I am impressed the new Bassett clarinets need to be redesigned. The tone of this clarinet especially the low notes is so impressive. Saving it to my playlist. Performance is also wonderful.
Classical music possesses an unparalleled ability to transport the listener to different realms, creating a sanctuary of refined beauty and emotional depth.
Looking through the comments, I was very touched to see that the clarinettist's parents had posted a loving message to their son. He is indeed a wonderful musician, and his parents must be so proud.
This is now my new favorite recording of this concerto; bravi tutti! I was blessed to be able to perform the third movement with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra back in 2007 (I really wish there were a recording, but alas, none exists); I thought I did a pretty damn good job of it (certainly as good as I was capable of at the time), but THIS is the interpretation and the sound I would have wanted - and I think what Mozart himself would have intended. Extraordinarily well done!
This sounds so much better than modern symphony orchestras arrogantly playing this music on their modern instruments! Everything works and is balanced!
Having watched the concert so many times we are always entertained, impressed and proud. We have just read all the comments and feel that we have been remiss in not adding ours. You are special. Love Mum and Dad Pickup
Odds are, probably only 3-5 times. The piece was completed and premiered in October 1791. There’d have been a rehearsal - perhaps just one - and then the public performances, which Mozart likely would have directed. We don’t know how many performances there were - maybe just one, perhaps two or three, but there weren’t many. When Mozart died in December 1791, the piece was not published, and the autograph score had been given to Anton Stadler, for whom the piece is thought to have been written.
Thank you for this marvelous performance, and with a very demanding instrument. Even with a modern A-clarinet it is a work to struggle to master, not to mention this basset clarinet with fewer clefs etc. And with that range, you get all the parts in right height, to contrast with the orchestra part. Also the orchestra without conductor - a real chamber music joy and conversation! Mozarts best concerto (not only by the clarinet players, but also others) gets a performance worth it, no doubt. Vielen Danke! Bravo! (at the end - what a beautiful and well earned gesture of the virtuoso clarinet player to thank the principal violin player and the orchestra first, before bowing to the audience - a gentleman indeed!)
It is not an epithet that one uses lightly but this was PERFECT as was dear Mozart who conceived it. One hopes that this recording will last for all time.
I heard it again and it was even more wonderful. The basset clarinet sound is so beautiful and even throughout the registers, the orchestral playing excellent with specially good finely phrasing in cellos and bass, and natural horns.
I'm not quite sure who made the statement about Mozart's last Concerto, but it is appropriate here: There are only very few things in life that are perfect. Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is one of them.
While the first and the final movements of this work can simply be called "great," the second movement is out of this world. It is perhaps among the most beautiful things ever created by a mere human being,
Mozart explores the highs and lows of the bassethorn's register particularly in the development section, starting 6:53. IMHO the true stroke of genius is the orchestral ritonello closing the development, with the sighing bassoon song.

Wirklich einzigartig!

A fantastic masterpiece, grandiose, operatically lively, dramatic and funny, profound, in a speaking dialogue with the orchestra - which also acts exzellent - infinitely fascinatingly played! Great, my heartfelt congratulations, I wish you many more concerts and a CD recording right away, Heini
Sublime and superb. As G.B. Shaw said about another musician "Such perfection angers the Gods, I recommend you play a few wrong notes every day to appease them!" And the same applies to your performance Robert... and I liked the way you kept dropping your left arm away whenever you did'nt need it - very wise. So expressive. Many thanks (this must be the 10th time I have played it).
The best performance of this concert I have ever heard. The very sweet sound of this clarinet, no hurries like some of the usual interpretations of this concert... Excellent!!!

Wow. This is just sublime. I'm curious about the variations on the written melody especially in the recapitulation in the second movement. Are they original variations added by Robert? I assume theres a great amount of research that goes into historical ornaments as well. They are stunning and really add so much personality and joy. As someone who has only played it the "normal" way (whatever that means) I was so surprised and overjoyed by every liberty taken. Love the use of the leg to cover the lowest hole too!

Yes, the clarinet has a very impressive sound. I am trying to define it like very sweet, and less gangly sound, than the ordinary modern clarinet.

And the horns too! No valves: so difficult to play.
