regardless to what many people are saying, i believe it is important to check the authenticity of the artist you like. and i know for sure that fontaines dc are not sellouts. they were hungry for succes and fame in their first album (like the song big for example), and now that they achieved it, it is difficult for them to continue to write about the working class they grew up around (and ye, btw there's actually very little working class about them). so they start writing about universal feelings of all people such as life and love and so on all the while also developing their own sound and experimenting on. if the band was theoretically a sellout, they would definetly just make skinty fia 2 with catchy basslines from the cure like in the song favourite or i love you for an entire album and sing about how dublin is a shithole. what they did instead was actually try something new and continue to stay true to themselves and their feelings while making good music. so they're definetly not sellouts, not in my opinion. and if we're talking about the outfits, we have to admit that 1) if they went with the same clothing as in their previous albums it would just get old, and would feel as if they're trying to push the skinty fia 2 vibe again and 2) it's difficult for a band to stay relevant in modern world just because they make good music, so they might be just trying to bring attention to themselves in this way (the attention though is well deserved). it's like putting a shiny wrap on a tasty new candy, just so the people yet unfamiliar with the taste of it try it and appreciate it for themselves. so yeah, i was expecting something else from the album, and i actually think it's good that my expectations were not satisfied. i instinctively assumed they would just make the same songs with the same sound, but instead they went with the deep lyricsism and trippy sound. p.s. i only wish the album had a tiny bit more energetic songs like starburster. here's the thing just doesn't work for me for some reason. i hate it and i can't explain why,
I love this new album. It has been playing on repeat since it arrived. Who cares what they are wearing. I actually like the interesting garb they are wearing. Creative people tend to wear creative clothing in my opinion.
Their new style of clothing and hair reminds me a bit of Mamonas Assassinas so it actually made me even more interested in the album. It's a cool kind of goofy.
Some interesting thoughts and comments. I need to give some feedback on your points about influence of Manchester bands at around the 2 minute mark. It's true that The Smiths had Irish heritage and there are similarities with Morrissey in particular who immersed himself with Irish poets like Wilde and Yeats, as well as English poets and those from elsewhere. A lot of the music of The Smiths was about growing up in Manchester, as Dogrel was so much about Dublin. But there are other more prominent post-punk influences from two Manchester bands which you didn't mention - Joy Division and The Fall. Grian's style and delivery is almost a combination of Ian Curtis and Mark E Smith, and of course you do see forms of Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown. You should remove the graphic at 2:22 which seems to be a random collection of bands across various rock and pop genres that have some connection to Manchester from the 60s to the present day. Only the bands I've mentioned or implied above have any bearing on the evolution of Fontaines D.C. Take That are a fine pop band if you like that sort of thing but were not part of the 'Madchester' scene.
Proudly I met the guys in a local pub in North London around this time a year ago and I suggested a total look make over Who knew that exactly a year later they would have gone this far :)) musically I like their new direction I hear a lot of sounds and lyrics I knnow already Nick Drake the cure depeche mode lara del ray plenty of 90s sound as well but FDC is here to stay in whatever form and I like that!
Leave Trev out of it. He’s given so many Irish bands a space and opportunity to play. Also I’m pretty sure the new look clothes are all by Irish designers and some of the band had been moving in that direction stylistically. Trev ran ClubNight’s and booked bands for the venue. Seems like a stretch to me.
Well they're literally selling out almost all there shows in there current tour. So yes i sould say so but artistically i think not. Having seen them live they are passionate about there music and performance especially Griam. If the question is if they are inauthentic, then no they are the real deal. Guys who got lucky that everything came together in the right way
I don't always love where band go, when they change. But... I understand why they change (making the same stuff is boring, and we grow up so it's natural). And in a way I really love band that change, they have balls, and it makes me discover other music. So good for them, even though I dislike the outfit lol. Also it sucks for them to have made Skinty Fia so fast. It's so damn good. ♥But new album is cool. I wish the best for them.
The album is great no matter what they wear. I think they're just having fun with the 90's style clothing and silly looking sunglasses they found from that flea market they love. Let the boys have their fun.
I saw Fontaines DC, with about 40 others, at the Bullingdon in Oxford in 2018. Then at Coventry Library with about 50 people in 2019....These guys have worked and slogged their way to where they are now. The hard yards have been run and it's time for them to fly. 4 albums in 6 years is no mean feat.
UK indie music oldschool DJ Steve Lamacq discovered them years ago as a lyric driven shouty/talky indiePunk outfit. Now they make real music. Amazing evolution. They keep getting better! New LP is best rock album of last 2decades. They got real talent, charisma and belief. Maybe the only sellouty thing they done is leaving Dublin for London.
They may come live hear in Utrecht, near Amsterdam, they can live anywhere where the buzz is. Northpole is bit cold but could be inspirational for lyrics and icy sounds
as an european and rock-postpunkish enjoyer, i can affirm fontaines dc have always topped this kind of bands. Im a little sad that in their new album they abandoned their classic post punk sound, and they sound more american and pop-ish to me. So id you want to listen some european bands similar to the first fontaines listen to Shame, The murder capital, depresión sonora and alcalá norte!!
I don't care about their authenticity. I like the fact that I am starting to like their music. Very few artist don't sell out and they become a whatever happen to them artist. Some of their songs I find amazing like Starburster. But some song I don't get. It might take awhile. Don't start ruining a band just to get views. I am getting tired of creators whose shtick is getting view by tearing things down. Specially upcoming talent.
fontaines dc is doing what all great artists should do: change things up. one of the reasons i so greatly dislike IDLES is because their music has been the exact same for 5 albums now. dc sounds different with each record
Their new music sounds interesting, while the older stuff can be quite derivative of The Fall, I almost wanted to call them the UK's equivalent of Pavement for that
As an Irish person in the music scene, I think I can add some missing points. Fontaines are very much apart of the corporate sanatisation of the 'alt' scene here to something very clean and safe for suburbia. They're apart of these unimaginative wasteland indie bands that switiched to the post-punk label in 2015 -2016 due to the mild sucess of Girl Band using the term. Overnight, these Joy Division wannabe bands appeared everywhere and they felt all unauthentic. Fontaines appeared just as this was happening, but they were worse being a BIMM band. It isnt so much like your european music conservatory teaching you music on techincal skill level, more so a school that sucks up impressionnable 18yr olds and put them in the private marketing school of rock, (or that's the feeling anyways from my brief time there). Essentially, it feels to the rest of us, Fontaines never really developed a musical taste or artistic intent or did the hard concert circuit grind, they more or less were teens following trends that got picked out by music industry. When they do feel authentic, for example the 'punk energy' that sometimes comes through in some of their early songs, it is hammpered by the standard radio friendly production got assigned to them, and the lyrics, i think all their social commentary , i've heard a million times in idle chit-chat here, they just copy and paste stuff people are already saying. Sad, because i think if these guys didn't go to bimm, failed abit, they would of developed a unique sound, not an AI post punk instrumental with a dublin accent attached . Also, don't know what corporate yoko ono's made them start dressing like twats.
His new album is too mainstream. I'm sure many people will sing and dance in big stadiums with "Here's the thing"(what an irritating chorus) or "In the Modern World", but not me. I will be at home doing other things. At least I saw them when they were good.
Dont mistake progression with selling out. I bet someone just finding this new album and liking it with no idea about past catalog ,how would you explain that? Is that a bad thing? The Beatles are a good example.
Ah here , if we are going to talk about their authenticity, you can start with the singer. He’s from SWORDS but sounds like someone from the inner city . To be fair he admits to the over exaggerates the accent . Most of the lads aren’t even from Dublin. Monaghan and Mayo and Spain (Carlos ) get some representation I’d don’t see any attempt to sell out for the sake of getting fame and money . They have to progress and move on in their music I have tried to dislike them because of the hype in Ireland, but nah, listen to all of the tracks on the album … it’s great . Adore the song a Hero’s Death . I thought Liberty’s Belle was naff until I listened to it a lot , ya, classic. Shinty FIA is very good
If you qualify for the FFI then your end will be €3k per year. You can apply to SUSI for a grant to cover that, maybe that's just for Irish students. There are also several scholarships available, one of which Fontaines provide now to the tune of €12k. In any event, whatever it cost them or their families financially, it certainly paid off for them.
The songs from new album are great... their clothes are awful! But assuming how dumb people usually are it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out as fashion.

What a bullshit clickbait title. This is 2024 not the 80s and 90s when music existed in insular tribal "scenes." Bands get popular if they're good. Get over it.
Their sound is nowhere near palatable for normies, they've changed for sure, but a lot of their older songs had comment sections full of people in their 60s saying "this sounds like the music that came out when I was young", if they kept playing sounds like that would that not be the definition selling out?

No hooks. That’s why the albums stalled at 4Ok in Britain. Big problem if they want to make a living outside of the festival circuit. Happy Mondays, Underworld, Joy Division, a few of the bands that have influenced them, all had great hooks. Unfortunately the Fontaines do not.

That story was so sad, I genuinely couldn't believe it when I read it. After the album got released the band went and visited that woman's family.
It is the Rory Custom Shop. Curley plays a Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar, which I believe Carlos played but didn't keep. If you haven't seen the Rig Rundown with both guitarists, it's worth a watch.
Loved Rories way of play. Still miss him.
they did not grow up in the liberty's, thats just where Bimm music college is located
ah sorry
regardless to what many people are saying, i believe it is important to check the authenticity of the artist you like. and i know for sure that fontaines dc are not sellouts. they were hungry for succes and fame in their first album (like the song big for example), and now that they achieved it, it is difficult for them to continue to write about the working class they grew up around (and ye, btw there's actually very little working class about them). so they start writing about universal feelings of all people such as life and love and so on all the while also developing their own sound and experimenting on. if the band was theoretically a sellout, they would definetly just make skinty fia 2 with catchy basslines from the cure like in the song favourite or i love you for an entire album and sing about how dublin is a shithole. what they did instead was actually try something new and continue to stay true to themselves and their feelings while making good music. so they're definetly not sellouts, not in my opinion. and if we're talking about the outfits, we have to admit that 1) if they went with the same clothing as in their previous albums it would just get old, and would feel as if they're trying to push the skinty fia 2 vibe again and 2) it's difficult for a band to stay relevant in modern world just because they make good music, so they might be just trying to bring attention to themselves in this way (the attention though is well deserved). it's like putting a shiny wrap on a tasty new candy, just so the people yet unfamiliar with the taste of it try it and appreciate it for themselves.
so yeah, i was expecting something else from the album, and i actually think it's good that my expectations were not satisfied. i instinctively assumed they would just make the same songs with the same sound, but instead they went with the deep lyricsism and trippy sound.
p.s. i only wish the album had a tiny bit more energetic songs like starburster. here's the thing just doesn't work for me for some reason. i hate it and i can't explain why,
But long article for a Dutchman, but i feel the same as you
But, i liked their ballads most. There Arent on this one.
Why is it when someone suddenly becomes big the men start wearing dresses/skirts ?
I love this new album. It has been playing on repeat since it arrived. Who cares what they are wearing. I actually like the interesting garb they are wearing. Creative people tend to wear creative clothing in my opinion.
samee, death kink is stuck in my head rn
The only review that should matter. Like the sound? Listen. Dont like it? Dont listen.
Nobody cares anymore.
Lyrics and attitude matter. Really. Look into history. Cant wipe it away
Their music has evolved, clickbait used to be believable…
Have the band made any comments about their country being invaded?
The only constant in life is change . Luv them!
Proudly I met the guys in a local pub in North London around this time a year ago and I suggested a total look make over
Who knew that exactly a year later they would have gone this far :)) musically I like their new direction I hear a lot of sounds and lyrics I knnow already Nick Drake the cure depeche mode lara del ray plenty of 90s sound as well but
FDC is here to stay in whatever form and I like that!
you predicted it fr
Leave Trev out of it. He’s given so many Irish bands a space and opportunity to play. Also I’m pretty sure the new look clothes are all by Irish designers and some of the band had been moving in that direction stylistically. Trev ran ClubNight’s and booked bands for the venue. Seems like a stretch to me.
A sellout is an artist who stays silent when their country is being invaded and transformed into a multi cultural balkanised hell hole.
Well they're literally selling out almost all there shows in there current tour. So yes i sould say so but artistically i think not. Having seen them live they are passionate about there music and performance especially Griam. If the question is if they are inauthentic, then no they are the real deal. Guys who got lucky that everything came together in the right way
Fontaines DC pure talent! Beyond impressed with them and I hope they keep going on forever.
hell yea
I don't always love where band go, when they change. But... I understand why they change (making the same stuff is boring, and we grow up so it's natural). And in a way I really love band that change, they have balls, and it makes me discover other music. So good for them, even though I dislike the outfit lol.
Also it sucks for them to have made Skinty Fia so fast. It's so damn good. ♥But new album is cool. I wish the best for them.
The album is great no matter what they wear. I think they're just having fun with the 90's style clothing and silly looking sunglasses they found from that flea market they love. Let the boys have their fun.
As someone who was in their early 20s in Dublin... I don't remember these clown outfits on anyone.
Idc what they are, this new album is absolutely amazing. My favorite album of 2024 for sure.
You missed that they formed in 2014 as just Fontaines and released two singles under that name in 2017.
Surely, there been hard labour, but also joy in it, you can sense it
UK indie music oldschool DJ Steve Lamacq discovered them years ago as a lyric driven shouty/talky indiePunk outfit.
I love Fontaines and their new album but Alcalá Norte is great as well!
Frankly it would be boring if they stayed playing the same sort of stuff. Best musicians evolve. All power to them!
yes, youre right!! Its just that some of their new songs are not my cup of tea, but still love them and trusting them!
They are not upcoming, they are here here for many years .
However new there music, i will recognize them from a thousand bands
in a heros death they mentioned living in america and WELL NOW THEY SOUND AS THEY LIVE IN AMERICA
fontaines dc is doing what all great artists should do: change things up. one of the reasons i so greatly dislike IDLES is because their music has been the exact same for 5 albums now. dc sounds different with each record
Idles slightly changed their style last album, but I get what you mean
You sense the hard labour and the joy of it all
Hey thank you so much for introducing me to them I’ll totally check them out
I hope you enjoy them 🫡🫡
'does you really dont no where the avenuears go' , give ne the chviers. Play it loud
Their new music sounds interesting, while the older stuff can be quite derivative of The Fall, I almost wanted to call them the UK's equivalent of Pavement for that
They're Irish.
@@Jhewitt-ev6ye still. it's the sound. of...some of their songs anyway. was my impression before i knew anything about them.
Re referring to their style and sound. Loads of people have referred to the similarities with The Fall , for years
From the bloodline of Virgin Prunes. Nuff said.
Sellouts? They’re a BAND in 2024. Are you?
Corporate yoko Ono , brilliant ! lol.
@@gavintuesday4959Yoko ono was my Joke earlier, he took it, he took it, he took my yellow basked,he picked it up and put it in its pocket
Loved Rories way of play. Still miss him.
Mick Taylor is the other one.
His new album is too mainstream. I'm sure many people will sing and dance in big stadiums with "Here's the thing"(what an irritating chorus) or "In the Modern World", but not me. I will be at home doing other things. At least I saw them when they were good.
It will chance, be patience and listen some more.
They look ridiculous now. Sold my tickets because if it. Their clown outfits and that dress ...WTF
Dont mistake progression with selling out. I bet someone just finding this new album and liking it with no idea about past catalog ,how would you explain that? Is that a bad thing? The Beatles are a good example.
There’s nothing working class about those lads . Just focus on the music
No. They where born with gitar in hand. Mozart with the violin. My father with hammer.
Another irish band you might like is the pogues with shane mcgown
Ah here , if we are going to talk about their authenticity, you can start with the singer. He’s from SWORDS but sounds like someone from the inner city . To be fair he admits to the over exaggerates the accent . Most of the lads aren’t even from Dublin. Monaghan and Mayo and Spain (Carlos ) get some representation
I’d don’t see any attempt to sell out for the sake of getting fame and money . They have to progress and move on in their music
I have tried to dislike them because of the hype in Ireland, but nah, listen to all of the tracks on the album … it’s great . Adore the song a Hero’s Death . I thought Liberty’s Belle was naff until I listened to it a lot , ya, classic. Shinty FIA is very good
good music is what really matters at the end of the day
The bleu album (2) is the best. Refined. This new one is bombastisch , but still some good songs on it. Minus the bombast .
What does '"authenticity" even mean? Their music is great. That's all I need.
I agree. Still i will critizise. Being free.
That college costs around 6/7k a year
doesnt sound too crazy ngl
If you qualify for the FFI then your end will be €3k per year. You can apply to SUSI for a grant to cover that, maybe that's just for Irish students. There are also several scholarships available, one of which Fontaines provide now to the tune of €12k. In any event, whatever it cost them or their families financially, it certainly paid off for them.
Honestly, I can’t really see the hypocrisy?. They’re a successful band and worked with a successful company.
The songs from new album are great... their clothes are awful! But assuming how dumb people usually are it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out as fashion.
I call them the Fontainians. Easier, like the Dubliners and so on
It's sad really.
great video, are you going to do a wunderhorse video?
I need to check them out, I don't know them sorry
@@Krysiss Oh wow ur the first fontaines fan who doesn’t know them 😂. They don’t sound even similar to fontaines but they are really good and have an album out on the 30th if you ever want to check them out
Eh, I think they arent over doing it, yet.
Short answer - No.
Suede is good to it’s like your thing krysis
Your criticize society, yet you participate in it. Yes. I am a very smart journalist
😭
We all do. Were all 'under the influence'.
Is Grain a sort of priest now ? With the dress and all ..
love your channel dude
thank youu
What a bullshit clickbait title. This is 2024 not the 80s and 90s when music existed in insular tribal "scenes." Bands get popular if they're good. Get over it.
With the new album they definitely did sellout a bit
Their sound is nowhere near palatable for normies, they've changed for sure, but a lot of their older songs had comment sections full of people in their 60s saying "this sounds like the music that came out when I was young", if they kept playing sounds like that would that not be the definition selling out?
@@liamsweeney4754 I understand but compared to skinty fia it's much simpler wayyy more advertised and way shorter tracks with less instrumental depth and less to dig in
..................no?
Great video!!!
I will critizise..
Totaly hyped. Cryptical teenage lyrics from thirtiers. Producer drunk on fuzz and distortion, he became member of the band. How odd. What is really going on ?
i personally didn’t like the new album
No hooks. That’s why the albums stalled at 4Ok in Britain. Big problem if they want to make a living outside of the festival circuit. Happy Mondays, Underworld, Joy Division, a few of the bands that have influenced them, all had great hooks. Unfortunately the Fontaines do not.
Do the verve please
that too
Do the strand or do 'Do Nothing'
@@jakbak-y6f the strand?
@@Futureman321thought it was the lyrics of brain ferry but i'm not sure. I'm not British. Sort of dance.
'do nothing' is a Brit band i like.
Musically no, not keen on the new contrived stylist treatment and the stupid bicycle goggles though.
Its more of a gimmick these sunglasses and dresses, like toys. Sort of protection against being known to the whole wide world . They are still sensitive people. I like them for it.
from 10:20 onwards this is the stupidest video i’ve ever seen in my life 👍
I loved their first album Dogrel, loved the punk rock energy. I still love them but they've lost that punk energy, the new album is way too soft and poppy
Good video
Thanks!
They're not from The Liberties...
yea sorry I got it wrong, I thought they were bcz of the song
@@Krysissthey went to music college in that area . They aren’t working class either . The lead singer is from Swords , outside the city centre , and some of the other lads are from rural Ireland . Mayo and Monaghan .
@@Krysiss It's the name of a pub on the same road as the college they went to
I never liked them as a irish guy i cannot listen to the strong dublin accent its terrible
Worse, it’s a little exaggerated
what an awful video. you say you are a fan but yet say these things?
sell out???? I mean who in a band doesn't want to sell more records!
also huge disrespect shown to Trevor and indeed the boys themselves.
All I did was presented the article someone else wrote and gave my opinion on their new style? I'm allowed to do that and still be a fan lmao
A great first album but it has been completely downhill since then. The fact that they are regarded so highly is an indication of how far the music business and current music has fallen. The emperor has no clothes.
I honestly think Skinty Fia was better than Dogrel but to each their own ig
Stop overreacting. They are a rock solid band with original sounding music and a willingness to develop and change their art . They are even I would say underrated compared to others in their field.
Dogrel was Gold. Heros death was good, but not as good. Skinty fia was great ,almost as good as dogrel. And now romance ,imho, is as good as dogrel. i would rank them like : dogrel, romance, skinty fia and heros death.
Hard agree. It's been a law of diminishing returns from them since Dogrel, with this new record being their 2nd best. They are so boring live these days too.
And their nu-rave wardrobe is hilarious
This reaction is to conformistic for my taste. They are real artists of our time. Specially Grain Chatten.
i enjoy primitive music 🪨
