Many years ago now my niece was getting christened, my sister was living in Buckfastleigh, in Devon, and being catholic, this was done at the Abby. My mother got talking to one of the monks, one of the senior monks, and was invited to partake of a glass of Buckfast wine, or two. I ended up with her feet, my dad had her arms, all was fine until she came round, talk about a grumpy head! My sister was not impressed.
Just so that my niece was aware what happened, she was only a very young baby at the time, at her eventual wedding, my mother did the same, again, got talking to the priest at the reception, this was in Claridges, and it was Champagne, not Buckfast wine, she has not touched it since that fateful day, also I don’t think Claridges would serve such a beverage, as my niece was making her grand entrance, my mother fell at her feet in a very drunken stupor.
It was all videoed by the wedding photographer I still have the video.
On odd occasions I mention to my niece that it would be a good video to put onto youtube.
As my niece is now fairly famous, had a TV series, and some other high profile ‘things’, she is really not impressed.
Catholics in general have no problem with alcohol as in drinking the stuff.

The notoriety of Buckfast Tonic Wine in Scotland is well deserved, and certainly well earned.
    1) Buckfast was mentioned in 5,638 crime reports in the Strathclyde area of Scotland between 2006 & 2009; (this equates to nearly four per day!)
    2) In 2017, Scottish Police reported there had been 6,500 crimes related to the drink in the previous two years. One in 10 of those offences had been violent and in that period, a Buckfast bottle was used as a weapon 114 times.
    3) A survey at a Scottish young offenders' institution showed of the 117 people who drank alcohol before committing their crimes, 43 per cent said they had drunk Buckfast.
    4) A study of litter around a typical council estate in Scotland, found that 35 per cent of the items identified as rubbish were Buckfast bottles.
And you liked the taste Alanna! It's a downward slope from here on. To quote Private Frazer, (a famous Scotsman from 'Dad's Army') "You're Doomed! Doooomed!"
Those monks at Buckfast Abbey have a lot to answer for! Perhaps Barrs in Scotland should start making a version of Irn Bru fortified with alcohol and export it to rural Devon!

This comes in brown bottles rather than green ones, has slightly less alcohol (14.8%ABV, rather than 15%ABV in the green bottle,) but where the 'Scottish' green bottle contains 30mg caffeine per 100ml, the 'Irish' brown bottle contains 60mg caffeine per 100ml.

My favourite Scottish drink is Red Kola! Dang. That stuff is GOOD. Very hard to find in England though.
Favourite food is anything you might order at the restaurant Opium in Glasgow. Such a great little place to eat, anyone in that neck of the woods should go! Bonus points for them using lockdown to feed the homeless around Glasgow. Lovely people.

I'm a Brit and I never heard of Scottish Tablet! Apparently it's meant to be brittle, unlike fudge. Like Kendal mint cake but with a caramel taste and lots of fat I guess. Good to have buried in the rucksack for energy reserves on long walks.

Tablet can be either Hard or Soft but more common to find as Hard (compared to Fudge) . Very similar ingredients to Fudge just the proportions and temperatures.
'Mrs Tillys' is sold in most Scottish Supermarkets (ADSA, Tesco, Sainsburys etc). Might have it south of the Border & they also do great range of Scottish Fudges.

For some reason the only part of Britain Buckfast is drunk is Scotland particularly around Glasgow....in Devon where it's made I've never seen it for sale in shops, I don't think I've seen it for sale anywhere in England.. actually in Buckland Abbey itself, it's for sale in the gift shop! But that's the only place in England I've seen it for sale
