Thanks so much for this, I’m based out of Duluth GA and follow southeast squarebodys and c10 club GA. My small block grenaded on me and I’m also doing this swap, a little nervous but I’m for the task, can’t wait for part two!
Man, you can do it! Thanks for following along with C10 Club Georgia. I actually started that club here 2.5 years ago and just stepped down recently. My friend Chaz runs it now. Love that group of guys.
Great build guys a lot of super information. I'm building an 86 Chevy 3+3 with a LQ9 and a 4l80E to a 205 t-case. But I draw the line on 2Trucks crocks he's wearing and I'm from Pecos Texas!!! Lol keep on trucking!!!
Thanks, buddy! That means a lot. We've only been at this for 7 months and I'm simply blown away by the growth we are having. Just keep telling your friends and watching!
Great video I just found a LM7 & 4L60E for under $1,000 yesterday. Complete with pedal, harness and ECU. Pick that up, strip it down and make a 383 stroker with it. Thinking about picking that up for square body project, so this video is perfect.
You guys Rock!!! Love the videos you guys put out, keep up the amazing work ... I’m about to drop the same into my 85 c10. I took the clip off to install mines since I don’t have a buddy like you have that’s willing to get their hands dirty
I put a 5.3 in my 80 GMC last summer, it was very straight forward, no real challenge to the installation at all, looks like it came form the factory that way. 👍🏻
If you have the right parts and a little know-how, it can be done pretty easily. Ron has been going the extra mile so that has made a big difference too.
Whitlock Garage, I’ve done other LS swaps in cars so it wasn’t exactly foreign to me, but trucks are a little different as you well know. My GMC was a very fun project, my next hair brain scheme is a big block C10. 😁👍🏻
Been looking forward to a video like this one. I’ve got an 86 that’s super clean with the 305/700r4 and once i get tired of cruising and want to jam, this will be the plan.
So man I usually put this on for back ground noise while painting vehicles here in the body shop/. I use it for encouragement lol. But just realized who you are man. I was driving the lowered grey lowered suburban coming back with you guys for a little bit from Dino’s. Great video
I just started following you, i have a c20 and watched your video of the holly efi and now i think im going to do an ls swap instead, looks like you are from santa fe just like me happy to see people from new mexico
This is a real good in depth video. I have a 83 GMC square body that my dad left me when he passed in 2017, that i would like to get running and possibly swap the motor. currently in AFG but plan on gettin it running again jus for him. Good work guys.
Awesome video, great build. I would have kept the headers on and installed by removing the front clip, grill and bumper. Slides in nice and easy squeezy after that.
Nice build. 3 questions if you don't mind. 1) Why did we have to cut the block for the headers? Looked like they had clearance on the stand. 2) how do you plan to mount the dbw pedal? 3) did you need any spacers for the converter or direct replacement?
1) the speed engineering headers had limited room between the header and block. To avoid wear, we cut decided to trim that part of the block. pretty common thing; 2) this was a drive by cable install so no need for new pedal or TAC module 3) no spacers needed; Circle D is direct replacement for 4l60e
Great job guys I’m a big fan and congrats Ron on your baby remember that date and it’s pacos birthday that thing is gonna be good for 300,000 miles buddy
A Lead hammer will take that ding out of that rim with a few hits I got same wheels on 53 belair ran some low pro hit a pot hole coming out the dam shop boy I was pissed got home seen the big dent in my wheel got my lead hammer from my wire wheels hit it a few times and back in place nice job love the videos just picked up a 63 c10 🙌🏽🙌🏽🤣
haha yup. It's pretty common in classic trucks, but just keep doing your thing. There's a ton of folks out there who just have to have something negative to say.
I have done the same thing it was a 6.0 ls but I used a electric water pump and a electric fan but I used the shroud that was on the truck. it did help out a lot to be honest to help hide the wires. but also added a trans cooler for it as well because while there as well as to help the life of the trans as well. because I didn't know how abused the trans was added a after market trans filter that sits out side for added insurance. but the truck is amazing it was the rare extended cab square body which most say are ugly but to me more rare because it just looks amazing. but I am stumped why you are using dex3/merc3 in the 4l60e. those run optimal with dex6 a case plus 2 extra carquest aka castol which will be 98$ on sale all the time.
Very cool! Ron is adding a trans cooler as well. For the fluid, we went back with what the trans had in it when it was born (i.e. '02) and I believe that was Dex3. Ron had already scooped all that up so I just poured it in and didn't even pay attention. That said, I'm pretty sure I use Dex3 in my own '03 4L60e.
I added a huge tru cool 40k cooler. When I had the trans built I asked about fluid and I was told to use dex3. Had it in my old built trans, it’s in my current trans and runs just fine. Dex6 is just different viscosity (thinner) than 3 since the newer trans have tighter tolerances.
I think you're an awesome guy special dealing with GM Chevrolet is like the ultimate the best you're awesome dude keep up the good work thank you again for sharing them Chevys
All I run are rc trucks! And my 06 Mercury Grand Marquis, but that's more truck then most trucks anyway lol. Definitely gonna order that hat u got! #trucks
you can get the motor mount bolt out of a small block without taking a fuel pump off all you need is a wrench on tonight in between the pump in the mount
Hey Robbie, I know it's be awhile but can you tell me where TTR got the bolts to mate the trans to the engine? Me and my buddy are getting ready to do this exact thing in my 84 C10. I'm going with the 5.3 and 4L60e so this video is probably the best reference out there for me! Thanks again for the fantastic content on squarebodies.
Sweet! Thanks for sticking with us. Appreciate it. I imagine that the bolts are the factory bolts that came with the trans. That said, I bet there is a Dorman part number out there for purchase on Amazon. I just don't know it offhand.
Question the motor mount bushing ears are supposed to support the motor. If the ears are gone then will that make the mount go bad faster ? I’m wondering if the motor mounts should rest on them like the stock ones?
Potentially, but, honestly, there was no actual way to get the Tejas mounts in with the recommended energy suspension bushings. I'll admit, we had similar concerns but will keep an on it and report back if any failure at any point.
I am buying up parts to LS swap my 85 squarebody. I was looking at buying the Tejas motor mounts too. But I read that you had to use electric fans instead of the clutch fan. I see on your channel that Ron used his clutch fan. Just wondering if there was any issue with using the clutch fan with those motor mounts?
i have a 83 silverado not gonna go LS with it instead i'm going 327 4bbl .202 camel hump heads......might go with a 283 lower rotating assembly in the 327 and a 2spd PG

We like to use the GM ls swap pan or the Holley pan. Truck pan can be used on a squarebody with Tejas Steel Works motor mounts bc it pulls it up and forward so the pan doesn't hang low
Another great video! I found out today from my mechanic that my 84 c10 actually has a 350 and not a 305. He said harmonic balancer is too big for a 305. Other than finding the casting #, how can I visually tell? Some people say 350 oil dipstick is on the passenger side, please let me know, thanks and keep making videos!
@@UNITEDBYTRUCKS thanks, I looked closely at the old motor you pulled out of Pecos and mine looks exactly like that, but someone put 350 valve covers on it. My mechanic adjusted the timing, I trust him he's been doing this for 3 decades just pray Bonita runs fine when I get her home next week. Thanks guys, keep up the good work!
Are you guys running a stock radiator from the c10? I had heard a couple things about over heating and I’m just trying to make sure that I don’t need a different radiator for my LS.
If its a quest of power for the same cost as an LS swap cost of refreshing the LS and the cost of the new trans you could have built a supercharged 383 stroker up to about 6-700hp
@@UNITEDBYTRUCKS the added up numbers in the description the cost of a new trans and the cost of the LS in my area to find a running 5.3 and all wiring and computer alone will set ya back 1200 bucks and the added up numbers in the description was around 3k and i don't know what that trans cost you, I'm guessing a good 5k ish total? And the countless trips to autopart stores and miscellaneous parts and peices would have to add up quick you could build the 383 yourself buying good used parts just shopping out the machine work and find a good used B&M or wieland SC for about 800 bucks easily done for less then 5k, LS is cool yes but seems like i would be a wiring and fitment nightmare over time
merritt McDowell most definitely not. If i has to guess, i have $4000 in my swap. $1000 in motor and trans, $1100 in complete fuel system and $700 in new computer and harness, and maybe another $1000 in hard parts etc. I’m not an LS kool aid drinker, but the reliability of an LS and ease to put in is well worth the money. And as with anything, you can spend as lunch as you want. I chose to spend my money on the fuel tank/system.
No chance you guys might have a diagram for where you wired the harness? I've been trying to find something on the bulkhead for my 87 R10 6.0 swap for a little while now.
Nope we haven't begun tackling the wiring yet, but we have an aftermarket PSI engine/trans harness so we our tuner is going to tie it into the truck harness.
Bad ass !!!! I’m thinking about this to my 82 c10 but I’m thinking about using the th400 , do I have to shorten the 2 pieces drive shaft I have or can I get a shorter slip yoke ?
Hey Square body ppl!! I could use some help/advice...I'm building my 1st LS!!!! It's for a 82 C10 I'm working on. I'm using a 6.0 lq4 paired with a 4L80 out of a 2005 Silverado. I plan on daily driving it but want to keep it "simple". I already have a SS truck intake manifold, just ordered some long tubes, probably going sloppy stage 2 cam 228/230 with springs, and a built torque converter. The converter is where I can use some knowledge. I was told to run a 3200 stall but just saw a turbo 99? 4.8 running a 2300 stall....
Hello I have looked in your description of the video about 5 times and maybe I’m going blind, I can’t find the part number of the muscle car oil pan :-(. Also Did it hang below the crossmember ?
I got a 79 short bed c10. What's my best bet. It has a 1987 305 with the turbo 400 in it now. I'm thinking 600hp ls with a 6 speed? Or should I keep the turbo 400 with turbo?
I have a 305/ th350 in my 81 and want to swap to a 700r4. Is that driveshaft custom or OEM? Buddies keep telling me I need a custom one. I figured theres gotta be a shortbed squarebody that came stock with a 305 and 700r4. Thanks!
Flawless removal and install! What are you going to do with the 305/700R ? Selling or new project? Im intrested if you are selling, of course if the price is right. Keep up the great work!!!

Do you have to use muscle car oil pan, or can u use the LS truck pan?
We like to use the GM ls swap pan or the Holley pan. Truck pan can be used on a squarebody with Tejas Steel Works motor mounts bc it pulls it up and forward so the pan doesn't hang low
Good info, thanks
So, 3000 RPM torque converter... Does that mean that you have to rev the engine to 3000 before it will go? That seems a bit high.
Were you able to use the stock clutch fan with the tejas mounts?
We were but had to cut the factory shroud a little. Tejas makes a killer cooling system for these trucks that I love. We used it on the blazer.
Thank you! I always go with casting number. Too may other variables are inconsistent in my opinion.
This is the cooling system we run on our LS swaps. All the links are in the description. Thanks! ua-cam.com/video/tTjQMOZsTzU/v-deo.html
If its a quest of power for the same cost as an LS swap cost of refreshing the LS and the cost of the new trans you could have built a supercharged 383 stroker up to about 6-700hp
This swap was about reliability and power, not just power. And a supercharged 383 would cost way more than this LS swap.
Great video!!!! I love both the sqrbdyX shirts in the video. Where can I get my hands on those ?
Thanks! Just head over to www.sqrbdy.com
Wish I could do that to mine!!!☹️
Great video!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
No chance you guys might have a diagram for where you wired the harness? I've been trying to find something on the bulkhead for my 87 R10 6.0 swap for a little while now.
Nope we haven't begun tackling the wiring yet, but we have an aftermarket PSI engine/trans harness so we our tuner is going to tie it into the truck harness.
@@UNITEDBYTRUCKS All good. I have a 2011 L96 and 6l90e and it's been a journey trying to get it all figured out.
Well done boys, hurry up with the next video please 😂👍
haha no pressure, huh, Allan?
Yes heaps, can’t wait to see how it all turns out😃👍
Bad ass !!!!
A 3200 stall will work very well with that set-up.
@@UNITEDBYTRUCKS thank you
" I don't want to get my hat dirty!"
( he says, while wearing a Mike Finnigan Blasphemi T-shirt)
Homeless Dave is laughing his a$$ off!
Are the part links for 5.3s and 6.0s or just for the 5.3. Love the vids by the way
Thanks much! It's for 4.8/5.3/6.0.
@@UNITEDBYTRUCKS thank you sir this will help me out a lot for my swap
Hello I have looked in your description of the video about 5 times and maybe I’m going blind, I can’t find the part number of the muscle car oil pan :-(. Also Did it hang below the crossmember ?
It does not hang below the crossmember. Here's the link to it and part number: amzn.to/2CBosBn (19212593)
I got a 79 short bed c10. What's my best bet. It has a 1987 305 with the turbo 400 in it now. I'm thinking 600hp ls with a 6 speed? Or should I keep the turbo 400 with turbo?
My man said, "We'd be doing a lot better, if you put that camera down". Almost spit my drink up.
Haha he’s doing a lot better bc of that camera 😂
Taking a 305 out of a 86 c10 long bed going back with a 454 from an 85 c30
I'm doing the same to my 87 long bed. I'm running a carb instead of FI. What are you doing?
Like that new intro!!!
What new intro?!?! I forgot to say 'where we're United By Trucks' ugh
What transmission did you mate with the LS engine? from where? I couldn't hear over the fan. Was the 700 R-4 standard in the Pecos?
Yes, factory 700r4 truck. Used the Tejas Steelworks crossmember with a factory 4l60-e trans mount bushing
The way it should be! Keep rockin
Fo sho!
Im looking to do an affordable upgrade on an engine for my 78 jimmy, what would you recommend.????
Affordable and upgrade are certainly in the eye of the beholder, but if you're looking to go LS, I don't think you'll be unhappy.
Some of my favorite memories are from doing this exact thing with my friends
Yes sir! About to be back at it soon.
Nice work!!! With friends, anything is possible!!!
What transmission did you use behind the 5.3 and what stall size on the convertor. Thanks
4L60e and Circle D 3000 stall billet converter.
What crossmember did you guys use it's not in the parts list?
Trans crossmember? Tejas Steelworks.
LS f-body owners look at all that room under the hood and say "Oh I can actually use the right tool for the right job, with unscathed knuckles."
haha for real
Dig it guys! My buddy has one and he might do something this video will be very helpful! Subbed!👍🏻
Sweet! More to come on the install in the next few days.

I have a 305/ th350 in my 81 and want to swap to a 700r4. Is that driveshaft custom or OEM? Buddies keep telling me I need a custom one. I figured theres gotta be a shortbed squarebody that came stock with a 305 and 700r4. Thanks!
This truck came with a factory 700r4 and a lot of squarebodies did. It's a factory driveshaft with a 27 spline yoke.
Flawless removal and install! What are you going to do with the 305/700R ? Selling or new project? Im intrested if you are selling, of course if the price is right. Keep up the great work!!!
Thanks much! And the 305/700r isn't for sale. It's going to be used in another project. Thanks for tuning in.
