    Above all with a climber.
    MAKE SURE YOU TIE THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM. Learned the hardway , when the bottom slid down 10ft.

    I am the buddy that banged the XOP through the woods and shot a buck out of it.
    After a decade plus of using climbers I have finally pieced together a hang on setup. Maybe after another decade I’ll add a saddle to the arsenal.

    Great video! Never tried a saddle but the more and more I see and hear about them, the more I want to try it out. I hunt mainly from a summit viper but we have a few ladder stands we use on our property.
    Safety is my main concern, then weight and then comfortability.

    Great video, I hunt alot of public land here in sc and my add keeps me on the move... bought a summit viper climber 10-12 years ago and have loved it for its light weight compared to others available at the time. Adding some athletic tape in key areas really helped quiet it down, but it is still bulky and can be a pain to carry when hiking a mile or more. When I go deep I usually dont bring it and just try to find a tree I can monkey up with a branch to sit on, a saddle would be great to eliminate needing that branch to sit on. Possibly more comfortable too

    I won’t say they are as great for compound bow hunting but crossbow and rifles, the millennium hang on stands with the full seat are great are great to me. My back also bothers me and I have problems being still as well.

    Great video! I ended up cutting down my lone wolf sticks and adding the webbing aider as well as the hammock straps after watching your video and 3 are just over 8lbs. The best part is the shorter length straps to my pack way better and the hammock strap eliminates the cam buckle that i almost always clanked against a stick! Would love to see how you pack your saddle setup in. I just got a mantis and built a platform out of an old deer stand seat like you did which works perfect. I cut it down to the climbing stick length tho.

    Excellent analytical comparison. I just sent back a brand new LW Assault 2 hand climber that I just paid $400 for. I wanted comfort and mobility. Watching vids like these convinced me saddle hunting was the way to go. For the amount I was refunded, got a nice Tethrd Mantis!! 😎Thanks for the video!

    I almost bought a saddle,but then the varying price and weight of the steps,I decided to go with a summit viper s.d..due to rusting I wouldn't buy anything steel.most people leave hang ons and ladder stands up year round stretching the straps to the breaking point.thin bark trees are touchy with a climber though.

    While this saddle tree hunting is all the rage now it's not too new. Thirty years ago I used lineman belts and pole climbing spike to ascend big pines in Arkansas. I would have two ropes hanging off the belt. One to a custom made aluminum platform. This stand had a fold up/down seat too. It weighed a little over 11 pounds. Slightly heavier than my rifle ( I was still killing deer with a gun back then). I even so far as to cut/sew holes in my heavy cold weather coat for rope to the linemans belt. Safety harnesses weren't even thought of then.

  • @masonangerett7632

    I'm thinking about getting a cheap hang on because I hunt "private land" that everyone and their friend has access to. Because I could take out the bottom stick or 2 so that know my stuff isn't gonna grow legs and walk away. Even with locks around the tree, ladder stands have been stolen off the property before.

  • @redsoxwinagain2007

    Saddle is the most flexible regarding trees. Even hang ons you sometimes have to be more selective than a saddle.

    So, I don’t do heights. I only do ground blind hunting. Do you have any thoughts on ground blinds? It’s dry. It’s comfortable. It’s safe. It’s less setup. Let’s hear some opposing opinions

    • @strikeforcek9149
      @strikeforcek9149 4 роки тому

      I hunt out if a blind, Big Cat 350 and have got 3 deer this year in just the past 45 days (I didn't start until halfway through the season).
      But, many people want tree stands because you don't get winded by deer as easy, you can set one up and hunt right away instead of having to spook skittish deer with a blind, and you don't get silhouette'd as easy in a tree vs in a blind, and you have A LOT better vantage point to see things coming, moving, and etc (all things you don't benefit from a ground blind).

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  4 роки тому

      No problems with ground blinds! But for my style of hunting and the type of topography I hunt, being a tree dweller just makes more sense for me.

    How does the back problem work out being helped in saddle? It looks to me like you have to use your back muscles to sit up the whole time you’re in the saddle? Occasionally I use the Ol man climber which is like your gorilla. But I’ve noticed the last two hunts it hurt my back the next day. And in a box stand the folding metal chairs do the same. Big patio chairs do good and the millennium m100 or m150 hang ons work well. But my options seem limited.

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  4 роки тому +1

      For me it's not an muscle issue it's a disc issues. So I don't have any back pain from sore muscles getting worked hard. On the contrary, it's when they're not working and over stretched that I get back pain. So I find my muscles being slightly active and slightly relaxed with a back band are the ticket for me.

    Another climbing system is steps. Cranford makes a well made step. Not that expensive. LAS sells them at 8.99 a step. I can fit 12 into a fanny pack, but it’s time consuming to climb up the tree due to strapping each step.

    I'm excited to see you posting more saddle content, it's a fun rabbit hole but MAN is it expensive! I just completed my second season in a saddle and it just gets better every hunt. Interested to see if you gravitate towards the one-sticking/rappeling techniques (spoiler alert: you'll feel like a tree ninja). Also, is that a phantom I spy?

  • @davidrussell631

    Great points, but your assessment of climbers would likely be different if you had ever used a Summit. Having had a treesuit and numerous hang-ons and climbers over the years, nothing beats a Summit in terms of comfort, even if you switch out the seat for a net seat as many of us do. That way I don’t fall to sleep on a slow morning. Lol. It’s just the perfect combination of low fiddle factor, comfort and quietness. Can’t use in any tree, but for hunting around oaks in the fall there’s usually a climbable tree at a ambush, at least where I hunt. Selling my Millenniums and will likely invest in a saddle for certain areas, though. I’ll never go back to a lone wolf style seat, though.

      @@takingchances5429 You'll actually find the one end of the straps has a big "tag end" that doesn't have any loops. The ones on mine were ~3ft long and are useless for the sticks. Once trimmed I was left with around 7ft and left them at that length, although I have considered shortening them as you'd be hard pressed to hunt out of a tree that is 6-7ft in circumference.
