as a russian speaker i admire the way she made her russian distinctive but not over the top, as so many others do. it doesn’t make the language sound ridiculous which i really appreciate
I heard she worked very hard to find the right balance, one that a Russian who's *so* fluent in English might have
She said in an interview that they didn’t want to make the Russian accent really strong and almost wanted a bit of a mix so you couldn’t exactly pin point where she’s from because she has gone to so many different countries and hasn’t been in russia for years she felt like the character wouldn’t have a thick Russian accent. She also said that she made it a little stronger for the episodes when she was back in Russia because she said that her scouse accent is always strongest when she is back in Liverpool and she felt it would be the same for other people and their accents. I really love what she did with it and how she thought so much about how someone would actually sound if they had lived that life rather than just doing loads of strong accents

Yh Jodie is hilarious with her impressive accents in Killing Eve. When I heard her talk in her natural scouse accent I was gobsmaked.😮 I don't know much about McAvoy so I ll have to check him out
jodie’s acceptance speech for her emmy win had a very good example of the scouse intonations you were talking about. she was emotional in it but the way her voice cracks and goes up when she says “tIIIiime” at the end is easily one of the most adorable things ever.

When I arrived to The UK one of the first accents I came across with was Scouse. You can imagine how shocked I felt after I had studied English with the RP accent as reference. I love this accent and ppl from Liverpool are the friendliest in the Uk .

there's a video of Jodie reacting a particular scene of Killing Eve, in there her scouse is pretty strong with a similar intonation and pitch to scandinavians. would be great a second part analysing it.

The word scouse is derived from a Nordic or Scandinavian origin. It refers to a type of stew that was introduced into Liverpool by Norwegian sailors called lobscouse. In reality the accent has strong influences from many countries because of the port status of Liverpool.
hey another great video. Finding a true 'scouse' accent, that people could associate with (for vid purposes) is difficult within the acting community but Jodie sounds like the industry hasn't changed much of her accent yet making a good example. A lot of letters are not pronounced on Merseyside and when becoming an 'actor' those letters are generally added back into speech allowing more understanding but completely changing the way they speak. The inclination at the end of the sentence, within this video, is both emphasising the severity of the statement and seeks the listeners understanding.
I am not an English speaker and I can't really tell the difference between different accents, but thank you for your video! It did help me understand more about Jodie's natural accent! She is amazing! I don't understand how could she master so many different accents

That’s so interesting about the intonation, I had always picked up on that in the scouse accent but I didn’t know how to articulate it. From an American perspective, it kind of makes everything they say kinda sound like you’ve just mildly offended them.

I never noticed how similar Southern American accents are to Scouse before this video, they both have heavy Irish influences, cool!
Thanks as always, Teacher Tom! I admired Ms. Comer's Russian accent but now even more so. Here in Mexico, both when we are learning English and in teacher training courses, they emphasize sooo much that we shouldn't pronounce the final g in an -ng ending, like in the word "song", so it was so nice to hear you say that some English dialect variations do use it!! Thank you so much!!
Who told you not to pronounce the G in song? Please do, or people will assume you are talking about your or their son.
On the other hand, Native Americans who tend to also keep their own language often use the hard “ g”. Especially re: the word “ sinGing”. Often they drop the final hard “ g” at the end and it’s “ sinGin”..

This was very informative-and the part where you talk about how she pronounces "cooking" with the "huhh" sound instead of "k"? That reminded me of an episode of Red Dwarf when Lister says "I want my body back with the "huhh" sound at the end of "back". Now I understand! Did I explain that well enough?
I honestly didn’t know her until I recently saw her in The Last Duel. I was quite confused though, she reminds me a lot of Annabelle Wallis, especially in that movie.

Another terrific lesson - thank you teacher Tom. Apparently the scouse accent is a product of Welsh and Irish immigration. My favourite features are the 'Arabic' "kha' for the 'ck' sound and the you plural solution: 'youz'.
Youz was never acceptable here in Edinburgh and is still considered only for use by the uneducated! And, people over the age of 3 shouldn't get away with saying birfday. That would have had you taken out of class and sent for speech therapy. 3-free baf-bath. So childish.😏
A Welsh person moving to Liverpool isn’t immigration
It’s the Scandinavian/ other parts of Europe “kk” I think it’s from German and Scandinavian. The accent is influenced by alot because of people who came in on the ports. The thing about Scouse is that it changes depending on what part of Liverpool you’re from, Jodie is probably from the city centre of Liverpool because she has the very high to low to high sort of accent, on the more urban parts of Liverpool it is a deep and slow accent but they both have the growl of k the part of Liverpool I was born has the slower and deeper one but I know plenty of people when I was in school had the city centre one.

Scouse also has bits of Scandinavian influence, as well.

Good video. I live in Liverpool (though I was born in Cornwall - with a Glasgow accent, (work that one out!)). The ‘shibboleth’ (‘test’ word or phrase) for testing the authenticity of a Liverpool accent is how you pronounce the phrase ‘Greek Street’. - a real street in Liverpool, as in ‘We all live on Greek Street’. Try it!
For anyone else, Scouse is one of the hardest accents to master.
Many try to be a "Scouser", but exaggerate it too much that then end up sounding like "The Scousers" from Harry Enfield & Chums!
I personally was born in Birmingham I find the scouse acsent not to hard to imatate. Maybe having a brummie acsent helps. I find the Geordie acsent tricky
I think you'll find that the k sound in cookin ' is exactly how the ch in loch sounds.

The influence of "Gog" (North Welsh) in Scouse is obvious to those of use from South / Mid Wales.

The Scouse accent has a lot unique features that you cannot find anywhere else in England but to me the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of this accent is the *intonation*
Of course they have a lot of slang words etc but the intonation is so distinct! You cannot confuse it with any other accent!

I completely agree. I think people often focus too much on certain sounds in the scouse accent when in fact it is the intonation and the melody of the scouse accent that is distinct.
Don’t forget in recent years the Liverpool accent has been voted the friendliest of British accents as well as the people from the Liverpool, I was born in Liverpool but was brought up on the Wirral however I’ve travelled and worked all over the country and the world in my career. Mark

Yes and I don’t know why he didn’t mention that and instead talked about some subtle consonant sound. Those long drawn out melodic vowels are what makes the scouse accent so interesting. I wasn’t very impressed by this video to be honest.

Mate you missed the way we say something. We say "sun'in'". That's the best I can write that. It sounds nothing like something, but that's the way we say it. I've talked with people from different countries even english speaking countries & no-one has understood a word I've said. I've had tto talk slowly & clearly for them to understand me & that include people in the south of England. Great vid. Nice one.

I loved the video and all the examples. I wish there were more examples and stronger ones as well.
I'm not an expert on English language but since I moved to Liverpool, I usually hear some heavy Scouse accent which is almost impossible for me to understand. After some time here, I guess It started to sound nice and melodic. But still, most of the time, I have to make people repeat what they say, though.

Don’t worry, matey. We all understand that our accents can be hard to understand. If you live here (and maybe outside of the city centre) you’ll be experiencing the very raw, quick and nasal scouse accent. We’re used to talking to our families and friends, who understand us. So, we may be like that with you too…😂

Is the accent of Blackpool close to Scouse because I have Irish relatives that moved there after the war and my cousins sound sorta like this , I understand English accents with maybe having to look up slang , my mother was from Ulster and if I can understand my cousins the rest aren’t hard
No, the Blackpool accent is completely different. The Blackpool accent is a form of the Lancashire accent. It doesn't sound anything like Scouse. Liverpool used to have a form of the Lancashire accent prior to the massive immigration from Ireland in the mid-1800s onwards which led to Liverpool developing its own completely different and unique Scouse accent.

It’s influenced by a lot of different accents, even Scandinavian and more from around the world. Mainly because of how many sailors from different places come in on the ports.

So, how does Scouse differ from Cockney? I've heard of people being referred to as "Bri'ish" as opposed to British because of the supposedly "low-class" Cockney accent. Or am I confused about something?

Most accents in the UK have changed dramatically since the 60s. Not only in Liverpool but everywhere. If you analyse the London accent, you will find it is now heavily Influenced by a more diverse population. The same thing can be said of Liverpool and any other multicultural city. Also, I think that TV has played a major part in the constant development of regional dialects.
