    I walked the Camino in 2015. I was 233 pounds and didn't prepare for tge hike. The first day was extremely difficult, I didn't think I would make it. I finished in 27 days and lost 22 pounds. I can't wait to get back out there.

      Did you walk from St Jean in 27 days? That's an incredible pace. Wow. To do it while not good shape is really incredible. I'm not one to make it a race, but I'm still impressed. Bravo.

    I started my 2021 Camino in St. Jean on October 4th and I finished in Santiago on November 16th. I was very nervous and worried starting out and this video was a big encouragement for me! Although I did some practice walks before, I also started out shipping my bag and doing only 12-13 km per day. By the end I was walking 18-23 km per day. Thank you so much for your videos! Kudos to you for being so open about how your weight affects your ability to hike and do yoga. I’m only an inch shorter than you but weigh only 140 pounds. Before Covid, I was thinking about doing the Camino this fall. I’ve been doing a lot of walking and hiking without a backpack but I’m concerned about any weight on my back since I’ve had back, shoulder, hip and knee problems for years. Now, I’m targeting the fall of 2022 for the Camino and will try to keep my backpack to 6.5kg which would be close to 10% of my bodyweight. Thanks for your encouragement and please do a yoga video.😜

    • @CaminoGuide
      @CaminoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      Ha! The yoga video would be hilarious. When I was Carrion de las Condes last week there were pilgrims doing yoga by the river and they tried to get me to join! I did not but several did who were also “yoga challenged.”
      If you have some history of back pain and you are slightly underweight, then your pack weight matters a lot. I wouldn’t go ultralight so that your pack has good support. But get your weight as low as you can…or use transport services.

    Thank you for this! Too many people have talked me out of this dream for too long. It's refreshing to find positive encouragement for folks like me, of a certain size. I've graduated to being more nervous about fitting in or squashing patio chairs on the patios of bars and cafes than finishing, but that's always a fear LOL. I've recently started training and finally get to go for my first (a portion of the Fraces) next spring. I'm the biggest I've ever been and usually only do 1-2 mile hikes, but I'm gradually increasing my distance. The advice to do two long hikes back to back seems critical, so that's what I'm working toward.

    I'm on the Camino right now. Your advice is very good. Getting the backpack weight low is especially important. I struggled the first few days with one that was 7.5 kgs. I knew it would get lighter as I used up items and got stronger. It is currently around 6 kgs, which is really perfect. I hardly feel the weight of it now. Practicing before hand would be helpful for seeing how the socks worked with shoes. My Marino wool socks were too thick and gave me blisters, whereas my thinner socks worked much better.

    • @CaminoGuide
      @CaminoGuide  3 роки тому +2

      Shoes and socks are so incredibly personal. I know that I must have medium cushion merino or I get blisters with every other combination. I think testing these things are the best reason to “train.”

      @sneaker’scorner with a pack that light, I’m wondering if you are on the slim of plus size? I’m imagining that plus size folks gear is also heavier…

    • @Speakers154
      @Speakers154 3 роки тому +2

      @@msullivan7836 I'm about 85kgs, at a height of 5ft 10, so I'm slightly overweight. Ideally, I ought to be about 75kgs. One trick to get the pack weight down is to be strategic when it comes to toiletries. I use a liquid soap, Dr Bronners, that I use as my shampoo, shower gel and clothes washing liquid, I use the peppermint one which is especially pleasant. It weighs 240g when full. It is down to about 180gs now. I use a 20g toothpaste. I use a special Indian antideodorant bar that weights less than 100 g and will practically last forever. It rubs antibacterial salts on your body that keeps you fresh as a daisy. I also had a 50g hand wash, now down to about 25g. I carried a small tissue pack which I haven't replaced as toilets are rarely without toilet paper so is unnecessary. I didn't bring a jacket or pullover, but use my rainjacket and an extra t-shirt when cold. I overpacked socks, bringing 4 pairs but it turned out to be handy as I can switch to a dry pair during the day to avoid chaffing. I brought 3 pairs of underwear, which included the one I was wearing and 2 spares. Two Marino wool t-shirts and one long sleeved ultralight top. Hope that helps.

    I did Everest Base Camp trek and here was my perspective. You have daylight from 6am until 6.30pm so use it. Is a trek about indoor life or outdoor life? If I'm not last, I'm going too fast. I started that trek at 117kg (257 lbs) and finished 104kg (229 lbs), a loss of 13kg (28 lbs). I'm so looking forward to my Camino as weight loss is a huge motivator. Inclines are brutal so if you can train on stairs or steps, do it. If you can lose a couple of pounds, lose it. If you can save weight in your pack, save it. Every incremental help is so useful. Drink plenty of water.

    I'm 61 years old, 5'9" and 145 lbs and I am currently living in Medellin, Colombia at 5000'+ elevation. My question is what is a typical daily walk and at what pace. I walk about 4+ miles every day taking about an hour to do this is at about 4 mph. On the Camino is it typical to walk an hour rest a few minutes and then walk another hour? What would be typical for the day, to walk from like 6:30AM till 2 or 3PM? I plan on going on Camino next Spring and wanted to be as prepared as possible.

    • @CaminoGuide
      @CaminoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      Robert, there isn't a set rule here. For me, if it is not a super hot day then I would get up around 7:00 and walk until about 2:00. If you have 7 hours of walking, you can assume that you will have at least 1 to 1.5 hours of breaks for lunch, water, bathroom, etc. I walk about 3.5 mph at home on practice hikes. On Camino I am lucky to get the 3 mph. It is hard to keep your pace for hour after hour. So 6 walking hours at 3 mph is 18 miles.
      There are some pilgrims who average about 13 miles/day. I'd say something like 16-18 miles is more typical. The group that I walked with this summer were averaging over 18 miles per day and some days were topping 22. But you can do anything you want, as there are albergues to stop very 6 miles or so for most of the trail.
      In short, I think you are already prepared physically. I would get out there and do two very long days (12-14 miles) on two days in a row. That will give you a good sense of what Camino is like.

    • @troyanthonymorris
      @troyanthonymorris 3 роки тому +3

      On the Camino, you can walk as far as you like. I met with people who were only able to do 5kms a day. The main concern is the weight of your pack, and the weight of your footwear. The camino is not like an ordinary hard hike. It's a modern day easy walk. Trail-runners, runners, sandals are fine. The entire pack from 6kg up, but less than 9kg.
