All the EA Big games need to come back, especially SSX. I hope SEGA bringing back all their classics will be a success that drives EA to do the same. We need SSX, Burnout, all the Street games and Def Jam to come back.
Def Jam Fight for NY Is to this day still my favorite fighting game ever made. Was deep into hip hop in my teens, and that game right there was THE sleepover game to be playing with your mate at his house at 3am, eating cold pizza and pounding energy drinks.
If you haven’t seen Spirited Away - that’s the one bro, it’s amazing. A beautiful story and stunning animation. I have it tattooed on my arm, I think it’s one of the greatest animations of all time.
My favorite is Porco Rosso, but this was going to be my suggestion too. It's a good transition from Princess Mononoke too with a lot of spiritual elements.
I agree on the animation, top tier, but that story is so nonsensical that you're left wondering what you just watched. Howl's Moving Castle had the same problem. It's a shame too 'cause that was another one that was gorgeous.
I've been playing a lot of SSX Tricky and NBA Street Vol. 2 through my Gamecube emulator. That whole era of gaming was absolutely awesome, and I miss it more than words can possibly describe. Trying to explain it to the younger gamers now makes us sound like our parents describing how candy and everything else was so much better back in the day. (And cheaper too)

RE: Miyazaki films. Spirited away is a must see, ridiculously influential and culturally significant. It's also just a fabulous film from start to finish in every aspect. My neighbor Totoro as well is another masterpiece. I'm no expert by any means, but I think those 2, plus Mononoke, are really the best starting point. If you can find them in a theater near you that would be ideal, I've been off long island for awhile so I dont even know where to look anymore for anime and older films up there. Love your videos, happy holidays! Can't wait to see what the FPS podcast has in store for 2024.

Any film he has directed is gold. So i'd say, watch em all. First one you come across, hit play and i promise you a good time.
@@SalKhayer Not directed by Miyazaki. That being said, it too is an Amazing film. That famous reviewer dude everyone in America loves called it one of the greatest war movies ever made or something.
For vibes alone I recommend My Neighbor Totoro. There's a larger story about grief and processing childhood but Totoro becomes this beautifully fun symbol of childhood wonder helping kids through dark times. For creators, I highly recommend Kiki's Delivery Service. Immaculate vibes and it deals with uncertainty and burnout in a great way all whilst being charming. My favorite is Spirited Away. It transports you to a completely new world and makes you fall in love with that world as much as the characters within it. But honestly, go watch The Boy and the Heron in theaters.
For Miyazaki movies these are must watch: spirited away, my neighbour totoro, howl's moving castle, nausicaa and the valley of the wind, princes mononoke. But honestly, all of them are amazing.

You mentioning SSX Tricky brought back so many great games. Plus there were so many amazing PC games that I've forgotten the names of that you'd stumble on randomly. You'd get them in these magazine CDs with demos etc. that your cousin or a friend would bring over.
The Miyazaki movie you need to watch is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, solely due to the story behind the movie itself. When it was brought over to America in the 80s, we tried to make it more marketable. That involved changing the name to Warriors of the Wind, making the poster/cover art feature characters and items that didn't exist in movies (I'm talking lightsabers, Pegasus. It's absurd.) And chopping about 20 minutes of important world building from the movie. Miyazaki was so upset that he refused to work on the IP ever again. Which is a shame because the movie covers about 1/5 of the manga. Thankfully we did finally put the movie back together, and it's terrific, with an incredible soundtrack. I highly recommend it.
studio ghibli must see list IMO: Howl's Moving castle, Laputa Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away and Boy and the Heron, not Miyazaki directed but Whispers of the Heart is also one of my absolute favourite movies
My buddies and I have this conversation at least twice a month when we play online lol our fav games growing up were nba street vol 2 and nfl street 1-2. We LIVED off those during grade school.
'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' was the first Miyazaki movie I saw and still one of my favorites. It's older and a little different from his usual stuff, bit of a post-apocalyptic vision going on. Very cool stuff.
Just wondering what’s your thoughts on dragons dogma 2 is. IGN has put out a lot of stuff on it recently and I think it looks pretty good. I love that there is minimal fast travel and minimal icons on the map and during gameplay. Also the gameplays looks very solid.
Riders Republic for sure scratches that xTrEeM SpOrTs itch whether it’s snowboarding, bmx, mountain biking and now skateboarding. Arcady, goofy and easy to pick up for a quick adrenaline hit or a chill cruise the backcountry throwing yourself off some cliffs

Hey Jake, I wanna know more about some of the stuff you watch on youtube, been looking for more people with your passion for games. Also I love all you do and have been watching since like ur early gameranx days, keep up the good work my man
For studio ghibli Spirited Away, Kiki’s delivery service, and Howls Moving Castle are a must watch for me. Ponyo, Arrietty, and When Marnie was There are really good too if you can find the time to check them out.
🎵Ponyo, ponyo, ponyo, saka na no ko 🎵 Ponyo is so cozy! I loved 'The Boy and the Heron', such a trippy movie, excellent music. 'Grave of the Fireflies' is a big one for me. It is one of the saddest movies I ever saw. 'The Wind Rises' Romantic and sad but in a maturing, moving on kind of way. Coming to terms with life and its hardships i guess. It just feels so real. But i guess all the Studio Ghibli movies do. I can't really put my finger on it, they're just raw and curious. They are so spectacular yet so ordinary. They're very good at capturing those moments in between when life happens. Where you just exist for a moment, in silence. Pondering, maybe the why of our existence, maybe nothing, just being.
Hey Jake, I am surprised you haven't made a Alan Wake 2 video here. I really enjoy your non-review spoilery talks about the games you really like and Alan Wake 2 has been my most anticipated video.
Princess Mononoke is one of the greatest! Try The Secret World of Arrietty, it's great. Maybe not one of the most well known. For vibes go to Whisper of the Heart. Great video as always and happy new year!
NBA street was my favorite game ever! Had a cool story with the bosses and then unlocking the characters. Up to vol 3. I spent hundreds of hours on them.
If you liked Princess Mononoke, then the next film of his you should watch is Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind. It's sort of the sci-fi Mononoke, as well as being a much earlier work so you'll get a sense of progression of his style. From there, the ones everyone recommends: Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle. I mean, all his movies are great. But Nausicaa has that special feeling that Mononoke does.
Princess Mononoke is definitely my favourite so in my opinion you've definitely started with the best. Spirited Away, Tales from Earthsea, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and My Neighbor Totoro are also really good!
Mononoke Hime is a story about man’s greed and destruction vs nature. This was one of the movies that made me an ecological conservationist, I’m sure you also enjoyed Ferngully and generally agree with Avalanche in FF7. Watch Nausicaa for the next Miyazaki movie. Grave of Fireflies is about post WWII life that made me cry. Spirited Away is about human overconsumption. If you want Childlike fantasy, Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki movies, seem to span audiences between 10-90 years old
Hi jake bit of a weird question but do u think the rise of online game marletplaces has lead to a dip in creativity for videogame covers in the modern day? It seems to me that a lot of older games had crazy box art because they had to grab ur attention in the store but they dont really have to do that nowadays as much in my opinion
That’s actually a really good point also do you remember steel books feel like we don’t get any of them anymore, I think more companies are gonna follow trend with Alan wake 2 and bg3 especially in at least bg3’s case it sold boat loads and didn’t have any physical copies 🤷♂️
@@okok8061 i thinks theres a few steelbooks out there but only in a ew deluxe editions and that. Its sad really but i guess if it cuts costs then companies might got the same way as bg3 and aw2
my favorite miyazaki movie is grave of the fireflies. it is set in post ww2 japan but the aesthethic and vibes for me really are amazing. its like dark souls in a way, its really off beat for miyazaki since he usually is wholesome but its a great story about how unforgiving the world can be
My favorite Miyazaki films are - Nausicaa of the valley of the wind (so many big ideas and a killer soundtrack) - howls moving castle (amazing characters and a lot of subverted expectations) - princess mononoke (Shinto vibes remind me of Zelda) Also just watch spirited away, but Nausicaa is incredible
Hey Jake, these videos are all great. I think you gave great advice without being too over-optimisitic about taking it one step at a time, but to start creating if you want to get in to a video game field. I also think that a lot of Ghibli movies would keep your attention, but particularly for you, 'Howl's Moving Castle' might be THE one. It's pacing and story match a lot of your tastes, but at the same time, quality wise and story wise it's steps above its contemporaries and really completely unique in a lot of story areas as well, all while having that perfect Ghibli quality animation and visuals to it.
Did you ever give your opinion on Bomb rush Cyberfunk? feel like that game flew under the radar for many, and it didn't really get the attention it deserved
If you're someone who prefers a more traditional, linear story, then I really recommend Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. A lot of Ghibli films can be very free-form and fever dreamish. Nausicaä is a nice look into how they handle the more traditional story structure with all of the fresh imagination that comes with a Ghibli film.
Hearing your answer about the Jedi Knight series made me think of another question for you! If you had to choose one: would you either want a new Kotor or Jedi Knight? It's a tough choice, but I would say kotor. And not an MMO, like a legit RPG.
Dude!! NHL Hitz! I wish they would bring that back. It was hockey with a small crew plus it was like street fighter when the fights would break out. It was so fun and I'm not a sports guy at all. But I love some good arcade style sports games with stupid fun mini games and tweaks
You gotta watch Nausicaa, it’s an older one but it’s the closest in vibes to Princess Mononoke. It definitely inspired hollow knight and even Zelda to a large extent and is really really awesome!
Q&A topic idea :D Hey Jake! Greetings from Romania! I really enjoy your style of humor and since you are living in the New York area, I was wondering for a long time what is your view on the Stand Up comedy scene. Do you enjoy it? Any favorite comedians? I'd love to hear your take on that.
If you like going to the movies I'd say catch Boy and the Heron while you can. The voice cast is amazing as well, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattison absolutely nail it
You should watch all Myazaki movies, there are like only 11 or so. Start with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and go chronology. If you don't want to do that, watch: 1. Spirited Away 2. Howl's Moving Castle 3. My Neighbor Totoro But I am rewatching them right now and they are all very good, and there is great variety.
Porco Rosso is the one I always recommend because it's probably the best at showing all sides of Miyazaki's movie making. If you like Porco Rosso you like Miyazaki. Other Miyazaki movies always try to do one thing and one thing only, which might or might not resonate with you depending on mood or expectations or tastes, whereas Porco Rosso does them all and it does them really really well. Infact, I've yet to meet someone IRL who doesn't think Porco Rosso is their favourite (if they've seen it) Source: love movies, i don't really like anime, and I've seen them all of Miyazaki
God… NBA & NFL Street (along with that BMX game where you could play as the Slim Jim guy (oh, it was Dave Mira Freestyle BMX 2), the Tony Hawks games, Waveracer, SSX, Need for Speed & Burnout, & for some reason Mia Hamm Soccer- which was way better than a N64 soccer game has any right to be) we’re basically the only sports games I ever played, but they were so sick. The soundtracks alone on NBA Street Vol. 1 & 2 were some of the best in any games ever… There are a lot of games that had some catchy hip-hop on them- usually just whatever pop-rap was on the radio at the time… But NBA Street had a really well-curated set of genuine hip-hop classics, from Golden Era (& even pre-Golden Era) bangers to some deep cuts that I would never expect to see pop up in a video game… And despite being a pretty diverse range of songs & artists, they pretty much all contributed to a very specific vibe that really set the tone for the game perfectly & gave it so much more replayability. Some of the Skate & Tony Hawks games did include some real hip-hop, but always mixed in with some mid, more recent Top 40/crunk type stuff, & a lot of pop & punk & ska & other stuff (which, no hate on other genres- I listen to all kinds of stuff- but it definitely prevents them from having that singular focus on doing a perfect hip-hop soundtrack)… Those Street games stand out in my memory because the sound they cultivated was so specific & iconic & unified around the classic late 80s to 90s hip-hop vibe, which is a lot of my favorite music of all time. The games were also just mechanically really brilliant. Fluid & fun to play, had great single-player & multiplayer modes (the one thing I miss about console gaming is sitting side by side with my brother & playing games like that, whereas PC gaming generally encourages LAN party style arrangements at best, & more often just communicating on mics at a distance. Also, the most fun thing about Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, bar none, was the multiplayer bail mode, where you would get more points the more beat up you got during a bail (so if you got hit by a train & went flying you’d get like 100,000 points), & by holding some combo of like 4-5 buttons on the GameCube controller, your character would just let go of the bike & go rag-doll instantly, & you could kind of vaguely control their body a little bit, & make them grab onto things with their hands… It was elementary with the game technology they had at the time, but it was so hilarious & janky & fun… They should include that in every skating/BMX/snowboarding game as far as I’m concerned.

Highly HIGHLY recommend Porco Roso for Ghibli movies. Really think you'd love it for the vibes alone. Make sure you watch the dub!
The main menu theme from NBA street vol. 2 will be stuck in my head forever
As an engineer, Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" is absolutely great. Check it out and see if its up your alley.
Now more than ever, we need a resurgence of 2000s culture.
There is an NBA Street vol. 3 and the Gamecube version has Mario, Luigi and Peach in it lol
Spirited away, howls moving castle and my neighbor Totoro and then ponyo. Those are the certified ghibli classics
Dude NBA jam extreme on PS1.
Big head mode, 3s from the stands.
I adored that one.
As a Dad watching Ponyo really made me appreciate anime. It was beautiful simple and my little girls loved it
my favorite miyazaki movie is grave of the fireflies. it is set in post ww2 japan but the aesthethic and vibes for me really are amazing. its like dark souls in a way, its really off beat for miyazaki since he usually is wholesome but its a great story about how unforgiving the world can be
the new one, the boy and the heron is amazingggg saw it in theaters, would definitely go pay to see it again
My favorite Miyazaki films are
- Nausicaa of the valley of the wind (so many big ideas and a killer soundtrack)
- howls moving castle (amazing characters and a lot of subverted expectations)
- princess mononoke (Shinto vibes remind me of Zelda)
Also just watch spirited away, but Nausicaa is incredible
Cause most people aren't interested in throwbacks... They want that new Unreal Engine 5 game that will never be made.
And not an MMO, like a legit RPG.
literally just asked myself this question yesterday about arcady sports games. but then again i ask myself that every day.
Dude!! NHL Hitz! I wish they would bring that back. It was hockey with a small crew plus it was like street fighter when the fights would break out. It was so fun and I'm not a sports guy at all. But I love some good arcade style sports games with stupid fun mini games and tweaks
I think NBA Street kinda had a sequel in NBA 2k Playgrounds. Haven't played it so idk if it's good.
You gotta watch Nausicaa, it’s an older one but it’s the closest in vibes to Princess Mononoke. It definitely inspired hollow knight and even Zelda to a large extent and is really really awesome!
I appreciate that Ubisoft released Steep and Rider's Republic, both cool extreme sport games
NFL blitz, wayne gretsky 3d hockey. Incredible
Q&A topic idea :D
Hey Jake!
If you don't want to do that, watch:
1. Spirited Away
2. Howl's Moving Castle
3. My Neighbor Totoro
But I am rewatching them right now and they are all very good, and there is great variety.
I still miss SSX :( I've been playing SSX 3/2012 on emulator for years now knowing they're probably not releasing another.
Spirited away, howls moving castle and my neighbor Totoro are my favorites kiki delivery service is great too
Porco Rosso is the one I always recommend because it's probably the best at showing all sides of Miyazaki's movie making.
If you like Porco Rosso you like Miyazaki. Other Miyazaki movies always try to do one thing and one thing only, which might or might not resonate with you depending on mood or expectations or tastes, whereas Porco Rosso does them all and it does them really really well. Infact, I've yet to meet someone IRL who doesn't think Porco Rosso is their favourite (if they've seen it)
Source: love movies, i don't really like anime, and I've seen them all of Miyazaki
