both videos excellent for melting scrap and using tools
Great video Melissa! Thank you!
Excellent video! You answered every question I had! Thanks!
Well, I can't do better than that. I am glad it was helpful.
Super helpful. Thanks Melissa! I am going to order the crucible holder from Craig Dabler too! :)
Thanks for sharing
Thanks
Great video. Where can you buy the "fire brick crucible holder" that you are using in your video?
Thank you. It is from Craig Dabler at diycastings.com
Hi Melissa
I’ve bought the hose for my map gas canister but it sits very unstable on my work surface. How do you safely support it so it doesn’t fall over?
Also, my very first ingot had a pitted dark spot in it which I have drilled out. Can I now melt this ingot down again?
Thank you for such great videos
I have a clamp that allows me to hold that tank of gas. I have sometimes also
Built a small box and put the tank in there.
Hi Melissa
Thank you for another informative video. I didn’t understand what you were saying about the hose on the mapp gas. What goes cold? 😵💫
Depending on wheee you have the flame, or if the bottle is upside down, the flame will not be as hot.
Thankyou for sharing your knowledge. How hot does the mould need to be...or, rather, how do you know when it is hot enough? Hoping to avoid flying silver splats! 🤔
I just want to make sure it is warm. Maybe hot to the touch. The main thing is to not let it be cold. You never want to pour into a cold ingot.
I have a similar mold like yours and adjusted the mold to be a little narrower (i have a small rolling mill so i don't need a large cavity). For some reason whenever i pour, the metal just sits on top of the mold instead of flowing inside the cavity. I tried heating the mold well and making sure that the metal i pour is hot enough but for some reason i get the same effect. Now if i put the plates back to the way it was, now the metal flows inside (but what you get is a big upside down T shape ingot). Have you had the same experience? I don't know what I am doing wron
It sounds like a heat issue. Something is not hot enough. Either your mold or your metal. Are you keeping the heat on the metal as it pours in?
@@MelissaMuir I tried cleaning the mold, lubricate, and heat it again. This time I heated both plates thoroughly. You are right, I may not have heated the plates enough which explains why the ingot sits cold at the top. Thank you!
Ricaredo Jr Cerebo I am so glad you are having some success. That is great. ❤️
Hi Melissa
Do you oil the mold each time?
I do, yes.
What oil is it?
I just used a 3-1 machine oil.
Why boric acid not borax? 😁
There is a slight difference between the two. Having said that, I know people that have used Borax.
@@MelissaMuir why you choose boric acid? 😁
@@senghoucheong666 it was just what I was taught to use. Borax though, works well at higher temperatures. So it might have been a better option.
@@MelissaMuir OK.. Thank you 😁
Thanks
