    You made a great point when you said someone might say "I can do in one hour what it takes you 10 hours to do..." To them I would say that may be so, but my ten hour time is spent taking my time, meticulously paying attention to every detail, checking and double-checking so that it is done right the FIRST and only time. Not that your job wouldn't be done right, but I don't do this for a living...that is, I don't do it every day all day long so much that I could do it with my eyes closed like you might, so please take that into consideration when blowing your own horn about how awesome you are, or how slow I am! My proverbial 10 hours is spent taking my time, not rushing or getting in a hurry, and having fun! I don't care if you can do the same thing in one hour..you know, good for you, what do you want, a parade? I'm not made of money so I have to make sure that what I do is done right because I cannot afford to have something break, and have to re-buy (is that a word?) parts just because i got in a hurry and f'd something up. I literally cannot even watch these shows anymore where they say "we have 6 hours to do a complete frame off restoration..." (slight exaggeration, but not by much!) because I know that corners are inevitably going to be cut, and unimaginable and more than likely, unfixable problems are going to surface probably as soon as the project rolls out the door! Anyway..great show! Have a great day and keep up the good work!

    I get this question at every show and cruise. I shouldn't have done this, but I did it for record keeping "if" I ever sell my truck. I kept a detailed log of a every part, big or small, on my build and what it cost. It's scary how fast it adds up. In hindsight, I could skip some of the new parts and work I did, but I wasn't sure of condition at the time with the engine and trans. I didn't get to see either run and drive so I error-ed on the side of caution and rebuilt. My OCD also got the best of me and I spiraled down that wormhole a few times. All in all, I wouldn't change it for the world. Fortunately, these trucks are at least holding their value so I won't get hurt if I sell. It's all in what you want out of it. I was brought up on fuel injection and computers, so that is what I wanted. I know how a carb works, but it is still a bit like sorcery to me. You can most definitely do it on the cheap, or you can spend a fortune. At the end of the day, do what you are comfortable with.

    • @UNITEDBYTRUCKS
      @UNITEDBYTRUCKS  5 років тому

      So very well said! I kept up with the same on Teddy but have honestly yet to tally it up. Ron has the same but we didn't tally it up completely. We decided to work with round numbers that were easier to digest and tack them on to the engine/trans cost as well as tuning. I'm sure it's not the exact answer some want, but it's the best we could do and feel like it gives us garage builders a good frame of reference.

    Price of the harness, PCM, radiator with a union for the steam port from the LS, and then tuning it. That's the swap done.
    Hard parts are bell housing, flywheel, flexplate, brake booster (or delete) options, clutch master etc.
    Then you can figure if you want to run OEM GM VSS sending unit on your trans tailhousing for the PCM to use cruise as well as better for economy. The electric fans or just jerry rigging it to the old clutch fan.
    If you're going 4x4, you better start thinking np205 and $190 to have the VSS reflector ring adapted to your transfer case tailhousing for quick and painless option.
    Speedo fix is driving by mobile until you swap out your gauge or adapt it over from the VSS.
    If you're running an LS1, you have to adapt the crank with a specific flywheel and if you're going manual trans, prepare to grab your knees... It'll sting to get your NV4500 mounted. So many variations on that unit that you had best visit Advanced Adapters to view their tech for using that trans. It'll be worth it for a beast of a 4x4 and that's where I'm headed with my K5.
    If you don't move, you'll lose! Best to just bite down and get it done... Don't camp on it because it's a terrible waste of your time and a part of your life that you'll never get back.
    Bright side, your truck will be worth a whole lot more money if you do it right by the time you finish it and you'll have a sense of accomplishment!

    Last question: So you went with a 5.3 for Pecos. I'm am contemplating a 5.3 vs a 6.0 (looking at a few donor vehicles between 2005-2007 with both engines). I spoke to a fellow at Summit who tells me to go 5.3 because they tend to be less problematic/last longer than the 6.0. (i.e. 6.0 has issues with oil pressure, etc) While I don't have to have a "drag truck", the 6.0 sounds sexy and it will come out of the donor vehicle 400hp-ready which is my HP goal. Hate to ask such a long winded/involved question, but what do u guys think...? (each vehicle has between 100-120k miles on them)

      Can't go wrong with either. Never heard of any oil pressure issues with a 6.0 specifically, though I'm no expert. That said, if I had a choice and your goals, I'd go with the 6.0. We'll be putting a 6.0 in the new project TTR just landed for the UBT audience.

    You can certainly spend any amount of money. I’ve seen crate engine 7 liter ls with twin turbos listed over 25 grand for just the engine assembly. But HP per dollar is on a steep decline after a few thousand. As in stock 350 making 200 hp I buy an $800 6 liter a cam spend 2200 on motor and install make 450 ish hp.. that’s $12 dollars ls per hp. I could spend 30 grand and consistently make 1000. That’s $30 per hp. But that’s 37.50 per hp but it’s $49 per hp from the original 3000 dollar upgrade. Nothing wrong with that if you need 1000 plus, but for most of us the 450 is more than enough and a bargain, past that I can’t justify it in my 85 k5 that I just like to drive back and forth to work and wherever else I go and want it to be dependable, strong, fun to drive and more economical than the carbed 350 that’s in it now. I’m actually looking at a stock 6.0 with a 4l80 and transfer that will run me about 5 by the time it’s all done. Only because I haven’t found a 5.3 with a 4wd 4l80 anywhere and I want the strong trans. And I’m guessing a stock 6l will be cheaper and cheaper on gas and more dependable than a 5.3 tuned and cammed to equal it for low end torque honestly though a stock 5.3 with the 80 would be fine with me and plenty strong for what I need with maybe just a little tuning.

She is getting tired and I am thinking about pulling the original drivetrain and storing it and putting a LS into it. What my question is, what year range or model should I look for in an LS? A buddy told me to only get a 6.0. I would be on a tight budget, so that would be a concern. Is there anything I should stay away from? Anything I should try to get??? Thanks in advance.

    • @UNITEDBYTRUCKS
      @UNITEDBYTRUCKS  5 років тому +1

      Thanks so much for subscribing and for tuning in. There are a ton of factors that come into play when making that kinda decision. That said, I don't think you have to stick with a 6.0 by any means. You could, if budget is a concern, stick with a Gen 3 LS so you don't have to deal with DoD or AFM (essentially you have to replace cam/lifters to get to work with standalone harness). I think they began introducing those in the '08/'09 era. Don't quote me on that. The 99-07 gen 3 motors are what we typically try to use but everything all the way up to the LT series engines can be swapped. All depends on budget.
