    I did this with two friends last spring (May). Even though late in the season, I believe it had snowed the day before, and we hit snow at the switchbacks around 6000 ft. Higher up, there was insane amounts of snow (we were all in shape but technical beginners. I was wearing shorts!) There was one moment where you kind of traverse a hillside and the wind almost forced us back. And then at the narrows the wind blew my hat over the side of the mountain. Even before the narrows the trail disappeared in the snow and we trudged through, traversing up to the summit. Though I was wet and sunburnt, was one of my favorite hikes I've done.

    Hiked this for the first time yesterday. Definitely a tough hike. Your video and guide helped a lot. One spot in particular where I referred back to your notes, was a little past the Bear Flats sign. I recognized the overgrown (correct) trail off to the left from your video and guide. Met a hiker later, who took a right, instead, and ended up on the wrong trail. Luckily someone had a GPS who helped him find the correct trail.
    One item to note is that the Visitor's Center doesn't open until 7:00am (which means neither do the bathrooms or parking lot). And the gate closes at 3:00pm. So people who park there need to be back by then. There is limited parking in front of the center. I arrived at 6:30am (on a Saturday) and there were no more spots. I found a spot on the side of the road farther up just before the restaurant.

      Sweet, thanks for the tip Mike, very helpful. I'm just updated the parking note on the blog post. It's a shame that they lock the lot up. I don't think it was always like that (but I could be mistaken).
      And that right turn at Bear Flats, I made that mistake the first time I did this hike too. Luckily I realized it after a bit.

    Love your hiking guides man! Very detailed and lots of information! Love that you also include GPX files since I have a fenix myself!
    Keep it up!

    This is such a beautiful trail but so difficult. I hiked it last weekend, after hiking San Jacinto and San Gorgonio on consecutive weekends, and this took the biggest toll on my legs! Although it is steep, the descent on this trail didn't feel as tough as the Ski Hut trail. I felt more in control because there were fewer loose rocks and the trail felt more firm. I only had to use my trekking poles in a few places. My ideal Baldy hike (if I had transportation between the trailheads) would be Devil's Backbone up and this trail going down.

      Yea this is 100% my fave for Baldy. Hoping to hit it again this year before it snows.

    Great video. Very cool to see the top portion of the trail. I attempted this as a trail run 2 weeks back and had to turn around for snow covering the trail. Next time I'll know to bring my spikes! That said, the wind was steady 20mph gusting higher, which made the narrow bits more nerve wracking. Hopefully next time I'll have a calm day like yours!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 роки тому +1

      Yea, I'd wait a bit until all the snow is gone. A hiker died on this route a few years ago, and a SARS team member died around here looking for him. Def much different experience based on the conditions.

    Thanks for the video. My sister and I went there on '08, not well-prepared like gear wise. We took the short cut followed the lift trail, didn't reach the top though because it was so windy at the devils backbone. I'm hoping to hike there this winter. I live around the area, IE.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  5 років тому +1

      Yea, it can get really windy up there. Did the hike a few weeks ago and folks who camped at the summit had their tents blown down. Check the weather if you do it in the winter, if there is any snow and ice, just wait until spring when it's safe. Not worth the risk.

  • @revolutiongaming4557

    Is the narrows as wide as the part of the devils backbone trail on both sides and is all of the narrows on the bear canyon trail that has sheer drips on either side wide enough for hikers to walk on

    have you ever hiked Pine Mountain near Guffy Campground? i want to hike that mt so bad is it is technically the 2nd tallest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains at 9,650 ft. theres virtually no videos on it which i find kinda strange.

    that "narrows" part of this trail is that the trail that leads you to Mount Harwood? it looks like it a lot.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  7 років тому +1

      No, this hike comes in from the west, but yea, it looks a lot like some stretches of the Devil's Backbone.

  • @Tippi08
    @Tippi08 8 років тому +2

    Hey Cris, great vlog. Quick question, I know from past experience that I probably wouldn't stomach the 'narrows' portion of the trail so well. However, doing a hike in the tree-line and away from the crowds is really important to me. Would it be worthwhile to still take the Bear Canyon Trail and just turnaround and head back down once I get to the 'narrows' part?
    If getting to the top of mount baldy was my priority, I would just take the main trail. For me, it's more about just being outside in nature and I LOVE hiking in the trees and forests.
    Thanks for your input! I just found your channel and am looking forward to checking out more of your hikes. I've vlogged a few hikes that I've done in Alaska if you want to check out the landscape and the wilderness over there. Sending many blessings to you!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  8 років тому +2

      Wow those Alaska hikes look awesome. Alaska is on my list... so many hikes, so little time...
      For the narrows, it actually looks worse that it is. I would recommend going up there and seeing how you feel. As long as it's not crazy windy, you should be fine. I have a friend who is really afraid of heights, and she managed to do it. Her advice was just look down at your feet and keep going. And if you want to turn around, it's still a really nice hike.
      If you're looking for a nice hike without the crowds or heights issues, try this one: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hiking-la/hike-ontario-peak-bighorn-peak/

      Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely hike up to the narrows part and see if I can do it. I'm always looking for a hike that is away from the crowds, so I really appreciate you sending over the Ontario peak link too. Thanks for all of your help!

      @@Tippi08 I know this is 6 years ago, but what did you wind up doing? I'm also not keen on the narrows, especially that little section where it's a more of a catwalk, rather than a drop on either side. I know the Bear Canyon Trail narrows is pretty short compared to narrows on the Devil's Background, but it still doesn't thrill me lol (fear of heights since I was a little kid). I might also try the beginning of this trail in warmer weather and see how it goes. I think there are some beautiful flowers on the lower sections in spring. I don't really care about summiting, but I'd rather do a gut buster trail any day than one that makes my knees shake.

    Your right it's a tough hike. It's the steepest 6.5 miles in that whole area right?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  6 років тому +1

      Good question, not sure of all the gradients but def one of the tougher hikes. Iron Mountain (the one nearby, not SD) is probably tougher but def not as pretty.

    How do you avoid dropping off the cliff if there's drop offs on both sides

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  5 років тому

      It's not so narrow that you will fall off if you don't balance correctly.

    I'm new to hiking. Only done Pineknot trail,Castle Rock, and Sunset Peak. How far past the bear flats do you think would be pretty reasonable for a beginner. Thinking of going tomorrow around 9 am solo. No poles just hiking boots. No snow in forecast. Thanks.
