layer to his personality. Makes him sound like the main character of the story, many times. JP: not bad, but easy to ignore. Once you've heard the EN voice, it might even begin to sound bad at the ear.
Basch - EN: good, but I just feel like he always sounds the same most of the game, no matter what, and it makes the character sound a little too much devoided of emotion. JP: I liked "the voice" very much, also the feelings it passes, but when I close my eyes I just can't stick it to the character. It sounds out of place. So I keep looking at him, haha.
Fran - EN: one of the best things I've ever heard in voice acting, the tone and accent likely redefined the entire race, not only the character. That scene isn't a good one to show it, though, since Fran sounds too raspy there, 'cause of feelings. JP: good one, sounds very mature and it fits her age, thought you might ignore her, except for that reason, 'cause it sounds pretty much like a character you've seen all around in anime. Besides that, like with Balthier, once you've heard the EN voice, it mostly starts to sound bad, at least a little, but only by comparison, let's be fair. 'Cause it's not really bad, at all.
Ashe - EN: very good, adds personality to the character and the actor captures the feelings in the text and scene and passes them through the tone changing and everything else very well. I really like that. JP: incredibly, I find it even better in all those aspects. I don't even need to understand Japanese to feel what the character is feeling and trying to pass through its voice. It's the best JP voice in this game in my opinion. By far!!!
Penelo - EN: good voice, makes her sound like and older sister who cares for Vaan and keeps him in the right way. Might even sound a little boring, sometimes. I mean, boring like and older and wiser sister might be expected to sound, haha. JP: even a little better, though here she sounds younger, not mainly mature or wise like an older sister. Instead, she sounds like a sweet girl who cares for Vaan and does her best for his good. It's a nice acting.
P.S: I don't care so much for the other characters as to comment about them, except for one who was not meant to be compared, I guess. Judge Ghis, a villain I like far better than Vaine or Gabranth, even though he's supposed to be a minor character. His EN voice is very good, sounds like a person of a higher position who knows he's in a higher position, but also a bit sensible . Fits a villain very well, makes him look like more than just the average villain, which I find more impressive by the fact he is not a major character. He kinda stole the scene, for me. JP: regular, for me.
more of the characters in favor of the English voices I think
Japanese voices are better but Fran's english VA wins this one. It's amazing seeing someone actually trying in English.
The problem with Japanese language if you understand it, is that it lacks a lot of creative language. Not to say there isn't creative language in Japanese but it's very rarely used. Video games, and a lot of media from Japan just use the same old phrasing. A lot of archetypes. Young male leads being all boku boku or ore ore, Knightly older characters using sonkeigo. Female leads being all wayo. Evil villains speaking all slow and deep and kono ore sama wa kiisamara wo blah blah blah.
Noticed the same but I completely cracked up laughing at "kono ore sama wa kiisamara wo blah blah" X'DD Nice.
"The problem with Japanese language if you understand it, is that it lacks a lot of creative language" This is a huge understatement. Have you taken the time to study Japanese? Are you aware of all the onomatopoeia they use? Or the various ways of saying a word, or feeling? Do you not consider this creative? If it is not used in games a lot is a different thing, but I consider English a way blander language, with not a lot of flavour.
Alaby studied enough to get N1. Perhaps I should have been more specific, there’s creative language but it’s rarely used in media. You’re right that giongo has a lot of interesting examples, but when you try to use more creative language with Japanese people you often hear “あーそれ使わないな”. Sometimes that’s frustrating. It’s like why did I study this shit if no one uses it lol
That makes sense to me. I hardly have any experience hearing Japanese but it seems to me that I already hear the same speech patterns over and over. It feels like a kid interjecting "like" and "you know" after every third word.
Well as if English scripting can’t be repetitive and uncreative as well? What you’re really complaining about are tropes or bad/lazy writing which can happen regardless of language.
English dub is fine, but the sound quality is horrible in comparison (whether it's the compression or mixing that does it), and the lip syncing works noticeably better in the Japanese dub. All in all, I prefer the Japanese voices in every instance except for Fran; her voice truly sticks out and has a lot of character.
Fran Japanese voice is also Sailor Venus
the voice actors were good on both sides, but the japanese is higher in quality in terms of recording and post processing. You can hear the voice echoes in the halls at 10:05
Especially the Imperials in their armours sound, in English, like spoken in a tin can.
6:41 it's a voice I love Catherine taber English usa🇺🇸💗💟💌💝💖💕😘😍💘
The english voices could be fine but it doesnt Matter because the movement of the lips is in japanese.
1:44 balthier as sanji omfg
English voice acting in THIS game is so elegant and beatiful.
Edit: Vaan and Balthier actors... Damn daddies! 💖
Ashe and Penelo: JP > EN
Fran EN > anything else ever.
Michael Caldwell Fran‘s EN „voice“ just gives me chills tbh
Penelo voice in EN is so soft and kind, my fav in english by far, especially her death cry lol "I cant".
Never knew the VA of Sailor Venus portrayed Fran.
0:42 Otoya kurenai in Kiva
I like the way that all Viera people have similar voices. But Fran beats them all of course!
I only watch sub as I find the English dubs to nearly always be horrible, but this is one of the few that gives the original a run for it's money. It's not too often that the English manages to capture the feel of the original, much less make it better. I liked the voices for both versions on almost every character, but my preference goes as follows:
Vaan: Japanese
Balthier: English
Basch: No preference
Fran: English hands down. Her Japanese voice is great, but her English is amazing.
Ashe: Japanese. Her English is the one voice I didn't like all that much. It's ok.
Penelo: Japanese
Larsa: English
Vayne: No preference
All I hear from JP Balthier is Sanji. So he and Laguna share their voice, huh?
this is the first i must admit English sounded better than the Japanese version
There is always a side that wins in FF. This one the EN side wins a little bit👌 playing it again on switch and ofc my fav.🤓
Bruno De Oliveira I always play final fantasy in english first then switch to japanese voices after i finish them. English is better than japanese for final fantasy..imo
@@reina2996 well it depends on the mood and sometimes i do switch. Like some chara can be 50/50. Like fran is good on both sides👌
Imo all the English voice actors are better.
I agree.
Definitely.
I like ashe's better in japanese. Maybe penelo, but the male voices are waaaayy better in english
Fran's voice is way better in Japanese and Ashe is about equal but everyone else is better in English. The last one seems to have a completely different tone depending on the voice actor. Japanese voice is very menacing while the English voice seems charismatic but shady.
Same. Ashe is better in Japanese but the rest is better in english.
ma boi's Hirata also voiced Rackam in GBF

Balthier and Basch in english all the way XD
it sucks that in the zodiac age the english voice lines are still compressed. like wtf i expected the voices to be much clearer than before since it's a remaster but eh at least this game got re-released for modern systems so i can spend 100+ hours but in glorious hd
I always root for the japanese voice, but I must say that the english dub is really good! Far better than FFX english dub.
this is the ONLY game that I prefer English Voice over Japanese. 日本語版の声優さんたちが悪いわけじゃないんですけど、なんていうか英語版の方は独特な魅力があって、自分の中で想像してるキャラクターのイメージにもっとも近くてすごく正解だなと思います。

Gabranth English voice sounds like that digital foundry guy
😂
I don't speak Japanese... Are they speaking in ye olde Japaneserish?
No. The upper class characters are speaking like polite upper class, but it's all pretty standard Japanese. The setting itself is exotic enough to them I suppose.
I must concur with a lot of people here, the English voice acting is more easily distinguishable and fitting. The Japanese voices aren't bad, per se, they're just awfully generic.
The Japanese voice I like best would probably be Vayne, lol. Larsa, while I get he's a kid, sounds straight up like a little girl rather than a young boy. :/ They really missed the mark on directing his lines in Japanese, imo.
I reckon Marquis Ondore, Al-Cid Margrace, Reddas, Doctor Cid and Gabranth should've also been here.
