He is the (Artist of the Decade) with over 300 million album/single sold.

I was a metal purist aswell back in the day, but Eminem always had a special place in my heart. By then I've really expanded my mind for more music, of all styles.

When I was younger and ignoant I was that asshole that would not give rap a chance...and then someone at work put this album on and my musical world was shattered. I am so glad you are getting to hear this masterpiece of music.
I grew up on Hip Hop but I listen to everything from country to salsa. I used to try and convince stubborn rockers that they should give it a chance because it is its own style of poetry. That a beatbox would make Marie sound than any instrument can make.
Marshall Mathers is his personal life in his music, normally very dark. Eminem is his rap career, normally very serious. Slim Shady is his jokey alter ego, usually funny but dark. Marshall Mathers is easily my fave as it dives into his personal life and his darkest music is some his best.
Right when he said "My mom was fucked up" I knew he was gonna enjoy this album. Theres a reason why this album is 10x multi-platinum , diamond certified.
This is his best album by far... The only one that is close is Slim Shady LP I'm a huge Em fan but a few of his albums are kinda lame and goofy. (Encore, recovery, relapse)

When this cd came out it was legitimately a full blown experience...buying the cd...going home and listening to it from beginning to end...lots of nostalgia and it's a classic album.

He also wrote it in like 1 or 2 days, following the meeting parodied on the track before it. He was told by the label none of the songs were single worthy for radio and he had to come up with a new song or no album. He went home, locked himself in the lab and wrote the way I am. It's an amazing song.
As a fan of a variety of music genres from different eras, I confidently believe Marshall Mathers LP is one of the greatest albums ever released. The word "timeless" is thrown around too much but it actually applies here. I sometimes forget how spectacular this is, until I hear it again. Respect

All the songs on this album are good in their own merits. Especially if you know what was happening at the time (pretty sure that’s why he didn’t care much for Marshall Mathers, you’d have to know what was going on to get it better)
I remember listening to this album when it came out and being blown away, ever since then, I've been a die hard Eminem fan despite being a metalhead. I haven't listened to this album in a few years but listening along to it with you while you react is honestly a trip down memory lane. Awesome video.
As a metal head myself, I love seeing other metal fans appreciate the genius that is Eminem. His lyricism is unmatched and his sense of humor is on point, as you noticed. Also, there is a lot of crossover fans of Korn (and metal in general) and Eminem.
Korn, Em, Blink, Greenday, No Doubt, Dre, Snoop, and others in this late 90s early 2000s. I love it all. This era of music was middle school through high school. Eminem though is probably the best artist out of the era. I hope people appreciate his music in 50+ years like people with the beatles, rush, U2, etc

Jeremy Hodges I can relate, but I’m also lucky that I wasn’t able to check out every classic as they happened. I was able to experience 2Pac’s *All Eyez on Me* and *The Don Killuminatti* for the first time a few months ago, and I was blown away.
Man this is the peak of Eminem right here. MMLP was his best album along with Eminem Show. Young, hungry, aggressive Slim Shady slaying any rappers on that era.

Harold Pierce rakim is a goat, but EM took it way to a next level, he rhymes almost every word while still telling you a story, it's crazy. L and Pun didn't have much time, they woulda been as good as EM...well not good as him...but hella good

I wouldn't call him the greatest lyricist, but he is by far the greatest wordsmith by a mile. The way he combines words, creates flows, emphasizing syllables, bending words to fit in a scheme, while telling a funny, coherent line is downright genius.
The song "Marshall Mathers" is one of those songs that you have to know previous knowledge about his career and all the drama surrounding his career in order to appreciate the lyrics, that's it man. 🤘🤘
Yeah I address this in my text dump. There's a lot of references to his "beef" with Insane Clown Posse who gave him a very dumb "diss" name which he destroys in one line. But, not to speak for Metal Biker Dude, but I think it wasn't the lyrics (as he compliments them) but rather the lack of a bass line & the use of a guitar (which he reaches for after).

i thought recovery was. i thought 'not afraid' was his best lead single ever. but to be honest, even through his weak albums, his multisyllabics were always crazy as hell he was a prolific writer.
*Encore* was by far his worst album, but it’s still an above-average rap album. It’s like Metallica’s *St. Anger* : it’s a good album until you realize which act released it, at which point you notice the steep decline in quality. Fortunately for both examples, they’ve both had better albums since.

3 years late to the party but I gotta say it: watching you discover this album brought me back to when I was going into the 9th grade and heard it for the first time myself. We can never get the initial reaction back so it was great to witness this. Thank you for that. Also, those moments when eminem's word play and humor make you want to pause the song and let it sink in.. he has never lost that, either. I think (at least to me) that is part of his longevity. Listening to any of his releases take me back to being a kid and being transfixed by his wordplay, delivery and humor
The last song is D12, which is Eminems band, they are his closest friends. It is rather important to understand D12, if you want to understand Slim Shady. D12 was at first basically just a pact between them that the first person who gets famous, makes all the others famous too, it was Proofs (Eminems best friend since high school, he died 2006 after being shot in the head) idea to found the group, he also had the idea that all of the 6 members should have 2 personalities, therefore D12. He had also the idea that they should say things that would be over the limit and just saying whatever they want, but also funny things, like saying to fuck his own mom and having a new brother and son at the same time, it was already Bizarres (the other guy on the song Amityville) style so he inspired the others in the group and fundamentally is responsible for this famous style of Slim Shady, it is also probably why you thought that Bizarre is the counterpart to Eminem, which is actually very true, but Bizarre is still the most crazy one in the group, to name all members and the second personality: Eminem - Slim Shady Proof - Derty Harry Bizarre - Red Head Kon Artist - Mr Porter Kuniva - Rondell Beene Swift - Swifty McVay I recommend the song "My Band" from them, especially the music video, which is very funny. His first album "Infinite" has absolutely no Slim Shady influence and therefore are the song themes completely different, because it was before they came up with this idea, so even though the album was incredible good, people were not buying it because it was not unique and too similiar to other rappers at that time, it only sold like 1000 copies, even though the album is incredible, especially in terms of rhymes, but that´s basically it, besides that it was indeed not unique, but the title song "Infinite" is in my personally opinion one of the best songs he ever did. I think to understand Eminems music you have to understand his story, which is in rap music often the case, because of the heavy focus on the lyrics. If you really want to know more about Eminem, I recommend his book "The Way I Am", which is like his songs very well written, I think most of things I wrote are also written in the book.

Paul is Paul Rosenberg, Eminem's longtime manager and attorney. Just recently he became CEO of Def Jam Records. Steve Berman is an executive for Interscope Records, which is the label that owns Aftermath (which is Dre's label). Steve is a cool guy. He's featured in that new 4-part HBO Documentary Series "The Defiant Ones" that timelines the careers and partnership of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre (including their signing of Eminem). Also worth noting: around 53:25 he starts his verse, "I take 7 kids from Columbine, stand em all in line. Add an AK47, a revolver and 9" but even his explicit version of the album censored half of the line (thanks FCC)! Not many people have had their explicit versions of music censored, but Eminem is one of them. The other guy on "Bitch Please II" was Xzibit, and yes, he was the actor for the lunch truck rapper from 8 Mile! Good catch! Also, Ken Kaniff isn't a real person. Kenneth Kaniff from Connecticut is a reoccuring character Eminem has used in skits for many albums. Basically just some gay, weird, overly sexual creep. As far as a Dre album, he's got 3 solo albums. The Chronic is his debut solo, featuring a lot of Snoop Dogg. Total masterpiece. Really, any of his 3 albums would be a good pick. He's such a perfectionist that he only releases albums that are perfect in his eyes - so they're all equally impressive. But if you do The Chronic, you can basically count that as a Snoop album as well because he's on almost every song. But yes, Dre is tough to get on UA-cam. But, if you want a Snoop album anyways, Doggystyle is by far his best. I stumbled across this video but I'm really digging your content. Keep it up man. I just spent two hours watching a react vid and I don’t hate myself for doing it. Great balance of play and pause...and when you did pause, I was interested every time. Already liked and subscribed, but I gotta say that you have a talent for this. Most react vids are garbage, but you killed it IMO. As to suggestions, I like Snoop, but never listened to any of his albums. Dre on the other hand...Dr. Dre - The Chonic, has always been one of my favorite albums. The kind of album that you listen front to back and enjoy it all. Also very curious to see what you think of Macklemore’s album “The Heist”, because that’s another that I enjoyed top to bottom.

Just watched this entire video. I loved your take on the album! Reminds me of my first time listening to it! You asked for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg recommendations which are similar to this album. I would strongly recommend Dr. Dre's "2001" and Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle." Those are albums with somewhat similar vibes to this album. And the Dr. Dre production on both of those albums is nothing short of phenomenal. Much respect for what you are doing, and I'm looking forward to continue taking this journey with you!

Thing that makes these records so amazing is dre is top tier producer, he has more dimensions to his art than most. Em has the same kind of depth to his lyrics and when you put them together they are able to create patterns and harmonies on levels that people don't even understand for the most part. It's never been done belle before, and i don't know if it ever will be done again. Perfect storm.

OutKast only has the highest selling because it's a double album and they count as two per purchase. And even then, I'm not even sure sold more than MMLP.

Glad to see such a positive reception to this album. That's the thing about Eminem - he transcends the genre and pulls in people from all walks of life. He's easy to relate to for anyone who's had a rough spot in life. He speaks to issues that everyone else seemed to shy away from, and he took the negative press and turned it into lyrical gold. This might be his best album of all time, when he was lyrical, hard-hitting, solid beats all around, and his trademark comedy thrown in on a couple tracks. Eminem is one of those superstars who comes along once a generation. Now he has matured, but he has kept his lyrical skills and while not everyone likes his new content, he's using his platform to speak on issues that matter to him. You can't help but respect the fact that he was a high school dropout who took his pain and made a better life for himself and his kids from it.
I'm not sure how this ended up in my recommended videos but I'm glad it did. Seeing genuine reactions to my childhood CD's is very refreshing. Love your reactions on the intentionally funny parts because its the exact same thing I did.. a "WTF" followed by laughter. Except I was in my teens so awesome to see this transcend generations with the same reactions. Well done.

Kim is just one of those songs that has so much raw emotion that it’s hard for me to even listen to the song. You should do the Eminem show though, it was one of those albums that originally wasn’t liked by critics and was later deemed one of his masterpieces
Just your sheer dedication to this album has made me give you a sub (and I'm only 2 songs in lol). I highly recommend checking out The Marshall Mathers LP2. I think, pound for pound, it's his best stuff in general. He also has a sequel to Stan (seeing how much you loved that one) on that album. And to answer your question, Paul Rosenberg is Eminem's manager & one of his best friends in general. As well, overall, Dr. Dre is often viewed as one of the best (if not the best, he is in my eyes) hip-hop producers of all time. Once you've heard enough of Dre's beats (and I'm sure it'll be easier where you're a producer as well), you'll be able to pick them out of a crowd, they're that iconic.
He raps under 3 persona's Slim Shady -a character he created as his alter ego that does and says the most offensive things you can think of Eminem - these are his songs were he is the biggest, baddest rapper or talks about rap game Marshall - these are his more personal songs. Most of these are in his later albums.

Rapping under several persona's is old news in hip hop. RedMan is one of Eminem's biggest inspirations- one of them. Anyway... RedMan used several persona's bck in the eighties. Alot of rappers do it.
I loved this era of Em. I grew up on this. I remember having some of his songs from his first 2 albums on burnt CDs. I would record stuff off the radio otherwise. Em was just so cool, unique, wild and skilled! Hilarious too!

Eminem can relate to a 9 year old immigrant from Puerto Rico in Miami, to a 53 year old white lady like yourself in Atlanta, to a 25 year old black kid in Chicago, to a white teenager on a trailer park in Seattle, and that's why his music will stand the test of time. Wrote a music history paper on this album. Arguably one of the most important albums in the history of hip hop and rap music. Without this album, rap music does not make it into the mainstream the way that it has in the last 20 years. Respect to Biggie, Pac,, Jay-Z, Cube, Nas, Busta Rhymes, the list goes on... but this album was a crossover that no one could have anticipated. Meanwhile, Dre. still reigns king.
You're not wrong. Eminem dragged casual and white fans over to rap and hip hop. A whole generation of kids who otherwise wouldn't have listened to rap were suddenly the target market from 2000 onwards. It was a huge feat for a rap album to go more than 1 x Platinum in the 90s - All Eyez on Me went multi-platinum posthumously, The Chronic sold a few million, Biggie went 2 x Platinum, and they were anomalies for Hip Hop. Suddenly this white guy comes in and sells Nsync numbers eventually going Diamond (twice) with legit no-holds rap lifted from black rappers, and the other white and casual fans get into it. It really did open the door for rap to go mainstream when previously it had been second tier - 50 Cent, Kanye, Lil Wayne all go multi platinum in the 00s and its standard for hip hop albums to go at least Platinum, and its been THE main genre for the last 15 years. Its a shame that society needed a white guy to make this amazing genre seem accessible to the mainstream but oh well.
@@sjn6704 your paper was really fascinating I bet. Unfortunately that trend of Black music entering the mainstream through white artists is nothing new. Look at how spirituals, jazz, blues, rock, and eventually hip hop all began with Black musicians and gained widespread popularity mainly through white artists. This is not to discount the greatness of those Black artists because to this day they remain some of the biggest influences on American culture.

It's a beautiful thing when people from opposite genre preferences can sit, listen, react, and most importantly appreciate one another's preferred music genres. He is the (Artist of the Decade) with over 300 million album/single sold.

I grew up on Hip Hop but I listen to everything from country to salsa. I used to try and convince stubborn rockers that they should give it a chance because it is its own style of poetry. That a beatbox would make Marie sound than any instrument can make.

Slim Shady is his jokey alter ego, usually funny but dark.
Marshall Mathers is easily my fave as it dives into his personal life and his darkest music is some his best.

“The way I am” was actually one of the first songs Eminem produced himself
He also wrote it in like 1 or 2 days, following the meeting parodied on the track before it. He was told by the label none of the songs were single worthy for radio and he had to come up with a new song or no album. He went home, locked himself in the lab and wrote the way I am.
It's an amazing song.

As a metal head myself, I love seeing other metal fans appreciate the genius that is Eminem. His lyricism is unmatched and his sense of humor is on point, as you noticed. Also, there is a lot of crossover fans of Korn (and metal in general) and Eminem.
Korn, Em, Blink, Greenday, No Doubt, Dre, Snoop, and others in this late 90s early 2000s. I love it all. This era of music was middle school through high school. Eminem though is probably the best artist out of the era. I hope people appreciate his music in 50+ years like people with the beatles, rush, U2, etc

Jeremy Hodges I can relate, but I’m also lucky that I wasn’t able to check out every classic as they happened. I was able to experience 2Pac’s *All Eyez on Me* and *The Don Killuminatti* for the first time a few months ago, and I was blown away.
Man this is the peak of Eminem right here. MMLP was his best album along with Eminem Show. Young, hungry, aggressive Slim Shady slaying any rappers on that era.

I wouldn't call him the greatest lyricist, but he is by far the greatest wordsmith by a mile. The way he combines words, creates flows, emphasizing syllables, bending words to fit in a scheme, while telling a funny, coherent line is downright genius.

Yeah I address this in my text dump. There's a lot of references to his "beef" with Insane Clown Posse who gave him a very dumb "diss" name which he destroys in one line. But, not to speak for Metal Biker Dude, but I think it wasn't the lyrics (as he compliments them) but rather the lack of a bass line & the use of a guitar (which he reaches for after).
It's also hard to like a song that you talk over the entire time. Talking about unrelated things. He missed 80% of the subject matter.
That, "little Eric jumps over the terrace," line is a jab at Eric Clapton, who's son died after falling off of a ledge. The nanny was watching him. Damn.

i thought recovery was. i thought 'not afraid' was his best lead single ever. but to be honest, even through his weak albums, his multisyllabics were always crazy as hell he was a prolific writer.
I don’t like his newer albums, I stop listening after that curtain call the hits.
*Encore* was by far his worst album, but it’s still an above-average rap album. It’s like Metallica’s *St. Anger* : it’s a good album until you realize which act released it, at which point you notice the steep decline in quality. Fortunately for both examples, they’ve both had better albums since.

3 years late to the party but I gotta say it: watching you discover this album brought me back to when I was going into the 9th grade and heard it for the first time myself. We can never get the initial reaction back so it was great to witness this. Thank you for that.
Also, those moments when eminem's word play and humor make you want to pause the song and let it sink in.. he has never lost that, either. I think (at least to me) that is part of his longevity. Listening to any of his releases take me back to being a kid and being transfixed by his wordplay, delivery and humor

The last song is D12, which is Eminems band, they are his closest friends. It is rather important to understand D12, if you want to understand Slim Shady.
D12 was at first basically just a pact between them that the first person who gets famous, makes all the others famous too, it was Proofs (Eminems best friend since high school, he died 2006 after being shot in the head) idea to found the group, he also had the idea that all of the 6 members should have 2 personalities, therefore D12.
He had also the idea that they should say things that would be over the limit and just saying whatever they want, but also funny things, like saying to fuck his own mom and having a new brother and son at the same time, it was already Bizarres (the other guy on the song Amityville) style so he inspired the others in the group and fundamentally is responsible for this famous style of Slim Shady, it is also probably why you thought that Bizarre is the counterpart to Eminem, which is actually very true, but Bizarre is still the most crazy one in the group, to name all members and the second personality:

His first album "Infinite" has absolutely no Slim Shady influence and therefore are the song themes completely different, because it was before they came up with this idea, so even though the album was incredible good, people were not buying it because it was not unique and too similiar to other rappers at that time, it only sold like 1000 copies, even though the album is incredible, especially in terms of rhymes, but that´s basically it, besides that it was indeed not unique, but the title song "Infinite" is in my personally opinion one of the best songs he ever did.
I think to understand Eminems music you have to understand his story, which is in rap music often the case, because of the heavy focus on the lyrics. If you really want to know more about Eminem, I recommend his book "The Way I Am", which is like his songs very well written, I think most of things I wrote are also written in the book.
This one of the greatest album of all time not just in the rap but every genre. Eminem’s “the eminem show” is also an absolutely amazing album.

hello Sure Infinite is quite good but it’s not better than the MMLP, Slim Shady LP or The Eminem Show. It’s arguably better than the rest.

Paul is Paul Rosenberg, Eminem's longtime manager and attorney. Just recently he became CEO of Def Jam Records.
Steve Berman is an executive for Interscope Records, which is the label that owns Aftermath (which is Dre's label). Steve is a cool guy. He's featured in that new 4-part HBO Documentary Series "The Defiant Ones" that timelines the careers and partnership of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre (including their signing of Eminem).
Also worth noting: around 53:25 he starts his verse, "I take 7 kids from Columbine, stand em all in line. Add an AK47, a revolver and 9" but even his explicit version of the album censored half of the line (thanks FCC)! Not many people have had their explicit versions of music censored, but Eminem is one of them.
The other guy on "Bitch Please II" was Xzibit, and yes, he was the actor for the lunch truck rapper from 8 Mile! Good catch!
Also, Ken Kaniff isn't a real person. Kenneth Kaniff from Connecticut is a reoccuring character Eminem has used in skits for many albums. Basically just some gay, weird, overly sexual creep.
As far as a Dre album, he's got 3 solo albums. The Chronic is his debut solo, featuring a lot of Snoop Dogg. Total masterpiece. Really, any of his 3 albums would be a good pick. He's such a perfectionist that he only releases albums that are perfect in his eyes - so they're all equally impressive. But if you do The Chronic, you can basically count that as a Snoop album as well because he's on almost every song. But yes, Dre is tough to get on UA-cam. But, if you want a Snoop album anyways, Doggystyle is by far his best.

I just spent two hours watching a react vid and I don’t hate myself for doing it. Great balance of play and pause...and when you did pause, I was interested every time. Already liked and subscribed, but I gotta say that you have a talent for this. Most react vids are garbage, but you killed it IMO. As to suggestions, I like Snoop, but never listened to any of his albums. Dre on the other hand...Dr. Dre - The Chonic, has always been one of my favorite albums. The kind of album that you listen front to back and enjoy it all. Also very curious to see what you think of Macklemore’s album “The Heist”, because that’s another that I enjoyed top to bottom.

Just watched this entire video. I loved your take on the album! Reminds me of my first time listening to it! You asked for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg recommendations which are similar to this album. I would strongly recommend Dr. Dre's "2001" and Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle." Those are albums with somewhat similar vibes to this album. And the Dr. Dre production on both of those albums is nothing short of phenomenal. Much respect for what you are doing, and I'm looking forward to continue taking this journey with you!

Thing that makes these records so amazing is dre is top tier producer, he has more dimensions to his art than most. Em has the same kind of depth to his lyrics and when you put them together they are able to create patterns and harmonies on levels that people don't even understand for the most part. It's never been done belle before, and i don't know if it ever will be done again. Perfect storm.

Glad to see such a positive reception to this album. That's the thing about Eminem - he transcends the genre and pulls in people from all walks of life. He's easy to relate to for anyone who's had a rough spot in life. He speaks to issues that everyone else seemed to shy away from, and he took the negative press and turned it into lyrical gold. This might be his best album of all time, when he was lyrical, hard-hitting, solid beats all around, and his trademark comedy thrown in on a couple tracks.
Eminem is one of those superstars who comes along once a generation. Now he has matured, but he has kept his lyrical skills and while not everyone likes his new content, he's using his platform to speak on issues that matter to him. You can't help but respect the fact that he was a high school dropout who took his pain and made a better life for himself and his kids from it.

I'm not sure how this ended up in my recommended videos but I'm glad it did. Seeing genuine reactions to my childhood CD's is very refreshing. Kim is just one of those songs that has so much raw emotion that it’s hard for me to even listen to the song. You should do the Eminem show though, it was one of those albums that originally wasn’t liked by critics and was later deemed one of his masterpieces

Just your sheer dedication to this album has made me give you a sub (and I'm only 2 songs in lol). I highly recommend checking out The Marshall Mathers LP2. I think, pound for pound, it's his best stuff in general. He also has a sequel to Stan (seeing how much you loved that one) on that album.
And to answer your question, Paul Rosenberg is Eminem's manager & one of his best friends in general. As well, overall, Dr. Dre is often viewed as one of the best (if not the best, he is in my eyes) hip-hop producers of all time. Once you've heard enough of Dre's beats (and I'm sure it'll be easier where you're a producer as well), you'll be able to pick them out of a crowd, they're that iconic.

I loved this era of Em. I grew up on this. I remember having some of his songs from his first 2 albums on burnt CDs. I would record stuff off the radio otherwise. Em was just so cool, unique, wild and skilled! Hilarious too!

Eminem can relate to a 9 year old immigrant from Puerto Rico in Miami, to a 53 year old white lady like yourself in Atlanta, to a 25 year old black kid in Chicago, to a white teenager on a trailer park in Seattle, and that's why his music will stand the test of time. Wrote a music history paper on this album. Arguably one of the most important albums in the history of hip hop and rap music. Without this album, rap music does not make it into the mainstream the way that it has in the last 20 years. Respect to Biggie, Pac,, Jay-Z, Cube, Nas, Busta Rhymes, the list goes on... but this album was a crossover that no one could have anticipated.
Meanwhile, Dre. still reigns king.
Eminem wasn't wrong when he said his music reached suburban white kids. It actually did. It gave them SOME way to rebel.
You're not wrong. Eminem dragged casual and white fans over to rap and hip hop. A whole generation of kids who otherwise wouldn't have listened to rap were suddenly the target market from 2000 onwards. It was a huge feat for a rap album to go more than 1 x Platinum in the 90s - All Eyez on Me went multi-platinum posthumously, The Chronic sold a few million, Biggie went 2 x Platinum, and they were anomalies for Hip Hop. Suddenly this white guy comes in and sells Nsync numbers eventually going Diamond (twice) with legit no-holds rap lifted from black rappers, and the other white and casual fans get into it. It really did open the door for rap to go mainstream when previously it had been second tier - 50 Cent, Kanye, Lil Wayne all go multi platinum in the 00s and its standard for hip hop albums to go at least Platinum, and its been THE main genre for the last 15 years.
Its a shame that society needed a white guy to make this amazing genre seem accessible to the mainstream but oh well.
@@sjn6704 your paper was really fascinating I bet. Unfortunately that trend of Black music entering the mainstream through white artists is nothing new. Look at how spirituals, jazz, blues, rock, and eventually hip hop all began with Black musicians and gained widespread popularity mainly through white artists. This is not to discount the greatness of those Black artists because to this day they remain some of the biggest influences on American culture.

It's a beautiful thing when people from opposite genre preferences can sit, listen, react, and most importantly appreciate one another's preferred music genres.
