(Saying this as a Black person): "Female" as an adjective/description is fine, in the same way that saying "Black" as an adjective/description is fine - "Female rapper," "Black person." Referring to women as "females" as a noun sounds as odd and dehumanizing as referring to Black people as "Blacks." That kind of detached language is usually reserved for scientific contexts where it's crucial to distinguish the biological sex of a species, as in "males or females of this species [female lions, female plants, etc.]." I agree with the comment Ethan read on the show earlier: most men do not refer to each other as "males" because we have a word for "human males" called "men"...and the same applies to women. However, incels and misogynistic men were the first people to start referring to women as "females" out of spite, as if we're not even of the same species, ie not human/subhuman.
@C Thank you, someone finally said it!! This is why I think white people should say the n word again! They said it for hundreds of years and what all of a sudden people expect language to change?? How am I supposed to ask, "Whose your favorite N-word artist?" Thanks to PC culture gate keeping using language all of a sudden it's "respectful" to treat them differently. I've been telling people this for years, go out and know your neighbors, for example knowing what they would like to be called, and then calling them whatever you want because it's your language. Everyone know it is impossible for language to be used in hateful and dehumanizing ways. Just look at Joseoh Geobbels, famous in history for using language to normalize treating people how they should be treated. Smart minds like you and Geobbels are what the world needs, people who care so much about their neighbors that if their neighbors say "hey that hurts me and has been historically used to incite violence" you can completely ignore it and tell them asking for this level of dignity is equal to putting dog poop on doors. Keep up the good work, knowing your neighbors is the first step in figuring out how to dehumanize them! Caring for your neighbors though?? We don't need that PC garbage in the world anymore, makes me sick.
exactly, it all comes down to context, tone and intent. Throwing away the word isn't helpful, just be mindful of when and how you use it. I also think the main point was that "females" in those contexts are used practically deliberately to separate men from women as if women were a whole different species.

Unfortunately I think this kind of reaction is common in society as whole. People tend to overcompensate regarding issues like this. Rather than have nuanced discussions about topics, the go-to move now is to agree, accept and move on.

There's just a difference in the way you might use the word "female". Using "Female" as a descriptor is fine, and is normal (Female rapper, female athlete, etc.) The issue is when people use "Female" as a noun for an underlying negative connotation. For example, some people might say "All those females over there..." or "Y'all are just a bunch of females who don't know anything" etc. It is definitely hard to describe if you have never heard it used in the negative way! It is not necessarily the word "female" itself but definitely connotation/intent/usage.
Chloe C right!! And when you think about it- normal people don’t use “female” to describe women typically… they say “woman” or “women”. So when someone uses “female” it’s weird bc they went out of their way to say it like that and for an obvious reason😂
Sorry but by your own example isn't "Y'all are just a bunch of women who don't know anything" just as bad? Like surely it's the intent of the word in a sentence and not the word itself right.
On the “female vs woman” debate when referring to athletes and artists: it’s ok to use female in front of those defining nouns, so try to think of using female as an ADJECTIVE rather than a noun! Like you could refer to people as “fat people” but you wouldn’t refer to them as “fats”
Ah a really good point, I stand by this one. You don't refer to men as "male" in a face to face conversation either I never understood that. There are male or female professionals but we don't use it for individuals or groups, in school I learned it's for animals only.
@@MrAwEsOmE145770 so the problem is that female is usually used just as an adjective (and that is fine majority of the time). However, using the word female as a noun to replace the word woman - why? Usually, it is used in a deragotary way. You don't see women referring to a group men as "males". The word female as a noun to replace "woman" is usually used in incel communities to kinda dehumanize women. Safe choice is to use it just as an adjective (female athlete, female rapper), but not as a noun - it's a group of women, not females. Hope this helped to clear things a little 🌻
i have been such a fan for so long and i am SO happy with the addition of olivia, sam & shannon to the cast. it is so refreshing to have their opinions and they just add to the already amazing show you guys have. i love y’all. get me through the week. peace and love
yeah i was getting mad annoyed when they were debating the “female athlete” thing. saying “female” (title) is fine. the reddit post even says that saying “female rapper” is fine. they must have misread it.
I’m sorry bur I was dying when none of the crew understood that “female” can still be used as an adjective. Like “female athlete”, thats not offensive at all and is the correct way to say that. But referring to INDIVIDUALS or GROUPS of women you really should just say women. I don’t know why none of the crew got that lol
The whole "female" conversation... 10yrs ago when I was introduced to one of my now husband's douchey coworkers, he responded to my husband with "oh this is your female?" Not even talking to me directly and referring to me as if I was just a possession.
In the uk you get called a 'bird' which is like a fling but men will ask it no matter how long you've been together 🤣 and they always ask the guy instead of you too
using female as an adjective is perfectly fine! ex: "female athlete" "female rapper" I think it becomes dehumanizing when it's used as a noun, like how Dan said it would feel weird to refer to a group of women as "those females over there". There are obviously differences between racism and sexism, but I think it's a similar idea to say "black people" vs "those blacks over there".
I agree. However it is so common to say rapper or athlete and think male, so I think using female infront of it only further ostracizes females. If we just say she is an athlete or rapper, and don’t need to say female I think people will start to get the picture
Exactly!!!! There were a lot of comments on reddit arguing the same point but Ethan didn’t read them at all. I got so frustrated lol it’s not that complicated! It’s all about the nuance
Respecting the wishes of a community who are expressing hurt is not being a "yes man". If I called someone a babe and they said "Hey, actually, that word doesn't feel good for me. Could you call me darling instead?" And I agreed to instead call them darling, thats not me being a "yes man". Thats me respecting boundaries.
@@juharon I also can't help but feel that so many people are misunderstanding the point women are trying to make. Even the podcast misunderstood I think. Women don't give a fuck if you're using "female" as an ADJECTIVE, ie: female athlete, female rapper, female politician, etc. Its when men use "females" as a NOUN that it becomes dehumanizing. Saying "I've been talking to this female" "females are so emotional" removes the humanity from women. Its similar to calling gay people "gays", transgender people "transgenders" or black people "blacks". Removing the language that specifies that the person you're speaking of is a human being is what makes it dehumanizing. Every species has "females". But the human species has women.
@@benny8638 That's my point. Noone thinks it's offensive when it's used as an adjective.. It would be the stupidest thing ever. It seemed like not even Ethan thinks that. But since they all thought that the post was about that. He just went with it, and banned the word anyway. That's the definition of being a yes-man.
I'm cryinggg he looks like mr Bean trying to concentrate on what she's saying lmfaooo reminds me of the restaurant episode where he orders raw hamburger
I think they sorta misunderstood the whole 'female' thing (and I'm surprised they were surprised). Just use the word 'female' the same way you'd use 'male', and 'woman'/'women', the same way you would 'man'/'men' and you're fine. The incel thing is when in the male context they'd use the word 'man'/'men' and in the female context they use 'female'. As one of their comments reads, it's dehumanising because 'female' is a term that can describe any female animal whereas 'woman' is only for people.
I COULDNT AGREE MOREEE, like if you say female athlete and male athlete, that’s cool! it’s just degrading to refer to the female athletes as solely “females” because that is a descriptive word and very general, not as specific as “female athlete”
Same! I was like how have they all not heard of this issue and how do they STILL not get it- the adjective vs noun thing? And they were interpreting the post as if people were saying the word “female” is outright offensive and shouldn’t be used in any context. (That was not the point, obviously) Kind of annoying because that’s being used as a straw man to discredit women in the comments of this video and misconstrue the logic behind the original argument.
the difference between saying “female rapper” and “females” is the use of the word as an adjective versus the noun. the word “woman” is only ever used as a noun, so it sounds odd if you use the word woman as an adjective as in “woman rapper.” also, female refers to sex rather than gender, so calling women “females” is like referring to them by their genitalia.
People have actually used "woman" as a adjective for a while (even without recent feminism), but I honestly think it's un-necessary and uncalled for. But the main thing I think I think is a problem with "female" was potential trans-exclusionary implications. That's really the *only* thing I care about. "Incel energy" is cringe asf as an argument and entirely based on a specific internet subculture and how it decides to form associations.
@@chillin5703 yes, I agree. I think that the term woman is more trans-inclusionary. my perception is that generally we use the word female as a noun for animals or other non-human things, so it’s a bit dehumanizing
Are there any other issues we could all occupy our time trying to solve? This literally makes zero difference on the lives of anybody on this planet. I feel like a troll made that Reddit post
@@clarabellington surely it’s entirely based on the context. I could give context where “women” and “females” are both inappropriate, but it has nothing to do with the words themselves, only how they’re being used.
I’d bet money he has absolutely no idea what that means. Ethan’s a part of the chosen folks. He has probably never held a socket wrench in his life and the only time he’s been underneath a car was when he dropped a quarter and he got down looking for it.
The whole talk about "females" is a perfect example of how men are default and women are the "exception" to everything. When people ask you who's your favorite athlete, it's implied that they are asking male athlete, otherwise they'd specify with "female athlete". As a woman, I've never felt equal to men and this feeling started pretty early on. But I think the real talk isn't about using female as an adjective, but as a noun. It's a proper form of the language to use it as an adjective (eg female artist). However, it's not normal to replace the word woman with the word female (eg females are emotional). Lately people have been using this A LOT, at least online, and it definitely contributes to the cycle of violence against women because it reduces women to biological terms. It literally dehumanizes them.
Woman=noun Female=adjective That woman has a green backpack ✅ That female has a green backpack ❌ My favorite female athlete is Simone Biles ✅ My favorite woman athlete is Simone Biles ❌ When referring to clothing you can say “women’s clothing” instead of “female clothing” because they are in fact “clothes for women” not “clothes that are female” nor “clothes for females”
It’s like he’s being intentionally dense. It’s especially annoying when people say “men and females” in the same sentence which Ethan has said more than once.

My father would call me and my sisters “females” when he was upset with us. I have a bad connotation from that experience alone. I’m not going to stop someone from saying it though I’d like for them to be mindful of how it comes across to a woman.
Thank you Ethan and crew for educating yourselves and audience about why it's disrespectful and weird to refer to women as "females", It's really impactful for big platforms to discuss topics like these in healthy nonjudgmental environments with different genders present. "Sir, are you not aware that pursuing such actions with a person who is below the age of eighteen is a federal offense? I must ask you to cease this destructive behavior immediately lest you face the full force of the Law."
I feel like the whole female argument boils down to adjectives and nouns. Female is an adjective, something can be a female cat or a female human, but you can't just be A female. I personally feel like saying female athlete is fine, in the same way that saying male athlete is fine. It's a way to describe and give more context to the noun: athlete.
Exactly how I feel abt it. Female isn’t a bad word. It jus should be used correctly; as an adjective. Like u can say it ofc but there’s no reason to use it to be rude or sumshit like a lot of ppl be doing.
if anything trying to ultimately take the word female completely out of your vocab sounds like it would be exactly what incels would want lol. but saying something like “you know how females are” “this is for the females here” “i can’t stand females sometimes” is just bitter and rude and i think that’s what’s being said. and using female when referring to a profession like a female athlete is not bad to me either.
@@sof5339 There's a huge flaw in this argument, in that "womanly" is not the same word as "woman", wheras in the origin example "female" would be used as both a noun and an adjective. People don't say, "male-ly" and "female-ly", so your argument doesn't really hold up. The problem was specifically with people using the word "female" as a noun, it's as simple as that
For the whole “female”/“woman” thing, it’s moreso referring to modern colloquial use of “female” as in “This female came up to me” or “Females always...”. “Female” is an adjective used to designate an animal’s biological makeup, more specifically their reproductive role. Using “female” in terms of athletes/artists isn’t offensive because it’s being used for its general intended purpose- and it’s normal to say male and female in that context. Using “female” in sentences as a noun when referring to a woman is objectifying because it reduces a person to their reproductive role and detaches them from their humanity. This is why it carries misogynistic undertones. Hope this helps clear up some confusion!
@@Koooo4 Female is only used as a noun when species has already been specified. Female as a word, regardless of whether it’s being used as an adjective or noun, still only exists to identify an animal’s reproductive role. Human beings should not be referred to or identified solely based on whether they’re potential mates or not. Missing the entire point.
Spoilers! Although I guess if someone hasn't watched it at this point I don't know what to tell them. I binged the whole thing to prepare myself for this episode.
Thank goodness they talked about the “female” subreddit. My brother-in-law only refers to women as female. He’s super sexist, he says things like “these females” “Cause she’s a female” its so rude and annoying. I felt like i was the crazy one because no one called him out and except for me…
Woman is a noun, female is an adjective. Whoever said throw the baby out with the bath water is misunderstanding this concept. We still need to use the terms female and male in the right context, but out of context it can seem dehumanizing.
It was painful for me that they couldn't grasp that concept lol "Why doesn't woman athlete sound right?" like bro because you are using a noun to describe a noun lmao
@@Pickledill710 I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not I hope you are not actually recommending people censor themselves when it comes to using the word female
I think Ethan’s over correcting a bit/overthinking, still nice of him tho because tbh he used to give off those “feminists are all just crazy sjw” vibes when that whole genre of videos was big on UA-cam in like 2016. I didn’t describe that right but yeah.
I agree with the person who said that “female” is okay as an adjective - I don’t mind “female athlete,” or “female rapper” as identifiers. It does feel very dehumanizing to just be referred to as “a female.” When it’s used as a noun, I find it offensive.
@@classictalkies It's not that black and white though. In the rap scene it's totally appropriate as hip hop is a primarily male based genre. On top of that everyone is aware of the objectifying of women in hip hop so I feel its only more important to make the distinction. (In this context)
There's a difference between using the term to describe sex segregated events or asking "who your favorite female xyz is", and then just being referred to a "female" due to a way of being or acting or simply existing (which I do find the ladder offensive, it reminds me of the term "femoid" too much, which is purely derogatory). I think we should be careful not to erase the word or meaning because it's an important to discern between men and women in that way, whether physically, medically, etc.
@@classictalkies I think it's perhaps because men originally have been expected and able to do those things generally, meaning it's not being looked down upon or questioned, while women had more specific expectations on what women "should" be doing. So when women fought for their own spaces, it was important to differentiate those activities, as it's purely a space for women.

What Ethan fails to understand about Olivia’s (fantastic) demonstration, is that the technique is meant for when you are already being choked. It’s not a preventative measure-you are literally about to die, if you don’t escape. Yes, you will be on the floor, likely temporarily incapacitated, but you will be alive, and your lungs will have access to oxygen. You are not out of the fight yet, but you likely stunned and confused your attacker momentarily, which you can use to kick his knees out from under him. Or when he reaches for your face you can clamp down on his fingers and not let go until they are severed. These tips are meant to *save* you, not avoid trouble. You will die if you try to “think” about what to “logically” do.
its really no different than people having ghost stories though. Lots of people believe they had an encounter with a ghost and we humor the possibility. Theres just more stigma toward alien stories. But its more believable that theres other intelligent species from elsewhere in the universe than that theres remnants of deceased beings roaming around.

@Mario Sanabria your reply is basically the equivalent of telling someone who’s having a bad day not to be upset because there are people out there that have it worse than them. sure, there are more significant issues in the world than this particular one, but i still think it was nice that ethan and the crew acknowledged something that is clearly important to the women in their audience. it’s always a good thing when men try to be more respectful towards women, and their discussion on the topic in general was interesting to hear.

@@heathere1259 nope they are confused because people don’t understand English. Female is an adjective. People mistakenly use it for a noun which has been approved by the majority. People also get mad when it’s used as an adjective which is the correct way to use it.

Unfortunately I think this kind of reaction is common in society as whole. People tend to overcompensate regarding issues like this. Rather than have nuanced discussions about topics, the go-to move now is to agree, accept and move on.

Those "self defense" classes are 90% bullshit to make people feel better without working hard. If you actually care about defending yourself take kick boxing and Jiu-Jitsu classes. It's hard work but actually effective and an insanely good workout.
@@Enorbs96 sometimes those classes teach you to use your size to your advantage. I'm 4' 11 and 100lbs. I can't just fight my way to freedom from a kidnapper. I would need to know how to get away without just hoping I can punch hard enough.
So when someone uses “female” it’s weird bc they went out of their way to say it like that and for an obvious reason😂
it always sounds derogatory
I guess I don't understand. If you replace "female" with "women" in the same negative manner, its literally the same. I don't see the difference.

Does anyone know what the female dilemma is? I couldn’t understand the problem the whole time
@@MrAwEsOmE145770 so the problem is that female is usually used just as an adjective (and that is fine majority of the time). Hope this helped to clear things a little 🌻

using female as an adjective is perfectly fine! ex: "female athlete" "female rapper" I think it becomes dehumanizing when it's used as a noun, like how Dan said it would feel weird to refer to a group of women as "those females over there".
I feel the same way, and I feel like it has an important place in having different verbiage for sex than for gender

That "female" conversation was cringe af. I mean, there is a difference between being open-minded about something and being a yes-man.

YES PERFECT EXAMPLE
Tbh, I didn't understand it till I read the comments either.
the difference between saying “female rapper” and “females” is the use of the word as an adjective versus the noun. the word “woman” is only ever used as a noun, so it sounds odd if you use the word woman as an adjective as in “woman rapper.” also, female refers to sex rather than gender, so calling women “females” is like referring to them by their genitalia.

I agree with the person who said that “female” is okay as an adjective - I don’t mind “female athlete,” or “female rapper” as identifiers. It does feel very dehumanizing to just be referred to as “a female.” When it’s used as a noun, I find it offensive.
I feel the same
Female athlete or female rapper assumes that the default is (and should be) male. Why the hell are we doing that in the 21st century?
So when women fought for their own spaces, it was important to differentiate those activities, as it's purely a space for women.
you guys should do a legit talent show with the whole crew but zach isn’t allowed to play the guitar. then take a poll with us to see who won
Yeah Zach has do his second talent but that would be cheating haha
Omg better yet -- a talent show showcasing only HIDDEN talents
guys having a mixed title and thumbnail is the way to go. You can have the some cutouts from your squid games skit, as well as clippings of the other people you talk about. HAVE IT ALL. NOT JUST ONE PERSON. WITH PEACe AND LOVE
Regarding Wendy, I think the “farts” are too clear and the lapel microphone would be closer to her mouth. I think it’s mouth noise because an actual fart would be more distant/reverberated if heard at all. Hope this helps!
These are the hard hitting facts we need. Thank you for your service. I also agree that makes perfect sense
This was one of the funniest shows in a long time from the ending. What an absolute specimen Ethan proves to be once again.
Ethan: we planned our very own H3 Podcast Squid Game!
*clapping*
Ethan: We will be executing everybody but one of us..
Dan: sorry?
Squid Game @ 1:25:00
This episode was pretty boring though not going to lie
I can’t get enough of H3 I literally go everywhere playing this podcast,
Olivia has the most beautiful smile it’s so bloody infectious
i agree!!!!
I love olivia! Her opinion makes the dynamic different/ more interesting. Love hearing her takes
Olivia getting all the love (rightfully so) but i liked hearing from Sam too.
I am loving olivias addition to the group. She brings a whole other POV and vibe to the podcast. Loving it :)
same!
girl power !
Our new heartthrob of the show!
love her
She just plays the role of pc police and doesn't really say much else
Demi's abduction story reminds me a lot of the Harry Potter "shifting" people.
The Venn diagram of Demi Lovato fans and people who believe in shifting would just be a circle
its really no different than people having ghost stories though. Lots of people believe they had an encounter with a ghost and we humor the possibility. Theres just more stigma toward alien stories. But its more believable that theres other intelligent species from elsewhere in the universe than that theres remnants of deceased beings roaming around.
as a woman who's been watching h3 since 2016, i appreciate the conversation starting at 25:30 so, so much. thank you for taking the time to learn how to be even more respectful and mindful of women and your viewers who are women!
@@cozyallyson nah its much more than that, just shows how out of touch most americans are and just focus on the stupidest of things to get mad about while their country and the rest of the world is falling apart from REAL issues, not some grammar technicality. this is just an american far left "problem" that means literally nothing. also how privileged does ur life have to be for u to be upset over shit like this jeez
I agree with the comments. Making a big deal out of small problems likes this deters away from the bigger picture.
@@xDaringMotive small things add up to everyday sexism. You're ignorant
@@xDaringMotive we already don't look at the bigger picture and most americans don't seem to give a fuck about people from other countries. it feels impossible to make everyone value all people as people that deserve shelter and food and healthcare and safety. americans think that people from out of the country have lives of lesser worth than their own, and so do most of the people that run the country. i feel like we can't really do much to change the tide in our lifetime but this is just a tiny nudge in a better direction. 100% we need to talk about serious human rights violations and things as well, but you can have your cake and eat it too. there are creators out there that discuss those things
Squid game is such a great show and deserves all the attention that it gets
just wait till people start calling it "overrated" and it reaches its stage where its cool to hate it and say "omg whats even the hype about"
I love the show, I just think the fan base is killing it
@@swocks4085 everyone already calls it overrated and does that lol
Would it be anywhere near as popular if it weren't for the obsessive creeps on tik tok? We'll never know.
@@RabidDisposition tik tok definitely killed the show
Ethan is the type of guy to say, “whoever smelt it dealt it”…
😂
The part when Zach was chocking AB and he said "daddy chill" 😂💀
The ever changing thumbnail/title is the best part of OTR
I feel like “female athlete” and “female rapper” is only okay because we also regularly use “male athlete” and other things like that. But we don’t regularly refer to a group of men as “males.”
Exactly I don’t understand why they are confused lol. But I guess it’s bc they’re men. We don’t refer to men as “males” when referring to a group of men
@@heathere1259 They're confused bc some people are actually mad even when it's used as an adjective. As evident considering this was brought to Ethan's attention for referring to some TF clothing as "female clothing" and the fact that the subreddit for the past month has been bringing it up, pleading for certain people to stop using female even in situations where it was used as an adjective (I'd say about 40-50% of the time).
@@heathere1259 nope they are confused because people don’t understand English. Female is an adjective. People mistakenly use it for a noun which has been approved by the majority. People also get mad when it’s used as an adjective which is the correct way to use it.
Exactly, like when I was in nursing school, all the men in the program were referred to as “male nurse” by a lot of people, including themselves. When you think of a nurse, you assume a female nurse because it’s a female dominated field. It’s just what happens when you need to specify outliers. Whether it’s nursing, or any other career/topic or whatever
@@loopymomy2532 female can be used either as a noun or adjective. It’s not just an adjective…
Kim getting excited about her feet score being that high on wiki feet lmao. It’s everything, just pure entertainment
I can’t. I can’t. U guys get funnier and funnier. I legit can’t. The squid games had me dying “do u have ur passports”
lol ethan won squid game just like the main character won in the real squid game cuz ethan is the main cahracter
