I saw them do this song in, I think, 1965 in Chicago when they were opening for the Rolling Stones. Patti would have been 17. This was one of the experiences that made me fall in love with R&B music.
I sat 3 feet away from them at a nightclub (Club Venus) in Baltimore in 1968. It was just Patti, Nonah, and Sarah as Cindy had left a few months before to replace Flo in The Supremes. When they started to sing this song, I was riveted to my seat and was transported to another world. I think that, if there had been an earthquake that destroyed the building, I still would have been unable to move.....it was THAT MESMERIZING.The power in Patti's voice remains unchallenged to this day!
As a person who has studied voice and continues to do so, I believe a lot people don't know how off the charts their voice technique was and how operatic the voices are naturally. If they sang classically and pop they would have owned the game. Patti Labelle is one of the greatest voices of the last century and who knows how far she could have conquered if she was born a little later.
If she was born later she would have never had the training recieved from bluebells And labelle. She would sound totally different. Probably wouldn't have a career that lasted this long either

That voice at 21 years old. It's amazing how much it sounds the same today. I just watched a performance from this year. Her voice has aged of course but so well preserved after 50 years.
I remember many years ago when I was coming out of a very very very very very very dark place in life. A kind kind kind friend took me to go see LaBelle at the old Gibson Amphitheatre. It was a part of my healing. Especially when Patty laid on the floor and began to sing. We were way up in the nosebleed seats. She put down the kicked off her shoes and laid on the floor and sang that song.
Patti is the only singer to never loose her voice not a note or an octive Ms labelle sounds just as good then as she does now. the best girl group ever
Patti is easily greater than Aretha & Whitney but never got the props. Don't know why everybody compares her to Diana Ross they have different styles. Patti is big voiced with a touch of Gospel soul more akin to Aretha than Diana. She always been unique. Patti left this group for solo stardom. Groups never last.
She sure is. That top soprano note is so crystal clear and well controlled and she has such composure while doing it. Very impressive. And, of course, Cindy's second soprano and Nona's solid alto are right there in the mix to round out that harmony to a T and back Patti's dynamic vocals with their unique Bluebells's sound.
Wow! That gave me life. Patti Labelle gave me chills! Through the highs lows, she owns this song. I watch this video frequently just to remember what real singing and class looks like. This is undoubtedly one of the best live performances of all time! Come on thru Patti and the Bluebelles, come on thru!
Superb harmonies of the Bluebells. They are never given their due. You can't be taught this kind of singing, you are born with it. You just have to mature and nurture it.❤
This is my favorite Patti & The Bluebelles tune. Loved how she belted the high note at the end! But let me say this: the background singers are great too! If you listen to the end as Patti hits the high note, there is someone in the background hitting a high note just below hers! Bravo!
This performance gave me so much life I got chills, especially when they hit that soprano note!!! Did anybody else think that they sounded better on their live performance than they did on their album (especially Patti Labelle)?
+Al Rector With few exceptions, "Down The Aisle" was one, I never felt that an electronic sound system could contain Pat's voice on a recording. On recordings. Pat's voice always felt confined.........as though it was bouncing back against the walls instead of going out into space.
