Completely agree. Thought Starburster and Favourite were very different and was excited to see how the album connected them... but it didn't. The middle is pretty flat.
This album is a clear 10/10. The earnestness of Motorcycle Boy, directness of Horseness is the Whatness, portraiture of opposite ends of borderline bi-polar yet so honest human condition on tracks like Death Kink and Starburster, heartwarming closure that is Favourite, and the overall sonic world of the entirety of it all that -yes- wears influences proudly but is pulled of with a panache that belongs to the zeitgeist.. The most important thing is Fontaines built up to this point - they’re not ‘switching’ things up, they grew to be what they are today album by album, and each one constructing the topography of a landscape that is truly their own. They’re one of the last true bands, not strategizing about how to sound like over boardroom meetings, but just exist in their own authentic self.

@@StardustAnnE Bruh it's like you didn't even read my comment. Like I said, he gives it a really fair and diplomatic review, explaining its appeal and its positives even if it didn't subjectively fit his taste in particular
I've become a bigger fan of Fontaines D.C. in the past year or two. 'Skinty Fia' sealed the deal. Though, I've enjoyed what I've heard from this album thus far. I'll have to listen to it in its entirety. Your insight is always appreciated 🍻
I’m a fan of theirs, but I will say that their lyrics are very inconsistent. They are either poetic or very on-the-nose. They have song titles like “Jackie Down the Line” (cool) and “In the Modern World” (lame). They have a lot of great songs, but no great album yet. Giving this one a “5” is too harsh but I wouldn’t give the album as a whole more than a “7.”
This is an all-timer bad take for Fantoine. Put it in the land of The Brief Inquiries, Blue Weekends, and Golden Hours. Favourite has a Just Like Heaven level riff and is my SOTY. It's firmly in my top 5 of the year and climbing with every listen.
Hey Anthony long time fan and usually agree with all your reviews but this one you couldn't have got more wrong.. kinda disappointed but that's your opinion.
This won't age well. Fontano shoulda spent more time with it, as should everyone else slagging it off as "boring". It has levels. It grows. You aren't listening.
The solo album by singer Grian Chatten "Chaos for the fly" is incredible in terms of song structures, orchestration and performance. If you don't know it, i recommend it is really different from Fontaines DC and really refreshing
Hate to agree! I’m a big fan of Skinty Fia, loved seeing the band live a few years ago, but felt the same way about this album; maybe not as low as a five, but definitely didn’t scratch the itch I had in the lead up to the release
Saying the album is poorly written is insane. I thought it was incredible how the narrative structure throughout the album took us through every faucet of "romance", from its manipulations and shortcomings in Bug to its almost child-like naivety in Horseness in the Whatness. Or how about the romantic (or in Fantano's words "blissful") nostalgia of your old home town in Favourite or even more interestingly the dubious Christian conception of Love in Motorcycle Boy. In the Modern World and Desire provide a romance of angst and love as refuge. Combine all of this lyrical narrative with the many genres and sounds of music and you have this sort of anthology on love and romance which I really enjoyed. You had the vibe of Smashing Pumpkins' Tonight, Tonight in a lot of the ballads like Desire, Motorcycle Boy and In the Modern World, you have the Ode to Depeche Mode in Romance, you almost have a Nirvana song in Death Kink and a Beach House song in Sundowner.
@@5wheels178 I called it a great piece of music didn't I? Which would suggest I am enjoying it. I'm too old to not have my own opinion. Im glad other people have theirs too. Especially when the rating is ridiculous
Sad you didn't relate as much as I did to the Radiohead, Blur and The Smith's influence on this one. Not as magic as Skinty Fia but a banger nevertheless. 7-8 at the very least😅
i think it’s such a bummer that he was so quick to dismiss skinty fia based on his opinions of their previous records. i think there’s a lot of tracks that he really would’ve liked or at least appreciated, given his current stance on them.
Anthony you have turned into a gimmick, if In Utero or Seventeen Seconds were released in 2024 you would only give the albums a 5 or 6. With statements like, bad songwriting or bad production. Go and feed the mainstream masses what they want to hear
This has got to be one of the worst reviews I've seen so far from Fantano. Like, the reasonings he gives are just dumb. It feels like he's holding this type of music to a much higher standard than other genres (he does the same to many other modern Inide/Alt bands like DIIV, Alvvays, Snail Mail, etc.). I never hear him complain about this "lack of dynamics between verses and choruses" in Hiphop or Pop songs. But even within the genre of Post-Punk/Alt-Rock etc. you won't hear him complain about these things when it comes to classic bands. A song like "Disorder" by Joy Division for instance just a vibe from start to finish with not a lot of changes or dynamics going on (and it's a great song btw.). But somehow it's not an issue there for him. That's just a bias for the classics and a really dumb double standard. Romance is a 9/10 for me, and contrary to this review, that's really just my opinion and not some weird standard for the genre. Ugh.

@@leonhaven62622 good and the rest are great, spot on
@@4eyeT 2 good, the rest is disappointing to me.
I appreciate how much Fantano emphasizes in this review that he respects how much people enjoy it and the band, even if it doesn't really click with him
shame his viewers can't take the same approach!
He's American of course he doesn't get it.. But chooses Brat as album of the year like if it was some avant garde album, is just a Charli album that sounds exactly like every 2010's pop song and I like Charli but shit it's not a 10..even Sabrina carpenter better than Fontaine really?? That's amefican
@@StardustAnnE Bruh it's like you didn't even read my comment. Like I said, he gives it a really fair and diplomatic review, explaining its appeal and its positives even if it didn't subjectively fit his taste in particular
@@5wheels178 Agreed. That's just how the internet is tho
@@StardustAnnE fontaines dc are crap
He’s edging us! Where’s the MagBay review Melon!!???
horseness is the whatness is so under appreciated man...
Where is imaginal disk Anthony!
Haven't disagreed with someone on every point in ages
Strong agree
Glad to know I wasn't the only one disappointed by this. I love Starburster, Bug, and Favourite though.
Get a taste of your own
Still no Rory Gallagher review for classics week?
This is an all-timer bad take for Fantoine. Put it in the land of The Brief Inquiries, Blue Weekends, and Golden Hours.
Favourite has a Just Like Heaven level riff and is my SOTY. It's firmly in my top 5 of the year and climbing with every listen.
Hey Anthony long time fan and usually agree with all your reviews but this one you couldn't have got more wrong.. kinda disappointed but that's your opinion.
L bro L take
Listen to electronic shit lol
Love or hate the instrumentals and structures, the lyrics are pure poetry.
RATING IT 5 IS CRAZY
This album is a strong 9 no question.
Thank you for validating my opinion on this album I felt so alone
Right?!
yep! every second fontaines album is mid af
Hm I wonder what people think about melon’s opinion on Fontaines D.C.’s new album

It's OK guys he's just saving the mag bay 10 for the end of the week
real
This won't age well. Fontano shoulda spent more time with it, as should everyone else slagging it off as "boring". It has levels. It grows. You aren't listening.
The solo album by singer Grian Chatten "Chaos for the fly" is incredible in terms of song structures, orchestration and performance. If you don't know it, i recommend it is really different from Fontaines DC and really refreshing
Pity it has one of the all time worst album covers!
@@JMD166 Not a solid argument sorry. In the Jazz catalog for example, you can find really bad album covers but still great albums
@@yovanmusic? I’m not talking about the music?
He’ll probably somehow find a way to give it a -17/10
I disagree! I adore this album
A 5?!!???? Sundowner being least fav track??? Omg
Everyone has different opinions but a 5? Really? Horrendous take.
Every single song is a grower 8/10
Sundowner a bad song!? You're lost, melon...
Everybody waiting on the Magdalena Bay but I'm hyped for the new Melt-Banana review.
This is at least an 8 or a 9, holy shit Fantano.
I saw them last night in Liverpool. Even live I think their older songs are better but only two or three of their new tracks are actually top tier.
Horseness is to Whatness slaps
didn't expect this to be 5😬
now waiting for Magdalena Bay
Don’t entirely disagree but I think Sundowner is a highlight
Melon you are genuinely tweaking with ts
Skinty fia is better overall. Bug is their best song on Romance.
Rating this great piece of music a 5/10 is insane. You need to check yourself. Thankfully people in the comments have their own opinion.

FUCK NO
i think it’s such a bummer that he was so quick to dismiss skinty fia based on his opinions of their previous records. i think there’s a lot of tracks that he really would’ve liked or at least appreciated, given his current stance on them.
Sort your life out Fantano. This deserves more than a 5😊
Anthony you have turned into a gimmick, if In Utero or Seventeen Seconds were released in 2024 you would only give the albums a 5 or 6.
With statements like, bad songwriting or bad production.
Go and feed the mainstream masses what they want to hear
Another Fontaines AreMid album
Sundowner being the least favorite track is crazy work
Melon Man is wrong on this one
A 5?? This exactly why i stopped listening to Anthony like that ...
Time for a Midas by Wunderhorse review
He'll give that a 3 based on this
This is a 10/10 antknee. Your Fontaines D.C. hate has always been there
My album of the year.
'Please turn him off' is what my fiancé said about this vid, album is ACE, just listen to it
If this were the new Magdalena Bay album it would have been a 9
Im givng this youtube channel a decent to strong 5
Finally some agrees that the album is MID. I thought I was outta my mind.
Ugh.
