  • The central government this week identified 30 minerals it considers critical for India. These range from the fertilisers, phosphorus and potash, to lithium & cobalt, which form the lynchpins of the world’s bid to adopt EVs and move away from fossil fuels. In episode 1261 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta breaks down this development & its importance in the current geopolitical context, in light of China’s scramble for primacy and the formation of the US-led Minerals Security Partnership.

Congratulations to Print for bringing out this topic. Material is very important for any country and India. Materials can be classified into- 1. Minerals and metals, 2. Energy materials, 3. Rare earth materials and nano materials and 4. Agriculture materials both food and non food.
I will appreciate if Print brings out an issue considering all materials.

Pranabda, just like his retro tax also wrote our most regressive mining laws. He helped make illegal mining a permanent feature of our economy. Such wonderful Ministers, most competent.

We have allocated USD 5 Billion for 5 years for National Research foundation that's USD 1 Billion/year. Given our PPP that's close to $8-9 Billion/year, that's 1/5th US Research budget (roughly adjusted to PPP). Wish it was higher but nonetheless, this is a good amount of money and more importantly, it's stable funding for Research and isn't subject to annual swings. More sustainable than whatever we have at the moment. Now I wish with iCET, Govt also improves ease of importing material and instruments and reduces the paperwork.

It would be useful to know in terms of criticality / quantity which minerals are important for india and the early exploration success of minerals as an export opportunity .
For eg both phosphate and potash have been imported for years and both quantity / quality from Jordan / Morocco cannot be matched . Same way the list should be granularly addressed to assess opportunity for sourcing efficiently domestically / globally .
Look forward to the next episode on this . 👍

With the help of external forces we managed to shutdown the largest copper smelting plant in India. NGOs will instigate locals to agitate against exploration and mining. Abundant external support is available. Look at the fate of the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). Initially it was planned at Singara in Nilgiris. It was moved to Theni because of protesting NGOs. Here also the local people are mislead into agitation by NGOs. Work would have already started to put brakes on the government exploration projects.

Thorium doesn't appear in the list. I remember being taught in school- 50 years ago- that Thorium is a valuable rare earth and India has large deposits of the same. Has Thorium lost its relevance?

Rare earth minerals are important enough .. but where is Thorium ? Thorium based fast breeder reactor tech could be our ticket to energy independence in case Russia flips and decides to pressure China with EU countries. We have lots of monazite but the reactors are .. missing in action, to put it mildly.

@@jishudas7099 Lmao chacha, you have too much confidence in the competence of our IT dept babus & banks. Not to mention the fact that even if they do the refund fairly, govt. will hoard onto my capital interest-free for a year, money I could have used in that period for more spending/investment/savings. 20% TCS makes absolutely 0 sense, especially for salaried people who anyway pay advance tax via TDS, since govt. can easily track these transactions.
I personally feel Modi is the lesser of all evils from the realistic options we have in 2024, but he's been nothing but an utter nightmare for middle & upper middle classes from an economic/fiscal standpoint. Anyway, karte ho bhakti boomer chacha

One question raises again and again whenever a discussion on minerals crops up.
Most of the mineral deposit areas lie in tribal belts.
Other concerns are the effects of mining on ecological and environmental.
So what effect would it have on people and earth, and how does the Govt propose to overcome these problems?.
questions are not the exclusive prerogative of NGOs or the left intellectuals or the decimated socialists fighting their last battle for oxygen.
However , the concerns related to development and national security can not be obviously ignored.
It is learned from media reports that Bolivia has signed deals with Russia and China for lithium.
