Make sure you've watched the previous video's in the series to get the supporting information: • Substance Academy Seri...

Note: at 13.55 a small error is mentioned: it should be Overlay that is good for modulating roughness, not AddSub.

If you stop the video before he set each blend mode on the blend nodes, after he says what he is planning to do, you actually have yourself a nice quiz to test your knowledge :D Also, the modeling analogy to boolean operations finally made click on me on how to utilize blending modes for height map creation. Also, I finally understood how to break up mask transitions, something I always struggled with in designer. AddSub is ma man !!!

03:46 What.. I've been using designer for quite a while and didn't knew that one can swap inputs by pressing X 🤯

Until I watched this series, I think I did not realize what a crucial part the blend modes play in Substance Designer, especially for heightmap creation. I always thought that blend modes would be more of a cosmetic thing, but in Designer, they really play an important role when creating your basic height, normal and AO information. This really closed a gap of knowledge for me. Thanks very much. You don't come across such information from watching graph creation videos alone I guess. At least it never clicked for me the way it did now.

Thanks for these very helpful insights. At 13:55 there was an irritating mistake in the explanation, I believe. When he starts to talk about modulating the roughness channel, when he says "an excellent way to use ADD/SUB..", he meant to say "..an excellent way to use OVERLAY". overlay is then what is shown for modulating roughness.

Hi Christian, thanks for the reply. You are right, I misspoke and failed to catch that one. I can't add any more cards to the video (the limit is 5), so I corrected it in the description. I hope things are clear apart from that little error.
