- In this video, I hike a lollipop loop hike up the Huntington Ravine Trail to Mt Washington and down Tuckerman Ravine. The Huntington Ravine Trail is at the Pinnacle of the Terrifying 25 in New Hampshire and lived up to its name. This was for sure the most challenging regular hike I've ever ascended in my life but it quickly became my all time favorite so far! A level 2-3 scramble for over half a mile, with some 40-50 degree pitches, this was a challenge to say the least. Beautiful, rugged, and a challenge for your entire body. I Highly recommend this one to more seasoned hikers and climbers who want a fun day of scrambling through giant boulders, talus rock and some steep slab that requires some careful hand and foot holds. 10/10!
Please don't attempt this hike in bad weather, improper footwear, or without proper knowledge and some experience with climbing/scrambling in level 3 terrain.
Ensure you have proper food, water, and gear and always remember to turn around at the first sign of bad weather. The mountains will be there next time. And of course - LNT! :)

I lived and worked as Hermitt Lake Caretaker in Tuckermans Ravine for 3 years all year and i agree this is a challenging trail that many people get thrills hiking. I personally enjoyed climbing up Pinnacale Gully or nearby having a quick snack in the summit building then down climbing the Huntington trail. I only hated this trail when someone got hurt on it and we did night rescue with few extra hands to help. Nicely done.

I'm in my mid-seventies, been years since my hiking days, going up is a challenge, but I remember going down to be even more strenuous, besides using a completely different group of muscles...ya did well young lady, keep it happening! 🏔️💪✌️🤠

ok, if you want to write a long story, you have to do it here and not on the comment section of those quickie video. so here is my boring story, but it's ok because I'm 75 and i like to ramble on. so in 1968 i was working at the Spalding Inn, a very nice expensive that had great food in Whitefield, New Hampshire. a friend from PA drove his old car up to visit. we drove his 1956 Chrysler which he named Clara Bell. (that was the name of something on the old old Howdy Doody show) and it was a great trip of this amazing mountain. middle of summer and it was a HOT summer but it was quite chilly at the top. so we drove the car down but it was dangerous because old cars didn't have disk brakes, but drum brakes and when they get hot, you have NO BRAKES. you have to pull over and just wait till they cool. Ok that is my first experience with Mt Washington. would love to go back. 7 years ago, i was cleaning the Veterans Administration and an older doctor said that her 95 year old father RAN up mt Washington, yes when he was 95!! he has just done it!!!!! Anyway, that is the story. thanks for being nice

In 1968, I was 20 years old and backpacking in Viet Nam, least that’s what they told me. I did backpack the White Mountains through the 70s and 80s though. I still get up,but at 78 I don’t hike much.

I live in Twin Mt. and when I was a kid, my parents and I used to go to the Spalding Inn. As I recall, it's behind the Mt. View Grand? It was next to the golf course. The Mt. View is under new ownership. Whitefield is still ice, but we got us some drug dealers here now too..😢

Thank you for posting this! I never did hike Huntington Ravine so it was fun seeing it from the a hiker's perspective! To summit Washington it was always Tuckerman Ravine/Lion Head or a trail from the south (can't remember which ones). I did try skiing in Tuckerman's once, but that was when I was young and foolish!
When a senior in high school, during a skip school day in late spring, my friends skied down the ravine but I was stupid enough to go down on a plastic toboggan. Me and the toboggan soon parted ways and I was lucky, I was able to slide down on my butt and didn't start tumbling. Yeah, I've hiked Tuckerman's, Lion's Head and Ammonoosic from the cog railroad side but was never brave enough to try Huntington's and after watching this video, it was a very wise choice not to.

Back in the early seventies, we used to climb Mt Washinton all the time. In the spring we would ski Huntington and Tuckerman's. Most times when we would go up Tuckerman and return down Lions head. I got caught on Lions head in the fog once, I had to sit down for about a half hour because I could not see where I was going, Luckily, I stopped. Thanks for this video.

A buddy and I hiked up this trail with full packs, back when I was in my 20s. It's a hike that I still remember 40 years later! Watching this video brought back a lot of memories, most of them scary! lol

Hiked Washington in 1996, parked at Pinkham Notch. It was in September, 75° and sunny when we left the car. Went up the Tuckerman Ravine trail. It was 42° and raining on the summit. None of us had rain gear, we were soaked. Pretty dumb to be so unprepared. God was with us for sure. Took the tram ride back down. It was $20 then.

Both your hike and video were beautifully done. They brought me back to when my nephew and I hiked this about 5 years ago. He was in high school and in great shape. I’m about 40 years older but kept up. Funniest part was across a rock face where he tried his own line above the marked one and got stuck. Bit of a panic but he managed to get across somehow.

Nicely Done Congratulations Watching the video brought back many memories of having climbed Huntington's four times and by bad judgement went down once. I have enjoyed many of the trails on the mountain but this one is also my favorite. I liked that from the Tuckerman's Trail it is more of a footpath and also due to the difficulties a lot less people

@@AmandaDouin we did the saddle trail from chimney pond campground. Our base camp was in a lean-to which we hiked to on the first day and then sumitted the following. We didn't do the knife edge trail but I've always wanted to as well. Katahdin is no joke that's for sure, especially in October we had snow above and below the treeline. The rock scrambling was treacherous.

Great video. Very genuine work. You should be proud of yourself to do that hike solo. Thanks for sharing. We were N.H. natives and spent a lot of time camping and light hiking in the Whites. I only attempted Mt. Washington once but started too late in the day to do the full hike. Always wanted to get back to it but can only enjoy other peoples' hikes on UT thanks to hikers like you!

My grandfather hiked Mt. Washington twice about 90 years ago. I have never done it but now, thanks to you sharing this video, I can definitely say that he probably did NOT go up Huntington Ravine since he only had 1 leg! I was getting nervous, sweaty palms just watching some of what you had to climb over and around.

I've hiked every range trail of the Presidentials. The best part is the start up when you see and read the infamous warning sign. As you can understand when it tells you if you're not prepared for it...turn back now!!!

Sometime in the early 1950’s, my late Father skied Tuckerman’s Ravine. He had to hike up with his skis on his back. Heavy wood ski’s and lace-up ski boots.
Wow! Impressive, especially with the older equipment. 💗💗💗💪🏻 I’m not a skier so I admire people who adventure in those outdoor activities.
Fun trail! Rock climbing in the Huntington Ravine area, we drove up the Auto Road and parked at the Alpine Garden trailhead. Hiked along the Alpine Garden trail then down the Huntington Ravine trail in order to rock climb in the ravine area. Met a lot of hikers ascending the trail. Such a fun downclimb! Cheers!!

Huntington Ravine has been on my list for awhile, but I think our first trip up Washington will probably be Ammonoosuc. Did the majority of Boott Spur two years ago and loved it. Highly suggest it as an alternative trail. Tons of nice vertically.

I want to share a perspective, that caught me by surprise
...Caught me by surprise, a few years ago, and could have cost me 'my life'; Which could be similarly applied to a rock- scrambling scenario ~ 'alone' & 'exhausted' on a steep-grade of descent, in a wilderness setting.
I was climbing a magnolia tree, in my backyard, with a chainsaw on a rope, to trim some limbs, that were hanging over my house.
[Having been strong and athletic-enough, all my life, to do most any activity i wanted, YET NOW, even though i had experienced many joint injuries/surgeries, and in my late 60's, with a 'male ego', it just wasn't acceptable to think that i had 'limits' to what was reasonable.]
I was 'fine', climbing & cutting the limbs, only UNTIL i was ready to descend the tree, and was 'startled' to suddenly realize, that i had spent so much of my strength, that i was NOW So Weak, that i was 'bear-hugging' the tree, struggling to hold on, just to get down without falling.
Oh my goodness, I’m glad you’re ok. This is a very valid point during any hike. I make sure that I do not get to the point of no return. If I feel like I’m not going to be able to make the climb, I would turn around. I would have not gone the last mile to the summit of Wa if I felt my legs didn’t have the strength for the descent. Fortunately my legs felt great on this hike, a little tired during part of the final push on Hunt but I knew I was fine. I get the not wanting to turn around part though. I made this mistake during two different days my body was showing signs of heat exaustion and I almost didn’t make it back to my car. I learned my body better and now know the signs of when stopping and going back are a must. 💗💗💗 Thanks for taking the time to share your story. It takes humility to learn and grow, not only sharing success’ but also failure is part of that journey. Apppreciate you!!

The reason i commented, was mostly to Remind You, that there are those of US, who share Your 'Passion' & 'Style' of hiking, especially for the 'rugged' boulder terrain [more so, than the green tunnel, and 'hostel/hotel hopping' (deli-blazing)]; Though We, for sundry reasons, Struggle to, or simply Can't, literally 'get out there', and Grasp the Boulders, Embrace the Challenges, See the 'new' Vistas, and take in Deep Breaths of Air above the treeline; YET We CAN/DO Celebrate and Enjoy Those of YOU, Who share Your Adventures with Us.
The Story, i shared with You, about being exhausted in a tree, with a chainsaw, was a real 'eye-opener' for me.
Many of Us were 'Created' by Christ Jesus, our 'Maker', with a very Resilient heart, mind & spirit to 'Continue' inspite of Losses and Struggles; However, my Personal circumstance, has progressively been in a declining state, for many years, which has brought me to a very Perplexing place ... Being a few months from 70 yrs old, and most 'Thankful' to Jesus Christ, my Loving Lord, for many Wonderful Adventures in This Life, Yet i/we Never want to Quit! ~ With the flip-side, of being in a quandary, as to what level of hiking is tolerable and reasonable, for me. I am determined to be as active as i can, for as long as i can; Like my Dad ('Shorty'), who (at 5' 2" tall) was still loading/delivering 26 bales of hay to a horse farm, when he was 75 yrs old. However, being realistic, about my own expectations, my Dad had not experienced nearly the number of surgical issues, as i have.
Just for a little parental background ~ Mom & Dad's spirits were SO characterized by STRENGTH & LOVE. (...Married for @ 62 years.) One of MOM's last statements to me (in her 80's), was something i had Never heard Her say. While in her hospital bed, She said, "Steve, I'm Tired." (She served her family and church faithfully, as a very strong, hard-working 'can-do' lady. As one of 13 children, in a family of 'dirt-poor' sharecroppers, she was picking 200 lbs of cotton/day, when only 16 yrs old.) ~ DAD was an airplane mechanic, in the navy, (stationed at Pearl Harber, during 'the war'). He dropped out of school and went to work with some lumberjacks, (as a middle-school aged boy) to help make money for the family, due to his dad's alcoholism/illness. i Never heard my Dad Complain about this Circumstance. When settling his estate, i came across a deed, inwhich he and his mother had put their money together to buy a place, for his alcoholic brother's family to live ~ Just to give You an idea, of His Character. He remarried at 89 (Can you imagine dropping your Dad off at a hotel, with a new Bride, at age 89? Ha!); And, at 90, the DMV renewed His dr. lic. for 5 more yrs, with no restrictions. He was hoping to be 100, though Conjestive Heart Failure eventually brought Him down. His last words to me, in the hospital, were, "I don't Want to be here, but I Need to be.
... They Never wanted to quit!
... TODAY ... Having had 6 months of Chemo (over 25 yrs ago now), which caused much loss of muscle tissue; Especially in my hands, seriously affecting my grip strength), a complete Mastectomy (leaving no stomach or pouch); As well as extensive dental work, which would furthur complicate hygiene on trail), 3 cervical disc surgeries, back surgery, spinal injections, 2 rotator-cuff surgeries, both bicep tendons torn, several damaged nerves, arthritis in my hands, weak previously- injured ankles, patella tendonitis, multiple eye surgeries, and more ... i'm like my truck ~ 'High Mileage' ~ Which i bought used, in 2004, and still driving it; Even after it has been 'totalled' and repaired twice!
ALL THAT to say this, that i feel like my body is so fragile, that it wouldn't take much, in a wilderness setting, to find myself in a miserable, if not 'life-threatening' circumstance.
My question to Experienced Hikers, as Yourself, would be ... Where should i draw my lines, when deciding on limitations?

Smart to take the lollipop loop. The alternative trail all the way down Huntington Ravine is long, flat and very boring once you exit the steep trail. I respect this young women's athleticism. She worked hard to make this tough hike in one day...and luckily, no sudden storms above tree line. I've been caught in severe wind, rain, and hail with little warning on nice summer hikes. Pack light but smart. It can truly be life threatening where she travelled, and this point was overlooked in her video, but without words she's living proof of a strong, in-shape woman of character and soul.

Side note - I was wearing a larger pack for this because I’m trying to strengthen for bigger hikes in the future. Great Huntington Ravine hike, Nice you posted it. I remember coming to rocks the size of a small house at the beginning of the ravine and I remember that last bit of scrambling over that flat rock, you brought it all back. I did a solo Loop Hike back in the 1990's, up Huntington Ravine, crossed the Alpine Garden trail (some flowers blooming by the little stream, it was late May/early June or so.) down The Raymond path...I took a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey on the Raymond Path--lol...it was all downhill to my tent site. Fun Adventurous times...

New subscriber, I don't do much rock and mountain climbing anymore as Im 56, ... but do still woods hike or city walk 40 miles a week year round in Maine. Which you know Maine has beautiful hiking. Really enjoyed this video. Awesome job. I use a GoPro on my hikes also.

Chill looking scramble, well done video and good watch! Dont listen tk thw naysayers, there's absolutely nothing wrong with solo hiking. A lot of ny friends are really amazing women and men who do tons of solo hiking and climbing. There is an inherent increase in risk by solo hiking but be responsible for yourself and use sound judgment to the best of your ability out there and you'll be just fine. Theres risk in everything and as you progress more and more into the mountains there will be risks and dangers, thats this life, thats adventure. But YOU are an adventurer! Honestly some of my very best trips have been solo. Im talking setting camp at 3am, in the wind, on a tiny outcropping around 10,000' on my hood with a death fall below me in the vast empty, howling wind darkness. And then solo summiting the next morning, ice and snow climbing through the Pearly Gates, ive done this like 5 times and every time i think about it my heart soars.
You Are Doing Great. Be Safe and get out there as much as you can!
Also, join a climbing gym. So many skills translate and it will put you on thw correct path 🙏

Wow.. I did that one back on 2006 and it was for sure a challenge.. and slower going than most trails without a doubt.. that warning sign wasn't there but they did try and discourage decending via Huntington in the AMC guidebook. I've only gone down that way one time when I was in my early 20's and daring..weather was great at least I was smart enough to consult the summit weather desk.. and in my 40's smarter and only go up that route LoL. Down after via Tuck's like you did is a lot smarter.. glad you had a nice hike and moreso a safe one ! I can't say much cause' I do tend to hike alone b/c of liking to go midweeks days but having a hiking buddy is also a good idea esp on more challenging ones.

I am trying to imagine how that would feel to climb in some of those sections with my body towards the rock, searching for the next good foot placement.. it seems like it would be a much longer going down than going up.. 😅 Thank you for your kind words!!
@@AmandaDouin It was a while back but remember a couple spots turned into a crabwalk.. that time my stepbrother was with me..we had to stop and contemplate the best way. it wasn't fun. Best to go down another route for sure. Ejoy your hiking and staye safe with it. :-)

I hiked a great number of mountains in the Whites, Greens, and Catskills. Even the Chisos in Texas. Bagged alot summits and did it mostly barefoot up and down. Just watch where you place your feet...I'd carry some lite sneakers just in case. My feet were tough
