- This is a timelapse video of the preparation of the skull of a Hyracodon nebraskensis - an extinct early form of hornless rhino. This comes from a private ranch in the Brule Formation of South Dakota and dates from the Oligocene 33-30 million years ago.
During this video, I use various preparation equipment including:
Pneumatic Air Pens:
ZoicPalaeotech T-Rex Air Scribe
ZoicPalaeotech Balaur Air Scribe (fine detail around teeth)
ZoicPalaeotech Bronto Air Scribe (for bulk matrix removal)
Air Abrasion Unit:
ZoicPalaeotech Custom Large Capacity Iron Powder Unit
Medium: Soft Iron Powder at low pressure
Consolidants & Stabiliisers:
Paraloid B-72 (5% & 10%)
Cyanoacrylate
YESSSS THANK YOU!! I’ve been itching for more fossil prep timelapse and you absolutely deliver every time! I could spend hours upon hours watching sped up fossil prep! But alas, it’s a VERY small niche so far and I think I’ve only seen a couple other channels do it. I can’t wait to see more projects like this in the future!
Nicely done Tom, brilliant preparation video.
i have always had an interest in fossil hunting and wanting to prep ever since i was a kid.. i did start a small museum in are school with some stuff i had gathered nothing huge or spectacular just small things.. and always wanted to get into prepping for 3d scanning also.. just never thought i would be able to afford that sort of equipment etc.. or getting hold of them.. love the video.. :)
All in for a new prep!
I have a question is it dangerous to prepare fossils?Im 15 and i wonder if it is allowed at my age because my parents told me that im not old enough
