Im still using my Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 AMD with ryzen 5 4500u and 8gigs of ram. i was considering a dell XPS for university, but honestly this E14 gen 5 seems pretty good. So glad these newer ThinkPads are still easily upgradeable!
I have got 47 WHR AMD 7530 16 GB version, real time usage is 5 Hours on Battery Saving Mode, 4 Hours on power mode. But apart from the dismal battery (which could be better with Win 10) for this particular SKU, this is an absolute banger at the price (58K INR) considering this is a Thinkpad! Fantastic form factor- comparable to the compact and lighter L and T series from a generation prior. Unfortunately in India, the Lenovo Customize option translates a similar spec + 57 WHR battery but to a much increased 20K price (almost 40% jump). Lastly, the new Keyboard is 90% as good as the older one (my work laptop), I use both simultaneously and there isn't much of difference you'll feel.
I recently just purchased it the same model you described, unfortunately couldnt find the 57whr. I will be happy with 5/4hours for the price I got it for. It will be my first thinkpad laptop and I am excited to use it for my studies in engineering. Might upgrade the ram or battery later if I need more battery or space. I just need it for 2-3yrs hopefully it will last that long.
@samikadhikari6413 this laptop is presently available on Amazon (ryzen 3 7000 series, 47 Whr battery) at INR 45000. I was planning to buy it during the sale on 23rd September. I wanted a lightweight, durable laptop with great battery life. The Amazon post states battery life of 12.38 hours. I would only be using for 4-5 hours of ms office work ( ppt/ excel / word documents) and two hour browsing. Wanted your honest opinion whether it will give 8 hour battery back. Please Answer as it will help me take a decision. If it is less than 8 hours then I won't purchase it.
@@amitb8206 The 47 hr battery option only lasts 4 hours continuous power use on normal settings, screen brightness 90% as it is a dim screen by default. However using Battery Saver I'm getting around 6 hrs. On gaming mode it lasts around 1-2 hrs even on battery more as the power draw is very less which is impressive. I'd suggest you go with the Ryzen 7530U instead as it is a significant performance bump. This is a ThinkPad after all and surprisingly priced low and designed very well in the times of overpriced silicon. So we'll worth the money you are paying.

My usecase for this is coding in college and some light media consumption. I'd be having a gaming pc at home. The 5800hs laptop in mind is a vivobook 16x. Also, is there a newer alternative which you'd recommend or this is the best in that 500 price range? Thanks.
Assetto Corsa - constant 60 fps on High Settings, on battery only it dips but only slightly as the TDP draw is already low. But happy I could play AC on this and attaching a secondary screen so smoothly. Now hoping the legendary keyboard holds up to hours of racing 😜
Observation on the Ryzen 7 Model in India : Although it has more cores and almost double the gaming (FPS) performance, it is about 28K INR more in price which is 50% jump. At that point we reach base level gaming machines or ultraportables and not worth the price. Unless you are a ThinkPad fan like me 😃

One of the comments said 5hr battery life on battery saving mode.. Why even get a laptop if you can watch one movie and some yotube and your battery is depleted? Is that everyones experience with this model? if they claim 12 hour battery but in your test you said watching youtube would get you 7 hrs.. Thats a massive difference between 12 and 7 and it appears that people actually using the laptop rather than just letting it stream a video get 5 hrs. Hi! I'm considering buying one of these - ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 (Intel) or ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 (Intel). I'll be using the laptop for basic stuff - Excel, internet, video etc. I want a good typing experience. I've used E14 in the past and have been very satisfied with its keyboard layout. Don't know how typing on a 16 inch E series feels like (because of the number pad). Which of the two offers a better typing experience? Overall, which one do you recommend?

I'm planning to replace my yoga slim 7 (4500U/8GB) with this E14 since it sounds like even though it's supposed to be budget model it doesn't lack a lot compared to the T14S i5-1345u and other more expensive models I was considering initially, plus I'm not a big fan of intel cpus on laptops either and sadly most models available here are intel-based. Unfortunately 6 cores is not enough for my current software development activities, so I'm wondering if the 7530u is actually an upgrade (12 threads compared to 6) or I should just go with the 7730u. It's about 95 CAD more expensive here which I don't mind investing, but I'm also wondering if the single fan is enough to cool it. Should I be worried about any kind of throttling? And more importantly, does the letter "i" on the cover still light up?
The cooling on the laptop will be adequate for both the ryzen 5 and 7. The 7 is a performance uplift for your workflow, so it might be worth the investment. The 7730u will outperform a 1345u in real world tasks
I grabbed a new E14 Gen 5 with AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD for $600. I've used an X220, X240, and X280 but wanted something more affordable than the X or T series for my graduate school studies. How’s the battery??? I Will join university this year…i am thinking of light weight laptop instead of a chunky heavy gaming laptop…but i want that powerful cpu and gpu since i like games…but i hate heavy weight laptops. What would you recommend???
I found this machine at ca$1044. Fron where you got it at ca$500 ??
From Lenovo on sale
what do you think about the intel version? why did you choose amd
Amd has better battery life and iGPU. And typically better performance per watt. And costs less. I’m not a fan of intel laptop CPUs.
thank you for your answer@@TechGuyBeau
@@TechGuyBeau i3 1315u is better in benchmarks?
i found one I could afford with AMD ryzen 7 7730U with 16GB of ram and 512 ssd? Is it worth it
Depends on the price, but the specs look good
Which one you prefer? E14 or e16?
Lol in my country the previous Gen 4 is like 1192$ and Gen5 is not present :) Imagine the rip off. I will never buy this shitbox ever. Never buy E series.
Only if the price is low. Here it was super cheap, but if the cost is equal to a t series get that
AMD or Intel please give me your opinion, and 14 or 16 inch?
I prefer AMD laptops, especially where battery is concern. Intel is making good changes with the core ultra, but that’s not on the e-series thinkpads yet.
Size is your call. If you travel a lot, 14. If not 16 is great

i found an e14 with 11th gen i5 for just 294 usd
and i wanna ask for your opinion of this whether or not it is a bargain for a beginner engineering laptop or not? or should i just opt for the amd version of it
thank you
Could you share the link for the RAM you upgraded with. Thanks in advance.
Hey, it uses ddr4 for sodimm memory. I have some on my Amazon storefront that I used in this laptop :)
The links to those are in my bio if curious. I don’t youtube will let me share an actual link in the comments
I will never buy a laptop with soldered RAM 😊. But it’s great video. Thank you for sharing ❤
Half soldered half sodimm fyi
In my country, it is one of the few good laptops that allow 1 RAM slot, 1 SSD slot to be upgradeable.
@@samikadhikari6413 nice. Hopefully the price is good there. The laptop is good overall for the price I paid
@@TechGuyBeau yes about 58k INR or 700 USD launch price, latest gen processor.. This is amazing considering the govt recently increased taxes on laptops and prices for even basic laptops have been on the higher since 2021 even after discounts. Older gens of E14 are actually more expensive here.
can this computer support 4K,60hz output of monitor ? using the usb3.2 gen2 port , can do ?
Yes
I am trying to buy this but it is significantly more expensive now. 700USD
Are you buying in the USA? You can probably get some coupons and such if so. Try using edge browser, I find it auto populates coupons
@@TechGuyBeau Coupons are applied already. You cannot get this laptop for the price you mentioned unless there is a sales promotion going on. Kinda important to mention that! I think Gen 6 is around the corner anyway.
can you give some update about the battery life, typically how long it will last for daily use (coding, browsing etc)
For basic use you will get 5-7 hours. Depends how bloated windows is
Good value laptop, but I hate that lip on the bezel with the webcam.
Can i upgrade to 40GB RAM? Like 8GB onboard and 32GB RAM?
Theoretically yes. But I haven’t tested that on this model. Might want to check with Lenovo directly

Thanks for the video! I am not able to find any Thinkpad laptop for CAD $500. The very base E series now starts at CAD $800 and by the time that a 16 gb ram 512gb storage added the price passes $1,000.
Don’t want to do the updates through Lenovo itself. Because they often charge a lot for them. Only do it if it’s cheaper than doing it herself. As for the laptop they go on sale quite a bit, so you need to just keep checking
Where are you buying this for 400 USD??
From the Lenovo website directly
@@TechGuyBeau Thanks! I tried, but it won’t go lower than approx USD 880 (vat included) I’m located in Denmark
Keyboard light is there or not
You can add it or not. It’s appx $10-15 to add backlight
Very helpful video. Might grab this one as my go to programming laptop.
If I add a 32 GB RAM in the free slot, will it work as dual channel memory?
Dual channel only applies to a matching pair.
So let’s say 8gb on the board and you added 8. All 16 is dual.
Let’s say you added 16, then 8+8 run dual channel. The additional 8gb runs single
Can you test a whole bunch of games on legion slim 7 2023 with rtx 4060? I was thinking to buy it
😈 already in the works my man.
Where is the best L series? Or E series
I find them pretty equal. It’s more about the specs themselves
You did’t show how to open it?
If you will use linux dont buy it. Black screen after suspended mode on ubuntu, went for warranty and came back with the same problem. Reseting drivers and BIOS doesnt work too, beeps the code 0288 which is a computer display error. Trying to get a refund, it seems to be a common issue with these Lenovos and as far as I know, happens in the previous gens too.
Mine is running just fine on Fedora 39. No problems...
It is probably an issue with Ubuntu or I´m very unlucky. I will try other distros when it comes back from warranty (couldn't get a refund...)
Software cannot damage hardware
@@jarod3371 It technically can, but only in very specific circumstances. Installing a Linux distro isn't one of them, however.
Fedora 39 works great on ThinkPad E16 Gen 1. However, the fingerprint reader is not in the Linux kernel so skip that.
What is the battery size of this model - 47 whr or 57 whr please?
Shown in the tear down. 57wh
Is the keyboard backlit?
You can chose it when building. I chose not to, but it’s about $20 to add backlighting
Great video! Would you recommend this laptop for someone who needs to work with large datasets in excel?
Sure it will be fine for that
is it good for virtual box?
With enough RAM yes
Is it good for computer engineer ?
I’d recommend the 2024 model. The CPU is much more capable

Is it good? I think that the only problem is that the screen is just HD, not Full HD and it's 60hz not 120hz
@TechGuyBeau you mentioned it was hard to get into base cover. Any tips for first timers?
Just take a plastic guitar pick thing. Find a corner to slide it into and slowly work your way around Until all the clips release. You need to be firm but controlled. You won’t damaged any internals but you could break off a clip. No the end of the world as is screws on anyways

Should I spend an extra 300€ to get the t14 Gen 4 instead of the e14 Gen 5? The main differences are that the t14 has better color quality (100% sRGB vs. 45% NTSC), more storage (1TB vs. 500GB), and is lighter (1.3kg vs. 1.6kg). Is the extra cost worth it for these differences?

Lenovo has almost random sales and coupons. Get a coupon app as it helps a lot with trying them.

Thanks for the review. i'm still on the fence whether to get this or the ThinkBook g5... 🤔
How much is the thinkpad and the Thinkbook in your region, and what are the specs?
@@TechGuyBeau so I can get both the ThinkBook 14 G5 and ThinkPad E14 G5 pre-specced by lenovo with a 7530u and 16gb ram. Only difference is the ThinkPad is around 80000 yen and the ThinkBook is around 75000 yen. For some reason these "pre-specced" variants are cheaper than the base model that you could customize here in Japan
I am thinking either E14 Gen5 or T14 Gen1. Anyone in the comments to point me in the right direction. Both are availible right now for around $1000 where I live, so i'd consider that the budget. Is there any other laptops I may have overlooked that would be a better deal?
what about the lenovo slim 7 pro with 3050 6gb and 7840hs? how much is that
@TechGuyBeau Sadly can't seem to find it in stores. Closest to that one in terms of specs is the 6800HS RTX3050 sold by private sellers. Price is between 1600-1800 euros which is around $1650-1900
I'm looking into buying a laptop for school and the E14 seems pretty convincing. From what I can gather, this should also be able to handle some comfy indie/retro gaming on my train commute, right? Either way, thanks for the review!
