My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
That's the best review ever. Thanks for not cutting that out. And your doing a great job on the channel. You have really helped me out with all your great information.
Loved your 5 kayaks under $500 vids (unbiased review), your pfd vids are top notch, and the fact that you did not edit out your error in judgement resulting in a temporary loss of paddle and gear highlights just how upfront and honest you are. If I lived any where near you, you would have a loyal customer.
Just wanted to thank you Dan, because of your reviews I bought a Big Fish 105 today! I was sold on the Vibe but seeing I couldn’t see and test it I decided to check out other models. This video was the deciding factor plus it made me laugh. As I have stated before I wish you had an East coast shop. Thanks again.
Have you ever thought of making a spreadsheet with your stability rating, speed and what ever else you evaluate. That would be very interesting to look at all the brands you carry.
Brother man, thanks for posting this. I just got this kayak for Father’s Day, and the second time I took it out I flipped it...TWICE...in about 5 minutes doing something similar. I was in the ocean with a fair amount of chop (1’ - 2’ waves) coming in from my right, and I crouched in front of the seat so I could quickly lower it into the lower position. Well, my weight lowered the bow just enough for a wave to hit it, knock me to the left, and send the thing rolling. Never flipped a kayak before, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. I was so caught off guard, that once I got back in the kayak, I didn’t even think about my rod falling out. I lost it...ugh. Next time I’m fastening the rod bungees for sure. Also lost my knife, pliers, and lip grippers (they were all in the pockets under the seat). It was my fault - I threw the balance off moving forward like you did. Otherwise, the kayak is super stable and I love it for kayak fishing. I had it out the day before and it was great. I highly recommend it for kayak fishing - just don’t put your weight on the nose!
Derek Ottens I don’t own one yet. But thought that most stuff needs secured or tethered . He makes it look so easy. I m sure it wasn’t easy righting it in waves.
Jimmy Siniawski Yes, it’s best to have everything tethered or locked in the front hatch. I didn’t since I had never flipped a kayak at that point...live and learn. I tether everything now. The waves definitely played a part in my flip, but the weight is more on the back half of the kayak and less on the front. I’m 2.5 bills, so when I moved up, the nose got pretty low to the water. Still love the kayak, I’m just more cautious now.
Derek Ottens this post is two years old. I just bought this today and I want to use it for ocean fishing how is it holding up? Does it handle well in the open ocean meaning not in the cover of a break wall or marina/bay?
FactoryToe1982 It’s awesome, have used it many more times and haven’t flipped it since that day. You’ll be fine, just know the back half supports more weight than the front half. If you’re in choppy water, don’t weigh down the nose. When I know the water is choppy, I put the seat in the lowest position and don’t adjust it until I can get out of the wind or kayak and do it. Go out and enjoy it, it’s a great kayak!
Don't feel too bad Dan. I was out a couple of weeks ago in my Big Fish 120 and did something similar. I was having a lot of trouble with a new baitcaster. It seemed like every 3rd cast it would just lock up. I cast one time, it locked up and I wasn't ready and it yanked the baitcaster out of my hands. In sheer stupidity, I dove for it. I knew better, but it was instinct. At least you found everything. I happened to have my phone out of the waterproof box because my wife had just text me. It was gone as well as the new baitcaster that was giving me trouble. I ended up recovering the other 3 rods at least.
I have the Big Fish 105. I'm a big guy at 280 lbs. I had to add stabilizers. It's really a slow yak I have to put in some real paddling to get anywhere. My first kayak and I love it.
The fact that you had to do all that to capsize says a lot! It's also a great example of why I always wear my vest, despite not being required to where I fish. Great video, as usual.
Well guys i was able to finally find a dealer for the Big Fish 105 in Fayetteville NC. Come to find out that Gander Outdoors are a dealer for them Boy what a deal did they give me. First if you are a member of there Good Sam club the price was automaticly lowered to 749.00. But the real crazy part when i got to checkout it rang up for 649.00 and with tax the boat ended up being 730.97 out the door. That of course you have to add 19.00 to join the club. thats still a great deal all day long. I just wanted to THANKYOU for bring this fantastic Kayak to my attention and taking the time to do such a great review on it. I told the associate that took care of me that they owed all the credit to yall and told them about your shop and the reviews. I want to say THANKYOU again form helping send me forward in purchasing such a fine kayak that i would probally not found without your help and getting it for over 50.00 dallars less than list is just unreal. Thanks again guys keep up the good work and THANKS again.
Great vid! Here’s a little tip. Use your index finger on the hand you hold your rod with to “feather” and stop your cast. Keep that left hand free. A little practice and you’ll be putting that Jig in a coffee cup at 50’. Good fishing!
I love your reviews! They are as entertaining as informative. I sure wish that I was close to your shop so that I could try out some of those yaks. I am looking to sell my canoe due to my daughter moved out and I'm solo anymore. You are helping me to try to choose my first "Yak". Thanks!
I have a Big Fish 120 and I've dropped a Watersnake down through the sonar pod hole. I tried it first without a rudder and it was almost impossible to turn and the back was all over the place in the wind. I bought a rudder and now it is perfect.
Thanks for the review. Been looking at kayaks lately and i found the pedal kayaks are too expensive for me rn so ive been looking for a solid paddle one. These big fish 105 are on sale rn so i think i’ll be getting this one! This vid just cemented that.
Headwaters Kayak so I've been watching all of your videos and have no idea. My budget is probably under 1000 before modifications so that video helped a lot. Should I swing by the lake to test the yaks out before coming to the main store?
depending on what your looking at. We have most the boats down there but not all. As long as your flexible we can get you out. Saturday is shaping up to be a crazy one for us!
Nice video, I'm watching this after flipping a rental kayak and losing two rods and my tackle, so nice to know even a pro can do the same lol. I also bought the feel free 10 before seeing this and I'm getting ready for the maiden voyage today, I hope I made the right choice and thanks for the video
Jason King dont debate, make the drive and let’s try some yaks! I’ll pick 3-4 kayaks that suit your needs and we’ll run over to the lake and you can take them for a spin. You’ll walk away with such a great education and feel confident you made the right decision.
Headwaters Kayak thank you so much! Yeah I’ll head that way for sure here soon, I have so many questions lol I’m new to kayaking let alone kayak fishing. Think I’m going to email you them ahead of time. Great channel btw.
I have this boat and love it! First trip out was a 12 mile overnight float with class 2 and 3 rapids. Stable, maneuvers well, lots of dry-bag space and comfortable.
Just had another guy today that purchased a Big Fish that was also a Vibe owner. For him the ability to stand and move around was important. The Vibe is good for standing, but the room and stability is better on the Big Fish. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Happy paddlin.
Headwaters Kayak thanks for the info man, have any of your customers had problems with the rudder failing to fold up or down completely? I just left a similar comment on one of your vibe videos... 😂
I just piched up my big fish 105army green camo pattern, plenty of room for my tackle, and i use the front compartment for a cooler, will use front of boat for a battery, and small lights, 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐬🐋🐳🦈🐠🐡
Hey man. Love the content! Could you, maybe, do a video on transporting kayaks? From home to Lake.. Like, for us who really want to kayak fish but don't own a pickup truck.
Have only seen this rig online, but that's a great price point for what one gets, which includes the Feelfree quality as you mentioned. Nice that it is rudder-ready, which the Lure 10 cannot be rigged for. The one drawback (personal opinion) is that there is no front hatch/internal storage like the Lures have. I break-down my C-tug and store it in the front hatch of my 11.5, which saves a trip back to the truck. Other than that, this is still a great deal! Oh, I also use the NRS Chinook pfd, and appreciate the flotation demo. ;)
Nice review ! I’ve been waiting for a good review on the 105 because I’m a y’all but skinny guy and I feel like I don’t need the 120. I’m 6’2 150lbs. I think the 105 might be the one I’ll be purchasing soon.
Love the testimony on how stable that yak is ,just before you flipped it over !!! I’m still laughing out loud Anyway not picking on ya it’s humorous I got a big fish 120 after watching you’re review so I ain’t scared , first run was in the Gulf of Mexico off Anna Maria island and it was rough whitecaps and strong currents, wind ,waves and it handled it all but I won’t do that again it was too hard to paddle , looking forward to some smooth lazy water and my new trolling motor!!!
I’d really like to know if you had to pick the Big Fish 120 vs the Crescent Lite Tackle, for a 250lb male, versatility for ponds, lakes, rivers, or some coastal water, which direction you would go. A comparison video would be awesome.
I like my 3 Waters kayak. There are several things that I would change if I had the power to do so. The pod is great, the problem is that any water that comes over the front of the kayak goes straight inside the pod instead of draining out as intended. The rod holders are designed for rods shorter than 6 feet. This kayak is easy to stand up in. The seat is very comfortable. My 10’6” 3 Waters fits perfectly in the 6’ bed of my truck. Please note though that this kayak is very heavy. With the rudder installed, it is next to impossible to use the rear handle to carry the kayak. With all this said, I am happy with my purchase. For the water I fish, this kayak does the trick.
I ordered my kayak through ack.com. They did a great job protecting the kayak for shipping. The delivery guy was great. He helped me unwrap the kayak and helped me inspect it.
You probably just need to seal the grommet on the front of the pod. I have 2 batteries in mine and have never had any water get in there. Even when I flipped mine, it was completely dry inside.
Eric Dodge the Lure has some distinct upgrades like wheel in the keel, inside storage, foam standing platform, upgradable to pedals. With that said if I only had $1300 to spend on a yak I’d buy the $999 big fish and a $300 Paddle. If the Lure and a nice paddle are in your budget spring for the Lure. Both boats need a Rudder IMO. So factor another $200 in for that.
New to Kayaking and loving your channel, with that type of hull I know it adds stability but my how does it track when going straight, how easy is it for manuverability when turning and how much does it get pushed by wind, waves. Thanks!!
Just curious would the feelfree overdrive system work with this kayak? The sonar pod seems similar and they are made by the same company, it would be cool if it did fit would be like a baby Dorado for half the price.
J KillerB2u similar just way better plastic. The pelicans are sheet formed which creates inconsistencies in the plastic when pressed into the mold. Rotomolding is far stouter although a bit heavier. Also the ability to have a rudder is a definite plus.
I have been looking for a sit on top fishing kayak for a while now, and had pretty much narrowed it down the Field and Stream Shadow Caster 12'3". Then I found this channel and now I have ALLLL KINDS of options! (Thanks a lot!! haha). Is there any comparison you would be able to provide between the Big Fish and the Shadow Caster?
If your that small get a smaller better paddling kayak. You don't need that much stability and you will sacrifice some serious paddling performance. Cresert Kayaks, Vibe Seaghost, Bonafide RS 117 would all be better paddling options for a smaller paddler.
@@HeadwatersKayak man... now I know how handicapped people feel like.... I was told the same thing about the sea ghost, the cresert kayaks are not my style and the bonafide are over my budget... I need a wide kayak to fish bass on lakes red fish & snook on the flats and some space for my dog.... I know the yak is heavy so bought a small boat trailer, I'm back in square one again....
Great vid ... great review. Annoyed that I bought the Lure 10 before seeing this. I'm 6' and 250 but space constraints limited me to the 10 footer. How similar are the two with regards to stability? Will I see similar results with the Lure? Great content though - subscribed.
Ben A I have had the Lure 10 for over a year now and I am 6ft and weigh 249.. The Lure is great..no problems in stability and the lack of a rudder has not effected me in the least.. I like the fact that the lure has a front hatch compartment which allows me to stow my rods, vest and other items while transporting too and from my fishing locations.. Recently installed a trolling motor for those longer stints on the bigger lakes.. Here is a link to my setup.. ua-cam.com/video/A03SSQVaAbg/v-deo.html
I complete agree Dave. Quality of the Lure is outstanding and the stability is great. Only had it out a couple times so I'm still getting use to it. I haven't quite tested out standing/casting. I've gotten comfortable with adjusting the seat and fishing from the highest position but both times I've gotten it out on the water, it was windy/choppy. How about you? Stand and cast much? If you don't mind me asking - how did you go about mounting the trolling motor? I was out on a 170 acre lake and while I loved the exercise - would totally love having the option of something doing the work for me lol.
ok so i found one of these at a local store im used to a waterskeeter single seat pontoon boat is this going to be faster or slower than my pontoon boat
The Fishing Pharmacist You know I haven’t had them both back to back. But I would say the big fish is more stable. The Moken definitely paddles better though.
Headwaters Kayak yeah, when I stand in my moken v2 it’s definitely a little shaky. I can find the secondary lock pretty easily but when I make big cast or hook set it’s a little scary. Do you notice that with the big fish 105? I just picked it up and I have a 90 day return policy I can use for store credit or return. I was thinking about exchanging it for the 105 since I enjoy standing and fishing. Any thoughts? Thank you for the reply
I absolutely love everything about this one, EXCEPT that it seems slow, and you confirmed it. would the 12' be any faster with a rudder? or what is comparable to this but has more speed?
@@HeadwatersKayak thank you so much for the quick reply! I was on the fence between this one and the pescador pro. do you know if the pescador would be faster than the big fish? if also be curious to hear any other thoughts you have
@@HeadwatersKayak thank you once again, that makes perfect sense. I'm looking for a 10'-12' sit on top. I intend to use it on chain lakes where I may encounter wind and small chop/white caps crossing open sections in order to get into the smaller channels. I want something with enough speed to get me through the open water but also stable when I get to the flat water. am I looking in the right direction with the above choices or would you recommend something else?
Hi Dan, Great videos, very informative I'm looking to buy a new peddle kayak and I am going to be using it mostly in harbors, Newport and Huntington and lakes as well, maybe a little inshore also. I am 6ft tall and 275 What would you recommend. I would really appreciate your help.
Okay I'm a newbie to this so what is the purpose of this rudder upgrade you keep referring to and what is it's function relating to the kayak itself since this isn't a pedal driven boat ?

You’re my favorite for reviews. I have a list of ones I’m gonna rent for my upgrade to a fishing kayak.

Thank you so much for the review, I was literally looking for a review earlier today on the 105 and all I could find is 120 reviews.
Scott Williams nice! I guess we are on the front edge of the sport. Haha
I’ve been doing the same!
my favorite kayak review video yet haha
Congrats on 5k!!
Jason Martinez stoked!!!
I have been subbed for some time now my kayak has just broken but at least I can watch you use yours keep up the good work.
Easy and portable, reason why I got it. Having fun so far. Rudder my next upgrade or a Graph can't decide.
Great review and so refreshing to see such raw honesty. You sold me! Thank you

If you decide to get the rudder later is it easy to install?
Great vid Dan!!! Thanks for doing all you do, even taking a swim😬😬😬

That seat looks super comfy
This is definitely my top 1 for this year buying. Ill be fishing in the keys and in the flats in biscayne bay FL. Im in it for the stability mainly
was it good for fishing at the keys

Love the testimony on how stable that yak is ,just before you flipped it over !!! I’m still laughing out loud Anyway not picking on ya it’s humorous I got a big fish 120 after watching you’re review so I ain’t scared , first run was in the Gulf of Mexico off Anna Maria island and it was rough whitecaps and strong currents, wind ,waves and it handled it all but I won’t do that again it was too hard to paddle , looking forward to some smooth lazy water and my new trolling motor!!!
Please review the brooklyn kayak company ra 220. Under $800 with a rudder. Is it junk?
Love the channel. Lots of good information. Only thing is I wish I lived closer to your shop lol.
Great review Dan....keep the videos coming.
I’d really like to know if you had to pick the Big Fish 120 vs the Crescent Lite Tackle, for a 250lb male, versatility for ponds, lakes, rivers, or some coastal water, which direction you would go. A comparison video would be awesome.
Awesome review! This yak is big time on my radar, looks similar to Cabela’s kayak
You are the best from Englewood Florida
If you were going to put a trolling motor on this kayak what one would you choose
I’d get a Yak Gadget pod mount and a simple Minn Kota setup. Clean and easy. Or a Newport Vessle.
I am interested in the 120 for creek fishing here in myrtle beach, SC . I like the width and hoping the extra length will.make it faster ?
Richard Brown yes the 120 is faster. I like it much better.
How do you keep the rudder in the up position for transporting?
It has a cleat that holds a line
Awesome so happy for you
I like my 3 Waters kayak.
FishingVirginia where in va did you get ur 105 from. Can’t seem to find them
I ordered my kayak through ack.com. They did a great job protecting the kayak for shipping. The delivery guy was great. He helped me unwrap the kayak and helped me inspect it.
Roughly how long did it take to arrive
Five days.
You probably just need to seal the grommet on the front of the pod. I have 2 batteries in mine and have never had any water get in there. Even when I flipped mine, it was completely dry inside.
I'm trying to decide between getting the Big Fish 120 or the Feelfree Lure 11.5
Eric Dodge the Lure has some distinct upgrades like wheel in the keel, inside storage, foam standing platform, upgradable to pedals. With that said if I only had $1300 to spend on a yak I’d buy the $999 big fish and a $300 Paddle. If the Lure and a nice paddle are in your budget spring for the Lure. Both boats need a Rudder IMO. So factor another $200 in for that.
Thanks Dan. i think I'm leaning a little more towards the Lure. Probably just need to go take another look at it
Can you do a comparison with the 120 and 105 big fish
Thanks for being real.... great review!
Can you put a Peddle Drive in the hole where the Sonar Pod is?
What size paddle do you recommend for this width of kayak?
New to Kayaking and loving your channel, with that type of hull I know it adds stability but my how does it track when going straight, how easy is it for manuverability when turning and how much does it get pushed by wind, waves. Thanks!!
Looking at either the feel free lure 10 or the big fish 105. The seat is my deciding factor. Which is more comfortable. I about 180lbs and 5ft 10
Lure for sure.
I just got this kayak has anyone had problems with water coming in the scupper holes under the deck?
Good video. Funny when you fell in. I'm no pro or expert but with the height of the seat that paddle seems a bit short.?
Mark Price nah just a high angle stroke. Paddle is a 250 which is just right for me.
Just curious would the feelfree overdrive system work with this kayak? The sonar pod seems similar and they are made by the same company, it would be cool if it did fit would be like a baby Dorado for half the price.
How high is the seat off the deck in the high position on this kayak?
So how does it compare to the Pelican Catch?
J KillerB2u similar just way better plastic. The pelicans are sheet formed which creates inconsistencies in the plastic when pressed into the mold. Rotomolding is far stouter although a bit heavier. Also the ability to have a rudder is a definite plus.
Thanks Brother 🙏🏻
I have been looking for a sit on top fishing kayak for a while now, and had pretty much narrowed it down the Field and Stream Shadow Caster 12'3". Then I found this channel and now I have ALLLL KINDS of options! (Thanks a lot!! haha). Is there any comparison you would be able to provide between the Big Fish and the Shadow Caster?
What's the diffrence between 105vand 120 ???
Does this yak have the wheel in the keel?
What kayak would you suggest up here in Oregon
Is the big fish 105 stability comparable to the lure 11.5 for standing
fergy fun yes
Does the kayak have any hull access of you wanna mount lights?
No
Headwaters Kayak that’s a deal breaker. Thanks.
Can I take this big Fishing 120 12 ft to saltwater fishing ???
Nice boat. When are u gonna do an on water review of the Bonafide?
I see this video is 3 years old. How do you like it so far? I noticed you said you could add a rudder. So I assume no rudder from the factory?
How would 12 footer work out for a shorty like me 5' 4" 145 lbs? I was looking at the 12'
If your that small get a smaller better paddling kayak.
Would this be a good kayak for hunting in swamps with gear and maybe hauling out a deer ?
Probably. Never done that.
Love your video just can’t afford those kayaks YET
I found one used for $500. Great shape. I love it after a small learning curve. I lower my seat to paddle, raise it to fish.
Can you do a video of how to install the rudder?
Nate Meadows not really something I would do for the channel. There are several out there. It’s a incredibly easy install on the 105.
Headwaters Kayak 👍
These short fishing kayaks seem to be the thing now, darn heavy for a 10 footer at 89 lbs though.
Great vid ... great review. Annoyed that I bought the Lure 10 before seeing this. I'm 6' and 250 but space constraints limited me to the 10 footer. How similar are the two with regards to stability? Will I see similar results with the Lure? Great content though - subscribed.
Ben A it’s been a while since I’ve paddled the 10. Should be similar. Let us know in the comments.
Ben A
I have had the Lure 10 for over a year now and I am 6ft and weigh 249..

Eugene Orr faster for sure by a long shot.
How would you rank standability and standing stability as you are fishing? I have the moken 10 v2. How do these two compare?
Between the big fish 105, Big fish 120 and the Jonny bass 100, which is the most stable?
Big fish 120
I haven't received my Christmas kayak yet???
I absolutely love everything about this one, EXCEPT that it seems slow, and you confirmed it. would the 12' be any faster with a rudder? or what is comparable to this but has more speed?
12 has much better speed. 10' kayaks are just slow. Especially when they are that wide.
@@HeadwatersKayak thank you so much for the quick reply! I was on the fence between this one and the pescador pro. do you know if the pescador would be faster than the big fish? if also be curious to hear any other thoughts you have
What you gain and speed you lose and stability.
Hi Dan,
Great videos, very informative
I'm looking to buy a new peddle kayak and I am going to be using it mostly in harbors, Newport and Huntington and lakes as well, maybe a little inshore also.
I am 6ft tall and 275
What would you recommend. I would really appreciate your help.
Rocky Feathers big fish 108 is coming out in October. That could be a perfect fit.
Thanks Dan
Really appreciate your input.
Okay I'm a newbie to this so what is the purpose of this rudder upgrade you keep referring to and what is it's function relating to the kayak itself since this isn't a pedal driven boat ?
Jeffrey Elliott to control direction with your feet and to track in a straight line.
Is that the V1 or the V2. thank you
V-1 new one has a better seat.
