  • Pool Renovation Episode 6: Short update on my pool renovation progress. I need to remove the old cracking plaster from the shell before applying new plaster. There's a risk the new plaster could fail if it's applied over old plaster with a weak bond to the gunite shell. Rather than paying a professional to do this portion, I took it on with my son as a DIY project. Visit my webpage at www.bdpgarage.com
If you are or know of a plaster contractor in the east Tennessee area, I'm looking to hire someone for that part so please message me their contact info!
Here's my video of how I repaired the cantilever pool decking that had sunk.

Next time you can pressure wash and acid wash it, then apply a bond kote. No need to remove old plaster unless it’s delaminated.

More than 1/2 of it was delaminated so I decided I disnt want to risk it.

I found it helps to close your eyes and imagine all the dollar bills that won’t be going to someone else’s wallet. 🤣

How long could you have the gunite exposed to sunlight ? Im thinking about resurfacing my pool backyard entirely myself.. im not sure if thts even possible. Pool is about 33 thousand gallons.

I dont know if theres a limit to exposed gunite, but lots of people have it exposed for many months while waiting for plaster crews. Its the plaster that has some limits on exposure.

Have you tried side cretes roll on plaster?

@@Gummy1991 i have not, but I did consider it. Ive read a lot about the type of coatings that can be rolled on and they dont seem to last very long, though I havent heard much specific feedback on sidercrete to judge.

Wonder if you could sand blast it

There are some companies in other states that do hydro blasting, which is like a super high pressure washer. I looked for someone who could do that in my area but came up empty.

Only time sandblasting is required is when it’s old paint. If you need to get rid of paint, find a water blaster. Less dust to deal with.
