I am replacing my 2014 Mini next week with the base M4 Mini. The only upgrade will be the RAM. Why? Halfway through the 2014 Mini life, I had to upgrade the RAM myself to the maximum I could install because with an OS upgrade the swap file went crazy and slowed the computer down.

16GB ram is NOT enough, when running Photoshop, Lightroom and Chrome with few tabs open at the same time, you will already be at 20GB ram usage. I went with M4 PRO with 24GB, and 30GB would be ideal, 48GB is a bit too expensive.
macOS is designed to use all available RAM at all times. So to the uninformed it seems like there’s “not enough RAM”. You should instead only use the “memory pressure” graph to the left to see if you’re truly maxing out your available RAM.
@@janplexy If you've only ever seen the memory pressure in yellow and that's the worst it's been, that means you have the perfect amount of RAM. Any more would be a waste. Even 16GB would probably perform fine with your usage, although my personal recommendation would be 24GB.
@@janplexy Like I said, your Mac is supposed to maximize your available RAM and it will almost always use some swap memory too - you can't avoid it. It doesn't mean you need more RAM.

Glad you enjoyed it! I intend to use the base model M4 Mac Mini as my main computer for a few weeks and see how the experience is. I am currently using an M2 Max MacBook Pro.
It would be foolish to buy the mini with only 256 GB of storage. Sure it costs a little more to bump it up but I feel way more comfortable with 1 TB to fall back on and THEN use external storage. 256 GB is just not enough these days.
recently was still running my late 2012 Mac Mini with 16/512 (upgraded to an SSD). It comfortably runs 4 browser windows with 15 tabs each. Seems to manage RAM better than my new (to me) Mac Mini 4 base model.
I just bought an Apple iPad Pro M4 in Europe. It didn’t come with an adapter like they say it does on the website. It’s not 13 inches. It’s 11 inches in actual measurements software doesn’t work with other third-party apps like da Vinci resolve studio, AI iOS 18.1 is childish & only works in Notes & mail - read the fine print because their version of AI gives them access to all your privacy. This whole thing with Apple is just one big F#%!ing joke so stop reinforcing that they’re a good product to use when it’s just a piece of trash. I’m so over the APPLE LIES with your Fries , Disney sales pitch .
I’ve used both and haven’t seen a difference over Bluetooth. I do think it’s more sluggish without the unifying receiver so I’d go with regular. Unfortunately I’ve never used a third party mouse that felt like it was made for Apple, but I think that may be more of Apple’s doing than Logitech etc.
Your first point is accurate. You can't add RAM at a later date. Your subordinate point that you "have to make the correct decision at the time of purchase" is way off base. (At this point, I stopped watching this video because your credibility dropped below a minimum threshold. ). One cannot reasonably predict that a "poor" decision like buying the minimum configuration is wrong. You can buy it, and if it proves inadequate, you can sell it and upgrade to whatever you think your new needs are. Presumably, people buying a Mini are already underserved by their existing devices and buying a vastly improved machine will be an improvement. A big one. Ergo, they made a good choice. Did they solve all future computing problems? No. We never do. Nice clickbait, though. Anything mentioning M4 Mac Mini will get some views. Not mine. Breathless BS about a world-ending $600 "bad" decision might speak to people who obsess about nickels, but for thinking and reasoning people, having a mismatch between needs and specs is familiar territory. The challenge is how to respond to that inevitable condition, not how to avoid it for all time. You should know that. Buy a reasonable configuration consistent with your personal economics and upgrade if you need to. Overthinking is a disease.
I'm having the same problem with the new Asus ProArt 5K that came out last month. I've only seen it being sold in the US so far for $799. We all know they'll just do a find and replace on the $ for £. BenQ have something on the way too, but I can't seem to find pricing or release dates at all. Both use the same panel apprently so it'll end up personal preference or whoever manages to get the better pricing. Asus also have a reputation for pretty mediocre build qualitry on their monitors these days. I'm hoping BenQ can better them there lol.
I completely agree with you. I purchased the base M4 mini because I knew it would be perfect for my use case, and I was right (I've had it for 3 weeks). I already had all the necessary peripherals, including a 2TB external NVME drive.
@@obedboakyedanquah9114 I'm not a developer so I can't give an informed answer. I do MS office work (mostly spreadsheets), movie creation with iMovie using videos from my iPhone, photo editing, etc., no real heavy duty stuff.
I bought the base model. I run android studio and xcode. Working fine without any issues. But remember, android emulator will take more RAM, so better to test using mobile phone. For development purpose base model is enough for me.
For my use case, I opted for the 14 core CPU / 20 core GPU M4 Pro. I left all of the other boxes unchecked. I have a 4TB TB4 external SSD that I swap between my Mac Mini and M4 iPad Pro.
I am not a fan of future proofing, everybody overspends and wastes their money. uThe only people who are real future proofers are upgrading from an Intel Mac mini or intel apple. Even then, a M4 Mac mini is light years ahead of what they have, so no need to future proof.
New sub here. Great channel. Would you be so kind as to answer a few questions. I mostly use Final Cut Pro & Photoshop to create videos on my Billy Luna Crime Stories YT channel. I am working in 1080p, but plan to start working in 4k. Currently I am Using a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD (2TB & 4TB) to edit off whilst using FCP. I like to use Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and 40 web browser tabs open simultaneously. 1) For my needs, which exact configuration of the new M4 Mac Mini should I get? (Pro or no, RAM, SSD) This is the configuration that I have been mulling: $1,799.00 512GB SSD storage Apple M4 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 48GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage 2) What would the practical difference be when using Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and 40 web browser tabs open simultaneously if I just got the base M4 mac mini rather than the M4 Pro mac mini? 3) If I go M4 Pro what would the practical difference (for my use scenarios) be in upgrading from 24 GB memory to 48 GB? 4) Is there any speed or performance advantage in going with a 1 TB SSD vs 512? 5) Do I need to worry about fan noise when I’m recording on camera video or voice over with the M4 Pro mac mini? Thank you!
1. 48GB RAM is probably overkill, but if you have the budget for it, get it, because more RAM is always better and you can't change your mind later. 2. Depends heavily what exactly you're doing within FCP and Photoshop (e.g. how complex are the projects). If you're mostly video editing all day get M4 Pro. 3. Probably a waste of money, I doubt your FCP projects will be super intensive (e.g. lots of 3D effects, noise removal etc). See point 1. 4. 1TB is slightly faster but no real advantage other than being able to store more data on the internal SSD 5. No
why, why, why keep tell people what the won't need. If you are going to get a non upgradable mini, max the memory. 16GB is to little to late apple, great the finally got rid of 8GB but like that was too little. If 16GB was so great why have larger options. And remember the GPU is shared memory.
Australian accent but USD prices? Also, has there ever been a 3rd party mouse with 2 axis scrolling? I have tried other mice but scrolling side to side is essential for Illustrator.
Australian viewers make up about 3% of my audience vs USA viewers who are 20%+, so makes sense to just use USD for simplicity. For 2 axis scrolling, the MX Master 3S has that capability. A vertical scroll wheel on the top and a horizontal scroll wheel on the side. I linked it in the description of this video.
@@CreatedTech I was going to suggest the same. Logitech has a lot of great products that work well with Macs. My personal Logitech mouse is the MX ERGO S Plus trackball mouse. The top scroll wheel can be set up for horizontal scrolling.
@@CreatedTech oh yep, good call. Thanks for the mouse recs, i might have to find somewhere i can test it out. @@Kevin6t8 the trackball is an option i hasn’t considered, do you find that you use the trackball part often? Seems like it would be more intuitive for moving around a workspace in all directions.
@@xDMG15x The trackball is what moves the cursor. It requires less desk real estate than a regular mouse. All of the buttons and scroll wheel work, and can be programmed just like any other Logitech MX mouse. lol. apple charges $200 USD for only 8 gb ram upgrade. PC companies upgrade in 16gb increments and it's a quarter of the price.
apple's 16gb upgrade is $400 USD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's about $600 CAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just for a 16gb upgrade.
1400 and not having a 1Tb as default is insulting when PCIE 4.0 and even 5.0 storage is becoming cheap
What do you think should be the one to go for when making music on logic pro ? Thanks a lot for everything boss
Unfortunately your recommendation isn't available in US. - No featured offers available -, but Amazon offers another cheaper solution for $89. I do not know how it's good.
Nice video, about LG to be honest, it's far from perfect, especially the 34-inch model which you use.
Definitely make a video on the SSD + closure combo, always been curious but looked scary, apparently not!
Could you please do a review on the 14" MacBook pro M4 base model?
I just realised... All three people who own a Thunderbolt 5 peripheral could plug them into the same Mac Mini M4 Pro...
Full video on the external ssd please

Nice tips but you recommend accessories with USB A receiver and Mac Mini doesnt have this type of connectivity. Just USB-C.
Don’t use the receiver then, both have Bluetooth. Otherwise there are adapters.
What was the mistakes btw?
I don't get it... Click bait
Best video on this topic. 👍
@@CreatedTech often in yellow
@@janplexy If you've only ever seen the memory pressure in yellow and that's the worst it's been, that means you have the perfect amount of RAM. Any more would be a waste.
Even 16GB would probably perform fine with your usage, although my personal recommendation would be 24GB.
@ i didn’t want my mac to go for swap memory, but it does.
@@janplexy Like I said, your Mac is supposed to maximize your available RAM and it will almost always use some swap memory too - you can't avoid it. It doesn't mean you need more RAM.
Are you related to Optimum Tech? Your videos and picture is kinda similar to him. 😅
Can't you just put it upside down? That would also put the WiFi antenna at the top, which might even improve reception.
Subbed! I'm interested to know more about the external hard drive mentioned at 7:25
8:02 for power button you can still do network wakeup using smart phone xD
Thank you for the great video. I would love to see a video of you using the base model with 256 GB of storage with an external drive. I’m curious to what the performance head would be and is a process truly that complicated I want a base modeland I already have external storage please please please do a video
Can I use lg 49 inch monitor for trading on M4 Mac mini ?
The mouse has usba ports but m4 does not have port?
recently was still running my late 2012 Mac Mini with 16/512 (upgraded to an SSD).
Why would you ever turn your Mac off? Unless you need to hard reset or something which you normally should never need.
Some people prefer to shut down their Mac at night rather than let it sleep.
@@CreatedTech no people do. maybe ex PC users.
Any thoughts on Mx master 3s for Mac vs regular for use with Mac mini?
I’ve used both and haven’t seen a difference over Bluetooth. I do think it’s more sluggish without the unifying receiver so I’d go with regular. Unfortunately I’ve never used a third party mouse that felt like it was made for Apple, but I think that may be more of Apple’s doing than Logitech etc.
@@DevinDillenger Logictech software also sucks major ass in my experience, and it's worse on the Mac. So there is that aspect to consider.
Someone prove me wrong but I am sure that monitor in 5K is not available in the UK. I have not been able to find it anywhere.?
I'm having the same problem with the new Asus ProArt 5K that came out last month. I've only seen it being sold in the US so far for $799. We all know they'll just do a find and replace on the $ for £. BenQ have something on the way too, but I can't seem to find pricing or release dates at all. Both use the same panel apprently so it'll end up personal preference or whoever manages to get the better pricing. Asus also have a reputation for pretty mediocre build qualitry on their monitors these days. I'm hoping BenQ can better them there lol.
@@TalesOfWar The BenQ 5K has been out of stock for weeks. LG and Dell do a 40 inch widescreen 5K but prices similar to Apple 5K.

I completely agree with you. I purchased the base M4 mini because I knew it would be perfect for my use case, and I was right (I've had it for 3 weeks). I already had all the necessary peripherals, including a 2TB external NVME drive.
What do you normally use it for? Would it be a great option for a developer?
@@obedboakyedanquah9114 I'm not a developer so I can't give an informed answer. I do MS office work (mostly spreadsheets), movie creation with iMovie using videos from my iPhone, photo editing, etc., no real heavy duty stuff.
I bought the base model. I run android studio and xcode. Working fine without any issues. But remember, android emulator will take more RAM, so better to test using mobile phone. For development purpose base model is enough for me.

Amazing thoughts on it!
*You CANNOT future proof* a device from a company that build in obsolescence into their product line.
For my use case, I opted for the 14 core CPU / 20 core GPU M4 Pro. I left all of the other boxes unchecked. I have a 4TB TB4 external SSD that I swap between my Mac Mini and M4 iPad Pro.
I definitely want a video on the Thunderbolt SSD options. Also this is compatible to all Silicon Macs, right!
Yep, all Apple Silicon
(Pro or no, RAM, SSD) This is the configuration that I have been mulling: $1,799.00 512GB SSD storage Apple M4 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 48GB unified memory
512GB SSD storage
2) What would the practical difference be when using Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and 40 web browser tabs open simultaneously if I just got the base M4 mac mini rather than the M4 Pro mac mini?
4. 1TB is slightly faster but no real advantage other than being able to store more data on the internal SSD
5. No
Decide your budget and buy accordingly. It really doesn't have to be more complicated than that. Those sandisk drives are fine
why, why, why keep tell people what the won't need. If you are going to get a non upgradable mini, max the memory. 16GB is to little to late apple, great the finally got rid of 8GB but like that was too little. If 16GB was so great why have larger options. And remember the GPU is shared memory.
Duuuhhhh NO 256 gigs is never enough 😂
Hi if I am going to stream on it occasionally should I get the m4pro
People forget that the power button is also the reset button. That’s just bad design.
who are "people"?
Seems like having vertical and horizontal on different fingers might not be intuitive for moving around a workspace going diagonally etc. seems like it would take some getting used to. Cheers.
It doesn't have the second scroll wheel like the MX Master, but the top wheel can be programmed to scroll side to side by pushing on the left or right side of the wheel.

PS and LR are just simple raster editing, not a "creative workflow" and AE is simply inefficient badly designed software that is painful to use. Sorry, could not help myself, feeling much better now 😊
I HAVE AN M1 MAC MINI 16GB.
WITH ONLY ONE APP OPEN, SAFARI AND 2 BROWSER WINDOWS OPEN WITHIN THAT, 11GB OF THE MEMORY IS EATEN UP
SO YOUR RAM TEST HERE IS NOT ACCURATE
macOS is designed to try and use all available RAM at all times. So yes, what you're seeing is normal and my RAM test is very accurate.
@@CreatedTech Actually my Brother who is an apple technical support Tech says that it isnt Normal. But OK. I went into the apple store and tinkered with an m4 Mac mini with 16gb and the same thing! Give me a break. LOL😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@MatthiasHamilton Yeah your brother has zero clue what he's talking about lmao and probably needs more training. I worked for Apple for 5 years (maybe I even trained your brother), have experimented with about 30 different Mac configurations over the last few years, and I'm telling you for a fact that I am correct. Use some common sense - if it took 11GB to have two apps open, you'd need 50GB+ of RAM just to use the Mac normally. You can look at the "Memory Pressure" graph in the bottom left corner of Activity Monitor to give you a better idea. If it's low/green, there's no issues. But I'm sure you and your brother know better though 😂
Who cares where the power button is? What percentage of users have their M4MM in a super “tight” location? And, who actually turns off their desktops these days? All the fuss about this design is stupid
A so-called Pro machine where you only get 256 pr 612 GB of storage and having to do all kinds of complicated things to, maybe, be able to use an external drive, is laughable
How is a $599 ($499 with student discount) entry-level desktop machine considered a "Pro machine"???
@ Isn’t it called a M4 Pro?
@@mikaelbiilmann6826 There is an M4 version, and an M4 Pro version. Research what each one does and who they are marketed for
@@mikaelbiilmann6826 No. It's called the Mac Mini, and the version with the M4 Pro starts at 512GB and 24Gb of RAM. If you want an actual pro machine, look at the Mac Studio, though that's still on the M2 chips right now. It's expected to get an update to M4 in Spring next year, or potentially M5 if it's a little later in the year when WWDC happens (which is usually around June).
@@mikaelbiilmann6826 its not. And they have been on sale for $499 everywhere in the USA for the last 2 weeks, no need to be a student. most sales end Dec 2... if there is any stock left.

Your advice is great, for NOW. But most people buy a system like this and work with it for 5 to 6 years. I'm not getting 32GB of RAM because I need it today, I will need it 4 years from now. Software apps will increasingly require more and more RAM. Why bottleneck yourself from the start?
Because the money difference you spend today to upgrade could be spent towards a better Mac Mini in 3 years from now, when you actually need more RAM.
@@PandaMoniumHUN That's not how most people work. I don't want to trade my 3-year old system in at a huge loss, or sell it to someone online, only to then have to spend half a day transferring everything to a new machine that I'll replace again in 3 years.
I'll buy one great system once every 5 to 6 years. The price is more than worth it.
You definitely won’t need 32GB of RAM minimum in 4 years. It’s been 16GB minimum for years and will continue to be for a while. You’re literally just wasting your money and giving it to Apple. I made a whole video on this topic.
PCs suffer from cray cray depreciation --- apples do not. resale value is stellar. IF you were to get a base mac M4 today @500 (on sale everywhere for this) in 3 years, when the M6 comes out at @ $500 again... your M4 will still be worth $300. Sell it, drop down $200 = new M6. Do it again 2-3 years later. Go into your bank app and have it pull $5 from your account every Friday and transfer to savings tasked only for a new mac purchase. 2 years from now = $500. =). we had a 16/256 M1 mini, just sold it for $380. Paid $630 as a refurb 2 years ago. Dropped $100 on a new M4... done.
