Vinnie had the best sound with his All custom Maple Slingerlands back in the early eighties. Listen to Holy Diver and Last in line with Ronnie James Dio. They sound Epic!
vinny's drumming rules! im a single kick drummer & he has been a huge influence! sabbath's dehumanizer has very tasty metal drumming & a wicked drum sound!
Gated reverb on that already super loud bass drum. His snare head looks like the falams K kevlar heads that were popular for a few years in the 80s. Vinny is such a beast.
4:45 - 4:55 had me baffled when I was ten years old. He did that in his Live Evil solo (Sabbath) and I couldn't grasp it until seeing this.. thanks UA-cam!
it was a november evening, 1984, in Phoenix, Az. I was ten years old. Dio was coming, and I had a ticket. The crowd at the Coloseum appeared as a sea of madness at twenty rows from the ceiling, and the drum solo blew my frigging fragile little mind. The crowd was loud, but the drums were louder. It still impresses me today.
I saw Vinny in LA back in the mid 80's in a small venue. I don't even know the name of the band he was playing with (not Dio), but it was so small, I was about 15 feet from him. I stood at the stage and my eyes never left him. The bass player kept trying to stand in front of me to get me to look at him, and I would look around him at Vinny. He got pissed and moved to the other side of the stage lol. Vinny had to of known I was a fellow drummer. He kept pointing his stick at me once he realized I wasn't there for anyone but him. right in the middle of a song and he'd point to me... I never forgot that!
I like Vinny more than Carmine. Don't get me wrong, Carmine is still awesome, it's just Vinny seems so chill and he always makes you wanna groove along with him, even if he's just blasting away at the kit, the music always just makes sense and goes together.
This is the video that inspired me to pick up a pair of sticks when i was just a kid i remember seeing this and thinking wow i want to play like this dude hes a legend in my eyes
Anastasios Alexopoulos ☆ Hey, bro! It was too awesome, best experience I've ever lived... Got a lot of pics w/ them ^^ One of them is in my profile pic! ^^ Loved the gig, they were too lovely w everyone!!
Awesome drummer, to me, he is the John Bonham of Metal drumming. I had the honour to open for his band Dio Desciple's in New York. Awesome guys, Mark Boals was singing for them that show and he sounded amazing, nice person. Craig Goldy and Vinnie Appice were super nice. His drumming is power house level. Not super technical but has extremely fast SINGLE bass peddle work (very similar to Ian Paice and Nicko McBrain) and has awesome, powerful drum fills and is perfect for what the song calls for. He stays in the pocket when needed and then lets it loose during chorus sections. He gave me signed drum sticks and a signed poster, I will never forget that
He's the reason I prefer Mob Rules to Heaven and Hell, Bill was great in Sabbath's heyday but the guy was struggling with a lot of personal issues by the time Ronnie joined, Vinny was their second wind when he stepped in
This guy is such a beast, his combo of power and precision is hard to match. There's a UA-cam video of him playing "Holy Diver" with his own band, check it out. I never really thought that there was a lot to that song, but he just crushes the damn thing. He has some of the most powerful, quickest fills that you will ever hear.
Vinny is my number one drummer hands down, just keeps a fucking solid beat and is just a heavy solid drummer, i've been playing for a few years now and all my technique is based around his style because that is what suites me the best
This is cool, but my favourite Vinnie solo is the one on youtube in which he has 2 kicks, a snare a hihat and a couple of cymbals and that is it. It really highlights his precision. Oh, and Vinnie can sink an ultra heavy ride/snare groove like no other. Awesome metal drummer!
That last hit... I remember him playing that drum at the end of the show in 1987 and the sonic wave kicked everyone back 3 metres. At that time nobody cared about the decibels delivered in a gig. Actually, the policy was the loudest the better... good ol'times!
I used to have a Kevlar snare head like Vinnie has there. They were beautiful and tough. Of course, Vin plays and tunes it HIS way which is just too great, must be heard. I think it was Equarian? Does anyone remember the name of that Kevlar head?
I used to play drums for Biohazard in the 80s I used that snare head, super tight tuning, great bounce, excellent for hardcore drumming in my opinion.its hard to get these anymore, I think it was called dura=pro.they were yellow, odd looking, lasted for months, never tore.I remember they were about 15 bucks back then.
Wow ! I totally remember that drum head on the snare drum that he's using..It was a Remo fiberglass head, and i had one as kid when i got my first drum kit..My brother was the one who put the heads on it..It was a 60's Westbury with a sort of Ludwig "Black Panther" wrap on it.. The whole kit had that drum head..Awesome head and virtually indestructible !
I live in central California and have a friend that could sit in for practically any band in the world tonight. But no one will ever hear of him because he's a reclusive person.Point is,There are AMAZING drummers in bedrooms throughout the world right now as we speak.Just because they are not on world tours or on television means nothing. This friend of mine I mentioned was playing like Dave Weckyl when he was 17! I play at clubs on the weekends but have never put much time into strict practice.
@abe1sapien let me tell ya bro, I saw Dio in '84, and his solo was like a violent explosive thunderstorm (without double bass drum). He was playing this same stuff heard here (and like the 84 solo from the Spectrum) and you could feel the pulse of every drum shaking your body's cartilage loose. Let me restate this: you could've felt it if you were dead and burried in a nearby graveyard.
Never understood micing the concert toms from the tom. They sound thin because you are hearing the head. You get less than 15% of the actually drum sound. You then have to get it electronically from the board, EQs, and effects. But I will say that Vinny is a monster. I first heard and saw him with Rick Derringer in the early 1970's.
Wow, all that gate on the kick. I think drum recording has come a very long way. At some point, AI will be able to take these old drum tracks and allow us to see how it would sound with the benefit of our latest tech.
yeah.. top comments here are legit. Any punk who posts anything negative here obviously wasn't around (although thier moms were) back when stadiums would fill and the decible levels were dangerous - I'm pretty sure that volume level is illegal these days. I saw Dio in 83, and heard this guy at that volume, and I come back here to remind me of what I saw and heard.
most concerts these days are like... a fishtank! I saw Vinnie with Dio in 1983, which was like... a hurricane and an erupting volcano, in the ocean!! Fans of Joey and Travis don't realize how much crazier shit was before their time.
Just gave this awesome video its 600 like... 😍👍 Love it, Vinny is too awesome! 🤘🏻 You're the king of Rock and Roll ! The Rockin' Machine !! 🥁🥁🖤 C'mon let's get 666 !! 😉🥁👑🌠🔥🥁
Vinny is unbelievable. He plays with both power and finesse, and doing it with a single kick. Brings back memories of seeing him live with Dio.
Vinny posseses a very important trait that most drummers lack...it's called STYLE!
Meter as well.
Vinny Appice is simply amazing.
2:18 A LIFE CHANGING EVENT IN MY LIFE!!!
Always like his single kick style. Vinnie, Nicko McBrain, Clive Burr(RIP), metal drummers that stayed true to one kick drum.
Like Bonzo and Sean Kinney.
I never understand the hatred of double bass
@@jorgepaul5049 maybe on other stuff but Clive had one bass drum
@@kennyhamilton
No im not..since 1985.He put double bass to decorate the stage presence..idiot.
@@thenecropolis_ov_former_lo3396 same...why is it so voodoo to have a double kick?

BOGATA9 one of my favorite drummers of all time.
@@ARod-br2ui Agreed!
Didn't he do a thing where his drum set caught on fire live and floated in the air or something?
Vinnie is awesome, one of my top 5 fav drummers. His style and sound is so unique and tasty, first class drummer.
My favorite drum track of his with Dio is speed at night. Epic and amazing.
vinny's drumming rules! im a single kick drummer & he has been a huge influence! sabbath's dehumanizer has very tasty metal drumming & a wicked drum sound!
Check out ww3 early 90s.
Vinie is in that group.
The video clip time for terror.

*Cheers!* That's playing a set of drums. My (personal) influence of 27 years of playing... Vinny Appice. The Heaviest Drummer in the World.
Sweet 80's... It was a great time! Really live Rock and huge drumsets!!!

Vinnie is an absolute legend and has such a cool groove

One of , if not , the best rock drummers ever!🥁🔥👍

The behind the beat feel, groove, dynamic and the POWER.🤘
Love Vinny. I got his lesson book back in '84 and learned a lot of great exercises.

Not really, missing one last part.
But yes it is really an amazing intro
Best drum solo I have ever seen!

Phenomenal double kick work! Vinny freakin' rules!
what Double kick work? I see only one kick. unless you are referring to the single footed doubles?
yes i think he means the single footed doubles...
Yeah that's what I meant. He also does a great job of doing the kick and hi-hat at the same time. Sorry, should have specified.
@@haydendraycott7897 The kick and Hi-ht are not at the same time.

@Audioslave3 Holy Diver, Last in Line and Sacred Heart!Vinny Appice and VIvian Campbell did an awesome job in these albums
I'm very grateful I still have ludwig rockers drumheads this is a prime example
Those are Ludwig heads? I thought those were Remo cs black dots.
I think your right....I don't think Ludwig makes heads anymore
Dwayne Merson Ludwig makes heads. Their dots are silver.
Cool. Brothers Appice are very cool.
its very identifiable.. and it sounds soo bad ass!! :)
Vinnie taught me how to hold down a beat heavy
Great drummer and that kit set up is mad!🖐😅👋
this is AMAZING!! I've been looking for clips of this vid. I'm off to by the DVD now.
Thanks for posting!!
I love that Dream Evil kit
Frickin sick solo 😎🤟🤘

Super stiff, super great. Love it!
Too stiff, I’d argue. His playing needs a muscle relaxer.

@Audioslave3 ..and of caurse he joined Hear'n'Aid project!

4:33 This part is awesome almost the same as Live Evil solo. V Appicce is awesome
That beat from 2:20 - 2:40 is fucking heavy man !!!
Strong mullet and bandana technique. Rambo era.
