Exactly!!! Dionne, Aretha. Cissy and Whitney Houston. Diana Ross smoked "More" cigarettes back in the '80s and stopped. She also smoked a little in the '60s (Supremes). This is why she still has her voice.
24 year old Ms. Patti Labelle, 24 year old Ms. Nona Hendrix, & 23 year old Ms. Sarah Dash are beautiful and amazing, then & still😉👌🏿 #Legendary #Trailblazers #Trendsetters #Classy
Her voice has gotten higher and stronger over the years I didn’t even know that it was Patti singing it sounds like a whole different person that shows that if you keep singing your voice will get stronger and that’s exactly what happened to her
Wow seeing her hair like this speaks to her originality as a star and as a performance artist. Kudos to Patti! well before her time. Hands down! she did it before Fantasia and all of them did it in the 21 st century. This was a revelation!
I've seen this dozens of time and each time I have give Patti LaBelle a perfect 10 standing ovation! She's a vocalist's dream in this: perfect pitch, inflection, intonation, timber, vibrato, range, breathe control and sheer "forget the band, my VOICE WILL be the last thing your hear in this song." Stage presence for days. Patti personifizes the song. Nona and Sarah sing well enough to not even miss Cindy Birdsong. And as plastic and corny as a 50's throw-back song about rainbows and Kansas could have come off as preformed in front off an all black audience on a local New York City PBS show (Soul!) whose subject matter at the time was late '60s prison riots and black revolution, Patti and Bluebelle's wow-factor was still undeniable. Go girls!
I went to a jazz festival in Cincy, several yrs ago and Patti was supposed to perform for 20 minutes and she got the crowd so riled up and she was so into it that she performed for over an hr, so they had to bring a limo onto the field at riverfront stadium and they escorted her off the staged but inside the limbo, Patti hit a note that rocked the stadium without a mike on, and as the limo drove her away and out the stadium thousands of fans started running towards the limo shouting Patti Patti, the remaining fans didn't even want to hear the other two artist that was supposed to perform and the jazz festival was over without allowing the other two to perform
I hear no difference in her voice with or without the nose job it sounds the same to me. Her voice just got much stronger the more she sang. Nevertheless, Pattie is simply amazing!!
Highly recommended is the LP of Motown songs they did with the Bronx genius Laura Nyro, 'Gonna Take a Miracle' (1971). The title track is a mind blower. The LP is also important for its implicit statements on race relations, feminism and sexual freedom. There is an excellent essay on this LP by 'someone Neal' if I remember correctly which addresses these issues. Nyro was god-mother to Patti's first born.
I think that her voice got stronger and stronger with each new adventure she had to do; in other words. Pattie has said that she never wanted to go solo, but after she lost her mother, and two of her sisters and Labelle broke up..Pattie would round on the floor and lose her mind and that voice got stronger and stronger, she sang like she wanted to from the heart.
wow......one of my favorite girl group back in the day. Still have all of there records and especially the early ones listening to Patti's electricfying voice sends chill. Thanks for the memories while growing up.
She sounds grand here, I've just been watching videos of her singing in the 80s/90s and her voice is more powerful and stronger. How is that possible? Usually with age peoples voices falter.
That's what's supposed to happen to great singers. Operatic singers definitely endure a spring later on. Sadly, at lot of CCM singers seem to peak after their 20s. Patti was about 24 here.
This is from PBS series 'Soul' from NYC! Nice to see a "clear" version. This was late Patti & the Blue Belles. Revolution was in the air! When Labelle return a few years later, they ditched the 3-girl-3-gown-three-wig routine and were singing hard rock-in-roll from "Over the Rainbow" to "Morning Much Better," & "When the Sun Comes Shining Through." If I recall, Mohammad Ali appeared was on the same episode, explaining his conversion to Islam and why he dodged the Vietnam draft. Classic!
This just goes to show how much her voice evolved, this sounds nothing like her today or even back then in the 70s and 80s. But she still sounded phenomenal.
Patti and the girls used to "steal the show" at the Uptown Rock n Roll shows back in the mid 60s and they didn't have a record on the charts singing standards like Over the Rainbow, Oh Danny Boy, etc! You go my home girls!
Awsome sanging!! Patti Labelle and Ms. Nona Hendryx and Ms. Sarah Dash straight up the real deal!! them girls didn't need that hair or pretty dresses... they could really sang!!
OMG PATTIE PATTIE damn you really were beforw your time. I mean like I felt like I was watching something from the Now era lol she worked that I felt every note
It was Labelle, it was The Bluebelles with Cindy Birdsong, she left the group in 1967 to sing with The Supremes. Did Cindy quit or did someone get her to be with The Supremes?
According to Sara Dash and Patti Labelle, Cindy was stolen from the Bluebelles as a result of the dirty work of Diana Ross and Berry Gordy. Diana and Berry knew they needed someone who looked like Florence to replace Florence when she was fired from the Supremes. The Supremes and Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles had shared the stage quite a few times on the touring circuit, so the two groups knew one another as rivals. According to Patti and Sara, they had no idea that Cindy was singing with the Supremes until it was reported in the press that Cindy had subbed for Florence at a Supremes' performance at the Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl. Patti and her lawyers then sued Berry Gordy as Cindy was under contract to Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles. Florence was then rehired temporarily back into the Supremes on a sort of probation until Berry Gordy's lawyers could get Cindy out of her contract with Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles. Patti and Sara expressed their disappointment at Cindy's lack of loyalty to the Bluebelles as they had been singing together for six years by this time. Diana Ross was obviously thrilled that she had put one over on Patti and they had been rivals on the touring circuit for some years.
Cindy quit to join The Supremes after Florence was fired. Actually, she was groomed to be Florence's "stand in" (replacement) before they fired Florence because she bore a striking resemblance to Flo and was stacked like Flo and could fit into her gowns.
Charles Marcus I believe that when the Supremes started having problems with Florence Ballard's drinking, Motown considered Cindy Birdsong as a replacement because she could sing and resembled I read that she was secretly attending performances by the Supremes in order to learn the routines
Patti LaBelle & The BlueBelles and LaBelle are ONE AND THE SAME GROUP...with the same members: Patti, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendrix. The ONLY difference between the two was the departure of The FOURTH Original member, Cindy Birdsong, who left to join The Supremes.
It's amazing....these woman would soon become the brass and vocal soaring group known as Labelle! Say goodbye to the matching dresses and hello silver space suits and feathers.
Racism was and still is so much a factor, I remember when they would not allow Patti to Sing this Song on an awards show because of the fear the white public would see how much better she sounded over the original white singer, that did it in the wizard of oz. So naturally , Patti improvised and sung UNDER THE RAINBO AND STILL TURNED IT OUT

Exactly!!! Dionne, Aretha. Cissy and Whitney Houston. Diana Ross smoked "More" cigarettes back in the '80s and stopped. She also smoked a little in the '60s (Supremes). This is why she still has her voice.

"PATTI LABELLE"
(MAY 24. 2020)
I think that her voice got stronger and stronger with each new adventure she had to do; in other words. Her voice was more powerful during the 80s/90s. But, she sounded good here.
She's actually starting to sound more like this as her voice is declining due to age. Still incredible though.
That's what's supposed to happen to great singers. Operatic singers definitely endure a spring later on. Sadly, at lot of CCM singers seem to peak after their 20s. Patti was about 24 here.
She still can blow!!!
Patti style is timeless and Nona and Sarah lord have mercay!!! Them some fine sisters boy!
LORD HAVE MERCY!!!
Awwww. They look so tame here!
This is from PBS series 'Soul' from NYC! Nice to see a "clear" version. This was late Patti & the Blue Belles. Revolution was in the air! patti lebelle is the best music I hear.
This just goes to show how much her voice evolved, this sounds nothing like her today or even back then in the 70s and 80s. But she still sounded phenomenal.
Canelius yeah she jus grew over a 40 year period. That's crazy.
Patti and the girls used to "steal the show" at the Uptown Rock n Roll shows back in the mid 60s and they didn't have a record on the charts singing standards like Over the Rainbow, Oh Danny Boy, etc! You go my home girls!
this was kinda tame for Patti lol but I love it.

Hendryx was the brains behind Labelle's innovative work though

Awsome sanging!! Patti Labelle and Ms. Nona Hendryx and Ms. Sarah Dash straight up the real deal!! them girls didn't need that hair or pretty dresses... they could really sang!!
OMG PATTIE PATTIE damn you really were beforw your time. I mean like I felt like I was watching something from the Now era lol she worked that I felt every note
but nothing has change about her greatness
It was Labelle, it was The Bluebelles with Cindy Birdsong, she left the group in 1967 to sing with The Supremes. Did Cindy quit or did someone get her to be with The Supremes?
Charles Marcus I have heard two different stories they say Diana Ross ask Cindy Birdsong then I also heard it was Berry Gordy also
Berry Gordy was after her because she had a close resemblance to Florence Ballard.
According to Sara Dash and Patti Labelle, Cindy was stolen from the Bluebelles as a result of the dirty work of Diana Ross and Berry Gordy. Diana and Berry knew they needed someone who looked like Florence to replace Florence when she was fired from the Supremes. The Supremes and Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles had shared the stage quite a few times on the touring circuit, so the two groups knew one another as rivals. a song is not enuff for Patti, she needs an opera
damn.
I was in love with this womans soul yaul
Took Dorothy and auntie M to CHURCH!!!
Patti LaBelle & The BlueBelles and LaBelle are ONE AND THE SAME
GROUP...with the same members: Patti, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendrix.

Who like her Jazz Album ?
It's amazing....these woman would soon become the brass and vocal soaring group known as Labelle! Say goodbye to the matching dresses and hello silver space suits and feathers.
nice song... got one for you at our next meeting... its a live performance... you should truly enjoy it.
Aretha may have hit a high note or two but, I don't know who would come out on top if they brought the vocal to the stage in those days.
Awesome!
Racism was and still is so much a factor, I remember when they would not allow Patti to Sing this Song on an awards show because of the fear the white public would see how much better she sounded over the original white singer, that did it in the wizard of oz.
