The American is Rich Hall, who's a brilliant comedian, did a bunch of sketch comedy in the US, then has been a mainstay of UK comedy since the mid-late 90s. He does deadpan observational stand-up, absolutely hilarious. BUT he also does shows as the character Otis Lee Crenshaw, a white trash lounge singer, where he does comedy songs in a kind of terrible lounge music style, still with that raspy voice. I'd love to see you react to either version of his work.
No need to worry Sandi has been a comedy presenter for a long time in the UK. and her taking over from Stephen was almost seamless and the show didn't suffer one iota .
Sandi Toksvig was born in Denmark. She studied law, archaeology and anthropology at Girton College, Cambridge, where she also started her comedy career by participating in the first all-woman show of the Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club. She was also a member of the Cambridge University Light Entertainment Society. She was a natural to replace Stephen Fry.
The American comic is RICH HALL. I have seen him a couple of times. He's really funny. He was born in Virginia and has a small ranch in Montana. He also has a flat in London.
Sandi is very much a national treasure just like Stephen Fry, so it was really a natural progression to bring her in as the host after he retired from the show. He wasn't fired or anything like that, the BBC just increased the pace of filming to three shows every day and it was too much for Stephen, so he felt he couldn't continue with the show. To be honest, there are a few episodes where you can very much see he's absolutely exhausted, so it's really no wonder he wanted to move on to other things that were more his pace. I think Sandi does an amazing job, she's very smart, very funny, and has a very similar sense of humor to Stephen.
apologies if someone else has said this but Sandi once told something on QI which was quite interesting (pun possibly intended). when she was still a kid in the late 60s her Father, Claus Toksvig, was a Journalist working in the US who covered the moon landing in 1969 for the Danish broadcasting corporation, Sandi was 11 at the time and he took her with him, so she was at NASA HQ, Or whatever its called, when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.
Nick forgetting South Americas were colonised by Spain & Portugal then asking if Maria (Latin for Mary) is a super popular name in Europe 😂😂😂 bless his heart.
Maria is an common name in Spanish, Italian and German. The most famous Austrian named such, was Emperss Maria Theresa of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her ascension to the throne sparked war with Prussia. Also just as in Britain where the highest military medal is the Victoria Cross, named for Queen Victoria. In The Austro-Hungarian military, the supreme award was the Military Order of Maria Theresa.
The guy with the hat is Rich Hall - he's an American comedian who's lived and worked in UK for the last 20 years or so. BTW, Stephen Fry hosted the first 13 seasons (A to M). Sandi Toksvig (she's originally from Denmark, hence her name and the odd spelling of Sandi) has hosted since series N and they're now up to series T. She'd been on the series a few times as a panelist before that.
When I was a boy, I was one of about 20 singers asked to be on the backing group for a Julie Andrews album "The Sound of Christmas". Claim to fame moment.
Rich Hall has also done many documentaries about US cultural history for BBC. He's very interesting as well as witty with it. His riff about why you should pay attention to country music, and what's wrong with you if you don't, is gold.
Rich Hall has also done some BBC 4 documentries about American history/ culture .......The American Dream, The Cold War, Native Americans and Country & Western. All very good 👍
Regarding the name Maria; it wasn’t so much chosen, but used because the Sound of the Music was based on a true story and Maria was her real name. Apparently there is a “blink and you’ll miss it” cameo of the real Maria von Trapp in the movie, but I don’t know where.
Sandi Toksvig is Danish but was brought up in the US and here is her story of how she ended up with her British accent. ua-cam.com/video/vkqvpWFOfLE/v-deo.html Note this is Alan Davies chat show and two of the guests on this show were Sandi Toksvig and Stephen Fry.
Stephen Fry is currently trying to recover from an accident last September. He broke his pelvis, a leg and several ribs when he fell off a stage and landed on a concrete floor.
Never seen the movie… but in 7th grade we did the play version. I was the narrator with the most lines to remember. Went without a hitch, but I really wanted to do an acting part.
Rich Hall is not only a top class comedian but also a documentary presenter or maybe writer/producer about the US foe UK audiences which ar not only informative but cerebrally funny. A star here. should also be in the US.
I think Maria von Trapp née Kuczera was of Slavic origin and in Slavic languages Maria is the equivalent to Mary In German she would be called Marie which is pronounced like "Maria" but she was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire which was multi-ethnic and multi-lingual.
The shots from above with the num spinning in the mountains was shot from a helicopter and every time it got too close the down draft knocked her off her feet
Hi, I hope you're both doing well. This is my first comment on one of your videos. I've been watching them for a while and I'm always entertained. I must say that I really like your background. It contains most of my hobbies in one place. Nick, can you remember where you got that Marvel t-shirt from? I've been trying to get that or a similar looking one for ages. Also, the gentleman on the left of the desk is Rich Hall and it's widely believed that his face was the inspiration for Moe from The Simpsons. If you're interested in checking out more QI, might I suggest that you search for Alan Davies doing animal impressions. Take Care.
Joanna Lumley hosted the BAFTAs as the first solo female host twenty years ago, and I'm sure that wasn't the first female solo presenter of anything, just the BAFTAs
I always find it incredible when Americans don’t even know their own best comics lol. It’s like they produce world class comedians like Rich Hall & Reg Hunter, then they have to leave the country to be appreciated and get air time on tv because the US won’t give airtime to anyone genuinely funny. They just ram Dave Chappelle down everyone’s throats & incarcerate anyone who doesn’t like him. Rich has been a world class comic for at least 30 years, I remember him being on regular TV in the U.K. as early as 1995. He used to be a QI regular & is famed for droll/deadpan comedy. He has a great repertoire of talking about his home state of Montana - how everyone there is very stupid & lonely and a lot of them talk to animals, have relationships with animals (some of them sexually), and then kill & eat the animals because the nearest store is like 80 miles away, then cry themselves to sleep. He’s a very funny dude, but can see why the broadcasting companies in the states wouldn’t want him on TV; he’s pretty anti American Dream.
There is a famous Mary/Maria the mother of Jesus(Miriam and Maryam go back to ancient Hebrew and Aegyptian), Maria is one of the many variations of Mary(there are variations in virtually every language and some languages have many variations) some being Marie, Maria, Marian, Marietta, Marin, Marisol, Mariska, Maurya, Maaria, Maarja, Mair, Mari, Marja to name just a few, also there are the male equivalents Marion, Marius and Mario.
Making you watch Sound of Music more than once it’s called husband abuse. The penalty for this serious crime is she has to do the housework and cooking for a week. Good luck with that one😂😂😂
Rich Hall is a brilliant satirist and comedian and features heavily on British Panel shows, He has been on all of them including 8 out of 10 cats, and QI. Shows you have not reacted to that he has been on Never Mind the Buzzcock (Musical panel show's origin goes back to the 90s) & Have I got News for you again another show whose origin goes back to the 90s (topical news show satirising current affairs). here's a list 8 out of 10 cats does count down (the merge of 2 shows. probably the funniest show on tv. Sandi is brilliant. She is gay but somehow manages to kind of flirt with everyone, gay men, straight men, gay women and straight women without it ever seeming to be awkward or inappropriate. She took over from Stephen and it was as if she had always been in the chair.
Nick sometimes I fear for our children’s future if you relate the name Maria solely to Hispanic people, Maria is a very common name throughout Europe and beyond particularly in all catholic countries. The sound of music had about as much to do with the holocaust as did pearl harbour.

On the commentary for The Sound Of Music they talk about doing that famous opening twirl on meadows mountain top, but the number of takes it required to get the (very!) low flying helicopter flying around her (super loud too!) and blowing the grass or her dress most of the times! I know we are used to drone cams these days, but even back as a kid, I never once wondered how they got that spinning dress shot without the grass blowing like it does in Nam movies etc! And according to Matt Groening, the inspiration for Moe Szyzslak from the Simpsons.

He did a year on SNL with Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest.
Also well worth looking up his documentaries on various aspects of US culture.

i agree totally. perfect choice
It suffered by at least one viewer, I watched way less
i like sandy but stephen was better, i still miss him.
She was the only plausible choice but the show still suffered big time!
Oh Rich Hall! I'm not sure if you've already seen the QI clip "How many moons does the Earth have". He's also in it. And you have to see it.

Rich Hall is supposed to be the inspiration for Mo in the Simpsons.

Rich Hall is from Montana
Josh Widdecome, lived in Devon, school had I think 8 children or less? Different years?
i really liked her on CALL MY BLUFF. She was brilliant, and hilarious.
I used to watch that over 20+ years ago. That was the original WILTY, for sure
And the original Call My Bluff started in 1965 and was hosted by Robert Robinson for over 20 years.

I think Julie Andrews has always looked about 35. Even when she was a teenager 😆
Maria was in a Catholic convent and many many Catholic girls are called Maria or at least have Maria as a middle name, whatever their nationality.
