The Maserati might be a game changer for me. I love the design, and it seems like a super cool EV for a petrolhead
I was a massive petrolhead. Last car had an AMG V8 in it 😉 The Taycan is a proper drivers car, it's great fun. Yes still a bit heavy, but unless you're on a track you are very unlikely to feel it. It's just such a good car to drive. As soon as I drove one: I was totally convinced.
Love V8s, my dream car would have a V8, love tinkering with engines too, ice has a lot more going for it than evs for me
@@Markcain268 a V8 is a Great thing. But having driven many fun and high performance cars - the Taycan is a fantastic, engaging and fun car and fits into my current life a lot better than the V8 did, despite the car shape being practical. Even on a track the Taycan is fun to drive, albeit no Lotus Elise 😉
@@kempez not driven any really high performance cars, even the V8 I drove was just a 155 hp rover sd1, body work was a mess but boy did it make a nice noise, and also drove very well, I would really like a rover p6 3500s with a tuned engine and the 5 speed box out the sd1
@@Markcain268 if I could pick a car for the engine it would be a Lexus LFA. More realistically, my 2019 C63 was an amazing engine. I also like the sound of the Mustang Coyote engine. Neither have amazing chassis though, IMO. I still hanker after an S1 Elise. I’ll have one, maybe when the kids are gone 😂
Had many V8 cars. Will use the time to have more until they will be history. Any V8 engine is an engine that evokes emotions for the driver and passengers. They will be history, if you are a real petrolhead you will miss the V8, especially naturaly aspirated, like you miss your wild youth 🤣😂
That Maserati. 😍
A few years ago, I realised I needed to change from being a “petrolhead”, to being a “motoring enthusiast”. This way, no matter what the future brings, cars will always have something about them that make me smile, beyond a noisy engine and a nice gear shifter. I had a new appreciation for quirky features, characterful design and driving characteristics. I encourage all of you to do so to, because it’s our choice wether to continue to be sad about the gradual shift away from ICE, or evolve our passion as the car world changes around us. It’s difficult, i know, but it can be done.
Reality check, EVs are not better than ICE, why do we need to shift to them? 😂😂😂
bro on the super copium
@@dickriggles942 There’s no one better than the other, it varies from usage case to usage case. If we’re talking about a small city car, EV is perfect cause they don’t go very far and it’ll help in some way to clean up the local air. But if we’re talking a truck hauling goods across a country, then that’s where electric is impractical right now. Synthetic fuels would be the way to go at that point
@@magnustan841 As usual, it will clean up the local air, MAYBE, but drive pollution to rural or poor areas. LOL. Also, I want to see how many people will want an EV that is great for going around town, MAYBE, but can't leave the city, LOL. I saw a UA-camr already complain about this, in Russia, nonetheless, but come on, you rent a car, it should take you anywhere you need to go.
It seems like I find more negatives about EVs than positives and that's nuts.
I've started looking at cars as just a travel appliance, that way I don't care what powers it or what it looks like as long as it's fit for purpose, the good thing about an ev is I can just drive it then forget all about it until it's needed again, that's me prepared for the future lol
I just enjoy simple cruising so EVs are fine in my book. Problem is they're still really pricey. My car brand new was about $9,100. The cheapest EV I can get here is $33,000, and that's with 0 road tax and 0 import duties from the government.
Even for non-petrolheads just wanting to go from A to B, EVs are just not really an option when they're priced out of most people's budgets. Anyone wanting to sell EVs (or any alternate-fuel car) needs to make it easily attainable for the masses. As it is now, we don't have the modern equivalent of a Model T or Beetle just yet.
I may be old and a petrolhead but fortunately I don't need sound to have fun. I think the up and coming MG4 GT will be a fun hot hatch, that will also be affordable.
What about the price?
What about the sound?
What about the feeling bro 🥺
Good video Rory. Not an easy subject, but there is no 'advancement' without conversation.
*Hit 213k today. Thank you for all the knowledge and nugget you have thrown my way since last year. The hedge fund you talked then was the game chaNgeR for me. Since I started working with them everything just aligned for good*
This is what I have been saying earlier that institutions like hedge fund are the best to work with because they are well informed and have access to massive funds and data to take advantage off retailers

I think this will definitely be a game changer in the industry as AI is being already adopted by these big company for fast executions.
Imagine executions within nano seconds of news impacts. This is insane
As petrol head - I pass all of them, including Taycan. Thanks.
Rory reminds of James May, he’s more open-minded than most automotive journalists
Switching to an EV is not necessarily difficult or scary but it definitely is expensive if you want like for like (not in terms of performance, but in terms of range).
Wanting range isn't really a sensible way to look at it for the vast majority of drivers.
Example being myself. I drive an e208(200 miles tops in summer realistically).
In the 4 years I owned my last car, a Renault Clio, I didn't drive once a distance that would have used all my current cars charge.
With my current car, I have driven once a distance that used my range(~300 miles each way). I charged twice for about 15 min each way, so 4 stops total. It was perfectly fine, I welcomed each stop as well so I could get out, pee, eat, etc. Since then, the range has once again had 0 impact as I just charge once per week and sit about 40-80% charge most of the time and that is on my relatively lower range EV.
@@dronesayeview most rational person I've seen all day ( not sarcasm )
@@dronesayeview Okay, in my old Toyota Yaris diesel I drove all the way from Denmark to South coast Spain, 3.000 + km each way. How would you do it in an EV? I mean, how would you even do it? You basically would have to buy a Tesla to be sure to find charging points, and they cost 400.000 Danish Kroner and going up here in Denmark as base price (40k Pound Sterling). Do you see the problem? Another thing is, you can not argue with the fact, that EV's are hugely overpriced. Again, here in Denmark we are extremely hard hit with car taxes, of which EV's are actually to some part exempt, and still the cheapest EV cost more than three times more than the cheapest ICE car for sale! You can buy a lot of diesel or gasoline for that price gab, electricity is not cheap either and neither is it green by any measure, when the fact is, that 90% of all electricity still is produced by burning so-called fossil fuels. EV's in my book are all about green wash or virtue signaling. I love the technology, but hate all hypocrisy!
@@Mike-1000 they were, I just opened the app and found another one. It happens.
@@Mike-1000 that's true but it is also happening. More and more chargers are being introduced and maintenence issues are getting companies into trouble so that should hopefully improve too.
Second time watching this - loving your reviews and features Rory 😉
Great video, some other EV's that are realy fun are the lucid air, the nio et5 and the mg 4.
Nice try Rory but I will stick to engines my friend! Nice video btw!
Absolutely enjoyable and enlightening narration.
Great review Rary
I'm down in South Africa, for sure this episode is interesting
Wow great video. So I sold my Mk3 Focus RS and Giulia QV and got a BMW i4 M Sport and wife has ordered the Cupra Born 77kw with the wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4 EV tyres. So we agree with you that there are some good sports EVs out there.
moved (but not upgraded) from 2017 Focus RS to 2022 Rivian R1T last year. it is definitely not apple to apple - more like organic strawberry to GMO watermelon🤷🏻♂️ R1T is blisteringly quick and can hold somewhat tight on corners - but still missing the stick, the exhaust notes and the swiftness (due to smaller size) of RS. if RS is pony - R1T is rhino.
Great video
*I was intrigued by this but without a soul and noise like Alan sugar says your fired* 😂
This is all fine and good, but I just hope Synthetic Fuels give me the option to still have ICE fun cars ❤️ Leave EVs for daily cars or something, an "EV only future" isn't enough!
A gear stick would be my "petrolheady" requirement!
...when cars were cars.
The video we all needed
Can someone help me please? I have a question which is bothering me and giving me restless nights.. What was the problem with only one pair of headlight on a car why carmakers (Citroean, Hayunday, Gennassis, BM2xU and whoever else it may concern) had to basically jump on the double stack McHeadlights band wagon.. Aware Rory probably means 4WD with a drift mode but still.
I was expecting to see Mini Cooper SE and Kia EV6 GT in the list. They deserve to be in this list more than Mazda MX-30 and Cupra Born in my opinion.
Rory, excellent. Abarth regardless of fake 'grunt', is a real fun thing. Bodes well. Speaking of Alex? Where is he? Good video. Thank You.
I'm working on an old petrol car at the moment, it's 7.12am here and I can't wait until 9am so I can tinker with it, great fun!

It’s all relative. For example, for me every ICE car feels boring and disengaging compared to a dirt cheap sportsbike. So why not get your petrol fun from a cheap, 3.0s 0-60, manual, 45 mpg bike rather than having a car? Does having 4 wheels make you less of an enthusiast? Same applies to EV enthusiasts.
New i4 M50 owner here and I'm very happy with it. 🙂🙌🏽
Retrofits are awesome ⚡️⚡️ mostly for the challenge it is to convert an ICE to electric
That’s like saying “The best steak restaurants for Vegans”
What about AE86 BEV Concept?
The EV version of legendary Initial D tofu delivery car Toyota came up with recently.
I've got an '86 Fiero project car that I'm working on restoring. I'll either be dropping a Series III 3800 (NA, at first, turbo later) OR doing an EV power plant. I really like the idea of a Fiero with something like a pair of Chevy Bolt motors in it . . . that'd be insane. Or, at the very least, even one would be a good time. :-) A Mach-E motor in the back would be even better, if I go single motor. Once I get to that point, we'll have to see how much I can get the EV parts for.
Until the battery technology is improved and charging is the same as putting gas in the car, maybe. But the intoxicating V8 I am driving now is too attractive for me to give it up. I can work on it on the weekend and buy parts relatively easily compared to all the electric cars. I can also add more power to the vehicle without getting shafted by the manufacturer. Nobody can control what I add to my gas car.
whats happened to the promised Renault 5 electric? zoe platform and for under £20??
I don't know why this looks like a way to promote some cars. It just felt a bit off

That maseratti profile gives me miura vibes
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the Mustang Mach-E in your review. I’ve heard it can be quite fun to drive.
On my side I have to admit that driving an electric car once in a while is really impressive to see how much torque they have and how much fun they can be to drive. Just not convinced yet about the charging offer for long trips.
It wasn’t mentioned because it isn’t a Mustang. It’s an SUV. No car guy in their right mind wants an SUV (unless it’s the Jeep Wrangler or the Ford Bronco), let alone one that is trying to be a cheap ass imitation of one of the greatest muscle cars ever to exist
My brother has a client who owns a Mustang Mach-E and he hates it.

If Government is so keen on electric vehicles, they should half the tax and make them cheaper than petrol cars.
In most cases they are cheaper. But nearly every model on the market is tailored for rich people.
@@manup1931 That's nonsense. The cheapest EV here in Denmark cost more than three times the cheapest ICE car, and we have some of the highest new car taxes in the world, of which EV's on top is even partly exempt of!
@@manup1931 incorrect
@@1corinthians15.1-4kjv because every ev is fully loaded with features because the are subsidized by states.
Enough taxpayers money has been thrown at these things. Just the fact they need to do this shows the lack of public support for the policy.
As long as EV's embrace their difference and don't try to resemble a petrol car with fake sounds and stuff I think the future of motoring is bright!
Someone should stick a V8 into a Tesla! I'd drive that :)
Kia EV6 GT. Rapid fast, nearly 100hp more than Genesis GV60. Has drift mode and arguably quicker than a M3P or equivalent in that price range. 🤷🏻♂️
Amazing thumbnail
When an EV can go whoosh pop and bang then I'll show an Interest. Good effort through Rory.
Rory could sell broken refrigerators to Eskimos!
Some nice ones there. But still waiting for an electric convertible.
What about the Kia EV6 GT?
Yeah, he missed on this one. Better performance than the GV 60. Some UA-camr in Korea got 0-60 in 2.99 seconds in the EV6 GT.
Tesla Model 3 Performance stock is a super package for the money. Skip the FSD nonsense and spend that on suspension and brake upgrades and it’s exceptionally good for way less than 100k.
Great video - just have to accept the future Rory it's here!
Why??
@@malph9216 Because it's the future.
@@thewatcher5822 We'll have to agree to disagree on that one I'm afraid.
He has no choice
I've accepted it, don't like it one bit but I've accepted my future is walking or bus and I've realised there is no point saving up for my dream car any more and I'll have to find something else to interest me in my retirement, yes, dull as the future may be, I've come to terms with it
i just want body style like AMG GT 2 doors but electric and budged friendly. Would buy in an instant.
And the exhaust sound?
Not a bad list here. I really do think it's about time that Jaguar updates the I-pace. Long overdue.
Didn’t know about the Lexus !
We need some type of natural rumbling v8, 10, 6 noise. Not a generated humming like a beehive noise. Almost like sitting in front of my pc playing a video game.
Didn’t mention the price of the Maserati, it’s beautiful, but even well healed petrol heads aren’t going to get one 200k puts it beyond 99% of people!
The Taycann turbo is going to be knocking on 160k

Until I have no option, real engine sounds and gears. 👍
I don't see why gears aren't still helpful to economy in an ev. I understand that this super high revving and constant torque so you don't "need" gears but tbh, I'd prefer a lower powered motor and a gear box to keep the involvement and probably increase range too if there's an overdrive for motorway cruising....
EV torque simply makes gears irrelevant.
With electric cars having no gears and no engine sound, you lose that feeling of changing up the gears as they hit the red line and even more so dropping down the gears listening to the revs. EV's just can't replace that and petrolheads can't get around that
I am still a 'petrol-head'. However, have you looked at the new technology that is on it's way? Have you looked & done some research of the Sodium-Ion batteries? They make far more sense in my eyes! How long before we run out of Lithium? Wishing you & the crew all the best....
i wonder if a V8 petrol Ford Mustang converted into an electric car by Electrogenic would be better than the factory electric ford mustang 🤔
Still not convinced. We need Exhaust Sound and Gears!
The vote on the final approval of the EV law has been delayed due to countries disagreeing with EV only cars and ignoring the synthetic fuel alternatives in ICE vehicles. This law may never come into effect or it may be altered to include ICE cars able to use synthetic fuels. So hold your horses on EVs, there is still hope for us petrol heads.
Unless countries go full authoritarian and start forcefully seizing ICE cars, they will never be taken off the roads.
I can only imagine the outrage if a government went to take ICE vehicles from poor families who simply cannot afford electric cars. Even in 2050, 2060, you will still have this disparity in EV availability across the classes of society.
@@sabersz there should always be another option, we can’t be simply forced to go all electric. Pretty authoritarian approach to the matter.
@@AngelSapundzhiev I'm with you but surely this is done and dusted. Legislation, manufacturers having changed car production facilities. Eventually your standard petrol or diesel car is going to rot through corrosion. Time will do the governments work for them
@@robsmall6466 let’s see what happens. There is a big fight behind the scenes between lobbyists on both sides and I believe there will be some type of compromise. Some manufacturer’s like Audi have already made the decision to go all electric by 2033, but others are still in limbo and it could go either way. Adapting ICE vehicles for synthetic fuels should not be such a big deal in the current scheme of things. We have have the choice of both, as it should be and I believe most manufacturers will be in line with that.
@@AngelSapundzhiev I hope you are correct. I believe that electric, petrol, diesel, hybrid, hydrogen and anything else should coexist. Then the customer should be able to purchase what is right for them
Mgz4 and some solar panels, and keep your fav car on the road with the money you save
Jenesen interceptor is my fave car, simply love that v8 engine, without it, it's nothing in my opinion of course
No ev, ice rules, and Germany agree
I'm sorry I couldn't even finish the video. Stopped at 2 :43,not because of Rori but I love sound together with looks. Electric cats no thanks
No Lucid Air?
The Mazda MX-30 was a really disappointing car to test drive - the one thing you didn’t mention in this is the rear visibility is abysmal thanks to the suicide door setup they have going on. The rear passenger window is about the size of my head and the B pillar about the width of my torso!! I know it’s been designed to not have the biggest range going but that also was pretty disappointing. However, different strokes for different folks!
All well and good, but I wouldn't consider an EV until the infrastructure is upgraded. I have a friend with a Taycan who nearly froze to death in the recent blizzard because he couldn't locate a WORKING charging station.
Petrol Heads.....can easily make any car driven by any power source, fun to drive like an old ICE sports car. But. Thats totally missing the point. And such a tiny miniscule modern day car market segment (Petrol Head, Piston Head, Hoon...).
The WHOLE idea Rory of a full electric vehicle, is effiency, and affordability, and saving money.
But Rory go right ahead and spend the value of a unit/town house (*in Australia.) on your new Volvo Polstar.....and drive like a hoon and drift in it....well because you can.
Edit: Scrolling down the comments
@TechPassion
I rest my case Rory.
Hey Rory I’ll let you slide on this one because I know the people at the top forced you to make this video but as a petrol head I want….
Engine Sounds not just performance
The only one I want is a hybird v8 so I can hear my v8 kick on and save gas for burnouts later.
Mazarati my favourite lol
I'd prefer a Fererri.
I like EVs and would love to have a polestar or a taycan but it could never be my only car. I would need a loud petrol big engine fun car
Shopping list? Bro i can’t even afford a kia picanto 🥲
So now Lexus is interested in a manual gearbox, all of a Sunday
The zoom in zoom out every 3 seconds makes me confused 😳
What happens if there is wee damage to Undercarriage to these EV's------ £10 grand to £50 depending on the brand. Potholes -1 EV's 0.
Most EVs have rally spec plates over that battery pack. If you manage to damage it enough that you need to swap it you have bigger problems.
Hate to break it to you, you'll do 10× more damage scraping the underside of an ICE car than an EV. EV undercarriages are basically indestructible
Honda e is a car that had me smiling the whole time while driving it. It's small, nippy, rwd and has 50:50 weight distribution. A very fun car to drive imo.
Petrol heads? You mean sane people.
I am not the stig to drift I want noise, I wanna feel and hear my turbo spool, I wanna hear vtec and scream to 9k on my 4cyl
Only 9k? EVs scream to double that.
Not scary or difficult. EVs just don't offer the same visceral and emotional experience as an ICE car. Apart from the usually insane acceleration it's a much more cerebral experience. Show me an EV that can evoke the same emotional response as the sound of the CGT or an Audi RS3 5-cyl under load, and I'm on. Until then, nope.
You won't have a choice lol. Petrol heads are gonna be obsolete soon.
for me EVs is a way to afford petrol head stuff.
i got a model 3 performance in 2020.
no way i could afford the price, taxes and running costs of an ICE that goes from 0-100 in 3.4 sec
I hope Subaru is taking notes.
EVs can never replace IC cars.
They are replacing ICE cars. EV sales are growing, ICE sales are falling.
@The Watcher No, they are not replacing ICE cars.
@@thewatcher5822 that's due to government making ice expensive to drive, if evs cost the same to drive as ice then they would hardly sell any
I’m holding out for some decent EV Estates/Wagons 🤞
MG5?
You left out Hyundai's rolling lab department!
A few good options here. But you can't include crossover SUV's or cars, with SUV styling in a list for petreolheads. I'am sorry, but the Mazda MX-30 would only be an option, if it is an Mazda 3. And why does the Polestar need that SUV plastic styling on the wheel arches? Same goes for the Genesis.
Real Petrolheads hates SUV's or crossovers.
If i had the budget, i would go for the Porsche Taycan Sport Tourismo (They actualy listen to me, and made something cool out of the Cross Tourismo by removing that wannabe SUV BS) 😉
The "weeeeeeeeeeee" of an electric motor will never replace the burble, growl and the bark of a decent ICE. Might handle and accelerate as good or better but a big chunk of the sensation is missing and no amount of piped audio can make up for that.
a fined tuned JBL™ speaker📻🔊 will make you feel better, you just need to stop the whining to rear it🎶🎵.
Just let us choose don't force us

The new VW ID2 is going to be cheap if you have 23 grand to play with
I'm waiting for Plaid review on this channel, other cars are simply toys in comparison at that price. It uses same amount of electricity as the Skoda Enyaq yet has 1000 istant hp @200mph down to 25% battery with best cooling system design in the industry. And now has better brakes as standard but most importantly, track package is here with carbon ceramics so 350kmh is top speed.
Its funny how much behind for example Taycan is, 2 speed gearbox in an ev with more weight and complexity while Tesla developed a completely new motor with carbon wrapping so torque curve is basically flat - to put things into perspective Rimac Nevera with 4 motors from the Plaid and slightly different gearing would be lighter and quicker with possible top speed of 300mph.
An impressive car for sure. And it proves my point: it's selling point is data and tech specs, not the experience of driving it.
