    This lesson is part of my compete video course for guitar. This transformational course goes beyond everything you have seen about how to learn the guitar. You will learn to understand the entire fretboard at once, allowing you to break out of memorized scale drawings and truly express yourself creatively. You will learn how songs and chord progressions are made, and how to express your own musical ideas over these songs. If you have always dreamed of truly understanding music and being able to improvise with complete freedom on the guitar, this is the course for you!
    You do not need to know anything at all about music theory to begin, and you don't need to be able to read sheet music.
    This course will give you a solid foundation in both harmony and improvisation on the guitar that will serve you for the rest of your life. Here are some of the skills you will learn in Module 1:
    - Improvise freely in all 12 keys across the entire fretboard
    - Master improvising over chord progressions, bringing out the harmony in your solos
    - Master the 2-5-1 chord progression in all 12 keys (the most important progression in all jazz music)
    - Method automatically gives you a deep, personal knowledge and mastery of all seven "modes" of the major scale
    - Learn to create a wide variety of chords and harmonic environments on the guitar
    - Method 100% integrated with your ear, with creative exercises for both guitar and voice
    - Complete creative freedom make music however YOU want to at each level of the method
    - No prior knowledge of music theory or the IFR method is required. Everyone is welcome!
    The complete course is online now and you can get it here:

    This was one of the first videos I watched before learning really anything about how you guys approach harmony and music, and now several months later I'm back here again cause I can't handle all the mental energy I'm still using making all kinds of jumps and slides and changes however I want to, without having got that confidence in movement from the one fret per finger rule you are talking about!

    Clarity of vision. Would love to get it. So would this exercise help in any way in learning standards like Autumn Leaves or Sunny. Also am trying to understand Carol Kaye chord tone, chord scale approach to playing guitar...jazz. Would this exercise help in any way to comprehend or learn to find/see chord tones?...3rd, 5th, 7th, etc? In my attempt to get it am also trying to relate it to the piano.

    What do you mean slide down or up one fret? Why do you have to change positions?

    • @ImproviseForReal
      @ImproviseForReal  5 років тому +1

      You're right that you wouldn't have to change positions if you wanted to open your hand and stretch for some of the notes. But this particular exercise is to change positions so that your hand is always aligned with one finger per fret. By keeping this perfect alignment of one finger per fret always, you can begin to use your hand itself to measure and control the geography of the fretboard. The order that this introduces into your thinking will greatly accelerate two things that are very important: (1) knowing instantly where to find any note that you want to play on the fretboard, and (2) seeing our musical system itself more clearly as well, because the fretboard now serves as a measuring stick that lets you see every musical interval very clearly. We use this technique extensively in the IFR Video Course for Guitar because it's the most effective way I know to accelerate your guitar skills and really master harmony and improvisation on the guitar. You can see the next step of this technique here: improviseforreal.com/ifr-blog/instrument-blogs/guitar-blog/free-video-lesson-ifr-tonal-map
      Thanks for the great question!

    maybe a silly question, where would you use this?

    • @ImproviseForReal
      @ImproviseForReal  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the great question. The answer is everywhere! What you're learning in this video is a way to move freely across the entire fretboard, essentially making it just like a piano keyboard where you can see the entire chromatic scale from left to right. On the guitar, we have freedom of movement in two dimensions so our chromatic scale isn't a simple linear layout like you have on the piano. For this reason, we have to take a few minutes at the start of our journey to learn to see this musical landscape clearly on our instrument. Then we can build everything else that we want to play on top of this concept. I think it will be much more clear when you see the next couple of steps. Improvise For Real the Mobil jumps to each string are two frets, note be on the fifth string to see on the six string is a large jump longer than one fret it seems uncomfortable what am I doing wrong thank you

    • @ImproviseForReal
      @ImproviseForReal  7 років тому

      Hi Bill, if you're already playing the note B on the 5th string, you're right that it would be a huge jump to play the note C on the 6th string. This is because from B to C you are moving UP a half step, but you're trying to make this movement by actually moving DOWN a string from the 5th to the 6th! You can certainly do this but it's not one of the movements I'm teaching in this video. The example that would be relevant to this video would be to play the note B on the 6th string, and then move up to the note C on the 5th string. This would be done with the half step mobility jump exactly as I showed you in the video. I hope this clears it up! Any other questions you have, please feel free to post a comment on my UA-cam channel. Thanks Bill, and happy practicing! - David
